4 out of 5 stars AN OKAY LITTLE BOOK........2007-09-30

This one has been around for a few years, but it is really no worse for the wear. It does cover the 33 varities of orchids found in the state of Missouri and color photographs are available. The text is well done and quite readable. It must be noted though, and I might add stressed, that the purpose of the book (as stated by the auchor) is to enable the amature botanist to identify Missouri Orchids. While some technical terminology is used where needed, the author has included a very nice glossary. The reason this should be noted, is that is is not a book ment for the advance student or professional. It is a hany little field guide and the orchids addressed here can indeed be identified via the books use. The reason for the four star rating is that I have seen photographs of better quality. Also, the photographs emphasis is upon the bloom and if the plant is question is not in full blum, then the photographs leave quite a lot to be desired. For the serious student or amature, other field guides should be used. All in all though, this 1987 edition is pretty good and I am glad to have it in my collection. It has been quite helpful in the past.

            Book Description

Scott Bischke and Katie Gibson have done what many of us dream. They quit their jobs and traded in their possessions for a year of travel and simplicity. During the course of their journey, the biked more than 8,000 kilometers and experienced much of New Zealand's culture and beauty. Their freewheeling adventure took them from biking, hiking, and canoeing to fly-fishing for monster trout and picking kiwi fruit as transient laborers.

Theirs was a journey of discovery, both as individuals and as a couple. They shared the joys of exploration and new friendships, as well as the challenges of biking mountainous terrain and living in a two-person tent.

Two Wheels Around New Zealand is a light-hearted adventure story; but above all it is a celebration of the people, landscape, and lifestyle of New Zealand.

4 out of 5 stars The First of Two Books.......2007-07-25

This is the first of two books written about this couple. The second book is called Crossing Divides: A Couples Story of Cancer, Hope, and Hiking Montana's Continental Divide. You might enjoy reading about what happened to them after their marriage and their encounter with cancer and hiking the Continental Divide.

4 out of 5 stars read if interested in New Zealand and/or bike touring.......2005-07-09

This book packs in a lot as Scott and his partner, Kate, cover several thousand km of NZ bike touring, racing storms, pedaling up grueling roads, meeting all sorts of locals and travelers alike, and exploring natural and beautiful New Zealand.

Parts flew by too quickly for me, but other parts were described in fun, insightful detail. I feel I gained some good knowledge and insight into NZ after reading this book, especially in the areas of NZ weather (lots of rain, wind, and sun), how NZ treats foreigners (mostly good), and what bike-touring is like (tough and rewarding but mostly tough). Oh, and as a bonus, it really perked my interest in fly-fishing!

The book won't knock you out of your chair, but I doubt that is it's intention. A great read if you are planning a trip to New Zealand or planning a bike-touring trip; especially with a significant other! I hope to report soon as to how accurate this account is. The trip occurred in the late 1980s so I imagine NZ might have changed a lot since then, but maybe not.

            5 out of 5 stars a thoroughly enjoyable read.......2001-01-24

This was a great read - especially if you are interested in biking as an adventure. I just returned from New Zealand and agree with most of what he wrote!

            5 out of 5 stars Hold on a minute...........2000-02-29

AUSTRALIAN CYCLIST--"Here is an engrossing tale...Scott writes entertainingly and perceptively of the idiosyncrasies of the population and areas he and Katie passed through...If you have ever wanted to go cycling in New Zealand, you could do far worse than to read this book first. If you never want to go there, don't read it-it will probably change your mind!"

KLCC PUBLIC RADIO, Eugene, Oregon--" Today I have the pleasure of reviewing a marvelous book for you...The avid bike rider will be thrilled with the detailed and fascinating descriptions...TWO WHEELS AROUND NEW ZEALAND reads as if you were sharing travel yarns with old friends. Scott Bischke has a very informal tone, and he really brought me into his confidences as he shared his moods, fears, and hopes before and during this incredible year...Wouldn't this book make a great film!"

BACKROADS CYCLING-- "I did enjoy the book....the tone was nice, there were good illustrations, the descriptions of the difficulties encountered added to the story without resorting to the whining all too common in literature these days."

BOOKLIST--" ...Bischke offers insights into the pleasures of biking, fly-fishing, and just living."

BILLINGS GAZETTE--"Bischke has a fluid, chatty style..."

As the author of TWO WHEELS, I'm more than a little shocked at the first review posted. That I did not connect with that reader is apparent, though I have never heard the book described as anything but light-hearted and enjoyable (if the first review engendered a rating of 2, I'd hate to see his or her 1!). Wishing you happy pedaling, Scott Bischke

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and irritating........1999-03-18

Cover describes book as a "light hearted adventure story", should have been "a travel ordeal". Showed how lack of training and improper equipment can turn what should have been fun into drudgery. Choose biking as a cheap mode of transport rather than doing it for the pleasure of cycling which effected narrative. Constant whining and complaining made it hard to enjoy. Use of local NZ slang got old and author trying to force his personal views on locals seemed inappropriate. I have biked in NZ and it was nothing like the book described.

She tried to warn us: With the publication of Shrub in early 2000, syndicated columnist Molly Ivins detailed George W. Bush's privileged rise and disastrous reign as governor of Texas in the mid- to late `90s. In Bushwhacked, she looks at his first term as president. The picture she paints is unremittingly bleak—unless, of course, you're a big campaign donor well served by Bush's prescription for all economic ills (deregulation, tax cuts for those who need them least, and lax enforcement of worker and environmental safety standards). As the only president in U.S. history to slash taxes and go to war simultaneously, Bush wins consistently low marks from Ivins for pursuing "crony capitalism" to its inevitably depressing extremes. While many of the topics covered here have been covered extensively (Enron, the war in Iraq), Ivins does a good job of building on what's already been written (proving Bush's close ties to former Enron chief Ken Lay, and laying out the fundamentalist, apocalyptic view of Iraq and the Middle East that drives Bush's foreign policy). Ivins is particularly good in taking arcane federal regulations and showing how the Bush administration's lax oversight has hurt ordinary Americans, making their jobs, homes, water, and food less safe. Ivins is no distanced observer. She's clearly incensed by Bush's policies, but her reporting is so detailed and writing so witty that even those who come to the book undecided about Bush will likely be outraged by the time they finish it. ----Keith Moerer

            Book Description

A simultaneously rollicking and sobering indictment of the policies of President George W. Bush, Bushwhacked chronicles the destructive impact of the Bush administration on the very people who put him in the White House in the first place. Here are the ties that connected Bush to Enron, yes, but here, too, is the story of the woman who walks six miles to the unemployment office daily, wondering what happened to the economic security Bush promised. Here are reports on failed nation-building missions in Kabul and Baghdad. Here, too, the story of a rancher who has fallen prey to a Bush-Cheney interior department that is perhaps a wee bit too cozy with the oil industry. Bushwhacked is highly original and entirely thought-provoking—essential reading for anyone living in George W. Bush's America.

            4 out of 5 stars Dear Molly.......2007-03-08

Yours was the first book that turned me into an politicalaholic. The story you wrote of people who could make a change, lived simply but made a difference, had a real affect on me.

I was also unaware, until you came along, how this administration has relaxed food inspection standards to the point the production lines may not be stopped unless an inspector sees contaminants. It's stupefying that people are dying daily because food inspectors are not supposed to stand in the way of big business. This was just one chapter in a myriad of things you brought to light.

Thanks to Bush, Houston now has a higher level of air pollution than Los Angeles. There is not a clean river in the entire state. And there is an alarming rise in respiratory illnesses. The man also claimed, that as governor Texas had the most comprehensive health coverage in the country. The bill was only passed over his second veto, and was left unsigned on his desk. You let us know all these things.

Your writing style made each page an effortless wonder of new information served up in an impressive and humorous way.

It's good that there were people like you who walked the earth. We are the better for it, and that is why we will miss you.

I don't have a stetson, only my Yankee cap to tip, but my hat's off to you!

            Happy Trails, gracious lady!

America just lost a great journalist in Molly Ivins. That she found a way to add humor to her writing was value additive. It made the trip through her thoughtful work something you could cope with. Somehow the horrors she told us at least found some balance this way. I always thought of Mark Twain. In this way I thought she was wonderfully considerate of audience both for telling us the truth, and sparing a knife blade in our gut with the kindness of humor. It takes such writing work to write with humor.People do not realize. This was my favorite book as she wrote of Bush in office. I'd rather choke on dirt or learn to bungee jump off a hot air balloon than tell his "evolving" and she credited him with thinking ability, amazing. I am a school teacher and what she said about how education devolved/developed in Texas under the Shrub was very helpful. And on NCLB also so insightful. But I'm reviewing to say basically to all women, she was a model for having a voice, making a mark on the field, operation with integrity and grit. We should all have a week off to read her and recall what a mind. I think of her as an American writer who chose to report.I'd recommend any of her works but I preferred this one.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every American regardless of political affiliation........2006-12-17

Molly Ivins at her absolute best. She and Lou Dubose have put together an indictment of the Bush administration that every American - regardless of political affiliation - should read. This book had the power to infuriate me, delight me and upon occasion bring me to tears. Ivins and Dubose interviewed people (many of them life-long Republicans) who have been negatively impacted by the Bush administration through scorched earth land use legislation favoring large corporations instead of landowners, health care legislation favoring large health care conglomerates instead of patients, education legislation written to favor textbook manufacturers and test suppliers instead of students, food processing legislation favoring large scale operations at the expense of their workers. Many of those interviewed live lives shattered beyond repair by Bush and his cronies. They present very real and personalized accounts of the damage the Bush administration has done to this country and its people, much of which will likely take decades to undo - some which will never be undone. With her "no BS" attitude, Ivins, along with Dubose, has skewered the makers of this disaster deftly, accurately, and completely. Thank God for Molly Ivins.

            Book Description

From Molly Ivins and Lou Dubose, authors of Shrub, Bushwhacked is a hilarious, no-holds-barred look at George W. Bush and his administration, and an essential book for understanding the full, destructive impact of his presidency.

For years, bestselling political commentator Molly Ivins has been sounding the alarm about George W. Bush. In Shrub, her 2000 skewering of presidential candidate Bush, the inimitable Ivins, with co-author Lou Dubose, offered a devastating exposé of Dubya’s career and abysmal record as governor of Texas. Now, in their second book on our current White House occupant, Ivins and Dubose take the wire brush to the Bush presidency and show how he has applied the same flawed strategies he used in governing Texas to running the largest superpower in the world.

Bushwhacked brings to light the horrendous legacy of the Bush tax cut, his increasingly appalling environmental record, his administration’s involvement in the Enron scandal, and the real Bush foreign policy—botched nation building in Kabul and Baghdad, alienation of former allies—and, unfortunately, much more. Ivins and Dubose go beyond the too frequently soft media coverage of Bush to show us just how damaging his policies have been to ordinary Americans—“the Doug Jones Average,” rather than the Dow Jones Average. Bushwhacked is filled with sharp observation, humor, and compassion for the people often ignored by the federal government and the Washington press corps.

With the war on terrorism posing unprecedented challenges to our civil liberties, and with the Bush economic policy in shambles, it is high time for a close look at the state of our Union. Molly Ivins and Lou Dubose provide just that in Bushwhacked—an incisive, entertaining, and damning indictment of the Bush presidency.

            We've been Bushwhacked
Molly Ivins and Lou Dubose on:

Dubya’s involvement in the failure of Harken Energy Corporation:
“There are countless subjects on which George W. Bush might have pleaded ignorance in 1990, but a failing oil business was not one of them.”

Dubya’s accomplishments as governor of Texas:
“As full-time residents of the state that gave you tort reform, H. Ross Perot, and penis-enlargement options on executive health plans, we’re obliged to warn you that if Dubya Bush really had exported ‘the Texas Miracle,’ the country would be in deep shit.”

            Dubya’s environmental record:
“Bush has a chemical-dependency problem, but it’s not cocaine. It’s Monsanto, Dow, and Union Carbide. They wrote the checks that put him in the Texas governor’s mansion....Bush had two voluntary emissions-control programs here in Texas. One involved polluting industries. The other was directed at adolescent males, who were encouraged to ‘try abstinence.’ Only 3 of our 8,645 most obnoxiously polluting refineries actually volunteered to cut back on their toxic emissions. Numbers on teenage boys are not yet in.”

Why the Republican Party is the party of unregulated meat and poultry:
“The Republicans win elections in the ‘red states’ in the center of the country, where cattle and chickens are produced and slaughtered. Democrats win their elections in the ‘blue states’ on the coasts. Republicans use the USDA to pay off their contributors in the red states. The result of that crude electoral calculus is laissez-faire food-safety policy whenever a Republican is in the White House. (If you must eat while the Republicans control the White House, both houses of Congress, and the judiciary, you might want to consider becoming a vegetarian about now.)”

            5 out of 5 stars Brilliant content!.......2004-07-05

I have read this book and it scares the hell out of me: a right wing, Christian fundamentalist, oil cartel have staged a coup in the Whitehouse! Right under the nose of decent, hard working American people. (PLEASE remember they didn't actually win the 2000 election; this is the first administration in your great country's history to be appointed by the Supreme Court!)

This book exposes some of the methods and the madness of the current Whitehouse administration whom; if elected again, will probably seek to bring about the Armageddon they actually believe in - and they have the power to do it! Incidentally fellow reviewer - extreme liberal is oxymoronic, there's no such thing!

Back to the book: It's badly written, sorry, because it's a good book but some very sloppy writing and punctuation slightly spoils it, making it quite difficult to read; especially for ignorant people, (some of the reviewers plainly haven't actually read this book).

            5 out of 5 stars great book.......2004-03-28

great book. Bush should never have been president.

5 out of 5 stars Scary but true.......2004-01-20

From the economy to the environment, foreign policy to federal judge appointments, Bushwacked breaks out each element of the Bush administration's attack on America. Using solid research and factual evidence the authors outline not only what is currently underway, but the historical perspective of what Dubya and Rove left in their wake in Texas. The authors point out that they warned us in their previous book about what could happen if Bush was elected (appointed). The warning bells are going off again, this is if they ever stopped at all.

Although following the convoluted paths of some of Bush's business dealings with Enron, Harken, et al, can be cumbersome, I found the writing style to be quite understandable and enjoyable to read. I particularly liked the fact that they didn't attack Bush's personality, but rather his policies and patterns of governing that can be substaniated with facts. A significant distinction from the angry ad hominem rhetoric tossed against those that are patriotic enough to question what's being perpetrated on our country by this administration's policies.

Required reading for anyone under the jurisdiction of the US government!

3 out of 5 stars convoluted writing style.......2003-12-14

I really like the topic and am trying to read as much as I can, but these writers have a strange style, when mixed with too many numbers and stats, make it a cumbersome read. That being said, its right on and very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Jaw dropping, unabashed honesty........2003-11-22

I absolutely loved this book! I read it in one sitting because I could not tear myself away from it. The facts regarding Bush's presidency and his administration forces you to really look for the underlying motives in all of their moves. They are not supportive of the average american and are each and every one of them crooks in one way or another. Backed by real, factual, documented evidence (which is more than I can say for some of the right-wing literature out there); this book will cause you to laugh, gasp and your jaw to drop as you realize just what kind of men and women are running the country. This should be required reading for every single American.

                Book Description

Abducted at gunpoint and fearing for his life, Jan Reid took a swing at the gunman and missed. A muzzle flashed, and the bullet that struck his spine would send his life careening out of control–until he looked within himself, and to his family and friends, and found healing.

When Reid’s friends talk him into coming along to an Austin boxing gym for a workout, he has no idea it will send him down a path that will completely change his life. Inside, in a ring held together with duct tape and the blood and sweat of a group of gritty boxers, Reid falls under the spell of the sport.

As his skills develop, his relationships with his fellow boxers deepen, especially with the talented young Mexican immigrant, Jesus Chavez. Through Chavez’s promising career, and his own informal sparring, Reid plunges into the culture of competition among men. But then, just when Chavez achieves a number-one world ranking, he is deported to Mexico. Heartbroken, Reid travels to Mexico City to watch Chavez begin his comeback, when a bombshell of a different sort blows open Reid’s own life: One night, after celebrating Chavez’s victory in a shadowy part of Mexico City, pistoleros carjack the taxi he is sharing with his friends. In the ensuing scuffle, a bandit fires a bullet that pierces Reid’s left arm, rips through his abdomen, and lodges itself in his spine, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

Reid then confronts new kinds of struggles in which the rules are no longer clear–the battle to regain the ability to walk, to bolster his marriage, to untangle his newly complicated relationship with Mexico, a country he once loved, and to live with dignity. Inspired by the love and valor of his wife, Dorothy, and daughter, Lila, Reid also draws on lessons from the boxing ring–physical conditioning, discipline, controlling frustration, and overcoming fear. Thus begins Reid’s physical and emotional journey to recover his strength, his masculinity, and his sense of self.

Reid not only examines the effects of his physical disability but also offers a revealing portrait of the testosterone-driven worlds that collided on that fateful night. With the observational prowess of a journalist and the raw power of a fighter, Reid shares in these pages his discovery of the value of other kinds of strength–and his new perspective on the evolution of Western male culture and machismo alike. Rich with insight and vividly told, this is the remarkable story of a true survivor.

"Jan Reid's memoir is a powerful story of love, loss, and one kind of redemption. Living to tell such a tale is an accomplishment in itself, but it takes an even greater talent to write it so beautifully."
ABRAHAM VERGHESE, AUTHOR OF THE TENNIS PARTNER AND MY OWN COUNTRY

"A lesser man might have died from the bullet that Jan Reid took to his gut that night in Mexico City. A lesser writer might have turned the experience into one more tale of tough-guy swagger. But Reid lived, and so does his story, thanks to his self-honesty and the steel-tipped imagery of his sentences. If you ever wondered what it would be like to go through the worst nightmare of our times, read this fine book."

"The Bullet Meant for Me is a beautiful rumination about courage, friendship, and the sometimes imperceptible distinctions between macho posturing and manly conduct."

A fabulous book for quilt history lovers. The stories behind these magnificent quilts and the patterns to make some as well. What more could you want! Instructions from the authors are easy to read and execute.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful quilts, great instructions.......2006-03-22

this book would be worth buying for the photos of 19th century quilts alone--especially those of susan mccord. that the instructions are first rate, and full-sized patterns are included, makes it even more fantastic.

the only reason i do not give it five stars is the inclusion of instructions for so many variations of log cabin and other well documented and frequently presented designs. i would have been happier if the space had been used to present less common quilt designs. i love log cabin and many of its variations, but you can find instructions for them everywhere.

that being said, this book is still a great addition to any quilter's library.

4 out of 5 stars Great new book.......2006-01-30

Having been a member of The Henry Ford for many years, I eagerly awaited this book. I was not disappointed. The photography was lovely, and the quilts chosen were beautiful, especially the section on Susan McCord's amazing quilts. I was lucky enough to see these quilts up close and although the majesty of her masterpieces is not as obvious in these photos, they do give one a great idea of how wonderful these quilts are. Many great chapters in this book including a textile timeline. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in quilt history or any fan of The Henry Ford.

                        Book Description

Although very little can be done to alter the course of dementia, much can be done to maximize the quality of life of people with the condition. Research as well as practical experience suggest that behavior management, especially through programs that provide meaningful and constructive activity, is currently the most effective treatment.

In Keeping Busy, James Dowling describes a variety of activities designed to bring meaning and enjoyment to the lives of persons with dementia. The activities are organized by general categories such as music, exercise, horticulture, pets, humor, and social events. The largest section deals with communication and includes word games that help people strengthen their remaining verbal skills. The description of each activity includes step-by-step instructions, as well as tips on how to adapt it for small or large groups, for individuals at home or in an organization, or people who are bedridden.

5 out of 5 stars Many Useful Ideas Discussed.......2006-12-09

Even though this book is over ten years old, many of the ideas for activities suggested are extremely helpful in engaging a person with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. I especially like using the trivia questions

4 out of 5 stars age-appropriate especially for elderly, or any brain injured person.......2006-11-23

Because of the many phrases, songs, games that refer to things anyone born from 1910 to 1950 might remember, it was exceedingly fun and appropriate to go through things with my TBI husband. We laughed and said, Have to sing that for our grandchildren" and reminded each other of the answers. I could see the author's view of older people not wanting to do, say, art, then speaking of their brother who painted, and gradually having a wonderful time. I had occasion to refer this book to someone whose mother was just diagnosed, and I did so enthusiastically. Makes me wonder what the dementia patients who were born past the 70s will have that's as much fun as these old songs and cliches. The trick is to play WITH the patients and listen to their resulting stories--don't just throw the book their direction.

                        4 out of 5 stars Comforting & Practicle Info.......2006-07-06

After checking this book from the library, I purchsed a copy as a reference. The author gives practicle activities which enable the caregiver and the patient to survive dementia with dignity.
Other writings are more scientific and testimonial; This book gets us off our duff!

2 out of 5 stars Not helpful if you're looking for practical activity ideas.......2004-07-04

I'm an occupational therapist looking for specific ideas for activities that will interest dementia patients who can't participate in bingo and the other activities offered by a poorly run activities program in a typical nursing home. The dementia unit described in this book sounds wonderful, but not easily found in a long term care setting. Once again, I've found a book with great ideas that are impossible to carry out in the real world of long term care.

Tomkins' five essays are a great place to start if you've ever wondered about the purpose behind the "avant-garde" in art and want a general overview of its origins. The chapter on Jean Tinguely is especially fine: it is hard to resist the story of a man who builds robots designed to continuously paint abstracts, start fires or simply destroy themselves. The book is well written, easy to read and contains a subtle sense of humor. Reading this book will make you more intelligent.

4 out of 5 stars excellent art criticism for the neophyte.......1998-04-18

this book is a surprisingly accessible work on the lives of five important artists (duchamp, cage, tinguely, rauschenberg, and cunningham) of the avant-garde, each working from a different discipline. tomkins has gathered exhaustive biographical data on each artist and the reader gets the impression that he is good friends with each of them. his critical stance on the artwork discussed is respectful, and he refrains from using a lot of artworld jargon. a very entertaining read.
