Michigan ghost and near-ghost towns.......2007-09-05
What constitutes a ghost town can be widely interpreted, I suppose, but readers should be aware that quite a few of the towns dealt with in this book are alive and healthy; almost all of them can still be found in the DeLorme Michigan Atlas. Be that as it may, Larry Wakefield knows a good story when he sees one, and all the towns listed here have a good story or two attached to them. Most of the towns are located in the southern part of the state, and Wakefield gives good directions (mostly) for those venturing into the field. The locator maps for each town, however, are a bit crude, and the star indicating the location of Superior which he has north of Grand Haven should be down by Holland. Also the directions for Kensington in Oakland County seem fuzzy (US-16 is actually I-96 and Turtle Lake is now Kent Lake). But the book is entertaining and well written, and those who like to mosey around small towns or placenames on a map that once held greater promise than they show today should find much to admire in this book.
I really like it........2006-06-22
I just got this book in the mail and it is very intersting. I am originally from Michigan so this book holds an extra special interest for me. I reccomend this book to anyone interested in ghost towns in general or in Michigan ghost towns in particular. The book is very imformative. 5 stars.
ghost towns fact or fiction.......2000-05-29
i have lived in mich my whole life and spent many summers up north. i got this book right around the time i recieved my licence, so this book made up north interesting for a kid. my brother and i drove to the area's near us, and managed to locate two of them. we found an old cemetary, and the the oldest head stone was about 1920ish. we also found ruins of a house and a very old rusted ford. it was fun. if you are ever in the area get a map of the northern half of the state and try to locate them. its a great time to spend with your kids.
This book is a good mix of storytelling and history........1999-09-11
I found this book in a bookstore on a rainy day and did not put it down till the last page was read. Having spent meny summers in Michigan this book directed me to a few new spots I had not known about. A few made for some interesting sight seeing and photography. In particular, "The ghostly Ruins of Marlborough". I spent the better half of a hot summer day walking, climbing and exploring the "the Ruins of Rome". Nearby North Lake provided a place to cool down before dinner. If you explore the back roads when you travel this gives you some interesting spots to stop. I would have liked it if there were better maps of the locations in the book but overall it made for several interesting days. If you like reading about the history of Michigan or ghost towns this is a good book. I now know how I want to spend next summer. Looking for "Ghost Towns Of Michigan Part 2"

Book Description
"Steve Brown takes us on a profound journey of his many steps, the many turnings of the wheels that have borne him through his life to the present moment. His shock, his anger, his bitterness, and, ultimately, his courage in the face of adversity, not only educate but remind us of his fine humanity as well as our own. His advocacy doesn't preach but teaches. With words describing his life and the lives of those close to him, he opens a wide door through which any who can read or care to grow can pass."
ÂMark Medoff, Author of Children of a Lesser God
"Disability culture is at the heart and soul of the disability movement, and in Steve Brown's writings we see that culture shining in all its glory. "
ÂMary Johnson, Editor, Ragged Edge magazine
ÂMovie Stars and Sensuous Scars is a powerful book. I strongly relate to Steve's writing and ideas. The writing is clear and flows well. The ideas are beautifully radical. He gives true insight into disability and people with disabilities. His is a voice demanding to be heard.Â
ÂDavid Pfeiffer, Disability Studies Quarterly editor
Customer Reviews:
A Book That Will Provoke You and Make You Think.......2007-08-03
As an author and PhD student I take seriously the area of disability studies. This thought provoking book is an excellent way to consider those whom society deems different and the limitations we place which blocks an individual more than any physical disability could. I found the writing exemplary and the content utterly compelling.
I would recommend this book not only to educators but to authors and writers who wish to add depth to their characterizations and develop an understanding of disability culture.

The Complete Manual of Wood Bending.......2007-02-23
My Boyfriend loved this book. he has been reading since i got it for him. He says that it has the answers that he's been want ing regarding the art of woodbending
Easy to read and follow.......2007-02-11
I purchased this book as a gift for my husband who works with wood for a hobby. He says it is an excellent book and easy to understand.
I liked the prompt and reliable shipping from Amazon. The book was a birthday gift and arrived well before the time I needed it.
I bought three books on wood bending; this is the best.......2002-12-17
After getting in over my head, I bought three wood bending books: this one (Schleining), Zachary Taylor's "Wood Bender's Handbook" and "Fine Woodworking on Bending Wood." Taylor is slightly more recent, but it omits many pertinent aspects. For example, he doesn't cover milling (cutting) or coopering (low-angle joints) wood as a way to obtain curves, and he gives little attention to some practical aspects, such as drawing plans. Taylor is relatively superficial and focused on making musical instruments. The Fine Woodworking book is spotty (magazine articles from 1975-1984) and covers many advanced topics (e.g. Lapstrake boatbuilding, tapered laminations, violin making). Schleining is by far the best choice for the intermediate-level amateur that needs advice from someone with a lot of practical experience. His sidebars and outlines really help a woodworker make good decisions. He gives extremely helpful details on glueing, jigs, and routing. He shies away from steam-bending, because it gives such variable results, but he finds that it can often be combined profitably with follow-up milling or laminating. He gives superb practical advice on which machine to use in what combination, he has excellent jig plans, and many hard-won safety recommendations. He does not provide project plans (Taylor does for oval boxes, walking sticks, boat ribs, and chair backs). Luthiers will enjoy this book, but also find more detail in the other two.

growing and using scented geraniums.......2004-07-21
If your interested in scented gardening, this booklet is a good place to start. It gives you an overview of the different kinds of geraniums--what they look like, smell like, and their different uses. It then goes on to give some gardening hints, and even some crafting ideas. Alot of good infomation in a small package.

Interesting info........2006-06-26
Typical of diet books with lots of info that you hurry through to get to the meat of it. Pun not intended. Well researched and good diet to follow to get started on the program.

this book confused me. why did it need to be so mathmatically challenging? i don't want formulas and percentages.....just tell me what to do and how to do it. this plan is a good one, and i found better, easier to follow info on the net for free. i'm using maybe 5 pages out of this entire book to supplement the info i found. find it on clearance or borrow someone's copy.
excellent change.......2005-08-23
I found the book very informative. The combination of nutrition, exercise and spirituality all tied together made you seem like there is a purpose for change. A Life-Changing Book.......2004-02-13
This is a great book! The recipes are simply delicious--I never have been able to bake bread before and have it turn out, but the whole wheat recipe here comes out beautifully and it's delicious. Some of my favorite recipes are the banana barley loaf, the lentil loaf, the oat pancakes and topping (I used apples rather than pears for the topping), the corn bread, the lentil soup, the marina and pasta sauces, the Indian Subzi. There are too many to name them all! And too, I use the advice in this book to convert older favorite recipes with unhealthy ingredients to heart healthy yet delicious alternatives. I love the approach too, with a focus on not only nutrition and fitness but also emotional and spiritual health-- I found that once I was used to not adding salt to food, and consistently followed the advice in the book, I no longer craved foods as I used to, achieved my target weight, and felt better than I ever had in my life. I have never had heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, but all are very prevalent in my family. I wanted to do something to lose weight and to keep myself fit. I think the advice in this book is for everyone, those with heart disease and those who want to keep their hearts healthy. Heal Your Heart is an awesome book that can change your life.
Book Description
One of the eminent figures of the Victorian era, Henry Cole (1808-1882) was a visionary whose pioneering ideas helped create the magnificent London museum that is now called the Victoria and Albert. With Prince Albert (consort of Queen Victoria), Old King Cole also helped to make London's Great Exhibition of 1851 a rousing triumph. Yet Cole's important contributions to cultural history have largely been forgotten.
The Great Exhibitor is the first full-length biography of this museum pioneer who also played a pivotal role in establishing the English postal system, in expanding the railway, and in art and science education. This detailed portrait captures the personality of a man who in his own time aroused both admiration and antipathy, and restores to his proper place in history a larger-than-life Victorian phenomenon.

Book Description
The autobiography of one of the most popular saints in history, now available in a new translation.
Beyond being recognized as the patron saint of Ireland (perhaps for having chased some nonexistent snakes off the Emerald Isle), little else is popularly known about Saint Patrick. And yet, Patrick left behind a unique document, his Confession, which tells us much about both his life and his beliefs. This autobiography, originally written in the fifth century, and short by modern standards, is nonetheless a work that fascinates with its glimpse into the life of an intriguing man, and inspires with its testament of faith. Here, in this new edition from internationally acclaimed translator John Skinner, the character of Patrick, his era, and his world vividly come to life.
Also included in this volume is the only other document known to have been written by Patrick, a letter he wrote to the soldiers of Coroticus--also Christians--who had raided parts of Ireland and taken away prisoners who were then sold into slavery. This letter is a wonderful demonstration of Patrick's rhetorical fire. Quite irate, Patrick harangues his fellow Christians, and the results are every bit as autobiographically revealing as the Confession.
John O'Donohue, author of Anam Cara, provides an insightful foreword that re-creates the unique spirituality of Patrick and of the Irish people, and shows how it applies to our lives today.

Confession of St. Patrick.......2007-10-02
The book arrived in a timely manner and was in perfect condition.
As for the content, what can I say? St. Patrick is an inspiring man and these writings enable one to see real person. But at the same time, the writings also show the reason he became a saint. How many people do you know found God after being sold into slavery by Irish pirates?
Confession of St. Patrick.......2007-01-29
If you would love to get a picture of this great man,or you are Catholic like me,and want to learn a few of his writings.I say "read this book". His style is a little old fashon, but he was that. This is a good read ,and a short book check it out.
interesting work -- autobiographical, not autobiography.......2001-09-29
This is a very short book (81 pages long, 111 if you include the prefaces and the frontispiece, big print, easily fitting in your jacket pocket) and includes Patrick's Lorica -- the hymn known as the Deer's Cry or Faeth Fiada as well as The Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus (basically a public pillory of Coroticus) and St. Patrick's Confession.
If you are interested in buying The Confession because you want a straight-forward account of St. Patrick's life, you should be warned that it will not serve that purpose. If that is what you're looking for, I recommend you buy a biography instead. Given that the literary conventions for autobiographies had yet to be established, this work is much like St. Augustine's Confessions but more laconic and oblique. Apparently, it was written in defense of his character, having been recently defamed by his ecclesiastical competitors in England. As such, I think it would be best approached as an example of St. Patrick's theology. The editor has been very helpful in this regard by noting in the text every instance St. Patrick is quoting from the Bible. I'd estimate, on that basis, that quotes from, allusions to, the Bible account for around 40% of the text. Thus, if you want to understand the work, you probably want to read it with a Bible near so you can follow the thread of St. Patrick's argument/allusion. However, as you might imagine, this adds substantially to the amount of time required to digest the book.
I found A Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus much more accessible, which makes sense given its intended audience - the faithful of Ireland. It comprises about a fifth of the book and was very interesting to me, at least, as an example of the power of ideas, how they can be used to bind together a community which can then be wielded as a tool, and why, in the competition between the old or pagan meme with the Christian one, the Christian meme more or less prevailed.
"Deer's Cry" is only a few pages long, and not more than nice to have. It clearly illustrates, however, the difficulties John Skinner (the translator) notes of translating these works, namely the loss of the chiastic structure and overall prosody. This is a problem of translation in general, but I would wager that these works are particularly difficult in that regard. I trust the translation is good, but I thought prospective buyers who, like me, are unfamiliar with St. Patrick and his times should be made aware of these difficulties.
With the above in mind, I would recommend this book as an interesting primary source for the thinking, life and times of St. Patrick which, in places, are both beautiful and disturbing.
You'll read it over and over again.......2000-06-15
This charming little book is a great guide for anyone who wants to know the man who is St. Patrick. In this work, O'Donohue doesn't discuss the legends that surround Patrick but translates Patrick's own writings and adds an insightful commentary. The author offers a new examination of Patrick as he suggests that Patrick's hard-to-decipher language is not the result of Patrick's lack of learning, as Patrick and many of his commentators claim, but the result of Patrick's own brilliant mind trying to bring the message of the Gospel to the Celts in their own language. This book will take you directly to the heart of a simple saint who's witness to Christ changed the fate of Ireland and, consequently, the fate of the world.
