A superb book, well layed out, with great illustrations and information to help any tree lover what ever the end result they have in mind for their trees. Could only be improved by adding photos of each trees timber.

Book Description
In 1976 Gelya Frank began writing about the life of Diane DeVries, a woman born with all the physical and mental equipment she would need to live in our society--except arms and legs. Frank was 28 years old, DeVries 26. This remarkable book--by turns moving, funny, and revelatory--records the relationship that developed between the women over the next twenty years. An empathic listener and participant in DeVries's life, and a scholar of the feminist and disability rights movements, Frank argues that Diane DeVries is a perfect example of an American woman coming of age in the second half of the twentieth century. By addressing the dynamics of power in ethnographic representation, Frank--anthropology's leading expert on life history and life story methods--lays the critical groundwork for a new genre, "cultural biography."
Challenged to examine the cultural sources of her initial image of DeVries as limited and flawed, Frank discovers that DeVries is gutsy, buoyant, sexy--and definitely not a victim. While she analyzes the portrayal of women with disabilities in popular culture--from limbless circus performers to suicidal heroines on the TV news--Frank's encounters with DeVries lead her to come to terms with her own "invisible disabilities" motivating the study. Drawing on anthropology, philosophy, psychoanalysis, narrative theory, law, and the history of medicine, Venus on Wheels is an intellectual tour de force.

surviving with severe handicaps.......2007-07-10
At times, the book can be an uncomfortable read. Frank describes cases of women with varying degrees of disability, and their experiences of growing up and making a living in the US. Some examples are extreme indeed. Like Diana, born with no arms and legs in 1950. You could cringe at trying to imagine yourself in her situation. Yet somehow, she managed to cope.
Several others are chronicled here. Often trying to resist the expectation of wearing artificial arms and legs; by wanting to decide how they would appear in public. The book applies anthropological analysis to studying these unfortunate women.
Keep in mind that the various protheses described in the book are now somewhat outdated. Better fitting, easier to use protheses have been developed in recent years. With the promise of ongoing improvements. Ironically driven in no small part by the US military casualties in Iraq.

meh.. there's better books out there.......2007-05-25
This booklet isn't bad, but it is mostly example projects to go through. After being only magazine size and 64 pages, that leaves little room for tips, instruction of advice. Being generous, its the first 18 pages where there is any info that's useful.
I would recommend looking elsewhere, such as Machine Quilting Made Easy or Easy Machine Quilting.

It's not what I was expecting. No good for beginers.
Show Me How to Machine Quilt.......2007-02-01
I was very pleased with the condition of the book I received. The service was very prompt. Thanks.
Great Fun!!.......2005-12-01
Thank you Kathy Sandbach! I LOVE your book!!
I couldn't wait to read it all and just picked out patterns and had a go! Liberating, easy to follow and fun! With practise, I can do them all, not to this lady's standard yet, but I'm getting there and improvising with a little 'kiwi' ingenuity along the way...Until I picked up this book, I wasn't a quiltmaker at all, -just a quilt top maker...my how things have changed!
Show Me How to Machine Quilt: A Fun, No-Mark Approach.......2005-10-29
For those of us who aren't artists or doodelers, this gives us great ideas of what to put on all those tops we have made. If you can't picture a design to be put on top of your beautiful square......this helps. It is a great guide to get on with the next step and actually "quilt".

Good, Basic Information.......2000-11-12
This is a handy little book if you need a quick source of basic cultural information about a particular orchid. The book contains 250 color photos over 160 types of orchid species and hybrids. This makes it a valuable aid in identifying those mystery orchids that we all seem to come across.
Book Description
Barbara Harper outlines the elements of gentle birthing: support from loved ones, a reassuring and quiet environment with soft lighting, and minimal medical intervention. She shows you how to plan a meaningful, family-centered birth experience and discusses the many alternatives available, providing a new model of maternity care that reduces the need for high-tech crisis intervention and focuses instead on preparation and good health for mother and child.
With Cesarean section rates in some hospitals at more than 50%, women are acknowledging that childbirth reform is an essential aspect of reclaiming responsibility for our bodies and our lives.
Includes information on:
â¢Â Giving birth in a freestanding birthing center, at home, or in a hospital birthing room.
â¢Â Finding a primary care-giver who shares your philosophy of birth, whether midwife, doctor, or both.
â¢Â Deciding how to best use current technologies.
â¢Â Practical advice for couples wishing to explore the option of waterbirth, a choice that maximizes the attributes of water as a natural, pain-relieving relaxant and an alternative to drugs and their unwanted side effects.Â

Great book about reclaiming birth.......2007-07-02
When I was pregnant, I read many books, wanting to explore the many options that I had. I ultimately decided on birthing in a hospital, but with a doula and a midwife. While I knew that both would work to assist me in a natural birth, I still felt unsure of whether or not *I* could handle it. Often, pregnant women are told horror stories of the pain, of how most women are "screaming" for an epidural, of what can go wrong in labor. Very rarely are gentle, beautiful birthing stories told.
For me, this is where this book comes in to play. I did not read this book looking for knowledge and factual information on birth, I'd already gleaned that from several other books. I read this book wondering if a gentle birth was truly attainable.
I read this book a few weeks before my due date. After finishing it, I truly felt at peace with my body and with my decision to pursue a natural birth. Sure, I still had my doubts, but after reading about all the women who had NCB in many different settings, I felt strongly that I could do it. And a few weeks later, I DID. Once labor began, I probably forgot everything I read, but what I didn't forget was the sense that I was just one of many women who embarked on a journey toward a gentle birth, and that if other women could do it, SO COULD I. My memories of my son's birth are gentle and peaceful, most of it spent in the water with my midwife holding my hands and my doula massaging me through contractions. My only regret is not having my husband read this book, too, as I think he was more nervous than I was. The accompanying DVD is also something I found immensly helpful. Neither my husband nor I had ever seen birth, but this DVD gave us an idea of what to expect. While it helped to calm me, it really helped my husband when I was actually in labor because he knew that what was happening was normal and natural.
Should this be the only book you read while pregnant? NO! But then, I don't think there is any one book that really covers every little piece of information about pregnancy. Do I think this is a book that should be read by every pregnant woman? Yes, I do. Perhaps if more women read this book, pregnant women would no longer be treated to horror stories about birth, and instead, would know that, in most cases, it can be a gentle, loving process.

An interesting read.......2007-03-28
I did find this book very informative. I feel like it made me think or ask questions about why we tend to trust doctors more than our own bodies. Don't get me wrong I think doctors know very much what they are talking about most the time. But it did make sence to me how the book talked about how a normal healthy pregnancy many times is rushed or sent in for a c-section all for the sake of time. There were a few biased oppinions in the book. And some sections seemed repetative ( this is the reason for the 4 ) But I think over all it was not a waist of time. And as I do with all information I recieve it was taken with a grain of salt. Additional advice: try checking it out at the library before you decide to buy it or not. Depending on your beliefs this may or may not be the book for you.
Great Book! Fast Delivery! I'll gladly use this seller again........2007-03-10
This book arrived fast and in great condition. I'll gladly use this seller again. I'm a labor support assistant(birth doula,) and this book is very helpful in my job. Thanks for getting to me so fast.

It's always after they're gone..........2000-06-17
Jack was a friend of mine. I first saw him perform Thanksgiving night, 1979, up the stairs at the O-P Screen Room in lower Manhattan. He called it a Jungle Jack radio adventure and he read into a big old microphone from pages stored in a shoebox. He had a belly dancer whom he called Scheherezade Thompson read from Somerset Maughn's Rain. The audience was tiny and appreciative, but it went on for hours and hours. I felt privileged to be there, like I was watching the dust settle at the edge of eternity. This collection of essays about Jack is a necessity, because it can evoke his world, and it was a fascinating one. His humor and his eccentricity and his seriousness are all reflected in this collection. Today he is spoken of as a gay icon, but Jack did not regard his gayness as political. He was about glamor. I wish this book wasn't so expensive, because that will put off some of the folks who would benefit most from this. But it's worth it, folks. And, by the way, thanks a lot, Jack.
