A Good Take on Music of the Blue Ridge.......2003-07-22
I'll begin by saying I'm probably biased in favor of this book right from the start. (My name's in there!)
I've known that this project was in the works for some time, although I didn't know what the outcome would be. I got my copy a few days ago and was thoroughly impressed. The book is broken down by regions, all of which follow the Blue Ridge Parkway through North Carolina and Virginia. The musical culture highlights of each of the regions are covered in interesting detail, and often focuses on individuals who have been an important part of the musical heritage of the Blue Ridge.
The only downside to the book is that there are a few minor mistakes, such as events or venues being listed in the wrong regions. This is not a major problem, though, unless you actually intend to use it as a "guidebook." In this case it would be advisable to call ahead before making the trip. Hopefully these inaccuracies will be rectified in future editions.
I grew up listening to (and playing) bluegrass music and I'm always hungry for any new publications that covers the music I love. This one whets my appetite.

Give Yourself the Gift of Learning from Sarah.......2004-10-30
Nancy Jo Sullivan probably never dreamed that one day she'd "grow up" to write this book - sometimes life brings unexpected twists and turns that we can never imagine. In this wonderful book, Nancy Jo shares her experiences as a mom of three beautiful daughters, one of whom was born with Down syndrome. It's easy to fall in love with Sarah, "God's Princess", who succeeds in teaching us all many lessons in this book.
This is not just a book for parents of children with disabilities. It is a book for all of us, looking to count our blessings, love unconditionally, and never take the everyday treasures of life for granted. Nancy Jo ends each chapter of this book with a set of "ponderings", which will prompt you to ask yourself a few questions, consider a few new ideas and learn some valuable lessons from Sarah. Gift yourself the gift of this book and you will find yourself with a new, uplifted perspective on life.

Book Description
The mysteries of shadow knitting—a simple technique of alternating rows of dark and light yarn to produce a subtle patterning that appears and disappears depending on the angle from which it is viewed—are explored and refined here by a professional knitwear designer. The basic principles and techniques of shadow knitting are introduced through clear, well-illustrated instructions and are followed by spectacular projects that include winged shawls, squared bags, a matching cap and scarf, vests, sweaters, and Japanese-style kimonos. Each project is accompanied by step-by-step instructions and beautiful photographs.

Want to put a little magic in your projects ?.......2005-11-07
I am overly enchanted with this book, who would of thought that a little switch here and there would create a stunning result. Learn how to not only create a work of art, but a conversation piece that will have alot of people saying "how did you do that" (get the book so you can learn how).
A very old idea dressed in new clothes........2005-06-25
Nothing at all new in this book. Any experienced knitter has
been there before. Pretty colours & glossy pictures do not add
up to a worthwhile book for knitters.
Not all it could be.......2005-06-23
If you're looking to get into shadow/illusion knitting, this is, as far as I know, the most comprehensive book out there, and worth the price. Other books only offer very short "instruction" on it, which tends to eliminate necessary things like gauge, yarn content & needle selection.
This book is also chock full of beautiful colour photographs. And most (although, unfortunately not all) of them include shots from at least two angles, enabling the reader/knitter to see how the pattern should look from both angles, which can make the knitting of the item easier.
On the other hand, there is ZERO information on how to create your own patterns. Also, Høxbro has a tiring predilection for very geometric patterns, and this technique lends itself to so much more elaborate patterns than that. Annoyingly, everything seems to be in a "four row" pattern, and there are other options, which is given almost no mention.
While I'm glad I bought the book, and it's currently the most comprehensive widely available book, for the "expert" on the craft to issue such a woefully incomplete reference, especially after such a long delay, is terribly disappointing.
A knitting project & make the most of highlighting & shadows.......2005-02-08
Add color to a knitting project and make the most of highlighting and shadows with Shadow Knitting, which demonstrates how to use alternating rows of light and dark yarn to produce subtle patterns. Prior knitting experience and experience reading patterns will assist in the use of an excellent survey which includes everything from the charts and counting needed to produce special effects to color photos of complete projects and step-by-step directions.
Back to the drawing board.......2005-01-20
The adult sweater patterns in this book are completely disappointing. I agree completely with the reviewer who referred to "Cosby sweaters". The styles are so 80s, I had to check the copyright date on the book to convince myself it had been published recently. All of the garments are in big, boxy styles with large geometric shapes. The narrow striping needed to create the illusion makes all of the patterns very busy. As an adult woman who prefers simple, classic, and slightly fitted designs, I would never wear any of the sweaters from this book. Or carry either of the bags, for that matter. However, there are two children's sweater patterns in the book that look cute.
I've never bought any other book by this author so I'm not sure if the disappointing designs are due to the limitations of the technique (e.g. does shadow knitting work best if you're knitting something rectangular?) or the knitwear designers.
The shawls/scarf and the pillows seem to come closest to finding a balance between showing off the technique and making something pretty. I wish there had been something more along the lines of the Alien Illusion Scarf in Stitch n' Bitch. Not all shadow knitting needs to be done with geometric shapes!
The section on how to produce the shadow knitting effect is pretty clear. I feel like I can go ahead and chart my own illusion design, even if there are no explicit instructions on how you might do that. I really don't know if buying the whole book was worth it in the end though.

Customer Reviews:
Stop the Madness!!!.......2007-07-01
I am writing this review in response to the negative reviews that this book has received. In response to the person who stated that this was unrealistic the reality is that we are living in a society that is all about making money. There are simple answers to many of our health care problems but that information has been suppressed over many years by the people who make billions of dollars off of keeping us sick the health care industry. The drug companies have complete control over everything the finance the universities who train our doctors & "Nutritionist" to follow a protocol not to think for them selves. And if they try to think for themselves and treat patients outside of the protocols that they have been given they risk having their license revoked. Most Americans have come so accustom to the propaganda that has been feed us by the American Medical Assn., the Food and Drug Administration and The U.S. Dept. Of Agriculture that any idea other than what we have been feed is wrong. Well most of us do not have a Medical License to worry about loosing but we do have our health and our lives so it is best to keep an open mind and remember that a lot of the medical advise we are given is not for our benefit but for a multibillion dollar Health Care Industry.
Psoriasis Cure A drug-free guide to stopping & reversing the symptoms of psoriasis.......2007-03-09
Author Lisa LeVan makes her book easy to read and understand. Lisa herself has had Psoriasis too, so the skin condition is not just a theory for her, she tested her recommendations on herself. I'm very glad that I purchased her book, I have found it very useful. It is obvious that Lisa is a very intelligent woman, but I believe she didn't write this book to prove to the world how smart she is or an ego booster, she wanted to be helpful. I hope Lisa will write more books on this subject.
I was cleared in 3 weeks.......2006-01-19
I had terrible guttate psoriasis all over my entire body that morphed into plaqualar psoriasis--I suffered with it for six months, bad enough that I was bed-ridden. Even though I'd given up hope, someone bought me this book and I tried it. Using their diet "do's and don'ts" and supplement regimen (yes, it's like 60 vitamins a day. But when your body is crying out for help like that, severity is necessary). I was CLEARED...in three weeks. I almost wonder if the reason this is not known by all the world is because the insurance companies won't make money if everyone knew! Because, at least for me, this book really was a cure, and 4 years later, I've never had another outbreak. I combined this diet, by the way, with UV treatments (which had previously only helped temporarily).
Great Book - Get it. Read it. It will help you........2005-11-16
Finally, an easy to read and understand book that clearly explains what to do to get rid of psoriasis, how to do it, and why other methods commonly in use, such as lots of exposure to direct sunlight or UV light, are potentially very dangerous. Very practical and useful information. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has psoriasis or who has a friend or loved one with psoriasis. It is, as a friend of mine has said, "like a breath of fresh air".
Needs work.......2005-11-02
Psoriasis is an inflammatory response. Your immune system is overactive. Helping to control it through diet is an essential part of succesful treatment. If you get that part out of this book, great. But the diet here is extreme as the nutritionist's review states. You're better off with a book on treating inflammation such as Floyd Chilton's "Inflammation Nation". Also, as for "it works for me", a day in the ocean does more good than any drug I've ever used. Sun and salt water are wonderfull, not to mention stress reducing. A win all the way around. Hope this helps some of you fellow sufferers.

The Letters of Vincent van Gogh (Penguin Classics)

Customer Reviews:
Vincent Up Close & Personal.......2003-10-30
What an enlightening opportunity to be a fly on the wall reading letters from probably the most verbal of all the famous painters. Imagine, as a bonus, getting "the rest of the story" from the massive number of letters van Gogh wrote to his brother, Theo. This was an amazing labor to gift us who buy this book to learn what van Gogh thought about other painters who also became famous, how he painted, painting processes he engaged in, and sometimes what troubled him and how he spoke about his "episodes" to others in his circle. I felt I had secret access to van Gogh as I read his thoughts about relationships he had with other masters and his feelings about other painters in his time.
As a painter, I loved learning about van Gogh's painting technique, color choices, and thought processes. I learned first hand what van Gogh was thinking when he painted individual paintings I have seen many times, the ideas, the color combinations, the places he loved.
Even though I had read many books about van Gogh and many more that contained information about him, after reading this book, I felt I had an intimate knowledge of him, really knew him, even felt mentored by him.
You don't have to be a lover of art or artist to gain tremendous insight from this book. Anyone curious about people, interested in exploring the mind of a genius, and especially those interested in personality traits and individual psychology would find this book a treasure trove.
Book Description
This important, groundbreaking publication contains the illustrated letters between two great modern artists–Vincent van Gogh and Émile Bernard. The original letters were previously in private hands and have not been seen for approximately seventy years. Here they are published in association with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and an exhibit at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York. In addition to the letters, the book also includes paintings, photographs, and drawings by both artists, as well as works by artists of the period, such as Paul Gauguin and Jean-François Millet. These letters, written between 1887 and 1889, are among the most important and relevant sources of insight into van Gogh’s life and art. They bridge the time when van Gogh was living and working in Paris, where he painted most of his self-portraits (mainly because he was unable to afford models), to the small town of Arles, in Provence. Here he adopted new types of compositions and developed new ideas about color–all of which he describes in detail in letters to his friend and fellow painter Bernard. Only a year later, in July 1890, van Gogh died, at the age of thirty-seven. The authors have carefully placed each letter in context of relevant events and have written authoritative commentaries on the content of the letters.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing peek into van Gogh's world.......2007-09-25
Nothing makes one feel closer to Vincent van Gogh than an encounter with one of his original letters, in an exhibition or at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It's all there in the pages he never thought the whole world would see: the tidy (but never perfect) handwriting when he's feeling relaxed, the messy handwriting when he's excited or pressed for time, the words he underlines or enlarges to make a point, the lines he squeezes in the margins as afterthoughts. Even the oftentimes neglectful grammar, as if he can't be bothered to get French accent marks right and couldn't care less about punctuation rules.
This new volume accompanies an exhibition of Vincent's letters to artist friend Émile Bernard at the Pierpont Morgan Library in NYC. It brings together facsimiles of the original manuscripts, transcriptions in the original language (French), new translations into English (revised from earlier translations), and annotations for each letter. Illustrations of van Gogh's paintings mentioned in the letters, as well as relevant artworks by Bernard, are also included, as are reproductions of the sketches van Gogh slipped in the letters to give his friend an idea of what he was working on.
Van Gogh's letters to Bernard are particularly interesting because he let his guard down in ways he tended not to do with his brother Theo. Bernard was much younger, and Vincent's tone is sometimes the helpful mentor, sometimes the bossy older brother, by turns warm, enthused, cranky, or witty. The occasional salty language may surprise as Vincent often abandons decorum with Bernard--makes you wonder what kinds of conversations they shared over absinthes in Paris before Vincent went down south!
Beautifully produced and thoroughly documented, "Painted With Words" is a must for any serious van Gogh library. This volume whets the appetite for the Van Gogh Museum's projected re-publication of van Gogh's complete correspondence in 2009. "Painted With Words" follows the same methodology and format as those volumes will and was compiled by the same curator-scholars. What a fantastic addition to van Gogh scholarship the new edition of the correspondence will be.
