Customer Reviews:
Bright, Authoritative Book.......2007-07-10
This book is commendable for its bright illustrations (I've never seen better), which are very helpful for plant identification. There is a page on "Freezing, Canning, & Drying," also a section of recipes. Of particular interest to berry gatherers and murder mystery writers is the section on poisonous berries.

Michelin Green Guide Atlantic Coast
Customer Reviews:
AKA Aquitaine.......2007-01-04
I enjoyed the usual comprehensive nature and detail of the Green Guides. I agree with other reviewers that the pictures, restaurant and hotel recommendations just don't belong. They make the book too heavy and these are not the traditional strengths of the GG. Except for pictures that's what the Red guides are for. Minus one star for fluff when they could have used the space for more maps.

Customer Reviews:
totally worthless.......2004-07-02
It always amazes me how some people have the ability to write a whole book with nothing to say. If you can make money using the techniques in this book please email me, as far as I'm concerned this book is only meant to promote their services. The second half of the book is surely meant to impress, not to teach. I hate these selling techniques: they even make us pay for their promotional material.
Pragmatic advise to those who can listen........2002-08-20
If one were to follow the advise in this book, they would be successful. The author leaves nothing to chance and is trying to teach the reader that he too must leave nothing to the whim of the market. The premise on which this excellent book is founded is to react to the market and not forecast it. As Jea Yu points out, it is harder to do than you might expect. The battleground is really the "baggage" that we all bring to the table - our ego's, our budget and most of all our bad judgment. This is a great book and teaches a winning style, if the trader has the discipline to follow it.
Outstanding. Read it again and again........2002-07-20
A novice should probably read that fluffy Toni Turner book to get an idea of the lingo, but no one should contemplate day trading without reading Lu. This book is a detailed description of the intricacies of no-nonsense, hardcore daytrading, written by a consistently successful practitioner.
I have read dozens of books on trading and this is the only one that I read again within one week of finishing it for the first time. It's simply too good to store on a shelf. Read it, learn from it, read it again, profit from it.
To use an old cliche, the small amount of money spent on this book will be the best investment you'll ever make. I'm not kidding. Read Toni Turner's sappy book if you must, if you're new to the game, but don't open an account until you read Jea Lu. His explanation of Level II screens, the use of stochastics and moving averages, and his advocacy of zero-emotion trading are all gems, which alone would be worth the price of the book.
I'm currently re-reading it, cover to cover, for the third time.
Add this to your arsenal.......2001-12-22
Books on day trading are everywhere! Hmm...is this book for you you ask? This book should be read by all beginner to intermediate traders. Many people think that they can find ONE book out there and read it and make $$$. It's not like that in this profession. Would you be a lawyer after reading one book, much less without a degree? So this book is a tool, and a good one at that. No fluff here, just the experiences of someone who trades. If you wake up and sit in front of your monitor from 7:30am to 4pm watching Nasdaq Level II screens and daily/intraday charts...they this book will help you. He shows you HIS experiences in the market. Like I said in my headline....add this to your arsenal of solid daytrading books.
One of the best books on day trading..........2001-12-04
Most who attempt day trading fail because they underestimate the learning curve, both in terms of the knowledge and capital it takes to succeed. The UndergroundTrader.com Guide to Electronic Trading, is recommended to those with at least some day trading experience, who are determined to survive the learning curve. Author Jea Yu is co-founder of UndergroundTrader.com, a popular Web site for day traders. "The secret to successful trading" he says, "is to know what to do when certain prices occur, and to let go of belief and prediction in order to focus more clearly on what is actually happening in the market."
The book's themes are the necessity for precise, objective methods of identifying and managing trades, the requirement for discipline, the importance of money management, and the powerful psychological factors that lead traders into self-defeating behavior. Charting indicators and studies such as moving averages, stochastics, and Fibonacci pivot points are detailed and illustrated, and the author does a superlative job of explaining the nuances of reading the Nasdaq Level 2 screen and how to track the ax and significant market makers. Execution methods and order routing are covered, as are as ways to exit trades in fast markets. Two days in the life of author-trader Yu are detailed minute-by-minute, trade-by-trade - and this section demonstrates and ties together the principles and techniques presented throughout the book.
Roll up your sleeves, for you will likely find this one of the best books on how to day trade with success.

Book Description
Planting in containers makes gardening available to everyone. Containers are as tempting to the owner of country acreage as to the city gardener whose "land" extends no further than a balcony or a windowsill. Full-color photos of container gardens and of plants suitable for pots make this one of our most beautiful, as well as unusual, guides.
Book Description
Learn how to brighten any window with colorful, attractive window boxes.

Gorgeous photos, packed with ideas.......2002-03-16
This is the second Tova Martin book I have purchased. There are so many beautiful photos that you won't even look at the text the first time through! Once you do, though, you'll find the text very informative on plant types and other wonderful tips.
Window boxes and container gardens are a must in our mountain community -- this book will give you terrific ideas for anywhere in the country, beachfront or Rocky Mts! Great coffee table book too.

About Solter's view on nursing...........2007-03-29
Some reviewers may disagree completely with the notion that a breastfeeding mother could absolutely love breastfeeding and at the same time want to control the nursing schedule and set limits on the child's access to nursing, but I am an example of exactly that kind of nursing mother. My son is 9 months and has been nursed full-time since birth. He never accepted a bottle so no one has ever fed him but myself directly from the breast, everyday of his life for the last 9 months and still going. He didn't start solids until 6 1/2 months and has only taken 1 solid feeding a day until now that he is 9 months and his appetite and curiosity for solid foods has really opened up. I LOVE nursing my son. I will always cherish the countless times we have sat quietly on my couch staring at each other while his little hand plays with my hair and my face. When he smiles in the middle of nursing my heart melts 100% But I don't feel that way when it is 3 am and I am 1/2 asleep. So I started early on to feed on a schedule and I am very happy that my son sleeps through the night (from 7:30pm to 5:30 am, nurse and back down until 7:30 am) He has done so since he was 2 months old, with some interruptions here and there due to teething, and after a few days we get back on track. I absolutely believe in feeding on a schedule. It makes life more predictable for me, and I believe for him also. My son also benefits very much from Solter's approach to cry as stress relief. He cries often when he is tired during the day and ready for a nap. he cries in my arms and starts closing his eyes and finally surrenders to sleep. Wakes up happy and smiling.
Some mothers may enjoy very much nursing 24 hrs a day, on-demand, but certainly not all of us do. Some of us like to do it in a more organized and predictable pattern.
Some mother may never wish to hear their babies cry, and prevent it at all costs. But some of us have learned that crying is sometimes inevitable, and really, not the end of the world, but just part of life, particularly a a baby's life.
A wonderful addition when you don't know what to do!.......2006-12-14
My first son just had issues- mostly with me being a new mom and him wanting his way. This book, although a little much for some, offered much needed help with how to help him learn to sleep WITH my help. Not just letting the baby cry, but to let them express themselves and it helped. I didn't give it a full five because as a nursing mother, I felt they were a little to much for me on that level.
Response to the 1 stars.......2005-12-20
The reviewers that gave this book one star, obviously did not read this book closely enough. You are suposed to respond to ALL your babies needs. Yes, even nursing for comfort! In fact the author states she got up in the middle of the night to nurse her children until they were at least two! Parental closeness is a need children have, that is why she advocates nursing, and co-sleeping, and baby wearing. On top of all of this, some children still get stressed out (I would bet all children), and frustrated, and the only way to express themsleves is to cry. If I need to have a good cry, they last thing I want is someone telling me to be quiet, yet this is exactly what we do to children. Solter helps us avoid causing pent up emotions by allowing our children to cry as they need to. Yes, before children can talk, crying is one of the only ways a child expresses needs. You figure out what cries mean. You try to meet the need, and if your child is still crying, most likely there is a NEED to cry.
I give this book four stars, because I think you do have to read it very closely, think about what you are reading, and practice it to truly understand how to apply these principles in your life. I feel a quick read could give you wrong ideas (it is obvious to me that one reviewer did not understand the overnursing concpet, and another reviewer missed the whole concept). This book really is common sense. It is loving and respectful. Children and families would be happier from living by its ideas.
Essential Reading.......2005-10-26
I wish that I had read this book before my first child was born. Solter's ideas would have saved us so much guilt and heartache. As the other reviewers have already stated, this book explains that sometimes babies and young children have a very strong need to release stress and emotions through crying. As a parent, I had always believed that crying was something to be avoided at all costs. I nursed on demand, carried my son everywhere, and kept him close by at night. He was always so fussy! Then as a two year old he was very aggressive toward other children even though we have always been gentle with him and modeled kindness and respect. Solter explains very clearly how fussiness and aggression can be avoided. She explains how to help your child sleep better by allowing them to work through their emotions instead of stifling them. I strongly dissagree with the reviewer that called this method cruel. Solter says again and again that we are not ever supposed to ignore our child's cries. But if, after making sure that all of the child's needs have been met, the child is still crying, we can be assured that crying is a ligitimate need as well. After working with this method and observing my son, who is now three, I have seen how much better he feels after crying. Sometimes he even seems to look for reasons to cry. When he's done he is happier for days. The Aware Baby is also a very important book. I have been recommending it to everyone who is having trouble with their baby because the message is so helpful. If you are a skeptic, check your local library first. But if you're like me, you'll be here buying your own copy soon.
Tears and Tantrums.......2005-02-25
I recommend this book to anyone who has ever been a child (not a typo!). Not only does it explain why babies and children cry, it shows us how we can support them in expressing their feelings. For those people who had their crying repressed in childhood and now have their own children, it is a revelation.
Babies and children are little people and they need to be respected as such. "It is important to know that children need the most love and attention when they act the least deserving of it".
Aletha Solter has written a book which will allow so many children to grow up as well rounded, healthy individuals, able to express themselves fully. It also gives scope for healing in adults too, "It is never too late to begin". I see it as a bright future for humankind.
I have gone from feeling inadequate as a parent to feeling I am doing the very best for our child. We have a very happy, alert baby who cries when he needs to, in our arms and with our love and full attention. It is very satisfying to see him drop of to sleep so peacefully and even sometimes with a smile!
Thank you Dr. Solter, I can see that one day what you have written about will be the advice parents are given. I just hope that day is soon.

The physical dimensions alone would be enough to make Churches, Judith Dupre's sumptuous chronology of Christian art and architecture, one of the most absorbing ways possible to learn about the world's most beautiful houses of worship. It is almost too big to fit in your lap, and each brilliantly colored page is almost three times the width of a human head. In addition, Churches offers floor plans, histories, and theological interpretations of almost 60 churches around the world, from the Pantheon in Rome to La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona to the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. Interspersed with these chapters are photographic essays on such topics as "Building a Gothic Cathedral" and "Ancient Paths: Contemporary Labyrinths." All of the images and essays are presented in a format accessible to the general reader. Those more broadly informed about architecture will be drawn to the interview with Swiss-Italian architect Mario Botta--his first in-depth interview published in English. In the end, the book's most amazing accomplishment is to provide readers with sensations that approximate both the grandeur and the intimacy of visiting the churches it depicts. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Humble or grand, wood or marble, churches have given physical shape to humanity's highest spiritual and artistic aspirations over the past twenty centuries. These structures not only stand as monuments to God, they also offer revealing testimony to humanity's immense potential and constant effort to understand, express, and honor the Divine.
Churches is a work of art that reflects the grandeur of its subject matter. In this compelling book, Judith DuprÉ, bestselling author of Skyscrapers and Bridges, presents an architectural tour of fifty-nine of the world's most enduring Christian churches, from such celebrated landmarks as St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple in Oak Park, Illinois., and Le Corbusier's Chapel at Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp, France, to lesser-known masterpieces, including Huialoha Congregational Church on Maui and the Church on the Water in Hokkaido, Japan. Special theme essays cover the earliest Christian churches, the construction of Gothic cathedrals, the evolution of the baptismal font, churches designed by contemporary artists, and the revival of meditative labyrinth walking. With stunning imagery, fascinating essays, and an innovative design, this book is rich with factual detail and beautiful photography presented in an inviting, browsable format. Ms. DuprÉ offers a nuanced portrait of each structure, blending its architectural history with a deep appreciation for art and a reverence for religious traditions. Encompassing houses of worship from six major Christian denominations and all corners of the earth, Churches is a powerful chronology of faith and achievement that will inspire anyone interested in architecture, art, travel, religion, or photography.
Customer Reviews:
Great photos of amazing churches.......2007-09-22
I am very glad I purchased this book.
There is a wide range of eras and styles covered, and the photos are superb. The architecture and artwork is the focus, but the author never loses sight of the fact that these are places of worship and sanctuary.
I was quite pleased that the book included an unusual Oriental church and a few others that were unconventional.
The only thing that kept it from getting 5 stars was that I wished it had included at least one old-fashioned country chapel/church (stone or wood/timbered) and also that it had included the ancient church at Brixworth (which, if my memory serves, was built in the 700's and is the oldest still-standing church in England)--it's beautiful as well as historic.
The perfect gift for a fan of architecture, history, and travel.......2006-11-10
I purchased this for my mom a couple of years ago. She loves to travel Europe, is interested in history and religion, and likes art and architecture. This book was the absolute perfect gift (if I do say so myself), and just so happens to be one I grab now and again whenever I visit my parents. Other "coffee table" books have come and gone, but this one constantly bobs back to the top of the proverbial stack.
The photography is wonderful, and the text descriptions are no slouch, either, offering a great historical perspective on each church and its locale. The variety of churches is quite admirable, as well, covering most continents and many denominations (christian and unitarian, just so you know...no mosques or temples here, unfortunately - but that would be a 500 page compendium, not this more specialized look).
For any afficionado of religion, art, or architecture, this book will be pored over and enjoyed quite vigorously. I can't recommend it enough.
Excellent book; excellent pictures.......2006-04-10
The pictures are great, and the recapitulation of the history that follows the construction of these structures is wonderful. This is no small book. The length is over 16 inches and the width is over 12 inches. Thus, the pictures featured here have greater impact on the reader than other books which display smaller images with details that are barely perceivable. The author must have known this to have made the size of this book an issue before the "print" phase came along.
Great Reference Material.......2005-10-21
Book has many fine pictures, and an innovative format, highlighting multiple photographers capturing a wide variety of Churches worldwide. Clear, hi-definitition pictures of one church are followed by archived material, giving a full range of historical impressions of these fine churches. Nearly a masterpiece.
Churches by Judith Dupre Fantastic.......2004-08-05
This is the most beautiful book I have ever seen. Having traveled throughout much of the world, I have seen many of these Churches in person. She writes about them in such an informing and interesting way, that I find myself enjoying many of them even more in the book than I did in person because of the in- depth background included in the book. The photography is fabulous. Frequently, we were not allowed to take pictures in the churches, so now we can have a lasting memory of some of our most treasured experiences. I could not believe how reasonably priced the book on Churches was. That book is easily worth $150.00. I have frequently paid much more and gotten much less. I also have her book on Bridges and that too is most interesting. I look forward to acquiring all her books.

Book Description
Modernism eschews historical references and ornament in favor of pure forms. In homes and furnishings, this translates into dramatic symmetrical compositions, geometric shapes, and a fondness for open spaces. San Francisco Modern is the first book to survey modernism as it is seen in many magnificent Bay Area residences. Graced with dramatic landscapes and light, San Francisco has inspired some of the world's most creative and influential architects and designers. It has also thoroughly embraced the modern aesthetic. In this richly illustrated tour of some of the Bay Area's most striking homes, author Zahid Sardar unveils 32 premier examples of modernist exteriors and interiors, from apartments on famed Russian Hill to spacious lofts in the funky South of Market district, and from new homes built in Oakland's fire-ravaged hills to stunning houses in the wine country. With a foreword by Mario Botta and an introduction discussing the origins of Bay Area modernism, San Francisco Modern is an impressive sourcebook of contemporary style, one to be embraced by architects and designers as well as home owners looking for inspiration.
Customer Reviews:
Real modern design.......2001-01-03
What a great book packed with pictures. The design is very modern and unconventional (read expensive). This is a very fun book to review. If you can't afford the architecture costs there are many ideas you can incorporate into a more typical home design.
Beautiful pix w lots of design ideas. Great Sonoma compound!.......1998-10-18
Coffee table book showing all the nicest spots in the Bay Area. The spread on the family compound in Sonoma is worth the price alone!

Book Description
For almost 30 years, the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa collaborated with the well-known Venetian cabinetmaker Saverio Anfodillo to construct his designs. The Craft of Architecture documents their work together and gives a survey of Scarpa's oeuvre, one of the most outstanding of the 20th century. This publication is informed and instigated by the MAK's 1999 acquisition of a number of design drawings from the cabinetmaker's archives. These include architectural illustrations for the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona, built 1956-1964, the Galleria Querini Stampalia in Venice, built in 1961-1963, and the Tomba Brion in San Vito di Altivole, built in 1970-1978; as well as furniture design sketches and wooden models of design details, some for a table for composer Luigi Nono. The Craft of Architecture presents for the first time plans, sketches, blueprints, and models from this collection, complemented by photographs of Scarpa's most important built projects.
Book Description
Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics is the newest book in the Universe architecture series. This volume presents the work of the Swiss-born architect who worked as an assistant to such architecture giants as Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn before starting his own firm in 1970 and achieving international fame. Botta' characteristic respect for topographical conditions and regional sensibilities, his deft craftsmanship and the importance of geometric order in his work are evidenced in thirty projects that range from smaller residential buildings to such grandiose projects as the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Jean Tinguely Museum and, most famously, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This detailed study also includes the designs he created for furniture and the stage. Mario Botta: Architectural Poetics is a thorough survey of the architectural and design work that launched Botta into the pantheon of modern architecture.
Customer Reviews:
The book IS a master-piece in itself!.......2002-10-06
Architects transcribe their thoughts and emotions through their designs, forms, and spaces. Botta is without a doubt
a master in his own right.
But what compelled me to write this review is the "text", the writing. The author of the book is a practicing architect who has worked along side Botta. She seems to really understand what lies at the heart of architecture in General and Botta's design philosophy in particular.
If you are a student of architecture READ this book.
If you love to contemplate beautiful creations READ this book. And finally if you are a fan of good writing I urge you to read this book!

Book Description
The recent works of the acclaimed Swiss architect are presented in this monograph on his world-renowned work and previously unpublished plans.
Mario Botta's buildings are characterized by simple, geometric shapes that juxtapose lightness and weight. This richly illustrated monograph examines Botta's most recent examples of this theme, as seen in the Kyobo Tower in Seoul, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Jean Tinguely Museum in Basel, and the Cymbalista Synagogue in Tel Aviv. Hundreds of photographs, sketches, and plans illustrate the architect's desire to create structures that adhere to and complement their locations, and show how his choice of materials emphasizes craftsmanship and geometric order. Botta's finished buildings are examined alongside plans which never saw completion, demonstrating the extraordinary creative process of this modern visionary.
Customer Reviews:
A handsome monograph documenting his most recent project in the past decade.......2005-12-23
Prestel's new monograph of renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta is aptly titled "Light and Gravity" and it is a collection of his select projects from 1993-2003. The title of this book refers to a recurring theme in his architecture where he designs volumes with compressive elements in masonry yet punctuates them skillfully so that light enters these volumes causing them to balance themselves out. This theme has been his signature theme for over the thirty years he has been in practice and is still timelessly beautiful today as it was back then. This monograph features some of his largest built projects such as the Kyobo Tower in Seoul, Korea as well as the simpler Central Bus Terminal in Lugano, Switzerland. Each projects are documented with well framed photos, project description and a composition of pencil sketches that capture the preliminary design phase. Over the thirty plus years he's been in practice. his strict modernist approach is still evident and despite the different masonry cladding he incorporates, it is still relevant to his theme of light and gravity.

86 projects copiously illustrated and concise.......2005-11-06
ISBN: 8425217180 is an exclusively black & white, concise and copiously illustrated paperback survey of 86 major works published in 1997 by Gustavo Gili (GG) of Barcelona in English and Spanish side by side on 256 pages, as a 4th edition. A short introductory part on several pages is followed by the main review part presenting each shortly described project in a combination of excellent B&W photos, plans, sections, elevations, hard line presentation drawings, sketches, etc. The book is ended with a biography, writings, list of works, etc. on several pages. Most of hundreds of only B&W illustrations are technical, but all (incl. B&W photos) are of a good quality, well balanced, crisp and legible. Like all from the Works and Projects series, it is solid among architectural monographs, but slightly smaller than the Studio Paperback series published by Birkhäuser Verlag under ISBN: 37643* (Basel)/08176* (Boston) or Artemis Verlag under ISBN: 37608* (Zürich)/18740* (London).
an overview on Botta's works in architecture mainly.......2000-12-17
The book gives an overview on Botta's works in the past, present and it lists some projects with their drawings and models that are proposed to be done in the future. The book is sufficient, in my opinion, to provide a basic understanding of Botta's philosophies and the way he handles architecture.
almost every information given in the book is given in three different languages. Hence, the book might be useful to some of those who don't use English.
There is a small gallery at the end of the book that illustrates some of the design work that Botta did outside architecture like furniture, vases, among others. the collection is informative. However, I wished I found a collection with larger photos and more details.
So, in general, I rate the book as a good reference and overview on Botta's works, especially architectural ones.
