5 out of 5 stars Another Great ID Book.......2007-01-03

We have found this to be a great addition to our mushroom identification library, especially since it concentrates on fungi in our area -- no thumbing through pages of west coast mushrooms! Pictures are excellent, as well as the descriptions and identifying characteristics. And it isn't too heavy to lug around! I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Fungus-Viewer's Pal.......2006-08-02

This is a gorgeous book with BIG pictures which help in precisely identifying a found fungus. With the current wet, hot summer we've been having, mushrooms have been popping up overnight for weeks, and this book has been instrumental in letting us zero in on what we are seeing. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive regional reference, fabulous index.......2006-06-15

This is THE book on Northeastern Fungi. You probably don't want this for your first book on mycology, but if you have been studying mushrooms for a year or two and are looking for something a little meatier, this is a great choice.

The keys are comprehensive, and the index has the nice feature of listing mushrooms by their species epithet (the second half of the Latin name). This is particularly handy for finding fungi which have been moved from one genus to another.

Bessette includes plenty of microscopic details, though the keys do not generally require the use of a microscope or special chemicals.

The illustrations are really well done, with quite some attention paid to presenting diagnostic details in the photos. The illustrations and descriptive text are widely separated. I find this rather awkward, but this is only a bothersome quirk in an otherwise indispensible guide.

I do take this book into the field, but it is my primary reference for non-polypores in the lab.

4 out of 5 stars Encyclopaedic!.......2004-10-06

This book is really impressive in its coverage. The description are quite complete (although somewhat lacking a section on the details differentiating one mushroom to its similar cousins) and the text is generally well organised. The reason why I gave only four stars to this book is simple: pictures and textual descriptions are separated in different sections! I guess I am still dreaming about a complete guide showing important identification details with pictures and text.

3 out of 5 stars fairly comprehensive but hard to use. small pictures.......2004-08-29

this book has a wealth of information but it is organized poorly. the mushrooms are listed alphabetically with the pictures (which are ridiculously tiny) clumped incoveiniently at the end of each section. the annoying organization will have you flipping back and forth. don't expect alot of extra information on edibility or background info. get mushrooms demystified by dave aurora first or instead of.

1 out of 5 stars Do not, under any circumstances, buy this book........2007-09-07

This book misses one edible mushroom in particular that is of great interest to amateur hunters. Grifola frondosa is one of the world's best edibles and can grow to huge size. I am very surprised that an author with such prestigious honors missed it (although he did find a similar mushroom in the same group, the non-edible "Berekley's Polypore"). Grifola frondosa is common and widespread, and grows up to a huge size. To write about each of these other mushrooms, and not to have at least walked onto frondosa, is impossible. I suggest the Audubon guide, although the pictures aren't as nice, the black and white plates in the back can help identify the shape of a mushroom more clearly. To make up for the keys in this book, it is easy to scrounge around the net. (Keys help identify mushrooms even if you have no idea what they are.) Best of luck in your hunting.

5 out of 5 stars The best guide for northeastern North America.......2005-11-29

I love this book. Dr. Barron's field guide is filled with gorgeous photos and valuable information. There is no better field guide to the mushrooms of northeastern North America, and Dr. Barron has an incredible knack for describing mushrooms succinctly. Many, many species featured in this book are not featured in other field guides. "Mushrooms of Northeast North America" is a must for anyone interested in identifying mushrooms.

5 out of 5 stars Motivating - my favorite.......2005-11-11

I've had this book two years, and since that time have been hunting fungi to take pictures. They are interesting and make good subjects - and this book is motiviating with its beautiful photographs. A good 'guide' to read in the evening before going out the next day..

This is my favorite of a growing 'fungi guide' library, and the first I use when returning home from the field to look at my photos. [A bit tall for the pocket, but narrower than most field guides.] It does not cover everything I find, but neither do any of the others. You have to use multiple sources to get a feel for what you saw, and I now routinely collect a few specimens of the more common things I see to make spore prints to aid identification (but don't eat them!!). Being able to review your own photos helps. Different books have different pictures of the same species, and sometimes I think they look very different (not the same). That tells this newcomer to be even more wary of thinking I know what I'm looking at! Time and experience do make a difference, however, and as with any hobby one knows more as you go along. One thing I learned is to take a specimen of common things you find and make a spore print. This book sorts them that way.

I do like this book best for its treatment of edibles. It lists a dozen or so that are "easy" to recognize and not likely to confuse with dangerous species. Of course if you don't see one JUST like the picture AND matches the details of the description, beware. Other books may differ on the edibility of these, or even offer some that this book says to avoid. So one must start by assuming all specimens are dangerous. That whittles the amatuer's selection down to those half-dozen or so kinds that all the books agree on. Nothing wrong with that! as I've found several of these 'basic' edibles already (morels, black trumpet, inkycap, puffball).

I've recommended this book to friends, and now do so to you, too.

This is a great book with color photos of mushrooms of North east america.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages.......2004-10-20

I bought this book for my 3 year old niece, who lives in Maine where there is an amazing variety of mushrooms. My sister reported:

She absolutely loves her mushroom book. She took it to bed with her last night, and took it on our carriage trip today. She recognized the big mushroom immediately.

    Book Description

Washington, D.C., blessed with a rich historic heritage and gentle terrain, is also graced with an unusually wide-ranging and accessible network of bike trails. Anne Oman, a seasoned writer, cyclist, and local historian, is your guide to this bike-friendly city. The tours in this revised and updated second edition range from 7 to 70 miles and offer something for cyclists of every ability and taste. Oman steers riders around Capitol Hill and to Washington's incomparable museums and monuments along the Mall, as well as to many other attractions, including Embassy Row, historic Georgetown, miles of towpaths along the Potomac River, and natural areas such as the National Arboretum. She also includes tours to nearby historic and scenic areas: the little-known western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia and Maryland wineries, covered bridges, and Mount Vernon, to name but a few. And for more ambitious cyclists, a bonus tour offers a three-state, three-day ride to Harper's Ferry. As with every book in the 25 Bicycle Tours series, each chapter includes directions to the starting point, detailed maps, mile-by-mile directions, and information on local attractions and nearby bike shops.

If you have the funds I highly recommend the Becker Convisor program. After I purchased the set of Wiley books I ended up doing the Becker program instead and found that their programs and materials were vastly superior. There's little in the way of explanation in the Wiley series and what they do explain you will have to struggle through. However, it all comes down to what you can afford. Most firms will pay for all your review expenses (as did mine), but if you have to pay for it yourself and you are short on funds you might want to just struggle through Wiley and save a thousand bucks.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great format!.......2007-05-18

This little hardboard book from Krause Publications is both beautiful and useful (and how many of us can make that claim?) Clearly this is a book where each detail has been thoughtfully planned to make it useful for the stitcher.

The book covers both surface and canvas stitched and puts either one or two stitches per page. The stitches are photographed clearly and there is a large clear diagram directly below. The text contains instructions for the correct working of the stitch. At the bottom of each page there is some additional information. It provides alternate names for the stitch, a listing of suggested uses and notes which contains short tips for making this stitch look its best.

All the basic stitches are covered and the book is particularly deep on surface stitches, including some specialized techniques like hemstitching and drawn thread.

Just this is enough to make it a good book, but there are lots of wonderful little touches. First inside the hardboard cover is a ring binding, so the book lays flat, but the wire won't catch the threads. The size is small enough to make it easy to carry around and the covers are thick and sturdy.

Each stitch is numbered and they are grouped into categories. Each category, for example detached stitches, uses a different ground and thread color for the stitched examples and a different color of thread. The diagrams are done in colors to match the samples. Along the side there are pastel bars in the same color scheme. One the left page the bar says if these are stitches for canvas or fabric. The right bars tells the group of stitches.

Beyond the stitch collection, there is a long section on stitching practice. This section covers different stitching techniques (with small motifs to try as examples). design repeats and finishing. Each area is profusely illustrated and has clear explanations.

This book is one of the best overall embroidery books I've seen in a long time..

4 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of Everything.......2004-04-14

I've been reading a lot of books about adoption lately, and what I liked about this one was the questions. The Essential Adoption Handbook includes lists of questions to ask yourself, your spouse, the agency, a birth mother, a social worker, and then includes lists of questions that they're all likely to ask you. I thought that there was a lot of information packed into this little book, and that its resources section was informative. If you're considering adoption and you don't know what to read, I'd definitely put this book in your shopping cart!

5 out of 5 stars Great book to jump-start your adoption.......1998-05-20

I read this book at the very beginning of my adoption research and it was an enormous help. It covers domestic, open and int'l adoption and has a great reference section. By the time I finished reading it, it looked like an old phone book, full of highlighted paragraphs, underlines and notes in the margins! It is an excellent book if you are just beginning the process, and have no idea of where to begin. I was clueless when I bought it, and now I have a beautiful daughter from Russia and this book really helped me get there.

                            Book Description

What began as a simple letter--a mid-career architect's comments to a young writer--turned into a 32-year correspondence, by turns amusing, inflamed, and conciliatory. Frank Lloyd Wright and Lewis Mumford, two pivotal figures in 20th-century American architecture and urbanism, were both passionate writers, keenly aware of world events. Their 150 letters from 1926--1958 covered a wide range of topics, including Wright's position in the history of American architecture and contemporary practice, their friends and rivals, the invention and spread of the International Style, and political events in Europe and the US. A fallout over isolationist politics in the early 1940s led to a 10-year gap in their exchange, and when it resumed, the two were on an entirely different footing: Wright, the elder dean of American architecture at the height of his creative powers, and Mumford, an established critic in late middle age deeply committed to rebuilding a humanist outlook in the aftermath of World War II. Frank Lloyd Wright & Lewis Mumford offers an intimate look inside the minds and hearts of these two cultural giants, deepening our understanding of the men and the society they helped shape.

                                  Book Description

The threat of a Dutch invasion, the fear of challenges to the restored monarchy by supporters of the Interregnum regimes, and defiant Quakers were among the problems Sir Anthony Oldfield of Spalding had to face as a deputy lieutenant of the Lincolnshire militia. In the first decade of the Restoration the county militias were responsible for the internal defence of the realm and became the most important institution of local government. Oldfield's letters show in illuminating detail how the militia in England's second largest county was raised, trained, financed and deployed. As well as providing fascinating evidence about Restoration Lincolnshire, the letters enable an analysis to be made of the relations between the deputy lieutenants of a county militia and the Crown and Council. Letters illustrating Oldfield's other work in local government and his attempts to enforce the Restoration Church Settlement in Spalding are included in two appendices. Lists of deputy lieutenants and the Holland troops conclude the volume. PETER SEDDON is Lecturer in History, University of Nottingham.
