The Old New South.......2005-01-04
I was born in Tennessee, grew up in South Carolina and lived in Georgia for five years before relocating to Ohio. I bought the Insight Guide To The New South to quell that occasional twinge of homesickness and to learn more about one of my favorite areas in the world.
It is a beautiful looking book, as are all of the Insight Guides. Fantastic full color photos and detailed maps fill the book and the editors do a reasonable job of briefing you on the history and culture of the South. The text is your standard travel guide fare -- light sometimes flowery descriptions that cover most of the must-see destinations of each state.
There are a few problems, though. The hotel and restaurant listings are so incomplete that you wonder why they even bothered to include them. That, along with the bulk of the book (388 pages) makes it more of a coffeetable book than an indisposable, or even convenient, carry-along travel guide.
Even worse, I encountered a few typos (one blurb referenced the state of "Missississippi" and one map happened to include "Cincinati") and a few gaffes (the guide tells you that North Carolina's mountains are in the eastern part of the state and referred to the Atlantic Coast Conference as the "legendary Atlantic Athletic Conference"). And while the book spends a great deal of time and effort praising the booming growth and enterprise of the "New South," it spends even more time on the old Southern standbys -- plantations, Elvis, the Civil War, and "Gone With The Wind," which is mentioned (by my count, which could be wrong) roughly 137 times. All of this, to me, shows a kind of editorial laziness which taints the entire book.
Nevertheless, I do believe this is a worthwhile pre-visit introduction to the South, for the photos alone. If you want a detailed travel companion, this may not be for you. And if you want a real feel for the South, you really just have to go. No book can give you that.

Book Description
Craig MacFarlane is undoubtedly the World's Greatest Blind Athlete. The question, as always in Craig's life: Why limit him with the word "blind"?
Inner Vision begins with Craig being blinded in an accident at age 2 1/2. It goes through his becoming a champion sprinter, internationally acclaimed wrestler, downhill skier and as a regular in the water skiing spectacular at world famous Cypress Gardens. He's shot a 91 in golf. "I've always said my playing golf blows the theory of keeping your eye on the ball," he says. Craig now makes over 200 appearances a year-everything from children in a classroom setting to 3-time speaker at the Republican National Convention.

Craig is a Tower Of Inspiration.......2004-09-12
For the last year of my life I have been wallowing in the depths of "I'm 40 years old and washed up". I was exhausted, stressed out, feeling useless and left-out/left-behind, and had given up on life. Apparently it was only I that gave up...God didn't. I met Craig only a few short weeks ago through a mutual friend and one of the first things I did was read his book. I just couldn't believe that we were the same age! Since then, we've become friends and I spend lots of time with him and his beautiful wife Patti and the children. The book is truly him and I'm encouraged to know that he's as real in person as he is in written words. It will be fascinating to watch this man over the next 40 years...if he can do so much as a young man, one can only wonder what he can accomplish as a mature man. I, for one, will be following him closely...for a blind man, he's incredible. But he has something called "Inner Vision" to share with us all and it's this inner-vision that you discover in his life story presented in the book. He's a true tower of inspiration! Read his book and you'll see! Do a search on the net too....Craig MacFarlane is a name that is known world-wide!
Craig Macfarlane; Inspirational not Motivational.......2001-12-09
There is such a huge difference between motivational and inspirational books. Craig's is truly inspirational. I have the honor of knowing Craig, and working with him on several occassions. His book is truly a great story that is also easy to read. I recommend it highly
He is amazing!.......2001-12-07
This is one of the most amazing person I know. I am in the Air Force and recently met him at a professional Military Education course on Dec. 5, 2001. He has accomplished so much and is so successful because of his personality. He gives credit to his parents for his determination and will. He is so inspirational, that it makes him one of the best motivational speakers around. His life story alone is a good reason to buy this book. One thing that you people must understand is that this guy has everything.....he is very successful with two degrees. He is world known! he could easily just sit home and relax and just spend the day with no fear..but he doesn't. He would rather travel the world and share his story and give motivational speeches because that is his way of giving back to the community...or the world. The only thing he doesn't have is his eyesight. What makes him special and I will always remember what he said to my class when asked if he would dissappointed if he ever got his eyesight restored because things would maybe not seem the way he imagined them, He said,"No, because one of the good things aboyut being blind is that you don't see race, color of someones skin, or anything of the sort. I get to know the person and only the person. I do not know racism, or prejudice. That would probably be the only thing that would disappoint me. The way people judge by the outside first...and that is not possible for me." Take those words and use them. Apply them to your everyday life. Oh and to let you know....he has hit a hole in one on the golf course. I saw it on video. He can do anything!
my uncle has a good book!.......2001-07-17
craig is my uncle and his book is extremely good! people are always criticizing him for something or another but i think you people are just jelous that he has found great success in never giving up. I have been around him my whole life and found him to be more of a father figure to me than my own dad and that means a lot to me. if you would like to hear an amazing story about the worlds greatest blind athlete read this book
The story of the blind athlete - Craig MacFarlane.......1999-10-22
Inspirational? Yes. Encouraging? Yes. Will young readers benefit from reading this book? Well, Maybe. My problem with the book, which young people will hopefully overlook, is the message that as long as you are pursuing your goals and doing what you want to do, no one else really matters. . .even your own family. In the book, Mr. MacFarlane raves and raves and dedicates many pages to his young son, "his best friend", Dalton. His daughter, who lives with Dalton's mother (Craig's x-wife), is mentioned once. I was reading the story and found it difficult to be encouraged by this man when all I could think about was: "What if that was my Dad? What if I was reading this book and hearing my Father sing my older brothers praises, and my name was mentioned once - almost customarily." Mr. MacFarlane's personal relationships are certainly not the issue here, nor are they neccessarily any of our business. As a parent however, I am concerned that a book which, will no doubt be read by many young people, is sending the message that parenthood is whatever and however you want it to be. That it's okay to have 2 children and cherish and love one, and treat the other as if they do not exsist. I came away from the book feeling that, although Mr. MacFarlane truly has a triumphant spirit and is a great athlete, he seems extremely self-absorbed, arrogant, and almost cocky. In todays society, where it's almost rare when a young father handles his responsibilities selflessly, and without question, the last thing we need is to send a message that selective parenthood is okay.

Working with Precious Metal Clay Review.......2007-08-31
Tim McCreight is the PMC guru and this book is almost a text book.
Exceptionally well laid out with the different sections, projects, techniques and tools. As a new user of PMC I have found the book to be a great guide as I work my way through the techniques of PMC.
Very well written and illustrated.
Start with this book .......2007-01-08
I confess straight up to being a McCreight fan so maybe I am biased. However I have found his book to be one of the best to give my students. It is incredibly clear and consice. It is perfect for the person starting out in silver clay. Sure the glossy photos are missing, rather hand drawn step by steps, but you can follow easily. With 50 projects, there is ample opportunity for the beginner to find something that appeals and to gain confidence with this medium. Part Two is fabulous, excellent technical tips on a host of items, rehydrating, extruding, carving, ring sizing, making bails, use of patinas, and loads more. Part Three gives you the added bonus of How to make your own tools - and therefore save a few dollars. Being spiral bound is a bonus, always stays open. I recommend three books to my clay students, this is one of them, ( the other two - CeCe Wire and Sherri Haab.)A must for your library.
Worthless.......2007-01-05
I have never been more dissappointed in a how-to book. All the instructions are drawings that look like they were done by children. There are few photos and they are mostly tiny black and white and fuzzy. This book is not helpful at all. I am sorry I purchased it and don't recommed it for any level of experience. Save your money.
This is probably the number one beginners book out there........2006-03-30
This book is of the style that McCreight has become associated with. For good or bad, Tim's books are either hated or loved. That is just the way it is. This book was published in what could be called the dark ages of the metal clay movement. It is truly a beginners book. In the sense it is for beginners and it was at the beginning of metal clay. It covers one brand of the two major players in the production of precious metal powders in a clay binder/carrier. The projects are simple, small and easy. As they should be for new people and a new medium. I can not judge the projects merit, because as with most things. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When you open it up it will lay flat on a table. The project pictures should be larger. As the PMC title is not only a descriptive generic nomenclature along with a trademark. It does cover the basics of working with the clay of both types. The tips are as always good to know. the tools are of the type that can be constructed by anybody with little handy work skills or tools. It touches the surface of a new material and what the possibilities it holds. I own it.
Very imformative.......2006-03-15
I love this book as a reference, it is written very clearly and easy to understand. Very well organized also. If you are in to PMC I would highly recommend this book.

Book Description
Every gorgeous page here blooms with visually exciting ideas for combining and designing groups of flowers and containers. You’ll see pots on walls, in borders, laid out in rows, stacked on shelves, arranged informally or dramatically. Make an improvised pot from vine prunings, intertwined and lined with moss. Fill glassware with intriguing, contrasting layers of sand, chippings, pebbles, and foliage. They’re all portable, versatile, and low-maintenance, too.

Not exactly that creative.......2007-03-10
The book got to me in time and good condition. as a product in itself though, it is a really boring book. The cover got me fooled into thinking it would be trully creative, but it wasn't. It is just your boring old book with old containers, nothing fancy.

Customer Reviews:
Focus on infant potty training .......2006-01-04
The author clearly believes you should train an infant and not use diapers. But then there isn't a clear plan for training a baby. This is kind of a mix of lots of ideas without a committment to one specific plan. Kind of confusing, not too helpful.
Good beginning Overview.......2005-11-15
I think this was a good first book for parents about to tackle potty training. While as some have posted the author does clearly think infant training is best, other methods are also clearly presented and outlined. Use this book as a starting point. It outlines a few major methods. From this you should be able to decide which method you want to use and then focus your next book purchases.
Strength in many approaches.......2005-04-25
I found this book to be infinitely helpful in toilet training my daughter. Because the author presents four different methods of potty training, she isn't obligated to advocate her method and dismiss competing methods as "wrong". Acknowledging that there are many correct ways to toilet-train a child is something that few authors have the latitude or courage to admit. This book also presents practical, non-judgemental advice regarding which method may work best in different family situations. After reading about all the approaches, I was able to fashion an approach that was consistent with my parenting style and worked well with my daugher's personality.
Keep an open mind when you read this book.......2005-04-01
I had to make a comment about those reviewers that gave this book a low rating. Dr. Sonna's approach on potty training may seem different to many, but it is very, very effective. Her so called "bias" is to train kids in a different way than what we are accustomed here in the USA. If you are buying this book it's because you are needing help in this area. Maybe her advice is the advice you don't want to hear, because you've been approaching potty training with no results, and feel you couldn't possibly be doing it wrong. Some of the people who negativiley criticize this book because it's teaching a different approach to toilet train probably would criticize their doctor for perscribing a pill that cures an illness that is causing pain, when all they wanted is a pain killer. If you ever travel abroad you quickly learn that here in the US our kids are toilet trained much later than anywhere else in the world. Her pointers, suggestions, and even, thank God, her humor really help you deal with what is really not a fun and messy issue in child rearing. Throw out your (mis)-conceptions on potty training, open your mind to a different approach, buy this book, and follow the advice. The bottom line is: IT WORKS! And isn't the whole point in buying this book to find a method the works?
not the well rounded book you would expect from the title.......2004-11-19
This book is part of the "Everything" series of books, so you would expect it to have a little bit of "everything" about potty training in it. Unfortunately, I had to read the entire book to find out that the author's clear bias towards infant potty training continues into the sections on toddler training. I was hoping for a less opinionated book, one with more general information.
Book Description
First Book Ever Published on the Early Work of Russia's MostInfluential Living Photographer Russian photographer Boris Mikhailov (b.1938) described the politicalclimate of his homeland in the late 60s and early 70s as "a period ofhidden meanings and coded messages."Inadvertently he produced a body ofwork during that time that parallels that encrypted reality--an assemblageof conflicting elements that reflect the dualism and contradictions ofSoviet society. The simple act of overlaying two slides created a scene inwhich fact and fiction could interplay, concealing an extraordinary doubleworld of soviet drudgery juxtaposed with sex and beauty. Phaidon Press is pleased to announce the publication of YESTERDAY'SSANDWICH (Hardcover, April 2007, $59.95), a unique collection of BorisMikhailov's Superimposition series, which has never before been publisheddue to artistic restrictions imposed during the Communist era.Comprisedof 52 color tableaux printed on separate unbound boards and enclosed withina specially created folder and slip case, this lush package is a unique andhighly collectible object.YESTERDAY'S SANDWICH embodies Mikhailov's roleas artist, documentary photographer, and social observer. In Mikhailov's superimposed world everything is layered and mixed up.Anaked woman swims in a lake while brown leaves cover her sensual body; aclothesline full of undergarments stretches across overgrown railroadtracks; school children play in a desolated and flooded courtyard; a womanwearing a gasmask and a woman carrying an umbrella stand side-by-side undera sunny sky.Mikhailov explains the imagery as "a work that celebratesbeauty or its absence.I started with pictures of an idyllic beauty butsubsequently created images that lapse into kitsch, or evoke the tedium andthe ugliness of life." There are a multiple entry points for interpretation in this fascinatingseries. At first, backgrounds seem to show reality, but this reality isimmediately distorted by the intrusion of an unexpected object, form, orcolor.Superimposing images introduces a different point of view--apolitical commentary, a personal fantasy, or simply a formal device.Amyriad of extraordinary worlds merge into one scene. For nearly thirty-five years this series existed only as slides, shown onlyin the form of projections as paper was expensive and difficult to find. Much later, in the late 1980s, Mikhailov, while he was in the west, madeprints from the slides. With the publication of this gorgeous edition itis now possible to own the series as a whole and to experience firsthandthe innovative vision of Russia's most influential living photographer.
Book Description
In the early 1980s, before Glasnost and Perestroika, Boris Mikhailov made this series of photographs in his home town of Charkow, in the Ukraine. Mikhailov is best known for his ruthlessly honest documentation of the problems of Soviet and Russian daily life; this work, which has never been published before, is sometimes gentler.
Book Description
The creator of radical and poetic work, Boris Mikhailov focuses his camera on people's everyday life, capturing both the social and historical conditions in the Soviet Union and the changes that occurred after 1989, with the breakdown of order in the Ukraine. In the 1970s, Mikhailov started to photograph "life the way it is." He dealt with the "city without a main street," the anti-heroic, the incidental, the private sphere and leisure time in the Soviet Union. His book Case History, a heart-wrenching monument to the forgotten losers of system change, documented the plight of the homeless in the Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The critical aspects of his photographs, provocative performances and combinations of words and images make Mikhailov a conceptual documentary artist who creates moving images of the wounded human soul--simultaneously full of humor and seriousness. This book is dedicated to Mikhailov's entire oeuvre. Essays on individual works and periods run together with a flow of images to underline his different photographic techniques and to deepen our understanding of a rich work that intentionally seems unspectacular. Created in collaboration with Fotomuseum Winterthur. Essays by Urs Stahel, Ekaterina Dyogot, Anne von der Heiden, Michael Schischkin, Inka Schube, Helen Petrovsky and Margarita Tupitsyn. Book Description
This past year Boris Mikhailov joined the ranks of William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, and Robert Frank as the recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Award, confirming the international stature and critical acclaim he has earned in the last few years with one-person exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, London's Photographer's Gallery, and the DAAD Gallery in Berlin as well as representation in major international surveys such as the Carnegie International. His first book, "Unfinished Dissertation", was published by Scalo in 1997, on the occasion of his receipt of the Albert Renger-Patzsch Prize; in 2000, he published his second book with Scalo, "Case History", and was awarded the photo book award of the International Festival for Photography in Arles, France. Mikhailov also recently accepted an invitation to teach at Harvard University beginning in the fall of 2000. This new book contains a never-before published series of work from the early 1980s: Mikhailov photographed ''The Dancers'' in his hometown in the Ukraine during a period when the former Soviet Union was a reality, before the appearance of Gorbachov and "perestroika". We observe the open-air dancing scene with great astonishment; seeing older and younger people enjoy themselves in a way that might be contradictory to the images we might have about everyday life in the old Soviet Union. These cheerful images remind us how little women and men need to have a good time. An essay by Russian art critic Boris Groys and an exhaustive interview make this volume a must have for readers and libraries interested in contemporary art and photography. Hardcover, 144 pages, 9 x 10 inches, 65 duotone illustrations.
Book Description
In the southern Ukrainian town where Boris Mikhailov's father was born, a factory spills untreated water directly out into the open sea. Believing these waters to have healing powers, the local people enjoy swimming in it. All year round, families gather on the shore; on-lookers might be reminded of a Russian Baden-Baden. Mikhailov shot the filmic, black and white sequence of Salt Lake in 1986, capturing a Russian bohemia of uncanny, eery proportions and muted light. Scene upon strangely timeless scene sees rough, stocky men and thick, bikini-clad women, their hair tied up in scarves, all bathing naturally on a sea shore crowded with smokestacks, brick warehouses, and industrial-size pipes that lead right out into the water, like a dock. The book itself was designed by the artist using Russian paper and binding materials, and is printed in a limited edition.

He captures the unadorned and the natural; in pictures devoid of aesthetic exhaltation, he concentrates on people and their living conditions. On his journeys through Russia, Germany, and his Ukrainian homeland, Mikhailov has equally observed the poor, the well-to-do, the outcasts, and the homeless. Look at Me, I Look at Water was composed in 1999 at the suggestion of the Heiner Mller-Society when Boris Mikhailov's name was found in one of Heiner Mller's notebooks. With this book Mikhailov is continuing, thematically and conceptionally, what he began with his artist's book Unfinished Dissertation in 1985. The photographs are accompanied by handwritten Russian commentaries, which together give the impression of a private album which narrates stories from a chapter in the artist's life.
Customer Reviews:
How wealthy we are in the Western World........2000-07-17
First thing is first. Book is in colour. Did I not read that? Do not know, was expecting B&W. Second, 400 pages of which I believe 50+ were provactive and made me think. Provactivity was why I bought the book, and why I suspect others did/will too. Wanted to be woken up from my slumber: to know what it is really like over there. But 50/400 pages is not a high ratio, hence my 3 stars. (To be honest, some of the photos I felt I could've taken myself.) Notwithstanding this, there were some shots that demanded a reality check. How wealthy we are in the Western World...
Not for everyone, and certainly not for me........2000-05-28
For me, the only thing this book proves is that in the post-Soviet Ukraine, the homeless can be subjected to exploitation and forced loss of dignity for a small sum of money. The degrading conditions of the people could be shown without having the photographer subject the people to further degradation. By the way, this was the most poorly bound book that I have ever received. Upon the first (and last) reading, groups of 10-20 pages were coming out in handfuls. Not a problem - I threw it away.
Not for everyone!.......2000-05-23
The photos in this book are provocative and thoughtful - but definitely not for everyone. Case History is 400+ pages of Ukraine's poor and homeless - most in various stages of undress. Mikhailov comes through and does an excellent job of depicting certain aspects of the downfall of the Soviet Union - his photos are thoughtful and emotional - but often disturbing. View his other works before spending the money. Not for the weak of stomach!

Book Description
Description: Emergencies collects work relating to Alfredo Jaar's Emergency, or to its call for attention to the developing world. From Tony Oursler's Boot to Anri Sala's Dammi i Colori, the works presented here were gathered together for the inaugural exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporneo de Castilla y Le*n, which opened in Le*n, Spain, in 2005. MUSAC's agenda, above and beyond collecting contemporary art, is the establishment of a dialogue with the public about everyday events that affect and threaten human sensibility. Emergencies documents that collecting, and is also a platform for the expression of the artists' and the museum's utopian hopes, as well as a stage for the fight between injustice and artists' dreams. To that end, each section of this dense, well-designed volume lists further reading on the artistic and political topics covered--government, nonprofit and reference addresses to turn to for more information in addition to web sites of interest.

Book Description
This is the first book-length study of Boris Eikhenbaum (1886-1959), a leading Russian Formalist and a pathbreaking Tolstoy scholar. The author traces Eikhenbaum's intellectual trajectory from his pre-Formalist "philosophical" criticism, through Formalism, to his later biographical criticism of Tolstoy and Lermontov. Illus.
