Heavy on Photos - Short on Information........2007-05-16
The first thing that struck me when a copy of this book arrived through my letterbox was how thin it was. This is a paper-back book measuring 9" x 6" (23cm x 15 cm) containing 92 pages. With 20 of those pages taken up with such information as; Title of the book (again), publisher's information, contents, acknowledgements, how to use the book, overview (history) of Cuba, geography, transportation, sightseeing, entertainment, index, etc, etc, there is precious little room left for the diving information - for which we purchased the book in the first place.
For much of the content we are then treated to one specific dive site per page each of which is headed with the following information; Typical depth range, Typical current condition, Expertise required, Access, Site No. After this we are treated to a short dialogue which, in many cases, fails to describe the site adequately and in some cases is exceedingly short. And the shorter the dialogue, the bigger the picture which takes up the rest of the page.
Of course the underwater pictures are all of typical Caribbean flora and fauna and the many species of available are almost all mentioned (somewhere!) in order to pad out the text.
In short, could have done much better!

Waste of time & money.......2004-12-31
I agree with NM's review. This book is a complete waste of time and money. You can get more useful information talking to your local diveshop or dive travel agent. Over a third of the book gives very general tourist information that you can get from any guide to Cuba. At the back, there are the usual pages of Carribean Fish ID and some more padding.
I expected a thorough guide to most if not all, diving sites in Cuba. I have bought other books in this series (Thailand & Belize) and have found them extremely helpful and informative. This book on Cuba is severely lacking in any useful diving information.
For example under the Cayo Largo section, the author writes "Cayo Largo has around 30 sites. 3 described below...." What about the rest? The state-owned Puerto Sol diving centers around Cuba are extremely friendly & helpful and each one has a huge board with a geograpically correct map showing all the dive sites in the surrounding area. Would it be that much effort to even photograph those maps and add them to the book?

Book Description
Award winning author, Lenor Madruga Chappell, continues to move readers with her latest book, The Next Leg of My Journey. Her first book, One Step At A Time, (McGraw Hill) a poignant autobiography of her struggle to walk again after losing her leg to cancer, was translated into six languages and embraced as the inspirational book of the 1980's. In its fourth printing, it’s still captivating readers with its message of faith and hope.
In The Next Leg of My Journey, a sequel, Lenor engages the reader with the intimate and heart wrenching details of the painful demise of her marriage, admitting that “losing her husband was worse than losing her leg.” Committed to enjoying life, no matter what it brings, this remarkable story of learning to love again is uplifting and achingly honest. If the first story is a victorious struggle to overcome cancer, then the second book focuses on the obstacles this unique woman faced trying to overcome the challenges of life alone. Forty years old, single and an amputee, fighting to rebuild her life and to secure her daughters’ futures as well as her own, this is a story of unbelievable willpower and human triumph.
Customer Reviews:
WOW! An inspiration for all!!.......2001-02-11
Lenor Chappell's story is an inspiration to not only those who live with a handicapp, but to all of us. Her story of overcoming the gamut of life's adversities and living her life to the fullest is one of the finest examples of how perseverance and a positive outlook are really the keys to living a vigorous and happy life. Written with wonderful humor and candid emotions, Lenor has not only achieved to write an entertaining and moving story, she has also succeeded in imparting her special inspiration for living to us so that we may also find it within ourselves to prevail over our own travails. A must read!

Customer Reviews:
Creative Metal Clay Jewelry Review.......2007-08-31
An excellant book that is a great resource for new users and old hands of PMC. The inspiration I personally got from the book is awesome and has sent my creativity into a high.
The book is well written and illustrated perfectly.
Excellent book to inspire you to work with this magical material........2007-01-08
CeCe Wire has a winner here, projects that will guide you from initial forays with this material through to more advanced techniques, such as ring making and sulptural pieces. A good solid Introduction on tools and equipment. The instructions combine both lovely photos and sketches which are easy to follow, even projects that are a photo of the completed piece and written instructions only are achievable. Whilst some of the finished projects may not suit all tastes ( what book does!!), it is the idea and technique that is useful, it can be adapted to a design of your own making. One of my favourites is the Twig and Leaf Condiment Spoon, I have made a set of these and the awe factor from my guests is wonderful when they are used. Nice to go outside just jewelry. I recommend three books to my Silver Clay students, this is one of them, with Sherri Haab and Tim McCreight being the other two. Well worth adding to your bookshelf.
Best for Beginners, in my humble opinion.......2006-07-20
I first borrowed this book from the library, and now I have finally been able to order it. I have used two other books on this subject, but I think CeCe Wire's book is best suited for me. I am a beginner with this material, however, I want my finished projects to have a certain streamlined sophistication, and I feel that of all of the books I have read on this subject, this book suits my needs and goals best. Ms. Wire has a wonderful grasp on the technical aspects of working with metal clay. Her projects are great for beginners, well illustrated and explained, but the final results are professional and stylish. One does not need to invest in many additional tools or materials in order to finish her projects. I also find that her projects and gallery of finished pieces provide a great springboard to encourage the reader to envision and create their own great jewelry pieces. There is a non-jewelry piece in here, but that does not bother me at all. It encourages the reader to consider other uses for metal clay, and who says jewelry must only be worn on the body? Why not create decorative objects as "jewelry" for the home? If you do not have a kiln, do not worry. I fire my pieces on my gas stove or with a small butane torch purchased from my local home improvement store. Also, I hear that bead and jewelry stores that have PMC or Art Clay Silver classes or paint-your-own-ceramics studios are often willing to fire your pieces for a reasonable fee. So give this book a try, I hope you will be as pleased as I am!
I'm not that impressed with the projects.......2005-03-09
I just received this book today and I leafed through it and put it down. Normally with a book of this type (art instruction, projects etc) I'll just get lost in it and read it from cover to cover. I bought this book based on the reviews here and also that Ms. Wire is the head cheese at the PMC Guild, but if I had seen this book first in the store I probably wouldn't have purchased it. The jewelry projects are not my style at all, and the layout and photography isn't that exciting either.
A better book about PMC is The Art of Metal Clay by Sherri Haab. I love the projects in there and the pictures are totally inspirational.
Great Clear Photos.......2004-08-31
This book has wonderful photographs that are clear enough to see the details of the jewelry and steps involved in creating them. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Not Impressed.......2007-08-11
I was looking for new and helpful information to add to my growing fascination with metalworking. This book is not for beginners. The projects are too precise for artists new to using a saw. Trying to saw a simple straight line takes lots of practice. I have some experience with the saw, but one project in this book scared the crap out of me. It's a geometric nightmare. The instructions in here are incomplete and vague. Some are a bit foolish or dangerous. For instance, there are many ways to make jump rings. This book instructs you to put your fingers directly in the path of the saw blade. There is a chemical etching project. It doesn't remind you to use gloves. The person in the pictures isn't wearing gloves. Also, there are safer ways apply a resist that doesn't include a razor sharp knife. The narrative sounds evasive to me. Example regarding the pendant on the cover, "Design eight decorative elements." I bought this book thinking that the author would show me how to make those little flowers. I liked the pinback idea, but again the instructions are vague. This book doesn't cover enough basics and it isn't safe.
GREAT book, especially for beginners...........2007-07-27
I am trying to teach myself jewelry making, and I find soldering rather intimidating, complicated, and do not really have the space to set up a properly equipped soldering station, so I bought this book.
I LOVE this book! One only needs some basic tools in order to get started. I think the projects are cool, I think they are unique and stylish, and are perfect for those who like jewelry with more of an industrial or modern edge.
Great Idea Book.......2007-07-09
As a begining metalsmith student, this book was amazing. Lots of cool ideas without the frou-frou designs of some jewelry books.
ok..........2007-07-05
i expect some good design inside... but this is a book about techniques, just like the book's name. I was wrong...
Interesting, Inspirational & Fun.......2007-02-01
Even as someone relatively new to metalsmithing, I think this book is a fabulous resource of information. But more than that, it's a wealth of inspiration for opening my mind to using metals other than just silver, and that's a beautiful thing! Instructions are clear and concise, and the photos are great! It's a terrific book for anyone's metalsmithing library, to be sure.

Customer Reviews:
Inspirational!.......2007-09-14
This is a great metal bead project book. Many of the ideas and techniques were quite inspiring. The author covers most aspects required to carry out the projects but I found the data on stringing the beads and various clasps that could be used lacking. Nonetheless a book worth purchasing.
Classy Beads & Excellent Projects - a complete winner.......2007-09-13
Somehow, I managed to miss this fabulous book. However when I finally got around to purchasing it I kicked myself that it had taken so long. With 40 projects to work your way through you will be kept busy for many weeks, and what lovely projects they are. I found new ideas that could be used in both traditional metal smithing, and could also be applied to Metal Clay.A good solid introduction if needed on the basics of metal smithing, (Sawing, filing, Soldering etc. followed by Cold Connected Beads, Transforming Commercial Beads, Beads from Tubing, Fused Beads, Hydraulic Press Beads and a myriad of other techniques.
Clearly written and beautifully photographed - I can't wait to have some play time at my bench to try out some of these designs. Thanks Pauline.
Making Metal Beads: Techniques,.......2007-06-07
Excellent book! It had great designs and easy instructions on how to create the beautiful beads. It also gives basic instructions for those unfamiliar with metal fabrication
Great Ideas and Clear Instructions.......2007-04-11
This book not only contains some really good ideas but also has excellent clear instructions that are easy to follow. The pictures are in great colour and really display minute detail. The techniques used cover a wide range from simple to complex. This book is an inspirational delight.
All You Keed to Know.......2007-03-09
A very comprehensive book on the making of beads. Having this book earlier would have saved a lot of trial and error!

Customer Reviews:
Don't bother.......2007-08-18
There are many good silversmithing books out there, this is not one of them.
For all the potential this book had it didn't live up to my expectations. Many of the pictures were of unfinished or poorly finished work, things out of round, rough edges. Fundamental bits of knowledge were left out. It seemed poorly researched and rather hastily thrown together. The tone alternates between sophomoric and pedantic.
Was this a vanity publication? There is no information about the education or background of the author.
If I had the opportunity to look through this book in a bookstore I'd never have bought it. This seems to be an example of someone who might have graduated from a university metalsmithing program and is trying to make a name for herself.
There are photos of work from well known metalsmiths which serve to redeem the book a bit...a little bit.
If you're looking for a book on silversmithing I recommend Feingold & Seitz, more expensive but worth the money.
Modern forging.......2007-05-20
This is an inspiring book and makes forging look easy. The book begins with simple pieces to gain technique, gaining complexity as one develops the skill and familiarity in working with silver. There are descriptive details accompanied with imagery for each stage of the forging process. For the novice such as myself I picked up quite a few tips and an understanding of how to begin working the silver. The designs the authors provide are modern and useable in daily life.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for school nurses.......2006-03-15
This book has some good ideas for school nurses. Some of them do not apply to a private school however. There are quite a few things that do not apply since we d not see them, but then we see things that are not listed in this book as well. Overall, a good resource.

Book Description
Woodland Reflections: The Art of Truman Lowe explores the art and influences of Truman Lowe, a sculptor whose large abstract works in wood and metal are inspired by many elements of Lowe’s world, among them river eddies, willows, waterfalls, bluffs and dunes, and the architecture of the handmade canoe. An internationally acclaimed artist whose works are displayed in major museums, Lowe grew up on the banks of Wisconsin’s Black River, where his parents were skilled makers of splint-plait baskets and other crafts from their Ho-Chunk tradition.
There are relatively few books on contemporary fine art made by Native Americans, and many of these reproduce old stereotypes. This amply illustrated book is a specific and respectful treatment of a Native artist as an artist. It examines Lowe’s work in multiple contexts, including his personal history and the social, political, intellectual, and cultural spheres in which he lives and works. The artist’s voice throughout the book is clear and constant: the text is based on extensive interviews with Truman Lowe and on the recent history of the Wisconsin Ho-Chunk. Equally important, the book relates Lowe’s art both to mainstream modernist art theory and to contemporary cultural theories of Native critics and scholars.
Customer Reviews:
An extensive philosphical commentary.......2004-06-06
Written by Jo Ortel (an associate professor of art history and recipient of the James R. Underkofler award for excellence in undergraduate teaching), Woodland Reflections: The Art Of Truman Lowe is an artbook featuring the abstract wooden sculpture and other works of native american artist Truman Lowe, whose bold and original creations set him apart. An extensive philosphical commentary ranging from reflections upon native traditions and cultural survival through art to education and identity, the distinctions between art and craft, and much more adds a thoughtful dimension to the captivating gallery of full-color photographs of Lowe's eye-catching creations. A most welcome addition to avante-garde and Native American artbook collections.
