A Great Travel Companion for the Outdoor Enthusiest in Nova Scotia.......2007-03-30
In planning a trip to Nova Scotia (somewhere I have never been) I used this book extensively. We enjoy hiking, kayaking and general sight-seeing. This book not only provided information on outdoor activities but also on lodging, dining and driving as well as the history of the areas in Nova Scotia. It provides a wealth of information and made our stay much more enjoyable than if we just went there not knowing anything. We brought it along and it was a very important reference for us as we toured the province. I highly recommend it. After reading several travel books, this was the best one and the only one we took on our trip.
Adventure Guide Review.......2006-07-25
This book is excellent. What I particularly liked was that it mentioned small walks that can be taken in the areas that we visited, as well as archeological sites and wildlife viewing areas, all in my areas of interest.

Second Rate.......2004-08-07
This travel guide often misses important advice, and was misleading regarding some places, while it missed others. Example: p586 described Trout River Pond as one of the most scenic places on the continent for stillwater kayaking. It wasn't. You had to go four miles for it to start getting good. While there was much better kayaking in the same park. In other places it missed the largest hotels and failed to warn that summer almost requires reservations. So does the unreliable ferry. Newfoundland was among the best places I ever explored but the free book from the provinces tourist bureau was much more valuable.
Refreshing and informative.......2003-06-13
A couple of happy wanderers, Tim and Barbara Rogers, have a stack of travel books to their credit as high as a totem pole. As co-authors and on their own, they have covered such widespread locales as their New England homestead, the Galapagos Islands, African safari parks, Latin America and the rivers and seas of Europe.
Here, the peripatetic pair is back on the familiar turf of the first days of their marriage, when they explored the provinces on their honeymoon. "We've traveled much of the world together," writes the globetrotting duo in the book's introduction, "but no place on earth (as Canada's Atlantic Provinces) has constantly offered...so many adventures to broaden our repertoire of outdoor activities."
Meandering through New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, kayaking around an iceberg, running exhilarating rapids, or simply watching a family of moose grazing along a lazy river, the authors joyfully record the great natural beauty of this unspoiled land.
Jam-packed with useful information, the hefty volume (620 pages) has an easy-to-follow format with plenty of practical travel tips. Included are recommendations on where to stay and eat, plus detailed background on what to do and see, where and when. Whether you're looking for a cultural and eco-travel experience, wildlife-watching, fishing and camping sites, or merely a restful respite from a humdrum workaday world, the Rogers can guide you to a rewarding outdoors getaway.

The definitive guide to Atlantic Canada!.......2002-09-03
Although the 1st edition of this book was terrific, the second one is even better. We've used this guidebook to plan several trips to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and other Atlantic Canada destinations, and the authors' write-ups have steered us in the right direction each time. The book is well organized, with a comprehensive index, and coverage is detailed and well-written, with a touch of humor. We highly recommend it!
Stay away from this book.......2002-07-26
Awful. One of the most poorly organized travel guides I've ever been duped into buying. Restaurants and hotels are jumbled together for entire regions so as to be rendered useless (not that the reviews were useful anyway); I'd spend twenty minutes just trying to figure out where in the book Halifax was! There are, unbelievably, no city or town introductions whatsoever (you have no way of deciding where to go, which is the whole point of having a travel guide). Although there is some worthwhile information about campsites and kayaking, in general, the writing is uniformly poor, the judgments undiscriminating, and the information out of date. I threw it away to save car space. Don't make the same mistake as me.

Book Description
Beyond the glamour of the summer retreats and boathouses lining its major lakes, Ontario's famous Muskoka region still possesses a natural, rugged wildness that is rarely celebrated. In this wonderful large-format guidebook, well-known canoeist, wilderness advocate and author Hap Wilson explores the other Muskoka: from the Georgian Bay coast to the Algonquin highlands, through the vast stretches of forest, rivers and smaller lakes in between. Wilson covers canoeing, kayaking, hiking and cross-country skiing in Muskoka's best near-wilderness areas. Wilson's more than 80 hand-drawn, maps detail featured destinations. Soft eco-adventures combine easy daytrips with comfortable lodging. Hard eco-adventures put outdoor skills and endurance to the test, exchanging creature comforts for a more primitive experience.

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Book Description
The beekeeper's year begins with a late winter hive inspection and ends with "putting the bees to bed" in the autumn. Richard Bonney believes that each beekeeping activity should be performed with an eye toward the overall well-being of the colony, as part of an integrated year-round program of hive management. Long-term success in beekeeping can only be achieved by understanding the intimate lives, behaviors, and motivations of honey bees ; the factors which govern the life of each colony. Richard Bonney explains the reasons behind common practices that many beekeepers perform without really knowing why. He also stresses when to take timely actions that will prevent problems in future seasons. Hive Management offers concise, up-to-date information on the whole range of beekeeping tasks, including: ; How to prevent, control, and capture swarms. ; What you can tell from an outside inspection of your hives. ; When and how to "take the crop" and harvest honey. ; How to successfully requee

Bee Farmer.......2007-07-12
A good all round book.
The chapters lay it out for the reader, and if that reader is like me you will get a better understand of bees and their needs.
I suggest this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a few hives for the backyard BEFORE they do. Although bee keeping is a enjoyable passtime, there are things that need to be considered and this book will equip the reader with what they need to know. Good evening reading.
Awsome Book.......2007-03-14
This book is well written and laid out in a great way to make keeping bees easier to understand. Highly reccomend this one.
Nice general book.......2006-04-22
This is a very readable book - Bonney puts words together well. Not a "must have" in a beekeeper's library but a good general discussion of relevant topics. Assumes basic beekeeping knowledge. Overlaps with his beginner's book (Beekeeping: a Complete Guide); this would be aptly titled "Your Second Year as a Beekeeper."
This one is a keeper (pun intended)........1999-04-05
In the past year I have borrowed from the library all the books I could find about beekeeping . This is one I plan to add to my personal library.
Excellent, very informative, a must have reference.......1998-12-11

Great book!.......2004-07-23
This is a wonderful book for patients, doctors, family members, caregivers, or anyone wanting more information on what CFS/FMS really is and how to live with it and have a productive life. As a FMS patient, I strongly identified with the symptoms and feelings, and found the sample letters to my doctor, my family, my friends, extremely valid and able to put my feelings into perspective.
While it was hard for me to keep reading the "reality" that this disease has no cure -- (I face that in daily life too but it's easier to forget about it than when you're reading it every few pages!), it was important for me to realize that I'm not just "dreaming this up" -- nor am I "faking it". For years, I went undiagnosed, and had many doctor's tell me that it was "all in my head"....this book helps patients realize that these ARE real diseases that have not been given the proper "title" or validation by the CDC that they deserve.
This book was a great source of information and support for me and I highly recommended it to my doctor and to other FMS/CFS patients as well.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and Other Invisible.......2003-07-20
An excellent book, full of useful advice and support. As a Consultant Psychiatrist, I have been treating Chronic Fatigue Syndromes since 1982 and this is one of the best books on the subject, that I have ever read. I would thoroughly recommend this book to all sufferers and their relatives. The illness is extremely difficult to treat and is very frustrating for both the patient and also the therapist. However, books like this offer considerable hope and guidance.
Keep up ther good work.
Dr. Adrian Winbow, Consultant Psychiatrist
give this one to your doctor.......2003-06-27
This book is easy to read and understand. Research in areas of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia is severely underfunded, however, Ms. Berne does a wonderful job of relating the most recent findings; many of which dispel the notion that this is about being just a little tired. I highlighted the symptoms that I had in several of the lists in this book and gave it to my physician to keep which she did. I also just hand it to friends and family when they seem skeptical. It does the trick.
An Incredible Book.......2002-11-13
This is the fibromyalgia/cfs book that not only "tells it like it is," but also demonstrates how to live gracefully and positively with the uncertainty and pain of chronic illness. Read every word not only for comprehensive information on causal theories, symptoms, and research, but also for the author's insights as one who has been fighting the good fight for many years.
Chronic Enormously Complex Disease Syndrome.......2002-06-07
As a fan of Dr. Berne's first book, Running on Empty, I was delighted to find the same clear, accurate, scientific, and common sense approach to the disease the U.S. CDC has chosen to name "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" (but has been called Myalgic Encephalytis, or M.E, for 50 years outside the U.S.) and the condition that is all too often its companion, fibromyalgia. Someone not familiar with the disease may find the complexity described herein difficult to believe -- but it is absolutely accurate, based on good research and Dr. Berne's relationship with many patients with the diseases. This book of lists includes the full array of symptoms most patients have, along with currently suggested treatments, theories of its cause and nature, and above all compassion for those of us who suffer from it. It might frighten your relatives a bit, but they should see it. The same goes for any general practitioner who thinks this disease is just about "fatigue," which is comparable to looking at congestive heart failure as being mainly characterized by "fatigue." Buy it, send it to friends, relatives, TV stations, reporters, and of course, keep a copy for yourself. It's written in a style that you can read bit by bit -- which is, sad to say, how most of our minds work when afflicted by the illness. As Berne notes, the CDC admits that over half a milllion Americans suffer from this illness (a more recent demographic study states 800,000 victims) and only 10 percent have been diagnosed. Read this book, and then imagine how those people can possibly be living. Maybe with this book, someone in the media or in government will finally pay attention. Bravo again to Katrina Berne for a job well done.

Book Description
Widely recognized in his own time for extraordinary architectural achievements, Leon Battista Alberti continues to influence his field more than 500 years later. This full-scale study of Alberti provides a biographical account of the Italian Renaissance architect, new reconstructions and interpretations of some of his buildings, and a detailed discussion of each of his building projects.
Customer Reviews:
New York Review of Books.......2001-09-11
One learns an enormous amount about the buildings and the man from this beautiful book. Indeed it is the place to go for Alberti as master builder.
An impressive, learned book.......1999-03-03
Alberti's buildings were mostly left incomplete, altered, or unfinished by others, his original intentions often impenetrable. Tavernor goes further than previous scholars in untangling this confusion in his impressive, handsomely illustrated study. Though complex and learned, his book has a clarity and consistency of aim in its analysis of the process by which theory is related to architecture.
The best art book of the year.......1998-12-23
Robert Tavernor's On Alberti and the Art of Building is a book for which every student of Renaissance history in my young day would have sold his soul, for it presents this seminal theorist as an architect of rich intelligence and aesthetic sensibility, his excitement irresistibly infectious. With Tavernor's help we see through the alterations, false completions and unfinish of the buildings and comprehend Alberti's original intentions; reconstructions, models and photographs of astonishing documentary clarity support the exhilarating text. This book will no doubt pass unnoticed except by those few art historians whose imaginations were touched by Alberti when they first discovered him in Florence, Mantua and Rimini, and stood in awe of flawed perfection, but this monograph is, for me, the best art book of the year. Brian Sewell, Art Critic, London Evening Standard, 11 December 1998.

Book Description
De Re Aedificatoria, by Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472), was the first modern treatise on the theory and practice of architecture. Its importance for the subsequent history of architecture is incalculable, yet this is the first English translation based on the original, exceptionally eloquent Latin text on which Alberti's reputation as a theorist is founded.
Customer Reviews:
A must have Volume for any Architect or Town Planner........1998-10-03
The Ten Books of Architecture by Alberti, is one of the finest texts for the education of an Architect or Town Planner. Alberti's ideas are studied at almost very Architecture Program in the world. The Ten Books of Architecture describe how to design successfully, and how to design towns that are safe. Alberti expands on the work of Vitruvius. I would recommend this book for anyone who has an intrest in design. The text is very simple to understand. After reading these books, one will have a much clearer understanding of design.

Book Description
A study of the parallels between the humanistic principles of Renaissance architecture and the design of literary structures. "Highly original yet well founded historically: an important contribution to the scholarship of the Italian Renaissance."Alastair Fowler, University of Edinburgh In The Building in the Text, Roy Eriksen shows that Renaissance writers conceived of their texts in accordance with architectural principles. His approach opens the way to wide-ranging discussions of the structure and meaning of a variety of literary texts and also provides new insights into the famed architectural ekphrases of Alberti and Vasari. Analyzing such words as "plot," "topos," "fabrica," and "stanza," Eriksen discloses the fundamental spatial symmetries and complexities in the writings of Ariosto, Shakespeare, and Milton, among other major figures. Ultimately, his book uncovers and clarifies a tradition of literary architecture that is rooted in antiquity and based on correspondences regarded as ordering principles of the cosmos.
Eriksen's book will be of interest to art historians, historians of literature, and those concerned with the classical heritage, rhetoric, music, and architecture.
