OUR SMALLEST TOWNS.......2001-02-08
I'M A MUSIC PRODUCER AND I LIVE IN THE CITY - NEW YORK CITY. LIKE MANY, I CONSUME IT, AND IT CONSUMES ME. DENNIS KITCHEN'S BOOK 'OUR SMALLEST TOWNS' IS LITERALLY A WAY OUT. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE THE TRIP WITHOUT HAVING TO MOVE YOUR BODY, GET DENNIS'S BOOK. FOR SOME IT WILL BE AN ADVENTURE, FOR OTHERS, A MEDITATION. ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT, 'OUR SMALLEST TOWNS' IS A COMPREHENSIVE AND COMPELLING STUDY OF AMERICANA. IT IS A PICTURE STORY, IF YOU WILL, TOLD WITH GRACE AND STYLE AND ART, THAT WILL TAKE YOU AWAY.
Where's that population explosion we hear about!.......2000-04-26
Here's a simple idea that worked great! Dennis Kitchen thought it would be fun to visit each of the 50 states and take a picture of the entire population of the smallest community in each. And that's basically what this book is - 50 panoramic photos of groups of beaming citizens posing in the midst of their tiny towns. Part of the genius of the thing is that the wide-angle lens shows not only the people, but also captures the buildings, streets, trees, mountains, and local dogs - i.e., what makes each community unique. The other part is that all but one of the communities fell right in with the author's idea (in that instance he shot the town but not the people). The text accompanying the photos recounts the ingenious ways some of the mayors devised to encourage their townsfolk to all be at the same place at the same time (not always 100-percent successful, but always close). Also recounted are various citizens' wry observations about life in a very small town. And when you ponder the photos, you realize that the folks looking out at you know a lot more about each other than a bookful of photos could reveal. But that's how it gets in small towns. All in all, this book leaves me feeling that just about anyone would be welcome in these 50 spots, even without a camera.
Product Description
William Howard Taft declared, "I am sure the automobile coming in as a toy of the wealthier class is going to prove the most useful of them all to all classes, rich and poor." Unlike his predecessors, who made public their disdain for the automobile, Taft saw the automobile industry as a great source of wealth for this country. The first president to acquire a car in office (Congress granted him three automobiles), Taft is responsible for there being a White House garage in 1909. This is a meticulously researched reappraisal of the oft-maligned Taft presidency focusing particularly on his cars, his relationship to the automobile and the role of the automobile in the politics of his day. Appendices provide information on the White House garage and stable, Taft's speech to the Automobile Club of America and a glossary of terms and names.
Customer Reviews:
Great read!.......2004-03-13
I found this book for a research project for school, and I was captivated by it. It's a fresh look at the progressive era, and, as far as I can tell, the first happy look at the Taft presidency around. I read the Pringle book, too, and was I glad that the Bromley book references areas of disagreement with Pringle, which helped me make my own conclusions. The Pringle book and all the other biographies of Taft are stale. This one stands out! Above all, the text flows easily and the story moves in and out of an amazing array of information presented. A must for any student of the progressive era, and a fun time for anyone who enjoys history.
Book Description
Terry Fox, the one-legged runner from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, made an indelible impression upon people across Canada and around the world. An outstanding athlete with a stubborn and competitive spirit, he lost his leg to cancer at 19, but said “nobody is ever going to call me a quitter.”
On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox set out from St. John’s, Newfoundland to begin the run across Canada that he named the Marathon of Hope. His ambition was to raise a million dollars for cancer research. It wasn’t easy. Initial support from communities varied from terrific to nothing at all. His prosthetic leg was painful to run on, and there were always traffic and extreme weather conditions to deal with. But, by the time he reached Ontario – a journey of more than 3,000 kilometres – word of his achievement had spread, and thousands cheered him and followed his progress. Terry’s spirits soared, and now he hoped to raise $22 million dollars – one dollar for every Canadian. He succeeded in this ambition, but the Marathon of Hope ended near Thunder Bay, Ontario on September 1, 1980. The cancer had spread to his lungs, and, after running 24 miles in one day, on the next he could run no further.
When cancer finally claimed his life in 1981, Canada mourned the loss of a hero, but the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope lives on. The Terry Fox Foundation raised more than $17 million in 1999, and support for the event nationally and around the world is growing.

Inspiring.......2006-12-07
On harsh moments, Terry's story seems to be the reminder and remmedy. An inspiring life. A must read book!
Terry Fox: Greatest Canadian Hero.......2005-08-11
This is a great inside look at the inspirational life, and especially the three thousand plus mile 1980 trek, of Terry Fox. If you don't know who Terry Fox is, shame on you... You need to read this book. If you do know who Terry Fox is, read this book to bring back the memories of this selfless hero. The book has been updated since its original publishing 25 years ago and still has the inside story from Terry's family and friends, as well as his own words from interviews and journal entries. If you are interested in Terry Fox, you should check out the Terry Fox Foundation website as well as the newly published "Terry" by Douglas Coupland.
wonderful book.......2004-11-29
Terry Fox His Story is a wonderful and intriguing book about a young man who touched my heart in ways you couldn't imagine. I felt that I was right there with him all the time and I knew what he was going through.
This is a book about a young man who had a wild dream. Running across Canada. The really unbelievable thing about this is Terry lost his leg to bone cancer. By the time he died he had raised more than 24 million dollars for cancer research. Because of Terry we are getting closer and closer to a cure for this horrible disease!
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. It taught me to take a hold on life and to not let it slip away. If everyone read about this amazing young man I'm sure the world would be a better place!!
A good biography.......2003-10-31
"Terry Fox: His Story" tells of the life of a man who needs little introduction the world over. Terry's one-legged run halfway across Canada in 1980 is a story of great national pride here, and indeed many countries have caught on to the spirit. Terry's tragic, heroic story is commemorated every year with the fundraising "Terry Fox Run", held around the world, with the proceeds going towards cancer research.
"His Story" succeeds in providing a comprehensive, if not overly personal, look at Terry's life. I was also impressed by the dynamic and care given to the run itself, as it progressed from one location/town to another. Not every city was as enthusiastic as the last one, for instance, and the author takes care to show how Terry learns to respond to these varying regional reactions, and learns to become a very capable public speaker. The author also takes great care to show that the running was not easy work for Terry, that on many days he simply physically could not accomplish what he set out to do. It makes what he did accomplish all that much more impressive.
All in all, I was left with a new respect for Terry as a result of reading this book. As an occasional runner myself, I know how difficult it is to get up, on two legs, and go. Which makes you wonder, if Terry Fox could jog nearly a marathon every day for six months on one leg, by comparison, what excuse has anybody else got to not do anything?

Customer Reviews:
Great Yummy Grenade Fun!.......2006-11-19
Ok, what do you mean this book has no "functional" knits. I must disagree, having made the cake and sandwhich for my niece to use with her tea set. The grenade bag gets lots of comments from "oh how neat"! to "why". Just don't use it as a purse if you plan on flying, those security guys just don't get the joke.
.·:*¨¨*:·.SO.·:*¨¨*:·.MUCH.·:*¨¨*:·.FUN!!!!!.·:*¨¨*:·..·:*¨¨*:·........2006-09-27
Knitorama is pure sillyness and fun. It's definitely for the knitting obsessed. You have a knitted ham sandwich, a knitted cake, knitted lingerie and the sillyness continues. I really love the socks with the flowers growing on them.
Purely imaginative, it would be a great gift for someone TOTALLY OBSESSED BEYOND BELIEF with knitting or a teenager between the ages of 10 and 18.
It's knitting as art.
It doesn't have to be functional to be fun!.......2006-01-20
I am a very beginner knitter and have been uninspired to improve my skills with the more functional books and patterns. This book with it's crazy, fun and non-funtional projects is just what I needed to inspire me. Who says everything you knit has to have a specific purpose? Lighten up, people! The imagery is fun and eye catching and I love the wacky models - you can tell the author and all those involved had alot of fun putting this book together. And P.S. - the rounded corners are such a nice touch!
No functional knits.......2006-01-18
I wouldn't make anything in this book other than the grenade and the purple lace underwear (which look really quite pretty). Everything else seems like knit knick-knacks: fried egg, vegetables, cake, a pint of stout, etc. It's quirky and fun but I like my knits to be more functional.
I Like It!!.......2005-12-28
It's odd, it's different and it's British - what's not to love?!? Very neatly packaged book with a good informative section and accessible projects which some might view as oddities, however I have state - just how many sweaters can a person own and use? Sometimes it's good to get off the beaten track and do something different. This is it.

comprehensive and easy to use gardening book.......1999-12-04
Easily one of the best gardening books i own. This book is thoughtfully organized to be useful and intuitive to everyone - even those who have never grown a plant before in their life. The herbs are indexed in both common, family and latin names, with descriptions and numerous photos of many varieties of each herb. Propogation and growing tips (focusing on a natural, organic approach whenever possible) are included for all plants, all of which are specific and helpful. Like whether or not a specific plant grows well in containers; what type of soil and moisture an herb prefers; if the herb flowers beautifully for a week and then gets leggy, ugly and topples over; if it reseeds aggressively; or if it is plagued by one particular pest or another. There are also wonderful histories and descriptions of common uses - whether they be for culinary use, medicinal, fragrancing, or fabric dying - as well as any possible usage warnings. Also included are sections devoted to proper soil preparation - with several soil "recipes" for different plant needs, tips on pruning and starting from seed. There are also several garden plans set up by theme and space available (dying garden, kitchen garden, bath garden, etc.) If you grow - or would like to grow - herbs, this book is indespensible for seasoned gardeners or novices.

Customer Reviews:
A Guidebook for Christian Parents.......2007-05-16
I agree 100% with the reviewer that said this book should be sub-titled 'A Guidebook for Christian Parents'. Personally, I don't appreciate his religious bent and I think it should be clearly stated that this is where he is coming from.
20 Rules Every Parent Must Know to Survive.......2005-08-18
Dr. Leman's book is a down-to-earth handbook for parents navigating the difficult waters of adolescence. He doesn't mince words, and he backs up his advice with studies and his own experience as a family counselor. I found his advice right on the mark for dealing with my 14-year-old as well as my 12-year-old, although they have very different personalities. I bought a copy for future reference after reading the library's copy and loaning it to several friends. Those library fines can really add up!
adolescence isn't terminal.......2005-06-29
They were handing these books out for the parents at my old school so I decided to read it.
First of all, Kevin Leman seems to be a very conservitive republican. He says you should read your kids the Bible to show them that God wants them to wait until marrage for sex. This is not called "A Guidebook for Christian Parents," so I'm sure that people of many other religions are reading this book. Also, if kids want to have sex, parents telling them not to is not going to stop them. If you tell them just not to do it, they will go at it anyways without any protection.
In another part of the book, he says that a divorce can cause girls to sexually mature faster. What he is suggesting is to not get divorced. What he did not mention, however, was the effects that fighting parents can have on children.
He seems to think that all teenagers are ashamed of their parents and will not listen to them just because it is the parents that are telling them to do things. Can you get any more steroetypical? I'm sure if any teen saw their parents reading a book that all it does is describe teens they would be furious. This is because NOT ALL TEENS ARE THE SAME!!!! Just because we are under the age of 21 does not mean we all have a little conference and plan how we are all going to act the same way and make our parents miserable.
For the good of your children, do not buy this book. Remember they are individuals!!!! And just for the record, his "humor" is pathetic!
I know I am going to get negative feedback, and I understand because there are the arguments that I am only a teenager myself so I don't understand things about raising one. But I hope that you try to understand my views because, after all, this book is about people like me.
Every parent needs this book!!.......2004-07-25
I checked this out from the library and it was such a wonderful resource I am now ordering a copy to keep!!
An Absolute Must for Parents.......2002-12-26
Way to go Dr. Leman!
This book is chock full of research, practice, case studies and empirical wisdom that every parent should tap into.
Want to get along with your teen or tween? Do you want to evolve from an "uncool parent" to being a respected support system your kid(s) can count on? This book is for you.
With an easy, to read format you can change your relationship with your child within minutes of your first browse through.
Great investment!
Book Description
Alvaro Siza (1933) studied at the School of Architecture of the University of Oporto.Between 1955 and 1958 he worked in the studio of Fernando Tavora.he embarked on his professional career with the Boa Nova Restaurant (Leca da Palmeira, 1963).In this initial phase, his works combined modern typology with the vernacular tradition.Nonetheless, he constantly returns to clear volumes, like the great white parallellepiped of Avelino Duarte House (Ovar, 1985), which brings together all his earlier experience of housing typologies, including his major intervention in this area Quinta da Malagueira (Evora, 1977).Since the eighties, he has been commissioned to carry out a wide variety of porjects, ranging from the Santiago de Compostela Museum of Contemporary Art (1993) to the School of Education in Setubal (1992).
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Overview.......2006-10-30
If you want to get a fine overview of Siza's works, this book might be just fine. It inculdes a short presentation of all of his works, the major buildings are featured more extensively. There are plenty of Siza's beautiful sketches and abstract line drawings might clarify his projects sufficiently (how could the editor oversee that the faculty of Porto is mirrored?). It is remarkable that most of the photos do not present the the projects in the just finished state, but how they look like right now, making plain how gracefully Siza's buildings get older. I have to agree that Le Croquis might show his major buildings more in depth and documents far more Siza's own point of view with two long interviews, however this edition is for sure worth the money.
A good book of the architect of the moment!.......2001-03-17
Some people say Siza is the architect of the white! Probably, if whe can understand that the white colour of his facades is the consequence of his absolutly control of plans and forms. He is a genius! This book is a good way to show almost all works of Siza. For me there is only one book that is better than this one: "Alvaro Siza - the book, from ElCroquis".But anyway, buy this book if you want to understand the genius of Alvaro Siza.
Book Description
This richly illustrated book examines the houses designed by Alvaro Siza, one of the masters of contemporary architecture. The 28 villas represent an important aspect of Siza's career, where his distinctive ideas on home design translate into a wider conversation on living today and modern architecture.
Each construction is narrated by Alvaro Siza through his short poetic writings, a technical description, and a series of sketches. Also included are accounts written by Siza's clients, which bear witness to the complex dialogue behind the design of each house. The volume also features two visual essays based on a selection of drawings by Siza and impeccable photographs of his work.
Alvaro Siza is one of today's greatest living architects and the father of the new architectural minimalism. This book will be a must for the bookshelf of architects and students.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2005-05-03
Alvaro Siza is a true architectural genius and this book does a wonderful job to illustrate his great many talents and vision. The poems placed throughout the book add a special flavor. As an architect, I also appreciated the detailed photos. A must book for architects and Siza's fans!

Book Description
Studio Paperback monographs on the outstanding architects of the 20th century-concise and informative overviews of their complete works written and edited by noted authors. Each volume contains biographical details and a work chronology.
Customer Reviews:
Copiously illustrated review of 50 major works.......2005-10-29
This is a concise and copiously illustrated paperback survey of all major buildings and projects from 1958 to 1994 published under ISBN: 3764355980 by Birkhäuser (Basel...) and ISBN: 0817955980 by Birkhäuser (Boston) on only 208 pages in English and German side by side. After 7 pages of analysis about the architect's style, each of the presented 50 works is headed by a description from just a few lines to over a page long followed by from one to several illustrations depending on work's scope. All of 300 only B&W (some multi-picture) illustrations - many technical (plans, sections, sketches, elevations, etc.), but also B&W photos of a good quality - are well balanced, superbly crisp and perfectly legible. A biography, selected bibliography, list of works, etc. on several pages end it. Like all from the Studio Paperback series, it is solid among architectural monographs even of a bigger size. Similar to smaller books from the Works and Projects series published by Gustavo Gili (GG) in English and Spanish.

Siza's master drawings.......2000-04-14
In this wonderful book by Birkhauser/editors we become aware of Siza's spectacular drawings. This ones are just about cities. With a few lines and also in very few minutes Siza "catches" the spirit and structure of the spaces habited by him. Siza is a very good architect, of course. He is also someone who loves to draw; almost anywhere and anytime.

Customer Reviews:
craftsmanship & assemblage.......2000-10-07
i purchased this book in 1998 and very much enjoyed it. some large format detail drawings indicate a thinking through process that shows a learning process but also very good clean slate approach to detailing. the wood craftsmanship stands out and makes us remember earlier american wood joinery details which are really cross cultural. low key but extremely well detailed modern builidngs somewhat aaltoesque in flavor.
