1 out of 5 stars Facts Not Straight.......2003-10-17

I will only say that if the author of a book about a country (or countries) demonstrates in the "Facts" section not having even looked at a map of the region, showing complete lack of knowledge of the most basic geography of what s/he claims to know and write about, what reliability can you expect from such a book?

I'll give you three examples from the "Facts on Argentina" section that reveal lack of knowledge of the region's geography and geopolitics.

        1. It says: "In most of Argentina and the other Rio de la Plata countries (Uruguay and Paraguay)...". This is the grosser mistake because Paraguay is nowhere near! the Rio de la Plata river. And that is easy to see in a map of the area this book writes about. Also from a cultural perspective, this is a gross mistake. Only Uruguay and Argentina are (and always have been) known as "the Rio de la Plata river countries". There is even a culture common to both margins of the Rio de la Plata (River Plate in English). This "rioplatense" culture (from "Rio" and "Plata") is not even shared by all of huge Argentina that is a lot more than just the region around this river that divides it from smaller Uruguay.

        2. It says that Spaniard "Solís probed the area now known as Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay". But the region occupied by what today are those three countries is VERY big--and one could not say more than Solís probed the region around the Rio de la Plata river, which covers only a small section of today's Uruguay and Argentina (and not Paraguay).

        3. It says that "Solís died at the hands of Uruguayan tribes". This sounds almost as a joke if not an insult. Uruguayans did not exist in Solís's times. The author might mean "the tribes *then* inhabiting *today's* Uruguay". Those tribes were not Uruguayan, just as the Apaches were not American (nationals of the U.S.).

I leave the conclusions up to you. I'm sure *some* facts must be right in this book, but such a lack of professionalism revealed in the absense of the most basic review of the facts of a book edited by a large, well knwon publisher does not inspire the least trust in me. I rather not waste my money: I am willing to pay for information--not for mis*information.

        5 out of 5 stars A step up, rather.......2003-07-19

The first 'reviewer' has it wrong--this edition of Lonely Planet's Argentina book is a remarkable improvement over the 3rd edition, which at times is convolutedly wordy beyond belief. The review sounds like it was written by the previous author. Be aware that some competetive guidebooks, such as those put out by Avalon (or Moon) pay their authors based on the royalty system. In other words, on how many books they sell. Avalon may be putting out their own Argentina guide soon. Your best advice: run through the books at a bookstore and decide for yourself which fits your needs best.

        2 out of 5 stars A step backward.......2003-04-21

Except for most of the Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego chapters, which show evidence of capable research and writing, this is a step backward from the previous edition. The coverage of northwestern Argentina is superficial and even naive, and the coverage of Iguazu falls missed the enormous changes that resulted from privatization of national park services over the past few years. It looks as if only one, perhaps two, of the five authors was really up to the job.

4 out of 5 stars Fills more of the void than the others.......2003-03-10

I used the guide in February 2003 to complete a trip in Argentina. The Lonely Planet guide was the best that I found, but none were up to par. I had Rough Guide to Argentina with me as well, and found it superior for the descriptions of points of interest. Lonely Planet, however, provided adequate descriptions and added travel information (75% correct) and local maps from time to time. Particularly unreliable were prices (of course, with the economic situation) and flight information. Pricing in any of the Arg. guides published for early 2003 is only good for comparison between like opportunities. Flights tended to be offered on different days or had been cancelled since publishing. The only notable information flaw I remember was in the El Bolson description, where they placed the cervezeria and associated campground on the opposite side of town. Everyone I met travelling to Uruguay or Paraguay had the Shoestring Guide to S.A. rather than this specialty guide, so I have no information on those sections of the book. All in all, the L.P. guide provided the best overall information, and I wouldn't have had as much time to enjoy my trip without it.

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.

Here is the independent traveler's quintessential guide to Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). The author offers tried-and-true advice on the best places to eat and sleep for every budget; more than 135 maps to cities, provinces, beaches, and parks; a useful Spanish language section; historical, cultural and political notes; the lowdown on a wide range of outdoor activities; transportation options; and features on national parks, wildlife, and ecological concerns. --Kathryn True

3 out of 5 stars the best is yet to come.......2001-09-14

It's true, this book is not the best LP has to offer, with somewhat pedantic, bone-dry descriptions and overly-detailed town histories your average traveler could care less about. It still offers your basic traveler's information, though, and you won't miss much with this complete tome in your hot little hands.
A promise, however: the next edition will arrive spicier and cutting-edge fresh, with beefed up entertainment sections and wittier town introductions to boot. It will also be more fun to read (same goes for the Buenos Aires guide). I personally guarantee it.

1 out of 5 stars so where is buenos aires????.......2001-03-20

LP guides are usually complete and thorough. so why is the section on buenos aires in this one so carelesly researched? is it because LP wants us to buy their book on buenos aires or because their researchers didn't visit the city at all? i've been to buenos aires countless times. reading the LP guide, one would think that it is just a hamlet not worth wasting your time on. buenos aires is one of the most exciting and mysterious places in the world; a european outpost in south america, full of chic decadence and a lot more than just beef and tango. entire districts are overlooked by the guide, descriptions are misleading or incomplete and uninviting at best. one wonders why. if you're looking for a guide to buenos aires, buy yourself a plane ticket and a map. once in the city, meet the locals. this is one city you need to explore and understand rather than just see. as jorge luis borges once said: ''it would seem that buenos aires has existed forever.''

4 out of 5 stars Very informative for non-Buenos Aires destinations.......2000-08-04

Used this guide for all three countries - Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. The information for the latter two countries was the most detailed and reliable (maybe because things don't change there as fast as they do in B.A.). It was especially good for hotels/restaurants in Montevideo; the region around Igauzu Falls (including Foz de Iguacu and Ciudad del Este); and Bariloche. Travellers going exclusively to Buenos Aires might want to get a more cosmopolitan book (it is impossible to distinguish good hotels from bad, good cultural events, etc. using this book). The whole lonelyplanet shoestring/adventure "feel" doesn't mesh well with a city as culturally rich & refined as Buenos Aires.

2 out of 5 stars LP Guide Slights Buenos Aires.......2000-03-18

Though I had this book when I visited Buenos Aires, I found it utterly useless. I stayed with a group of friends who are natives of this incredible city and so I was able to rely on their information about cool neighborhoods and off-beat places. Though LP prides itself on offering this kind of information, this edition has little that allows travelers to discover the city's uniqueness. Instead, I used this guide to find museums and other basic info that I could have gleaned from ANY guide. It's hard to believe that LP included hardly any information about Palermo, one of the city's most charming neighborhoods, or failed to mention the tradition of Milongas, which are "local" dances in venues such as community centers where everyday Portenos dance the tango with more grace and passion than you will find in the expensive, touristy shows. It's rather disappointing considering that the LP published an entire city guide on this capital.

3 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Argentina Uruguay & Paraguay (2nd Ed.).......1999-12-17

This guide badly needs updating! I found that a lot of addresses for museums and tourist information have changed (I visited Argentina in October-December 1999). Though the included local maps are usually very good and easy to read a first stop should always be the tourist office (ask locals for present address) for more up to date information. Background information on history is excellent. Generally I found the guide very helpful but it lacks enthusiasm for this beautiful country and does not really entice one to go. More descriptions about the essential character of individual towns would help.

5 out of 5 stars If you want the rewards, you need the license.......2003-10-30

Many industries have licensing, and the securites industry is no exception.

Assuming that you work for a firm that wants you to move up to managing a piece of the business, or taking responsibility for others, you will need to pass the "Series 24 Exam."

Two ways to get it. Take a crash course that is priced close to $1,000 or "hit the books."

If you really take the time to throughly read this book, and honestly take the quizzes + exams (paper + CD) and then take the time to review your mistakes and then in a highly interactive multi week process retake the exams and CD based tests until you hit scores in the 80's (as the book suggests)......you will pass the Series 24 Exam.

On that basis is the book not just good, but absolutely excellent. Actually I would rate it as 100% excellent and appropriate for the intended task.

The book clearly lays out what you need to know to both learn what a Series 24 is and what it takes to pass the exam.

But I will warn you. If you think that like the Microsoft MCSE computer geek exams, you can crash through this without some "hands on" and or some prior real world experience and still pass, then you are wrong. You will need some additional understanding and experience in the Securites industry to get through this book and later the exam.

One last item....unless you are starting up your own firm and all of your firm's paperwork (roughly 4 inches of it in the typical startup) has been initially submitted to your state, the feds and the "Self regulatory organization" that your firm is planning to join, you MUST absolutely need to be sponsored by the firm that you work for now (that is the law) in order to register and then to be approved and then to be permitted to take the exam. So make absolutely sure that you have completed the necessry industry registration forms and that you and your employer has signed them and then you or your employing firm have enclosed the exam fee (who pays is sometimes negotiable in the context of your position) and upon submission of that registration form then order this book.

At that point, you will have roughly 60 days to finish studying and to take and pass the exam.

This book is excellent for that intense 60 day task, but like any other educational undertaking, you have to put the time in with it to get the most out of it.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for a first insight in banks' financial analysis.......2004-09-24

I bought this book 3 years ago, when I started by PhD. At that time I knew nothing about banks' financial statements analysis and the book consequently become as it says a "Guide", in my early steps in the topic. I still go back from time to time to re-read some issues. Thus, I would recommend the book to those interesting in getting a first insight into banks' financial analysis. They will find the first 14 chapters quite useful. Chapters 15-27 examine other issues, such as the environment, distressed banks in Asia, the rating industry among others. How useful the later can be highly depends on what the reader is looking for.

              3 out of 5 stars BEWARE.......2004-06-25

The content of the Bank Credit Analysis Handbook is actually quite good. However, it is glaringly apparent that NO ONE proofread the manuscript. There are errors on almost every other page: missing punctuation (incuding periods), the same phrase back-to-back, incorrect formulas, formulas described one way, and then shown in a way nowhere close to the description. I have an MBA, and have read my share of textbooks and manuals, and I have NEVER come across one as sloppily edited as this one.

The content of the book is good, but at $105 one would think someone would have proofread the manuscript before it was published.

              5 out of 5 stars A Creditable Analysis.......2001-10-29

Mr. Golin has written an easily readable and comprehensive guide to an obscure subject. He assumes only a general knowledge of finance and takes the user step-by-step through the analysis of a bank's financial statements, an approach that probably makes this book as useful to equity analysts as it should be to credit analysts of financial institutions. He has a rare perspective, that of an american lawyer (from Harvard Law School) who has grappled with investment analysis of corporations in south east Asia. As a result, many of the examples in the long section on distressed banks are drawn from the Asian economic crisis. Nevertheless the scope of the work is global. He deals with the continuing development of world-wide bank regulation and the role and function of rating agencies. Last, but not least, the appendices contain useful definitions and a good bibliography. For analysts of finanical institutions his book should be a 'strong buy'.

                3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2006-08-07

This book consists of reprints of articles from Model Railroader Magazine. The articles cover a wide range of topics, all covered by the title, and some of them are very good, some are inane and most are somewhere in the middle. For a person always looking for new ideas, this is a worthwhile investment. Mostly, though, the information on track can be picked up more easily in books specifically dedicated to trackwork and the information on the details would be better in a book on that subject. Still, it has a few winners.

4 out of 5 stars Very Advanced Refrence .. Not for the Novice!.......2006-03-19

The only downside of this book is that it for an advanced model railroader, be aware any novice railroaders this may be a little over you head, good insparation for a begginer though.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Detail!!!.......2005-01-08

This is definitely for the modeler who wants to take their hobby to the next level. The first half of the book covers how to lay track with tons of tricks and tips from a seasoned modeler. It walks you through all the steps from roadbed to ballast to weathering. Lots of drawings, color sketches and photos. I would never have dreamed of attempting to lay my own turnouts but this books give you so much details, I actually think I can do it with great success! The second have is just as good. Each details has photos of real prototypes, history and explanation, sketches with enough detail to scratch build all of them, even material recommendations. Truly a must have!

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2002-01-08

Definitely worth the money. This book has lots of the little details (and not-so-little, such as the basics of hand-laying track) that make your layout really shine.

5 out of 5 stars More information than I'll probably ever use.......2001-02-01

This book offers some excellent tips for all, from the beginner (like myself) to the intermediate-going-on-advanced modeler. Especially useful for me were the sections on laying flextrack, ballasting, weathering rails and improving performance of turnouts and switches. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to thoroughly study the subject before they begin to tackle a detailed layout.

                  Book Description

For almost forty years, How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby has been the standard reference for couples trying to increase their chances of having the son or daughter they hope for. In this new edition of their classic book, Dr. Shettles and David Rorvik provide authoritative scientific studies and compelling anecdotal evidence demonstrating that the Shettles method continues to produce results unmatched by any other method. Dozens of testimonials confirm its ease of use and rate of success.

How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby explains the simple, at-home, noninvasive Shettles method and presents detailed steps to take to conceive a child of a specific gender. The properly applied Shettles method gives couples a 75 percent or better chance of having a child of the desired sex. Some researchers have reported success rates of up to 90 percent!

5 out of 5 stars Worked for us.......2007-10-12

This particular sex selection method has worked for us three times. I was monitoring very carefully for ovulation each time. That is the key. We read the whole book before trying to concieve the first time. We both work in the medical field and the suggestions by Dr. Shettles made sense to us from a physiological perspective. We tried for a boy first just to see if it worked. Not only was I pregnant the first month, it was a boy. So we tried for a girl next. Same thing. Our third time we tried for a boy and got pregnant the first month with a boy. We want one more child and are hoping for a girl. We'll see. The bottom line with any sex selection method is that it has to make sense to you and you have to be willing to follow it closely, but most importantly be thankful when you have a child regardless of the gender. Any "natural" sex selection method only works about 80% of the time even when closely followed.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.......2007-08-06

The book is very easy to understand and I enjoy reading it. The down side of it is that it is very small and most of the things that are in the book are obtainable from the internet. The vaginal mucus is somehow confusing. However, I hope the book will help me to have more chances of conceiving a boy next year (2008) after June. I also bought another book called Guarantee the Sex of Your Baby: Choose a Girl or Boy Using Today's 99.9% Accurate Sex Selection Techniques by Robin Elise Weiss. I will compare it with Dr. Shettles book.

3 out of 5 stars Repetative and useless information.......2007-05-16

I gave this book 3 stars because some of the information was indeed valuable. But the first 100 pages were completely irrelevant. Its called how to choose the sex of your baby yet he speaks of what aristotle thought. Who cares? History is wonderful and all but is it worth 100 pages?

The repetition comes in the chapters where it talks specifically how to try for a boy or a girl. It tells you to read both chapters no matter what you are trying for but repeats the same thing. Out of the 230 pages, i have a page and a half of notes. I recommend you borrow a copy of this from the library. It honestly isnt worth adorning your shelves with.

5 out of 5 stars Sex of Your Baby.......2007-05-13

We'll see if this works. I have a few friends who have used this method and been successful. It sounds logical to me so I'll find out soon if it worked for us.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful and beware.......2007-02-17

Such a book is naturally biased toward favor of the technique. But readers should look up "Shettles Method" on the web and read up on more critical evaluations. For example, "...adherence to these methods may decrease your chances of conception, without improving the odds of having a child of the gender of your choice. Note that caffeine has been linked to miscarriage, and douching has been linked to tubal damage and infertility." and "...in the New England Journal of Medicine, that has shown that 'for practical purposes, the timing of sexual intercourse in relation to ovulation has no influence on the sex of the baby.'"

You can also find out the details of the method (such as a simple chart) before investing in the book.

On our very first month of actually trying with this method it actually paid off. We have one of each and I am very pleased with that! This book is worth the read.

If you want a description and a history lesson go ahead and buy this book, but if you want something that is actually useful, buy Taking Charge of Your Fertility, 10th Anniversary Edition: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health

2 out of 5 stars Too much "Clinical" or "Medical" Terminology.......2007-05-31

This book is hard to follow and moves along very slowly before "eventually" getting to the point. Has alot of complex medical terminology and you have to follow along as if you went through 8 years of Medical School before you get to the basic information.

Don't recommend for those trying to weed out all the clinical "jargon" and eager to get right down to it.

After reading and thoroughly enjoying this book, we followed the instructions to the letter - and we got what we wanted! Just not in the order we had planned. But it was not the fault of the book's instructions, we got too anxious and tried one day too late for our boy, and got a girl. The 2nd time around, we really followed the rules more carefully, and got the boy we were planning, which is really much harder than getting a girl. I'm convinced the book works, if you follow the instructions. Enjoy! Happy baby-making!

5 out of 5 stars It Worked For Us Twice!!.......2003-06-25

I was recommended this book by a nurse friend of mine who tried Dr. Shettles method three times without success. Dr. Whelan explains why her method is the one appropriate for couples who are trying to conceive naturally. Methods written about in other books (namely by Dr. Shettles) were created for couples that conceived by artificial methods.

Dr. Whelan goes on to explain that no method is 100% gauranteed, but gives the percentages of your chances to conceive a child of the sex that you desire.

Her method is not difficult to follow, if you are familiar with your body and monthly cycle. I never did buy a fertility thermometer or any other tool.

She also goes into the ethics surrounding this issue, and encourages the reader to consider why it is that they desire a child of one sex over the other.

I highly recommend this book be read by ANYONE considering using ANY METHOD of sex selection, just so that you know both sides of this scientific story. My husband and I followed Dr. Whelan's advice, and I am excited to have conceived a son, and then a daughter which is what we desired to do!

Good Luck, have fun regardless of what method you decide to try, and don't forget what a precious child you will receive at the end of the journey- even if it isn't the sex you were hoping for!

Although out of print, this book's theory really works. After 3 girls and tons of research I found the authors method to be the most logical, and scientifically based. Boy oh Boy! 9 months later our 9 pound boy. I recommended it to a friend who choose Dr. Shetles method instead and got the opposite of what she wanted. She should have listened to Dr. Whelan.

I found this book to be very useful and informative. It was fun to read all the different theories on having a boy or girl. We did try one of the methods suggested for having a girl and it worked.

1 out of 5 stars Boy or Girl?.......2000-07-30

This book did nothing but confuse me. The author spent so much time talking about all the "usless" theories that when she started describing the method she belived to be true, it contradicted everything else I've read and heard and I had no idea whether she was going to disprove her own theory. This book is a waste of time.

                              Book Description

Over the course of his 14-year artistic career, Peter Heisterkamp, aka Peter Schwarze, aka Blinky Palermo, tirelessly probed the limits of abstract painting. Having begun his brushwork on more traditional surfaces, he shifted his activity to less conventional supports, experimenting with diverse materials and forms, exploring the relationships that can exist between the wall and the space delimited by the painting. This monograph presents a selection of Palermo's paintings, drawings and engravings, and includes examples taken from the mural he created between 1963 and 1977, the year of his death, and from his installations, among them one he did for the 1976 Venice Biennale, soon to be reconstructed for the accompanying exhibition.

                                  Book Description

Blinky Palermo began his last work, To the People of New York City, in 1976 in his studio in D sseldorf, completing it in January 1977, shortly before he left for the Maldive Islands, where he died. It is composed of 15 parts configured from 40 aluminum panels with acrylic in bars and blocks of cadmium yellow, cadmium red and black. A sketchbook documents the development of the panels' composition. Since this artwork is dedicated to the people of New York City and very few publications on the artist exist in English, this volume provides a key representation of the artist's work. This final artwork, in particular, has never before been published in English. Accompanying texts examine the relationship of Palermo's work to his generation of German and American artists and provide a critical, art historical context in which to consider his oeuvre. To the People of New York City is on permanent display at the Dia Foundation's site in Beacon, New York.

I was pleasantly surprised, recently, by Helen Castor's "Blood and Roses". I had expected another urbane, boring, and dusty history for England's most turbulent civil war- the War of the Roses. Instead, Castor presents a 15th century English family's struggle for peerage, identity, and future during England's most tumultuous pre Commonwealth period.

This remarkable 426-page 2006 paperback is destined to become a War of the Roses classic. The story is well documented (with 23 pages of endnotes, an extensive select bibliography, and a dozen photos). Clearly saying that their papers have a "unique place in the history of medieval England", Castor narrates from the Paston family's letters, their realty and legal contracts, and other original documents.

In 1400, the lowborn Paston family begins to struggle for land ownership, for money, for gentry status, and for political presence. Their rise is plagued with other families' jealousies, aristocratic theft, familial betrayal, and royal expectation, all during various would-be governments' dash to power. Through the years the Pastons play on every side. By the middle 1700s the family has achieved viscount status, castles, manor houses, and positions in the king's personal staff. Theirs is a dramatic tale worthy of history's notice and analysis.

The Paston narrative seems a microcosm for the turbulent times in which they lived, worked, plotted, loved, fought, and died. What finally happens with the Pastons? Read "Blood and Roses" and find out.

Even though it seems long at first glance, I read Castor in a short time. Her novel-like writing style kept me in the story. I couldn't put it down! This book is a must read for York versus Lancaster buffs, medieval English history enthusiasts, and Middle Ages genealogists. Get your copy soon.

4 out of 5 stars Real Estate- A Perilous Career in 15th Century England.......2007-02-09

This is a highly unusual book. I believe this is the sort of material that's usually buried in PhD theses and never reaches a general audience.

Castor's exhaustive research shows as she reconstructs the history of the Paston family and it's attempts to climb the social ladder of the landed gentry. In 15th century England, there is no title insurance. You can lose your land to claims of better connected people who may be the progeny of previous owners, or may be just better connected. You can also lose it in a seige and hope that your connections are good enough to have a hearing in a court where you hope to get connected people on your side. You can also lose this property, and be imprisoned as well, if an ancestor of yours was "unfree" and therefore not able to own property.

The Paston Family seems ill equipped to play this game. While the book does not deal with domestic problems, there are some unmistakable facts. William's other sons, who have better and firmer inheritances are in deep background (until one comes around to lay claim) leaving John, the semi-disinherited older son, to fend for himself. He's in this situation because his mother renounced his father's written will in favor of an alleged death bed testimony. This testimony works to the favor of the younger sons which essentially sets John up for failure. This is a mother who beats a daughter, whom she keeps in spinsterhood (withheld dowry), such that her head cracks.

John's wife Margaret raises children and runs the contested manor, which becomes a war zone (she actually fights skirmishs and battles) while her husband networks in London. There is little detail what he does with his time, and he must have a lot of it on his hands. No wonder Margaret becomes cranky in the end. Unfortunately she takes it out on her two sons, both of whom, also set up for failure by parental decisions, risk their lives for this family enterprise.

The tale is interesting for what it reveals of life at this time, but it is overly long in detail. Descriptions of battles, tangential players and some quotes from letters (some so convoluted they produce more confusion than enhancement) could well be eliminated in favor of a smoother analytical treatement. It isn't until p. 200+ that the author reveals what you seem to think, (but wonder if you've missed) that these people might be creating their own problems.

Also hard to understand is the true fiscal plight of the family. They are always in financial straights, but are ordering clothing (lots of detail on items the modern reader cannot identify), shopping, entertaining and hiring soldiers and servants. They seem to be not only living beyond their means, but reaching it well beyond it as well.

I like that the author describes the provenence of the letters at the end, and not the beginning. This is the time the reader can really appreciate their value.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but sometimes complicated story of landownership in early modern England.......2006-10-27

I enjoyed this book very much. It is specifically about the family's history during the period of the War of the Roses, and this time really comes alive with all of its uncertainties and political instability. The book occasionaly gets mired in extensive detail about the property problems faced by the family - but certainly shows how much has changed in terms of security of land tenure and property rights since this period. It probably helps to have some initial knowledge of Plantagenet vs. York issues to get into the book, but as a layman myself, I was able to follow the bigger story, of deposed kings and usurpers fairly easily, and was thoroughly engrossed as well in the personality profiles of the kings, princes, peers, and queens depicted.

5 out of 5 stars Wheel of fortune.......2006-05-22

Now I understand the Mediaeval belief in a wheel of fortune. This book really does portray middle class life in the fifteenth century with a realism rarely encountered. It is not easy reading but there is plenty of meat! I had never really understood before how the ups & downs of the nobility during a tumultous period affected the ordinary middle class. Now it is much clearer. One mystery remained for me. How could a son who apparently spent most of his life in the law courts suddenly be asked to join Edward 1V in a jousting tournament at Eltham? I can not imagine many of our current lawyers accepting such a challenge. An excellent book.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely engrossing........2006-05-15

I can't praise this book too highly. On one level, it is the story of a tumultuous period in late mediaeval (15th century)England (The Wars of the Roses). On another level, it is the detailed story of the rise of the Paston family from a bondsman farmer (tied to the land) to gentry who could marry into the aristocracy. The interplay of these two brings alive the former. Along the way, Helen Castor tells the more circumscribed story with numerous asides explaining the significance of things we would find difficult to relate to today (e.g., the vaguaries of legal rights to land, or the severe economic consequences of selling a forest to pay debt), but which were so important at the time.

If you have any interest in history at all (particularly English late mediaeval, though not, by any means, restricted to that) do read this book. Helen Castor writes beautifully and brings the period alive.

This is anything but "dry-as-dust" history - it will carry you along like the best of Dumas, even though it is non-fiction. Brava Helen; I can't wait for the next.

                                                Book Description

Within three generations (1426 to 1485), and through the dark and dangerous years of the Wars of the Roses, the Pastons established themselves as a family of consequence, both in their native Norfolk and within court circles. Ambitious and highly mobile - womenfolk as well as men -they kept in touch by correspondence, usually but not invariably through the medium of a clerk. These letters, a rare survival, break upon us across the centuries with the urgency, and sometimes the violence,of their preoccupations: defending property, fighting court cases, making the right alliances, and, on the domestic side, managing their estates, conducting their courtships, stocking their cupboards. Selected and presented here with Richard Barber's invaluable linking narrative, they bring the middle ages triumphantly to life.

5 out of 5 stars Unmatched by any history book.......2001-07-17

Unmatched by any history book, these letters constitute a rich and intimate glimpse into the 15th century.

Spanning several generations of the redoubtable Paston family, they are a unique record of their rise to eminence in their native Norfolk, and of the life during the upheavels of the civil wars between Yorkists and Lancastrians.
