Excellent guidebook!.......2007-01-12
A thoroughly well researched, practical and well thought out guidebook that is really useable. This author really knows her stuff. I've seen other features in publications and other guidebooks she's written and she always gives you just the right info for travelling with your family. I've used this one twice, and it helped me navigate the city easily.

The ankle biters will thank you.......2002-11-09
If you are familiar with other Cadogan guides, this is a little bit of a departure from the usual style, but just as recommendable.
This book contains a wealth of information for parents, and older kids, planning their trip to Paris. There are sections on the main tourist areas of he city, eg the Latin Quarter, which include the attractions most likely to appeal to children (never neglecting the `Big Sites'), including museums, and especially parks and playgrounds, shopping relevant to kids, and best of all, family friendly eating places in each quarter, including opening hours, an indication of price, and some specialties/type of fare.
There are sections on entertainment, sports and activities, shopping, eating and sleeping. One useful chapter is on `Themed' days out - eg On the trail of the French Revolution, Paris from below, Paris from above - always with food stop suggestions.
The latter part of the book is devoted to Disneyland Paris, which provides comprehensive information if you are planning to visit there.
One negative: the maps aren't all that useful for actual navigation. They do give an indication of the relative location of different places of interest in each geographical area, and show metro locations so are useful for planning your itinerary. But the streets are not named and you may need an accompanying, more comprehensive map.
No hesitation about recommending this book, and I am using it in conjunction with Fodor's Around Paris With Kids (reviewed elsewhere).
A necessity if you are visiting Disneyland-Paris.......2001-04-27
While this book covers all the bases for a trip to Paris with children, I found the most useful section to be the extended chapters on Disneyland-Paris. The Disneyland park is huge (1/5th the size of Paris) and this guide helped us quickly prioritize where to go and what to do based on the ages and interests of our children.
Helpful stuff.......2000-07-12
Just what I needed when I went touring Paris with my kids. On the ball information delivered with authority and in a way that makes me feel sure the author is in the same boat as me - regularly desperate to find a loo, ice-cream, whatever - trying to please my brood but get to know more about the city myself and have as good a time too. Nice work. Any more kid's city guides welcome!
has the info you want.......2000-06-25
This is great guide! I lived in the Paris area as an adult, but dreaded returning as a family to this exquisite city. My fears couldn't have been more misplaced. With this guide in hand, I found many things for young children to do. The guide doesn't pull any punches, e.g., it tells you which restrooms will be out of toilet paper, how long queues will be, whether at Berthillon or EuroDisney. I can't find one area where the guide falls short. Approximately ¼ of the guide is devoted to EuroDisney. With this guide in hand though, Paris would be fine place for kids, even without a visit to EuroDisney. Nonetheless, the EuroDisney section is detailed and well done. The page with The Best of Paris for Kids in 19 different categories is alone worth the purchase price. Elsewhere in the guide, most all of your questions will be answered, from where to sleep, eat, and shop, to how to plan days for all seasons of the year, indoors or out, for older or younger children. Hours of operation, addresses, phone numbers, transport tips are included for various destinations. I haven't found a better guide so focussed on taking children to Paris than this one yet. So if you're thinking about a family vacation there, get this guide, and enjoy your trip!

Best Family Guide to Paris That I Have seen.......2004-02-11
This was really a very good guide book. The maps and pictures were really well done, and the book was comprehensive in its treatment yet very concise and portable. Very nicely done, even had a fairly good section on Disney Paris, although inevitably some things weren't as much detail as I would have liked (seasonal closing of some rides, details about hotels, etc). I really liked the themed itineraries at the beginning and really thought this was a nicely done book. For families with smaller kids, I recommend the first 2 "Madeline" books as well, and "Linnea in Monet's Garden" as ways to get the kids excited about Paris, and you can always throw in Disney's Hunchback video too. Remember to make reservations for the restaurant in advance, not only will you not get a seat otherwise, but you can avoid the long lines by going directly to the restaurant entrance.

Born in 1920, Helen Thomas was one of United Press International's very few female journalists for years. She promoted herself to UPI's White House Press Corps in 1960 ("I just started showing up every day") and has reported on eight administrations. Her episodic, old-fashioned autobiography contains anecdotes about each president, their first ladies, and their staff. Her stories are often funny, and she doesn't mind when the joke's on her: "Isn't there a war somewhere we can send her to?" Colin Powell inquired after being buttonholed at a party; President Carter's mother said the greatest lesson she learned in 80 years was, "Never to open my mouth around Helen Thomas." She's also fair: even the press secretaries get balanced treatment, though Thomas criticizes the White House's growing efforts to "manage" the news. (Her most affectionate political portrait is of the unmanageable Watergate wife Martha Mitchell.) Thomas pays loving tribute to her parents, hardworking, religious Syrian immigrants, and to her late husband, Associated Press reporter Doug Cornell, but she keeps the focus on the people and public events she covered. Scrupulously impartial when reporting the news, she feels free here to be bluntly opinionated, especially in her unrepentant advocacy of the media's responsibility to ask uncomfortable questions, even when the public condemns them as intrusive. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
"Thank You, Mr. President."
From the woman who has reported on every president from Kennedy to Clinton comes a privileged glimpse into the White House -- and a telling record of the ever-changing relationship between the presidency and the press.
Helen Thomas wanted to be a reporter from her earliest years. She turned a copy-aide job at the Washington Daily News into a powerful and successful career spanning thirty-seven years and eight U.S. presidents. Assigned to the White House press corps in 1961. Thomas was the first woman to close a press conference with "Thank you. Mr. President." She was also the first female president of the White House Correspondents Association and the first woman member, later president, of the Gridiron Club.
In this revealing memoir, which includes hundreds of anecdotes, observations, and personal details. Thomas looks back on a career spent with presidents at home and abroad, on the ground and in the air. Providing a unique view of the past four decades of presidential history. Front Row at the White House offers a seasoned study of the relationship between the chief executive officer and the press -- a relationship that is sometimes uneasy, sometimes playful, yet always integral to the democratic process.
Download Description
From the earliest age, Helen Thomas wanted to be a reporter. Raised in Depression-era Detroit, she worked her way to Washington after college and, unlike other women reporters who gave up their jobs to returning veterans, parlayed her copy aide job at the Washington Daily News into a twelve-year stint as a radio news writer for UPI, covering such beats as the Department of Justice and other federal agencies. Assigned to the White House press corps in 1961, Thomas was the first woman to close a press conference with "Thank you, Mr. President, " and has covered every administration since Kennedy's. Along the way, she broke down barriers against women in the national media, becoming the first female president of the White House Correspondents Association, the first female officer of the National Press Club, and the first woman member and later president of the Gridiron Club. In this revealing memoir which includes hundreds of anecdotes, Thomas evaluates the enormous changes that Watergate brought and how they have affected every president since Nixon. Providing a unique view of the Last four decades of presidential history, Front Row at the White House offers a seasoned study of the relationship between the chief executive officer and the press -- a relationship that is sometimes uneasy, sometimes playful, yet always integral to democracy.
Customer Reviews:
"Mr. President?".......2007-10-13
If you've ever wondered about the woman who for years asked the first question at presidential news conferences and also ended each one, then this memoir will be entertaining. Thomas had a long career and got to know every president since JFK pretty well, or so you'd think from this book which is chock full of interesting anecdotes and opinions. It is a bit repetitious and would have benefited mightily from tighter editing. One wonders if the publisher was a little too reverential to use the red pencil. Somewhere along the line, UPI, her employer, lost a lot of its power and impact, due to business turmoil. Still, Thomas soldiered on. She doesn't say much about UPI in the memoir, probably because she's still working, though for Hearst. If you follow the journalism biz, you'll want to read this one.
Great read!.......2007-01-09
The book is a true reflection of who Helen is and her commitment to the ideals and responsibility of being a "reporter". Whether or not you agree with Helen's political views; it is hard to argue with her views regardig the responsibility of the press corps.
Incredible life...........2006-07-16
It's one thing to be a history buff and read about events of our country and the world. It's another to live it. Thomas has been an active part of almost every major historical event our country has seen for decades. It's a life the rest of us could only dream about. I thank her for giving me the opportunity to read about the behind the scenes events that have made up our history. The writing is very newspaper-like ie short and to the point. It's perfect for the busy adult who wants to pick it up for short spans.
Everthing you didn't want to know about Helen and very little about anything else.......2006-02-18
I was looking forward to reading this book but was sadly very disappointed. Helen Thomas takes great pains not to rock the boat. She is in a position to make intelligent insider analysises, but she chooses instead to sit on the fence. She seems tickled pink that various presidents noticed her! And her birthday!!!! Sheesh!
white house years.......2005-01-25
I wanted to give this book at 5 star rating but the first two thirds of the book are written too much in the style of a quick note taking journalist and I found the writing needing of more narrative. The ' I was there and they thought I was a female tiger amongst men' message over and over again gets tired after a while. The photos of the author with the presidents are ok but Ms. Thomas should have included those moments in history that she was a part of, Nixon's resignation, Clinton intern scandal, Reagan--Iran-Contra, etc. Ms. Thomas' final third of the book is excellent. The writing changes. She elaborates and the book excels.

BREED GUIDE BY AKC JUDGE JOHN MARVIN.......2000-05-02
This book was originally published as The Complete Scottish Terrier in 1967. This is a new updated version of this work. Mr. Marvin was long active in this breed in the early days in this country. This volume examines in depth the history of this breed, the major champions in both the United Kingdom and the United States. One of the highlights of this book is the section on grooming the Scottish Terrier, with excellent drawings demostrating both correct and incorrect grooming. There is an extensive listing of British and American kennels that were active in this breed up to 1980. Also covered in depth is breeding axioms, conditioning show stock, bloodlines and line breeding and the standard for the breed. There is a large amount of black and white photos of past and present Scottish Terrier champions, including Scotties who won big at Westminster-best in show. Although this book is now out of print, it is not difficult to locate and is a must for anyone interested in this breed. Both the pet Scottie owner and the Show enthusiast will learn much from this volume. The cover is green and white with a large photo of the great champion "Carmichael's Fanfare" who won BIS at Westminster. This dog was handled by John Murphy and owned by Mr. & Mrs Charles Stalter.

Absolute "Primer" for decoupaging..............2006-11-10
If you're looking for a book that makes the craft easy, even for a novice, then this is the book for you. I've got no talent for arts and crafts, and had no prior instruction, but I really wanted to do this particular project. The book took me step by step, outlined all the materials I'd need, and described how to decoupage on various surfaces. I was very happy with the outcome and I'd recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn. Instructions are well written and easy to understand.
absolute beginner's decoupage.......2006-11-06
I rate this 4 stars only because what I had hoped for was not in the book at least not in the detail that I had hoped. I wanted to know more about a beautiful finish. The projects finishes still have the brush strokes in them and I wanted to know how to fix that . It is a beautiful book however and I did learn alot from it.
Excellent to start out with!.......2003-09-07
Really one of my favorite books (I'm a beginner) - this one steps you through both in words and pictures so you can follow along. It has different types of surfaces and tips for dealing with the differnt situations. Samples are really good but not intimidating.
Somewhat helpful, but dissappointing.......2002-01-11
As a complete beginner, I was hoping for the most basic of basics but this book seem to include projects I personally would not consider for beginners. I wanted your basic wood jewerly box, simple designs, etc.to start with but that wasn't the case. One review I read before purchasing this book indicated that the author covered the topic of copyright infringment, but I saw barely any mention of that. I now have a few completed projects I am in doubt about. I think this topic should have been covered more thououghly as I don't think people want to be sued. Some of the directions seemed incomplete. Example, one project for a glass vase showed the designs placed on the inside. Personally, I thought that sounded wrong. I would have thought the designs would be placed on the outside to be kept away from more water exposure but no explanation was given as to why the designs were placed on the inside. I also found the information about sealing surfaces incomplete. There is incomplete/barely/or none on surfaces such as plastic, fabric, paper. As a beginner, I would like to know how to prepare any surface. This book seemed more for an intermediate decoupage artist.
All You need to know to get started.......2000-08-03
Being new to the art of Decoupage, I needed a sourcebook that explained the craft step by step. This book walked me through with color images, instructions, and supply lists for each method. There were also a variety of techniques, some of which I had not been aware of. Got my creative wheels turning. Should keep me busy for awhile. A good starting point for anyone!

Book Description
The average American consumes nearly 150 pounds of sugar and other sweeteners a year. Many people are dangerously addicted to sugar, putting them at risk for a host of diseases and conditions including hypoglycemia, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, allergies, obesity, tooth decay, and more. While many sources of sugar are quite obvious (cookies, candy, soft drinks), hundreds of processed foods have hidden sugars that are often the real cause of trouble for people trying to improve diet and nutrition.
Lick the Sugar Habit Sugar Counter exposes the sugar content of thousands of brand-name and generic food items, including fast foods. The counter lists sugar content in both grams and teaspoons, plus caloric values, as well as breakdowns of simple and complex carbohydrate components.
This handy book is the perfect pocket-sized companion for grocery- store shopping and restaurant outings. Learn where the sugar is and lick the sugar habit.
Customer Reviews:
Disapointed.......2005-10-11
I thought this book was a how to book. It is a book that tells the amount of suggar in foods that you eat. This book did not tell me anything about how to stear kids away from sugary foods. I was looking for good sugar subsitutes and natural foods. If you want to know exactly how much sugar you are eating then this book is for you.
I BOUGHT YOURS, SIS, NOW BUY MINE. ;-).......2003-11-27
A WONDERFUL BOOK BY A GREAT WRITER! NANCY HAS PROVEN TIME AND AGAIN THAT SHE KNOWS HER SUBJECTS. I APPRECIATE ALL THAT YOU DO FOR ME. NOW, DO YOURSELF, AND ME, A FAVOR,BUY "Running Out Of Road", IT WILL SCARE THE SWEETS OUT OF YOU! Love ya, Robert Appleton, Jr.
Revealing Why Americans Are Getting Fatter!.......2002-06-04
This counter is just what is needed to track the sugar in our foods-especially in the fast food department. Excess sugar was the culprit in my pre-osteoporosis, teeth problems & acidity of the stomach. I feel so much better since I have cut down on sugar. This book is the only one I have found that counts sugar in grams & teaspoons.
Very Useful Book.......2001-10-16
On the contrary to the last review of Lick the Sugar Habit Sugar Counter, I found the book very well organized. All I needed to do was look in the index and find fruit. I turned to page 133 and looked under fruit and ther was 1/2 a grapefruit. The book is called Sugar Counter, not fat and protein. Dr. Appleton gives the protein size, calories, carbohydrates, sugars (in grams and teaspoons). I find many whole foods under dairy, fruit and vegetables and others. What I like best about this book is that it lists the products sold by most fast food restaurants. Candy bars have their have ingredients on their packages unlike Big Macs who do not. Dr. Appleton has exposed the incredible amounts of sugar in our fast foods and this I believe, is a blessing. I give this book 4 stars.
NOT WHAT WE NEED!.......2001-08-20
This book, like so many others does NOT provide a single, complete, alphabetized list / directory of all foods that list the sugar content.( I would also like to have fat, calories and protein too....) I spent MORE time determining HOW they "organized" the foods they do have into categories than actually getting any good information! Why can't they just make one single list of ALL foods? Additionally,MOST ALL OF THE FOOD LISTED are prepackaged, brand names or fast foods etc. and I could NOT find anything simple like: the sugar content of 1/2 a graefruit! SAVE YOUR money on this one. This one is NOT a solution in the quest for good, well-organized information! .... Hope that this assists somone and saves them from buying this poorly designed, non-informative "Lick the Sugar Habit Sugar Counter book!"
Book Description
Bronislaw Malinowski (1884–1942) was one of the most colorful and charismatic social scientists of the twentieth century. His contributions as a founding father of social anthropology and his complex personality earned him international notoriety and near-mythical status. This landmark book presents a vivid portrait of Malinowski’s early life, from his birth in Cracow to his departure in 1920 from the Trobriand Islands of the South Pacific. At the age of 36, he had already created the innovative fieldwork methods and techniques that would secure his intellectual legacy.
Drawing on an exceptionally rich array of primary documents, including Malinowski’s letters and unpublished diaries and manuscripts, Michael Young provides significant new information about the anthropologist’s personality, private life, and career. The author describes Malinowski’s restless life of travel, connections with intellectuals and artists, Nietzschean belief in his own destiny, and legendary fieldwork. The singular man who emerges from these pages fascinates on every level—as a volatile friend and lover, a provocative colleague, a passionate diarist, and a brilliant thinker who pioneered radical change in the field of anthropology.
Customer Reviews:
Very well written biography.......2005-10-19
This is a very well written and researched biography about a fascinating intellectual. The author has done an outstanding job in reconstructing many aspects of Bronislaw Malinowksi's life, such as his intellectual development, his relationships with his family (most importantly his mother), his friends and women. Furthermore, one gets a lot of insight into his health, one of Malinowksi's obsessions. The author has collaborated with one of Malinowksi's daughters and has extensively drawn on his diaries and notes. One gets to know "Bronio" to a degree that during his lifetime only his best friends would have known him.
The book covers the time from his childhood to the end of his stay in Australia and Papua New Guinea, and the beginning of his marriage. Besides being informative about Malinowski himself, I learned a lot about the intellectual history of Europe (England, Germany and Poland) and Australia at that time and about the development of anthropology. In addition, one gets to read interesting descriptions of his travel into a fascinating part of the world, Papua New Guinea and of the lifes of the inhabitants of PNG, both the natives, with their fascinating and exotic cultures, as well as colonial buerocrats and missionaries. Malinowksi researched the natives, and at times enjoyed their company, at other times treated them with disdain and western arrogance. The buerocrats and missionaries he typically disliked, but he used them for his research.
As Malinowksi kept a diary most of the time and wrote a wealth of letters, the book is also rich in great quotes from him.
For my taste, this biography sometimes goes into too much detail, especially in regards to Malinowksi's private life. It is by no means easy reading, but well worth the effort.
well researched.......2005-08-29
Well researched, well written, covering the ground thoroughly and yet still highly accessible and entertaining to read, this book could be taken as a model for other acdemics intending to write a biography for the general as well as the specialised market. Not only that, but it is nicely produced. I found it very useful for my research purposes, which specifically involved Australian anthropology from the point of view of the layperson.
