Book Description
Hundreds of buildings, thousands of people, countless stories--there's always more to learn about Penn State, no matter how much time you've spent there. This Is Penn State: An Insider's Guide to the University Park Campus will enlighten anyone with an interest in the University, from visiting parents to lifelong State College residents.
This Is Penn State documents the rich history beneath the surface of the Penn State experience, offering facts and figures, essays and anecdotes, obscure trivia, notable quotations, and a wealth of other information about Penn State's past, present, and future. Forty of the University's most prominent buildings and areas are highlighted, accompanied by more than 120 illustrations, ranging from historical photographs to architectural sketches of buildings not yet completed. Essays by veteran Penn Staters Leon Stout, Craig Zabel, and Gabriel Welsch cover Penn State's history, architecture, and changing physical landscape. And when you want to get outside and see the campus firsthand, This Is Penn State is your guidebook to University Park. The four detailed maps take you on a west-to-east walking tour of Penn State's buildings, allowing you to understand the development of each area of campus.
Over the last 150 years, Penn State has been devoted to scholarship, research, and community service. In honor of the University's sesquicentennial and in celebration of the Press's fiftieth anniversary, the Penn State Press is proud to offer This Is Penn State as its gift to everyone who feels a connection with "dear old State."

Book Description
In this first collection of short fiction, renowned Native American writer W. S. Penn reveals a writing life that has been both difficult and fortunate. Penn has moved away from conventional narrative methods, through what his own oral tradition encompasses, to arrive at telling stories as they must be told as opposed to the ways they might be told. In This Is The World, Penn moves through spaces, encounters characters, and confronts humanity with a sage's omnipotence, yet at the same time with an unassuming voice, devoid of pretentiousness. His words are unflinching, but also unselfconscious. Although sometimes sad, This Is The World describes the tensions and problems that arise between the subtle clashes of culture and gender with a good deal of humor, both background and foreground, which makes this collection essential to those who love the craft of storytelling itself.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, Versatile Collection.......2001-10-25
I have been a fan of William Penn's works for many years and remain astounded by the depth and breadth and versatility of his writing. This collection features some of his older stories and some of the newer ones, and they are very different. Stories such as This is the World, Tarantulas, Rosa, So Much Water Underground, Storm Watch, Grab Hold, and Talking Turkey, Not Goose which are among the wonderful stories in this book, are so different in styles that you might think they come from several different writers. The one thing that is universal in these stories is the eloquence and precision of Penn's writing, which is nothing short of craft. You can see that each of these stories is chock full, a labor of love, and though the subject matter is broad, and some have disturbing or unsettling themes, there is a common feel to them, perhaps derived from the obvious care taken to have each work be as good for us as it can possibly be... a quality missing from most written work on the market today. The stories also, even in the darker moments, seem to offer a sense of hope, and celebration of the positive in this world, but in a refreshing way, with a sense of realism, not sap or sentimentality. The stories are entertaining, imaginative and well worth reading.

The first comprehensive treatment of Comstock society to incorporate mining history with the stories of the people who lived it.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent history of Virginia City.......2006-01-15
I am a resident of Nevada and read a lot of history. Recently I have read a lot of books on Nevada history, and I must say this is one of the best. Thoroughly researched and footnoted, it covers almost every aspect of Virginia City history, yet is eminently readable. Some history books are too dry and dusty, and you have to plow through them (or give up), but Mr. James' book holds your interest from beginning to end. If you are interested in the history of VC, this is the one to buy!
THE must read book on the history of the Comstock.......2000-10-18
Mr. James cuts through all of the legends that have grown up around Virginia City and its fabled Comstock Lode to give us a truly outstanding and eminently readable history. He draws together primary and secondary sources, demographic analysis and archaeology to give the reader a broad, yet surprisingly detailed understanding of the Comstock from its humble beginnings, through bonanza and borrasca, and right up to the present day. Highly recommended!!
Of very good historical value.......1999-05-17
Thoroughly enjoyed reading each chapter of Mr.James' book. I would suggest it for anyone having an interest in the old West, the mining periods, and personnae of the same, and perhaps just as importantly to gain some insightful information behind the storefornt facades and adits of Virginia City. The author has provided much background behind the legends, pulled down to earth other "legends" and truly given this "tourist site" it's legitmate and historical due. I am anxious to visit the Lake Tahoe area once again and take that little jaunt over the hill to visit a now-less-mysterious Virginia City.

Understanding and using the innate music we are born with........2001-07-01
THE ROAR OF SILENCE : Healing Powers of Breath, Tone & Music. By Don G. Campbell. 134 pp. Wheaton, Ill.: The Theosophical Publishing House, 1994 (1989).
The human voice is an amazing and beautiful instrument and all of us have one. Sadly most of us are totally unaware of the power and beauty of our own God-given voice. Campbell's book remedies that ignorance. Among other things, it gives us detailed and precise instructions for toning - "the singing of prolonged sounds, usually simple vowels, on a single note" - which anyone can follow, and it takes us very deeply into the mystery that is our voice.
The book contains seven chapters followed by these progressive exercises : 1. Toning the Body; 2. Healing the Listener; 3. Exploring the Depths of Memory; 4. Awakening the Sonic Spectrum; 5. Exploring the Vibratory Centers; 6. Making Overtones; 7. The Roar of Silence.
If you follow his instructions and step-by-step exercises, you will soon be amazed to find yourself producing the most incredible and beautiful sounds. You will also find that it's huge fun, lightens your mood, clears the mind of its usual clutter, and that it can help alleviate certain minor physical problems such as headaches and perhaps even a few major ones. In short, it's great fun and makes you feel GOOD!
The main effects of toning are to balance the mind, emotions, and body, and if you persist in practice you will learn how to direct certain frequencies to different areas of the body where the sustained natural vibrations of your voice can be used to produce a wide range of beneficial effects.
This makes perfect sense because all things, ultimately, are vibration. Modern Physics and Ancient Science both concur in this. The body is a complex and delicately balanced pattern of vibrations and energy flows which can very easily become disturbed, and which need continual fine-tuning and adjustment to be kept in top condition.
I think that's what toning does for us. I also think that is why wolves howl. They don't howl, as some believe, because they are lonely or to announce someone's death. They howl to rebalance the energies in their body and to re-center themselves. In other words, they love to howl because it makes them feel GOOD!
Human beings are gifted with a much finer vocal instrument than God has seen fit to give to wolves, and Campbell is of course not asking you to howl but to tone. My advice would be to give Campbell and toning a try.
Campbell has something very important to teach us. His is one of several good books I've looked at on the subject (a related and excellent book is Jonathan Goldman's 'Healing Sounds'). And I think that if, as I did, you give it a try you'll find toning enormous fun.
Humming and singing are of course unconscious forms of re-centering, though few of us have the ability to sing well. But when it comes to producing not songs but individual notes, you'll be surprised at how well you can do and how good it makes you feel.
So if you are one of those people who think that sound is 'just sound,' you might take a look at Campbell's book. It's one of those books that help put us back in touch with ourselves, and that bring us vitally important knowledge that could greatly benefit anyone.
Your Voice & Breath Can Heal You!! Superb Powerful Book!.......1999-10-13
This is a wonderfully-written, easy-to-read book that is powerfully-inspiring and deep-reaching. As Jean Houston's foreword shares, Don Campbell helps you become aware of and attune to universal sound, and find your resonance within yourself. Don shares his "Journey into Toning" and that he had "always known there are powers in music, sound, and light that are far more potent than the arts themselves..." (pg1) Reading this book lets you share in his journey, and wondrously guides you to enlarge your own journey into a healing, loving self-exploration and sharing of your own creative expression of yourself with yourself and, with the world. He writes: "To sing is not enough. We must tap the powers that lie beneath the consciousness of the song. The song leads down to the chant, the chant leads down to the tone, the tone leads to the energy beneath the sound --- the roar of silence." (pgs75-76) I had the pleasure of working with Don around the time of this book's publication, and the transformation experienced then illumines my work still. Don lives his work and beliefs, and aids you to discover and choose to do the same. With wonderful explanations, exercises, a few illustrations, and an empowering, sharing writing style, Don Campbell helps you share and enjoy yourself through the ROAR OF SILENCE.

A Good, Easy Read.......2005-09-13
If you know someone that is having a hard time adjusting to adverse circumstances get them to read this book. I have a newly adopted son that was having a hard time adjusting to his new family situation. He is not handicapped physically or mentally but the system he was in handicapped him emotionally giving him an entitlement mentality. I read the book in one sitting and then gave it to my son to read. For the last two years I have been trying to find a way to help him see that with hard work and dedication he can become anything that he wants to be. With him being a huge football fan, this book was just the ticket to help show him that he is not the only one that has had it tough. Not only will you enjoy the message of this book, so will your family and friends that need to know someone else has beat the odds and made it, inspite of and because of their difficulties and handi-caps.

How on earth did James Herriot come to be sitting on a high Yorkshire moor, smelling vaguely of cows? James isnt sure, but he knows that he loves it. This second hilarious volume of memoirs contains more tales of James unpredictable boss Siegfried Farnon, his charming student brother Tristan, animal mayhem galore, and his first encounters with a beautiful girl called Helen.

It Shouldn't happen to a vet.......2001-08-22
It was the first James Herriot book I read, and I think the best. It was funny at times and serious at others. It introduced me to a English Countryside vet's life. Sqeamish people might want to skip over parts. (He is a vet!) But over all, I really think this book is a wonderful must read.

Fun and quick to make, fabric balls are great for indoor play, for home-decor accents, for holiday ornaments, or as soft and cuddly toys for babies. The ten designs featured in this book include complete step-by-step directions and color diagrams to show how to construct and color each project. Easy-to-use templates take the math out of even the most complex of the designs, enabling crafters to create dazzling patchwork patterns that match up beautifully.
Customer Reviews:
Cute and fun ideas.......2006-05-11
Oh - these are too cute! First, there were fabric boxes and bowls - which I love! Now, try your hand at fabric balls.
Let me admit my bias - I like cute, clever projects. Jinny Beyer has done the math and laid it all out in clear steps. Plus, you can use up all those fabric scraps that you just can't throw away!
There are more than a dozen projects in this book and they are a good variety on this one theme. Since this book is by Jinny Beyer, the color schemes are inspiring and some of the projects make good use of border prints.
What will you do with fabric balls? Use them in home decor, for the children in your life, as cute baby gifts and more. The designs start simple and get sophisticated. The temari style balls would make a lovely gift, too.
well written and illustrated.......2006-02-23
If you want to make balls out of fabric this is an excellent book.
Fabric Balls.......2006-02-18
Well written and easy to follow directions to make these fun fabric balls. It takes reading the instructions carefully and completely and going step by step and you'll love what you can do.
Errata.......2005-11-10
I'm a novice, and my daughter and I found the instructions easy to follow. She hand sewed hers and I machine sewed mine. I think hers came out better :)
Just a quick note--and this will only make sense if you own the book.
I believe there is an error on page 33 about joining the two halves of the Aunt Etta's Diamond Ball.
You should connect hexagon 2 of section A to the triangle attached to hexagon 5 of section B.
Patchwork Puzzle Balls.......2005-08-03
A very interesting idea. The author describes a method to create 3D quilted objects. The patterns are very geometric and the methods to create them are clear and complete. The diagrams and photographs leads you through the process from start to finish. Ms. Beyer is a hand sewing advocate and this book and its patterns are designed to be hand sewn. However, she points out where us, machine piecers, can complete a ball. The book also provides a way to design your own shape and turn it into a 3D object.
This book is a natural companion to her Tesselations book.

A wonderful way to spend the winter.......2000-10-11
What do gardners do when they can't dig in the dirt? Well, reading about digging in the dirt is a fine alternative and Jan Dean has gathered an astonishing assortment of reading material for anyone who loves gardens. The Gardener's Reading Guide is an annotated bibliography that covers a wide range of books, including novels, that have a gardening theme. I highly recommend it to anyone who is putting together their own library of gardening books. It will simplify the hunt for the best books around. In fact, this book is a lovely resource for gardenlovers (like me) who don't garden, but think of this as a spectator sport.
Book Description
From celebrity moms to everyday moms, why and how mothers stay at work and stay sane and happy
The kids are sick but the boss needs the presentation on her desk by ten. The parent-child kindergarten brunch can't be missed, yet the business meeting beckons. When the only thing she knows for sure is that her day will bring a new set of challenges and priorities to be juggled, how does a stay-at-work mom do it all?
Wendy Sachs, stay-at-work mother of two, has interviewed women from every walk of life- from celebrities like makeup maven Bobbi Brown, designer Vera Wang, CNN's Soledad O'Brien, the Today Show's Ann Curry to everyday moms from all over the country-and has uncovered some inspiring answers. For starters, some stay-at-work moms have given up striving for balance; for true happiness and sanity, integration is the real key. Others have discovered that compartmentalization wearing different hats at different times of day-is the only way to thrive. For all, the psychological, emotional, and financial payback of work is what keeps them feeling alive; even if they could afford not to work (and many can afford the choice), they wouldn't have it any other way. Demonstrating that a byproduct of having career ambition is a happier marriage and family, How She Really Does It will validate the millions of women now attempting to"have it all," or at least some of it all the time. Revealing the keys to staying-at-work, staying sane, staying satisfied, and staying at the heart of her family as well, How She Really Does It is a modern working woman's handbook.

A MUST HAVE.......2006-09-21
"A friend of mine told me how great this book was and it was exactly what I needed. I don't have babies, but I do have two small children and I thought that this book was incredibly helpful in giving me practical ways to manage both my work and professional lives.
The book helped me to stop feeling guilty, showed me that there are ways to maximize the time I spend with my kids, and also showed ways to stay connected to their teachers, other activities and social events that are hard to do when you are working. I also loved the shortcuts the book talks about, like the slice and bake cookies tasting just as good as homemade ones. I think some of the other reviewers didn't really read the book. This is the most honest book on the subject that I have read and trust me, I think I've read them all. This is a must read for all working (stay-at-work) moms!
I really didn't learn any "secrets".......2006-09-09
A previous reviewer's title was "Are you kidding me?" It summed up my experience so much I wish I had thought of it.
This book was so bad I was almost angry when I was finished. I bought this book right before I came back to work from maternity leave. At the time I had a newborn. Like most new moms, I was barely sleeping. I thought I had accomplished a lot in a day if I showered AND ran an errand. I didn't know how I was going to get it together to balance a demanding job and motherhood. I thought this book would give me some tips on holding it together.
Boy was I wrong. First, I could not relate -- at all -- to any of the women in the book. I went back to work out of financial necessity. These women were trying to decide between being a SAHM or six-figure salaries. Neither of those are options for me!! Second, it seemed the women who did decide to go back to work (again, to jobs with the earning potential to hire excellent live-in childcare) did it for themselves. I am satisfied with my career, but going back to it was not a choice.
I picked it up again after I had been back at work for a while. The only upside to this book is that I could relate when some of the working moms said, "It's really hard to balance work and motherhood."
But then again, that's not particularly insightful. It didn't take this book for me to figure THAT out.
Practical Advice That I REALLY, REALLY Was Dying For!!!.......2006-08-01
This book was just what I needed at the perfect time. Every one of the people who spoke to the author, as well as the author herself, had tips and advice that really helped me. While balancing work and home, I now make practical, common sense choices that actually result in more quality time than I thought possible. I want to thank the author for saving my sanity, making my time with my kids much more valuable and for allowing me to feel great about the choices I've wanted to and had to make. PLEASE WRITE A SEQUEL!!!!
Disappointed.......2006-08-01
As others have expressed, I was disappointed that "normal" people were not interviewed for this book. Teachers, nurses, computer people etc. All the celebrities and highly-accomplished people made me feel small. It seemed kind of elitist to me. If it wasn't some lawyer or doctor, it was someone related to producing in broadcast television.
I am struggling with the SAHM and SAWM issue right now and am part-time SAWM. Some of the "unsuccessful" stories where the woman came back and said she shouldn't be in the book were very interesting to me.
The overall impression I got is that you have to work if you want to stay competitive. This I am not sure is true. Also no mention of normal type jobs. I guess it all comes down to your definition of success. The elitism I felt was that the definition of success in the book had to do with money, degrees and where you could get before having a baby. Then she was pushing for you to keep working if you could. I felt it was very anti-SAHM.
Are you kidding me?.......2006-07-24
How is it that a book that offers not a shred of practical advice gets the title "How She Really Does It"? This is a story-book about a bunch of executive women and their decisions to go back to work after baby, and how their employers handled it, with some commentary on whether such employer handled it well or not and how society needs to accommodate office-working moms better. Duh.

An erudite biography and commentary adds depth.......2002-03-21
Edmund C. Tarbell: Poet Of Domesticity by art historian and expert Laurene Buckley is an impressive and informative artbook showcasing the breathtaking work of Edmund C. Tarbell (1862-1938), a leading painter, teacher, and contributor to American Impressionism. Black-and-white and color representations of his most notable masterpieces fill the pages, while an erudite biography and commentary adds depth to the representations of skilled artwork. Edmund C. Tarbell: Poet Of Domesticity is very highly recommended for art history students as well as the non-specialist general reader having a passion for American Impressionism.

The politics of failure.......2001-05-15
This book gives a good insight into the politics of a certain "socialist/nationlalist" activist in the 1960s-80s in Ireland. It is a sad tale in that it is as much about political failure and misunderstanding as it is about an era prior to the fall of communism when Sheils-Makowski and her colleagues project of creating a kind of Cuba off Europe seemed possible (to them at least). It's about political failure: the project to defeat "British imperialism" (this is never defined, apart from simplistic references to capitalist corporations)ending in bloody sectarian strife as Shiels-Makowski switches from the socialist (Official) Sinn Fein to throw her lot in with the charismatic sectarian terrorist Seamus Costello and his fanatical and eventually marginalised Irish Republican Socialist Party. The book serves as a useful if highly tendentious account of the splits in the Left of the Irish Republican movement in the 1970s. It does however point out the misunderstandings- political and historical of the Irish nationalist protagonists of a so-called war of "liberation", i.e. protestants in Northern Ireland are viewed as the mere dupes of the British government with no real dynamism or political aims of their own. It now seems incredible that Shiels-Makowski and her comrades thought it entirely plausible that protestants could be persuaded by force that a united Irish socialist republic was a desirable option. And it is tragic that Ireland is still attempting to recover from such wrong-headed militarism.
As Margie's daughter-in-law I'm biased. It is good, however........1998-11-12
It's been some time since I read Daughter, I have only recently become a net-user and thought I'd look this up. I am surprised there have been no other reviews, this is a good book. If you don't get what's been going on over there, this will give you some insight. What those people have gone through is horrible, yet they keep on keeping on. Margie has been weeding through her boxes and boxes (and boxes) of research materials. I believe she has been writing, also. She plans to return to Ireland soon, so I won't be surprised if there's a new book in the works. Please, give this book a look.
