    Book Description

The fifth edition of this sailing standard includes updated charts and text reflecting changes in regulations and facilities for most countries and specific ports of entry. New appendices include procedures for entry to Australia, which are more exacting than most Pacific landfalls, and an extensive list of information sources: cruising guidebooks, important general tourist guides, chart suppliers, and key web sites for the countries covered by Landfalls of Paradise.

    5 out of 5 stars A Useful Resource.......2006-11-06

I am planning to sail to the South Pacific next year, and this seems like a very valuable planning tool. It has some information about the history of European exploration, weather patterns, general geography, route planning, etc., but the bulk of the volume is devoted to specific info about the individual island groups, and individual islands in them.
I predict this will be open often during my trip, along with Charlies Charts and a few others.

4 out of 5 stars the only one of its kind.......2000-11-13

Considing the relatively small market for a book like this, it's not surprising there's virtually nothing comparable in print. And Earl's territory is vast - all of the Pacific islands from Hawaii to New Zealand and north into Micronesia. The numerous maps should prove useful for orientation and could save you a bundle on official charts (although the author and publisher disclaim any responsibility for errors). There's lots of useful 'passage planning', yacht entry, weather, and public holiday information here, but the country intros could be shortened and the yacht facility sections beefed up. The oversized B&W photos throughout the book occupy space that could be better utilized. An appendix provides four pages outlining the use of amateur mobil radios, but no mention of communicating over the internet is to be found herein. At times, the coverage is skeletal and uneven. For example, on Tahiti only Papeete is visited. Moorea isn't included (!) and the popular Leeward Islands merit only a few lines. In contrast the seldom-visited Austral and Gambier islands receive four pages of maps and texts. In Fiji, Earl only descibes facilities in the main ports of entry: Suva, Lautoka, Levuka, and Savusavu. Really out of the way anchorages are seldom discussed. All that said, these criticisms are mute as there simply isn't another South Pacific cruising guide to choose from. It's a credit to Earl Hinz that he has kept this book going through four editions, and hopefully the electronic revolution will allow him to rejuvenate his book. Meanwhile Landfalls of Paradise is a basic reference work every Pacific sailor will want to carry aboard.

Lots of people have put forth theories on what makes Bill Clinton tick, but the most trustworthy source may be David Maraniss of the Washington Post. Maraniss won a Pulitzer covering Clinton's campaign, and his book on the man is nonpareil; you simply can't understand Clinton without reading Maraniss's anaylsis of his past. When Bill Clinton is good, he is very, very good, and when he's bad, he's exactly like he has been all his life. Fair-minded but no apologist, Maraniss is essentially an inspiring reporter who, virtually alone among Americans, has troubled to interview Clinton's Oxford classmates and therefore knows that Clinton was, according to them, not lying when he said he "never inhaled"; his classmates devoted hours to teaching Bill to inhale, but he just couldn't do it. Maraniss also casts light on what Clinton did imbibe intellectually at Oxford; precisely what he did to elude the draft, and its moral significance; how Arkansas politics shaped his political style; and what his character and marriage might actually be like. Yes, Maraniss gives us a comic scene in which fiancée Hillary comes through the front door of the campaign headquarters while a young female staffer is hustled out the back--but more importantly, Maraniss puts such events in perspective. As he once observed in the Post, "The question of whether a president who cannot control his sexual appetite should not be president is a tough one. It might mean that most of our presidents should not have been presidents."

      Book Description

Who exactly is Bill Clinton, and why was he, of all the brilliant and ambitious men in his generation, the first in his class to reach the White House? Drawing on hundreds of letters, documents, and interviews, David Maraniss explores the evolution of the personality of our forty-second president from his youth in Arkansas to his 1991 announcement that he would run for the nation's highest office. In this richly textured and balanced biography, Maraniss reveals a complex man full of great flaws and great talents. First in His Class is the definitive book on Bill Clinton.

he nails a lot of truth about clinton's early years and presidency...

      and/but

david maraniss is also fair... approaching it all as a Fellow Human just trying to get along in the world...

this book was fascinating to read and, like all good biography, taught life lessons ~

it was so interesting because ~ say what you will about bill clinton ~ he's the most interesting capable man of a generation...

anne coulter, christopher hitchens and ALL the folks of that Ilk who are not nearly as impressive as the people they love to skewer... lack everything someone like david maraniss demonstrates: for starters, insights that MATTER...

      5 out of 5 stars Spot On.......2003-12-29

I decided I hated Clinton a few days after 18 of my brother soldiers were slaughtered in Mogadishu. It was the day the first load of wounded Rangers came back to the states. I dont expect Presidents to be standing tall every moment wounded troops come back. But I do expect they would have enough decency not to tout their health care initiatives by visiting wounded gang bangers on such a day (as Clinton did). I read this book a few years after that incident. Still hate Clinton and her husband......just not as much!

Mr. Maraniss paints an interesting picture of Bill Clinton. Here is a truly brilliant man who learned the ins and outs of the American political system. A man who can spend a law school semester on the campaing trail yet manage to pass with some intense studying at the least moment (Im a law school grad an freely admit I couldnt do this!). But he also shows us the spoiled child side too. A person who was doted an indulged in his early years and who essentially got everything he wanted. Its no wonder he thought he was too good to serve in the military! Speaking of that Mr. Maraniss puts to bed for all eternity the draft issue. He makes it quite clear Clinton received an induction notice and then did everthing in his power to avoid service. Why should he serve his nation or follow his marriage vows? He was the best of the best and should be above the law!

So there you go. The good and the bad of a very polarizing character in a very intriguing format. Clinton lovers, nows the time to hit the not helpful button and get the hate email flowing!

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait till the autobiography, but this will do for now!.......2003-02-11

If you are a right wing nut, stay away from this book, you might actually appreciate and respect Bill Clinton. Maraniss really sheds light on the former President's childhood, initial interest in politics, Arkansas' governorship and his announcement for the presidency. Unbiased and definitely a page-turner. I have read a bunch of Bill Clinton books and this is definitely one of my favorites. You do not need to be a policy wonk or even a political hack to enjoy learning about our 42nd president. Even some of my Republican friends find his ascent interesting and even revealing as to some of his decision making during his time in the White House. A great book, a greater president, two thumbs up!!

4 out of 5 stars A great reflection of a truly great president.......2002-10-20

First, the title of this story can be misleading. In highschool, college, at Oxford and Yale, Clinton was never "first in class," based solely on grades. But, who cares? Clinton is one of the best presidents in United States history and Maraniss gives an inside look into the life of this great man despite not interviewing anyone in the Clinton family. He uses research based solely on interviews from those people closest to the man himself. When you reach for this book don't think it will give you an inside look at the presidency. It rolls along in chronological order from birth to announcement of candidacy for the 1992 presidential election so never gets to the presidency. It does however provide some interesting insights into the Clinton marriage, and the Clinton psyche. His temper, although rare is described well in this biography. Overall, it is a great read for anyone who wants to know more about a former president. Everything from his Oxford years and apparent affairs with other women not named Monica Lewinsky or Paula Jones. Perhaps the greatest thing about this book is how Maraniss remains neutral. Regardless of his like or dislike of Clinton, he never shows it.

5 out of 5 stars An Eminently Readably Biography of a Fascinating Man.......2002-10-18

I'll just start this by saying that I recommend this book wholeheartedly. Maraniss does a fantastic job of creating an incredibly readable work and his research here shines through. Interviews with former friends, old letters, yearbook signatures...! If you want to gain a better understanding of Bill Clinton, both his strengths and weaknesses, I strongly urge you to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars FIRST among Clinton Bios.......2007-08-16

As a Clinton fan, I read all of the bios and his autobiography. "First" remains my favorite because it details Clinton's evolution from a boy born into less than ideal circumstances with only 3 assets---an adoring mother, scholastic achievement and a singleminded goal to become president---to making the american dream come true. I recently purchased another copy for my nephew, who is shopping colleges. This is a must read for all who doubt the power of education to change your life not just for the better, but for the best.

4 out of 5 stars A candid look at Bill Clinton the man and political animal........1996-10-09

The intoxicating power of politics gives meaning to a young man's world. The book presents an interesting insight into Clinton's thirst for political and personal acceptance

5 out of 5 stars Not a celebrity bio. Excellent work. Must Read For '96........1996-02-07

NOT your standard political biography. Excellent example of the craft of biography, regardless of the subject. This reads reads like fiction and author David Maraniss clearly deserved his Pulitzer for his balanced reporting on the Clinton '92 campaign. The 400+ page book ends with Clinton's announcement for president. This goes a long way to explain why Clinton is the way he is. Love or hate him you can't be indifferent. A must read before the electiion

        Book Description

As more and more people are discovering, Alzheimer's disease is the worst kind of thief. Over time, it robs those who suffer from it of the treasure of their memories and the sharpness of their minds. In "The Long Good Night" Daphne Simpkins chronicles the slow, sometimes heartbreaking decline of her father from the disease, but also contradicts the prevailing opinion that caregivers can experience only suffering and chaos during this difficult season.

As Simpkins writes about what she calls her father's "disappearing act," she illuminates the tremendous toll that this disease takes. "Alzheimer's doesn't happen to one person," she explains. "It claims the community of people who love the person with the disease. The care is constant, the demands profound." But her book is far more than a recounting of the long journey into the deep night of the disease. It is a loving memoir of a good father and a good man. It is a powerful portrait of a close family whose bonds are strained but ultimately strengthened by the challenge of caring for him. And, perhaps most surprisingly, it is a remarkably uplifting account of that experience.

The grief in the tale that Simpkins tells is balanced by love, faith, hope — and humor. The humor arises naturally, almost miraculously, out of the stories Simpkins tells, a series of vignettes about her family's daily life. Alzheimer's is admittedly a dark subject, but Simpkins brings as much natural light and levity to it as circumstances allow.

"The Long Good Night" is "a memoir about love rather than an elegy about a disease," Simpkins says. It will give caregivers cause for honest hope, and its many other readers a wonderfully nuanced story of love and laughter amid the ruins of illness — a story that both illuminates the tragedy of Alzheimer's and powerfully transcends it.

        5 out of 5 stars A Memoir of Magnitude.......2003-12-23

Someone has said, "It's easy to write. You just sit down at the keyboard and open a vein." Mrs. Simpkins opens a vein and her heart in "The Long Good Night." At the core of this heart the reader will re-discover a need and a secret. The need is love and the secret in love's definition. Absent of pride and praise, Simpkins simply tells the truth regarding her father's Alzheimer's and the telling demonstrates 1 Cor. 13 in action. The episode, indeed,is a long journey, a journey of pain and frustration. It is also a memoir of love, loyalty and laughter. So, take this journey with Ms Simpkins. Cross some narrow bridges. Pass through a tunnel or two. Encounter more than one detour. When "The Long Good Night" is over, bask in the Son shining through. There could be no better refreshment or reward.

5 out of 5 stars The Long Good Night: My Father's Journey into Alzheimer's.......2003-12-16

Ms. Simpkins has a real talant for storytelling and keeps the reader engaged throughout this journey. If you have a friend going through the struggles of dealing with Alzheimers, this book will give you a window into their new world, the good the bad and the ugly. If you have not experienced, it but know friends that have, you know how helpless you feel watching them in this new world, and you will be able to let them know that you are thinking about them and praying for them and above all -- you "get it."

5 out of 5 stars heartwarming and inspirational.......2003-10-12

This book is a heartwarming story which spotlights the struggles of a family hit with the difficulty of alzheimers. Ms. Simpkins is able to engage the reader in laughter at the awkward moments the disease inevitably brings to life expereinces but she also enables us to feel the pain of her father's slipping away into another, unfaamiliar world. This is a must read for anyone whose home has been touched by this disease.

The necktie is perhaps one of the most varied sources of interesting and unusual fabrics. Though some are notoriously ugly, many are good-looking, even stunning. They can often be had for very little money at thrift shops and yard sales--or for free right out of the back of the closet when their owner is tired of them. Noted crafter Shirley Botsford has transformed these variegated strips of silk, wool, cotton, and even polyester into a variety of items. The more than 30 projects include quilts, scarves, purses, vests, lampshades, pillows, covered boxes, Christmas stockings, and stuffed animals. From finding old ties and taking them apart to the step-by-steps of transforming them into all sorts of colorful objects,Daddy's Ties is full of charming ideas.

This is a well written craft book that gives plenty of ideas for using ties in crafts. My father recently passed away and he had many ties. Using this book I can make something for myself, my sister and brother using his ties as a remembrance.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Lifetime in Ties.......2007-08-06

A treasure trove for anyone who is looking for ideas to use those old ties hanging in the closet or hiding somewhere in a dresser drawer.

Whether the ties are a memory of a persons lifetime, or tucked away in a box in the attic or just having too many; this 96 page book with its color illustrations, simplistic and step-by-step instruction is excellent and a must have for those seeking wonderful and illustrative patterns.

Instructions on how to use the ties in this book has a myriad of ideas and is welcomed and definitely worth its weight in gold.

Thank you Shirley Botsford for your insightful book.

I really liked the book. Not only did it give me good ideas, it also included patterns that I could use. All of the instructions are easy to understand. I am not a crafty person but wanted to make something for my kids from their dad's ties for christmas. This book has so many good idea's that I am having a hard time trying to figure out what one to do. I may just have to keep doing projects until I run out of ties.

2 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I was looking for.......2007-02-22

I am probably like most of the people who are searching for a book like this, I want to make something useful, beautiful, practical, etc. from the numerous ties that the men in my life are no longer using (for various reasons- changing tastes, or fashion, just plain worn-out, or becuase they have passed away.) I found this book to be wanting in the areas of my greatest interest. It seemed like too much emphasis was placed on acquiring ties, like how to word a classified ad, and where to look at thrift shops. I wanted some more guidance in the actual assembly of the projects, and this book just didn't provide that.
I also have to admit I was a bit put off by the photo of the author displaying her 'creations' she gave the me impression of a gypsy. The items she made are not attractive, and not at all what I was looking for. I wanted a book that would show me how to assemble the ties into a pretty wall hanging, pillow or quilt, not a funky hat or vest and skirt.

"Daddy's Ties" is a perfect book for anyone who wants to make something from all the great ties you can find. The pictures are fantastic, colorful, and very inventive! The instructions are thoughtful and in depth. This is a unique book for quilters and crafters alike.

Fibroids are "solid lumps of muscle and connective tissue" that grow in and around the uterus and are almost always benign. They are the result of "a single cell gone wild," but why this happens is a mystery. They affect from 20 to 80 percent of women. Although some women have no symptoms, others experience abnormal uterine bleeding and pelvic pain or pressure. Fibroids can trigger miscarriage, preterm labor, and sometimes infertility. Author Johanna Skilling sees fibroids as "an interruption" of your uterus, blood flow, physical well-being, and lifestyle, as well as a disruption of your self-image and self-esteem, which may leave you feeling shamed, damaged, and helpless.

Skilling is not a doctor; she is a woman with fibroids. When she was diagnosed, she read everything she could find, interviewed medical experts, and compiled stories from other women. She presents information about conventional medical treatments, alternative therapies, and diet, along with tips, anecdotes, and humor (for example, the "top 10 things you resemble while taking an MRI" includes "one of those pretzels with cheese filling" and "a lime wedge in the neck of a beer bottle"). Skilling's aim in writing this book is to provide both a source of information about fibroids and a "support group in a book" for women with fibroids to find comfort and sharing. She succeeds. --Joan Price

                        Book Description

When Johanna Skilling was diagnosed with fibroid tumors, she was confused by treatment recommendations that ranged from "watch and wait" to total hysterectomy. Even more frustrated by the lack of data about fibroids, she set out to close the information gap.

Skilling explores the medical, emotional, and sexual implications of a fibroid diagnosis simply and thoroughly; explains what fibroids are, what influences their growth, what to expect after a diagnosis, and how to live with fibroids if surgery isn't chosen; and discusses traditional and alternative treatments and the mind-body connection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2004-03-24

This book was one of the most helpful I've found in my years of dealing with my fibroids. Johanna Skilling also wrote a similar book in the First Year series, also excellent. I found the information was well-researched, based on my own years of scouring the internet and libraries for clues to this under-researched health issue. While fibroids aren't a huge problem for some women, for others their lives ARE permanently altered. This book presents the best information available to date, in a manner that is easily accessible to the lay person. I especially like that the author has herself gone through the process of choosing the best treatment option for her own case of fibroids. I came to the same conclusion that she did, and chose the same option for treatment. It was helpful to read someone else's decision-making process.

This is a great book to calm you down when you first get the scary news. It explains it all very well. Then pick up Allan Warshowsky's (I think that's how it's spelled)"Guide to a Natural Cure." Both are excellent. My symptoms are going away and the last time I saw my doctor she said they had not grown any more.

This book sent my husband and me into a state of panic. The author would have you believe that a diagnosis of fibroids is something that alters the course of the rest of your life, and that every diagnostic test and therapeutic procedure is incredibly painful and invasive. That may be the case for some women, but not for all. We turned to this book after I was diagnosed with fibroids and, rather than giving us the information we needed to make educated decisions, it made us fearful of each step in the process. As it turned out, my fibroid (singular, something the book would have you believe never occurs)was removed surgically and I was back to work within 3 weeks, and my life has gone on quite happily. For women who don't know what to do when diagnosed with fibroids, I would recommend getting information from your doctor -- not this book!

                        5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2001-10-28

I finally found this book! This author was a fibroid victim and it makes a big difference because a book published by a doctor is hard to understand and the reports they write are in medical languages. Questions that I've asked myself many months ago, were answered by the author. It is easy to read and understand. This book is a real eye-opener for me, especially when I am going through this the 3rd time. You don't know how much of a relieve it was when I found this book. Unfortunately our bookstore in Chicago do not have alot of books relating to fibroids or such. To end this review, definitely worth buying and is a good source of reference.

4 out of 5 stars Claudel: Rodin's greatest student --.......2005-10-31

                        -- and greatest teacher.

Mme. Paris has written a brief but affectionate, even zealous book on the life and career of Camille Claudel. It summarizes her upbringing in a bougeois but emotionally austere houshold. Perhaps she was never encouraged in her art. At least she was never actively discouraged, and did find some creative kinship in her brother Paul.

Her rise was meteoric. By her twenties, she was producing major work of remarkable expressiveness. Art was a man's world then. With its physical demands of stone and foundry work, sculpture was considered the most masculine among arts. Still, Boucher and then Rodin took her on as student and muse. According to Mme. Paris, Rodin's style owes much to Claudel - perhaps acknowledged in his "Eternal Idol," where the male figure kneels in obeisance and passion before the female.

The passion was real. Claudel lived with Rodin for more than a decade, and it has been claimed that his art stultified when she left him. Rodin remained fond of her until he died, but her leaving may have marked the start of Claudel's tragedy. Her mind gradually turned against itself. Irrational fears took command of her life, and her ability to tend her own needs slowly failed. About age forty, she was committed to an asylum for the insane. She never recovered, and died after more than thirty years of custody. Part of this book reproduces the letters from her years of confinement, and correspondence relating to her care.

The small body of work she left documents that tragedy. There's no sign in it of her illness, but her ouvre shows what she was and hints at what she could have become. Her illness stole her talent, not only from herself, but from the world as well.

                        4 out of 5 stars A STORMY RELATIONSHIP.......2004-04-20

Books have been written and films produced about the stormy relationship between sculptor Auguste Rodin and promising sculptress Camille Claudel. Few liaisons have been as artistically fruitful or as emotionally turbulent.

In an attempt to freshly evaluate her work, this concise volume examines Claudel's impact upon Rodin's work, her family background, and her tragic descent into mental instability.

According to most biographers, Rodin's affection for Claudel continued even after their final separation as he continued to use her as a model. Perhaps the most poignant reminder of her is found in "The Thought," a pale, melancholy study.

Rich with illustrations by of works by both Rodin and Claudel, this title sheds new light on one of the most dramatic partnerships in the world of art.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Look at an all-too-politicized relationship.......2001-11-06

I found this book engaging and very interesting. The relationship between Claudel and Rodin is examined fully and with an eye to historical accuracy. Though some may wish to champion the cause of an artist largely unrecognized in important critical scholarship, such politicization of an historical event to meet modern aims is untenable at best. For those seeking an honest, thoughtful account of a dynamic and difficult relationship between a premier artist and an aspiring sculptor this book is worth the read. The reproductions are dazzling in quality and the design is pleasing and neat.

1 out of 5 stars downgrading Claudel to a copy of Rodin.......1999-05-21

Camille Claudel was too genuine, too proud an artist to ever allow her work to be a copy of Rodin's. Who knows maybe it should be the other way: Rodin copying Claudel...

1 out of 5 stars An uninspired work that lacks insight........1998-07-22

Schmoll has taken the party line on this piece and looks at every reason to discredit Claudel to the benefit of Rodin. Criticism of Claudel goes so far as to imply that her best works could have been touched up by Rodin. Schmoll even takes time to nitpick at Claudel's looks, pointing out that they were marred by a "weak" chin. From the beginning Schmoll compares the work of a young girl's in her 20's to that of a man in his 40's. It is one of the poorest critical studies of an artist that this reader has ever read.

                        Book Description

Fateful Encounter focuses on the relationship between two headstrong artists who for a while worked in close collaboration and then tried to find their own separate ways. Although Camille was determined to carve out a niche of her own by focusing on her "sketches from nature" (scenes of daily life captured as they happened), she found it extremely difficult. Rodin fared better and in 1898 created Balzac, the work that he himself described as the "linchpin of his aesthetic". In 1899, with Rodin's creation of another masterpiece, The Age of Maturity, Camille reaffirmed her desire to break off relations with him. From 1900, with Rodin at the forefront of the art scene, Camille gradually slid into madness and was soon unable to create. Fateful Encounter is the catalogue to an exhibition in which Camille and Rodin once more come face to face. It's an illuminating joint appraisal of their work with each represented by an equal number of pieces of similar importance.

"The beautiful, talented, witty, and fiercely independent Camille Claudel first met the great Auguste Rodin when she was only 17 and he was 41. She became his fellow sculptor, his muse, his model, and his lover. As he gained fame she struggled against the social and artistic limitations placed upon women artists in the nineteenth century.

"For the first time in the United States the special exhibition, Camille Claudel & Rodin: Fateful Encounter (at the DIA [Detroit Institute of Arts] October 9, 2005 -February 5, 2006) brings together the works they shared and the works they created apart before Claudel's life crumbled under the weight of a shattered relationship, mental illness, and the prejudices of her world.

"Bring a piece of this special exhibition home today through this extraordinary book."
