    Book Description

    INTRODUCTION

A vibrant and compact city, Dublin has a pace and energy quite at odds with the relaxed image of Ireland as a whole. Prosperity generated by the Republic's economic boom has brought fundamental changes to the life of its capital, reversing the tide of emigration and creating a dynamic cultural centre. The ongoing rapidity of transformation is constantly apparent; new exhibitions, chic bars and restaurants and fashionable shops all signify a major shift in Dublin's identity, no longer dominated by the insularity of the past, but increasingly adopting a more global outlook.

The city's emergence from provincialism is, however, only part of the picture. Increases in population have left Dublin bulging at the seams which, of course, brings its problems, not least in terms of the high cost of housing and rents: spend just a couple of days here and you'll come upon inner-city deprivation as bad as any in Europe. Furthermore, the arrival of numbers of refugees and asylum-seekers has challenged perceived notions about Ireland's homogeneity - and not all Dubliners have embraced the concept of multiculturalism.

Dublin's collective spirit has its contradictions, too, with youthful enterprise set against a deeply embedded traditionalism. However, the collision of the old order and the forward-looking younger generations is an essential part of the appeal of this extrovert capital, and, despite their differences, its inhabitants' famous wit and garrulous sociability are a constant feature of Dublin life. In the legendary - and plentiful - bars, the buskers of Grafton Street and the patter of the tour guides who ply the streets with visitors in tow, there's an unmistakable love of banter. The city's considerable literary heritage owes much to this trait, and on either side of the Liffey you'll find reminders of literary personalities who are as intrinsic to Dublin's character as the river itself - from the bronze pavement plaques following the route of Leopold Bloom, hero of James Joyce's Ulysses, to the Oscar Wilde statue striking an insouciant pose in Merrion Square.

Ireland's economic growth during the 1990s has lent new impetus to just about every facet of the capital's cultural life. Historic treasures are being innovatively promoted and displayed, from the new Millennium Wing of the National Gallery to the wealth of decorative arts on show at the Collins Barracks, while the city's social and political history is evoked with flair, both in the abundance of theme-based tours and in the fabric of the city itself. Everywhere in Dublin you'll find evidence of a rich past well worth exploring: exceptional Viking finds excavated at Wood Quay (and now on show in the National Museum); impressive reminders of Anglo-Norman and British imperial power; elegant Georgian streets and squares; and monuments to Ireland's violent struggle for independence from the British. The visual arts are enjoying a higher public profile too, with mouthwatering exhibitions in the city's numerous galleries supplemented by the development of a unique design scene that's characterized by subtlety, experimentation and exploration of Ireland's Celtic past. Throughout the city there's a palpable sense that Dublin's cultural heritage is coming into its own - with striking confidence.

Dublin is, of course, known for its pubs, and for many, sampling the myriad bars and buzzing nightlife is an integral part of visiting the city. There's also plenty of music on offer and, while the capital has nothing to match rural Ireland, there are plenty of traditional music bars as well as an abundance of rock and jazz venues, and a vital and ever-changing club scene. Theatre, too, has long played a part in the city's cultural life - you can catch plays by O'Casey, Synge and Shaw all year round at venues such as the Abbey Theatre, as well as experiencing the vitality of Dublin's continuing dramatic tradition during the annual theatre and fringe festivals.

5 out of 5 stars Best Dublin Guide Yet.......2000-09-26

I have read several guides to Dublin and the Rough Guide is the best by far. It is packed full of information in, and unlike many of the other guides, it includes information on off-the-beaten path destinations and day trips outside of Dublin.

It has lots of practical information that the first-time traveler to Dublin should know, like what buses you can take from the airport, the (new) location of the Dublin Tourist Office, and the costs of public transport.

The style of the Rough Guide is very enjoyable as well. Instead of just a few recommendations for rooms and restaurants, the guide includes many suiting virtually all tastes and budgets.

    Highly recommended.

    Book Description

George Washington: Ordinary Man, Extraordinary Leader is a revised edition of the author's George Washington, published in 1979. Totally updated to include the author's extensive research conducted in the intervening two decades, the book is a concise but complete biography of Washington as gentleman planter, colonial rebel, American general, and U.S. president. The book provides a full and even-handed portrait of the first president, with special emphasis on how he took his rather commonplace talents and transformed them with self-discipline into extraordinary leadership in a time of turmoil. The book pays special attention to Washington's struggles during the Revolution and his tenure as president and deals with his gradual conversion from advocate of nonpartisan politics to a strict Federalist. This book synthesizes the current research in a readable style that affords the general reader an understanding of Washington's special character and his vital role in the making of the United States.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing bio of America's first great leader.......2003-08-09

I found this bio to be quite disappointing. It is relatively brief, and many important events in Washington's life and career are only given a few sentences or paragraphs. Most of the author's observations regarding Washington's character are not presented until the end, and then they are disjointed and seem to be mere afterthoughts. The author also tends to group many subjects into a single paragraph, perhaps to hide the lack of detail. Compared to other historical bios (like McCullough's John Adams or Blumenson's Patton) this book is poorly written, difficult to read, and lacking in detail and information. I do not recommend this book at all.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling look at both the legend and the man.......2002-08-08

Fleshed out with an additional twenty years of meticulous, exhaustive research and newly revised by Robert E. Jones (Professor of History, Fordham University), George Washington: Ordinary Man, Extraordinary Leader is an informative biography of America's first President. Focusing especially on Washington's trials during the Revolution and his service as President, George Washington: Ordinary Man, Extraordinary Leader is a compelling look at both the legend and the man, his foibles as well as his virtues, and his legacy and contribution to both American and world history. George Washington: Ordinary Man, Extraordinary Leader is very highly recommended for academic and community library American History and Biographical Studies collections.

5 out of 5 stars Living With John and Alzheimer's Disease.......2001-04-18

This book is a day by day process from symptoms thru diagnosis to solving problem as they arise. An excellant self-help book by a spouse that has lived with the problem for 14 years. It is a story of loving one's mate to the bitter end by keeping the "sickness" part of the marriage vows. I highly recommend this book to any caregiver that needs comfort, support and suggestions to make their lives and their loved ones more comfortable.

      5 out of 5 stars It deserves 10 Stars.......2007-09-09

This is a fabulous book and worth buying. I've had several of Sherri Haab's books and by far this is one that covers so many different mediums while making it all seem doable for the crafter/artist. I liked everyone of her selections here. You will be inspired. Glad I made the purchase.

      3 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointed.......2007-01-19

It has a great synopsis and made it very desirable, but very disappointing when received.

5 out of 5 stars Sherri Haab rocks!.......2006-11-07

I adore Sherri Haab. She explains things very clearly, so even if it's a technique you've never tried before. There are tons of pictures to go with the project, which really helps as well. And I just love her style of jewelry making. I've been making jewelry for a couple of years now, and got a lot out of the projects. Plus the list of supplies and suppliers was handy so you know where everything came from. I recommend this book

4 out of 5 stars Designer Style Jewelry: Techniques and Projections for Elegant Designs from Classic to Retro.......2006-07-25

This book is of a great help to me in jewelry making. It is easy to read and instructions are clear. Thank you for such a fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Jewelry to Make for Mixed-Media Crafters.......2006-04-30

I'm an avid crafter and have recently started beading and making jewelry. After checking out every jewelry making book in our local library and browsing through many others at a couple of craft stores I decided I wanted to purchase this great book. All of the projects are for jewelry I would love to wear myself or make for others. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions are very clear. There is a project for everyone in this wonderful book.

          Book Description

Harris’s List of Covent Garden Ladies was a bestseller of the 18th century, selling 250,000 copies in an age before mass consumerism. An annual "guide book," it detailed the names and "specialities" of the capital’s prostitutes. During its heyday, 1757–1795, Harris’s List was the essential accessory for any serious gentleman of pleasure. Yet beyond its titillating passages lay a glimpse into the lives of those who lived and died by the List’s profits during the Georgian era. Hallie Rubenhold has collected the funniest, ruddiest, and most surreal entries penned by Jack Harris, "Pimp-General-of-All-England" into this book.

5 out of 5 stars Assertive Discipline for Parents.......2003-09-09

I'm a single mother of three boys ages 10, 8 and 6. I've been told I was a softy and I had great children who needed more guidance and discipline. This book is great. The price too.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Direct and Easy to Read.......2003-05-28

I have read several "discipline" books with many more on my nightstand. This is by far one of the best books for all ages, from toddlers to teens. The book is easy to read (1-2 hours at the most), gives great examples and has already inspired me to take charge of my parenting with my almost 4 yr old twin boys. I can certainly see it's effectiveness into the teen years.

The Canter's give you an overview of "being assertive" and ineffective communication. Then they keep it simple by giving you in one short chapter the tools most parents will need to get results - speak assertively, use nonverbal cues, utilize the broken record technique for arguers, and praise when behavior is appropriate. The next couple chapters suggest how to back up your words with actions and lay down the law, including some examples of "extreme" measures people have taken. Each chapter supplies examples and a one page summary at the end.

The rest of the book gives great ideas for enforcing positive behavior, working with 2 or more children, changing behavior at school, and working with spouses and ex-spouses. There are examples situations for working parents, babysitters, and single parents. There is a question and answer section of the most "what if?" and "but.." questions, a long problem/consequence example chapter and worksheets for disciplinary plans in various situations.

I highly recommend this book as one of the first to read. I really like the way they give suggestions, but don't treat them as the only way to do things. The authors acknowledge the fact that some children definitely need professional help and that the professional advice comes first. And the fact that positive reinforcement is highly emphasized makes it a well rounded, easy to implement discipline strategy.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!.......2003-05-25

Assertive Discipline For Parents is an excellent book. It's not a very long book that will take you weeks, or even months to read, and it gets right to "the point". No long, drawn out stories. There's also worksheets that can be used for home and at school. Assertive Discipline is a 3-step program...You try it one step at a time. If the first step doesn't work, continue on to the next step. (Just be sure to read the entire book first.) It offers suggestions as: use "I WANT you to..." instead of "You NEED to..." The "broken record" technique is also fabulous! When your child argues with you or comes up with excuses, just use the "broken record" technique...keep repeating your request. I recommend this book to anyone who needs something quick, and easy to understand and read. It's working for us!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for parents.......2002-04-19

I think the book offered lots of great advice for parents who have no ideas of where to begin. I also think it did alot to dispel notions of the effects of harsh discipline and verbal abuse.

We are the parents of an only child. He had a lot of bad learned behavior. This book was recommended to us by a child psychologist and it really has helped us in the discipline area. My son is a different child and gets along better with his peers. This is an excellent book. I'm even buying copies for my friends who are struggling with discipline in their homes.

Second only to that of the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., Colby College Museum of Art's John Marin Collection contains paintings, watercolors, drawings, etchings and photographs by one of the most important modern American artists. The works span the years 1888 to 1953 and, at a time when interest in Alfred Stieglitz and his colleagues is growing, prove extremely timely and academically valuable.
