5 out of 5 stars The Essential Guide.......2003-12-10

I spent a lot of time in Indonesia from '94 - '97. When I first arrived, I had nothing but I found a previously-enjoyed '91 edition in a Bukittingi bookstore. What really set it apart from the "other" guidebook company was the entertaining and tremendously informative prose. It was obvious that Bill really knew Indonesia in depth - this was not just a book for directions and place to sleep, but an immersive experience to curl up with at night and really learn about where your future rambling should take you!

I still have this book, and I do flip through it once in a while and reminisce......

The only thing to ask now is: what has Bill been up to lately? The last edition is '95 - ancient history by guidebook standards!

    2 out of 5 stars A Book to Avoid.......2003-11-14

While at first look this book may seem very well-written and detailed, describing many remote regions of Indonesia that other guidebooks ignore, much of the description of such remote places is obviously based on hearsay.
When visiting many of those remoter islands/regions during my 4 years around Indonesia, I very often found that the exciting attractions (like traditional architecture or traditional cultures) described by this book simply did not exist!
Having not been there himself, the author must just have made them up. :-)
While the background information on better-known parts of the country is more accurate and worth reading, the fact that many parts of this book don't seem to have been updated for decades further reduces its value.
So I would say that for background information the regional guides by Periplus are better, while for practical travel details get the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide.

    5 out of 5 stars You can't keep a good guide down.......2001-01-25

This is the best, funniest and most consistent guide to Indonesia. I remember on my first visit to Indonesia back in 92, the Handbook was still banned under Indonesian law. One day my wife and I were visiting the great temple at Borobodur, central Java, and we noticed the local guide was carrying a strapping guidebook in his hand. I surreptitiously noted the title, and later visited a bookshop to check it out. I was in for a surprise - the 'official' guidebook was none other than the illegal Indonesia Handbook: different publisher, title and a pseudonymous author, but the same book alright. If you like that kind of approach to a small problem of censorship, then you'll love this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A Backpacker Turned Expatriate.......2000-06-12

A Canadian friend got me to abandon my English teaching business in Madrid for the promise of an "oil patch" job in Indonesia in 1980. I can still hear him today "The first thing to get when you go through London, is get Dalton's Indonesian Handbook. Don't wait until Singapore or Jakarta - it's banned out there.

So this young man did indeed go east. The job my friend assured would be waiting was nationalized in the few months the intervened between our vinos in Madrid. "I hope you didn't come all this way just to work for..." read his letter I picked up Post Restante in Penang. Undeterred I managed to find another and better oil patch job. I spent the next three years working out of Jakarta and Balikpapan - Kalimantan's Jewel in the Jungle.

And I used the Indonesian Handbook extensively. Across Java, the lakes of Sumatra, Bali and Lombok and my favorite Indonesian destination: Tanta Toraja in central Sulawasi. (If you see just one thing on the archipelago, see Torajaland.) This backpacker, now a newly minted expatriate executive, always took the old black cover edition on his business trips.

So why do I like Dalton's book - and the Handbook travel series in general? I really appreciate the concise yet detailed "briefs" of key subjects. One small example . During a visit to Yogakakarta, I became interested in batik. A quick read of Dalton's brief two page "primer" I learned the history, fabric and style types. And I leaned a half a dozen key Indonesian terms. When I hit the market I was amazed at how well I could get the vendors' attention. Novice bargaining by Westerners is typically based on price. Savvy Asian peddlers know this. They usually display or direct a foreigner's attention to inferior goods. Experienced market hunters will talk quality first. The Handbook's brief's quickly got me up to speed fast - and got me some great batik pieces at great prices.

I often contrast the Moon Handbooks with more popular Lonely Planet series. Marketed as a "travel survival guide" that's exactly what LP guides are. But surviving is only the first phase in traveling. Perhaps that why the LP books have become the "backpackers bible." But if you are looking to do more than eat and sleep in Indonesia, give Dalton's Indonesian Handbook a try.

2 out of 5 stars Well written, beautiful photos, but lacks info.......1999-12-17

I bought this book in Jakarta, where I live, since I wanted an updated book for my business travels around Indonesia. There have been so many changes in this country during the past two years that you need the latest information. Bill Dalton ("Indonesia Handbook" etc. etc.) and Kal Muller (the "Passport Regional Guide" series, etc. etc.) have separately written some of the best guidebooks available on Indonesia. But I was disappointed with this one. Its beautiful, to be sure, with fantastic photos by Muller (many of which are found in this other books). Its a perfect bedtime companion, and a very good introduction to the complexity of cultures and sights in Indonesia. It will help you determinine where you want to go --- and don't you ever want to go after reading this book. But the book will not help you how to get there or where to stay. For instance: there are no hotels mentioned in Nusa Dua on Bali or any hotel outside of Mataram on Lombok, or outside of the major cities on Sumatra. And most hotel prices do not reflect the past two years drastic inflation. I would recommend travellers to Indonesia to wait for the next edition of Indonesia Handbook, or buy Muller's very detailed regional books (my favourites). But then again, the book is beautiful, so you might want to pick it up just to dream away about paradise.

    5 out of 5 stars Bali Handbook.......2003-10-23

Bill Dalton, internationally acclaimed American travel writer, tour leader, and founder of Moon Publications, wrote the bible of Balinese travel drawing on twenty-six years of Indonesian experience (thirty visits and a total of six years spent on the islands). Jam-packed with incredibly detailed information, the first 310 pages prepare you for the journey of a lifetime with chapters on the land (topography, environment, and climate), flora and fauna (domestic animals, birds, reptiles, sea life, endangered species, flowers, trees), history, government, the economy, and local industries. Dalton quenches your thirst for cultural knowledge with chapters on the people (the caste system, marriage, children, village life), the language (plus a glossary of words and short phrases in Bahasa Indonesia), and religion (priests, temples, cremation ceremonies). Balinese creativity is honored with additional units on traditional and modern art, crafts (woodcarving, maskmaking, stonecarving, textiles, plaiting and weaving, gold and silver works), music, and the performing arts (dance venues and schools and the wayang kulit shadow puppet theatre). Dalton gives you everything you ever wanted to know about Bali, from white raja Mads Lange to the toothfiling ceremony to shaggy Barong masks.
In the second half of the tome, Dalton treks you all around Bali, regency by regency, highlighting the important sights, beaches, nightlife, shopping, restaurants, recreation, transportation, and accommodation at all levels from homestays (the thrust is here) to luxury. Dalton leaves no Balinese stone unturned with his treatment of festivals and events, sports (snorkeling, surfing), health issues and concerns (including folk remedies), and visa/money practicalities. The depth and breadth of research is mindboggling, the reservoir of knowledge and amount of information is encyclopedic. Both travel guide extraordinaire and total reference book, this is an astonishing achievement: the travel parts may lose their currency (until the next edition), but the cultural course work/input is timeless. Dalton does not let you travel alone deaf, dumb, and blind-read him and you will not only see, but understand the Balinese universe pulsating all around you.

5 out of 5 stars BEST GUIDE BOOK EVER ON BALI!!!.......2002-09-24

Having been to this magical place 5 times now and perusing many travel books on this land. I would place this as the number one book of choice for the area. The background of history and the covrage on the people make this the best trvel tome for this destination. It will give you a solid foundation and a good idea on what to expect when you arrive there. Even if you do not end up going there you would save alot of bucks by just vicariously experiencing it theough the shear reading of it!!!

    Good Luck!!

If you do get there you must try the "soto ayam", the best chicken soup around; better than grandma's!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Bali Guide.......2000-06-13

I was so excited about my first trip to Bali that I used 4 guides. By far, the Moon Guide helped me most to understand Bali and the Balinese. I was even able to impress the cab drivers with my new found understanding of Balinese religion, culture and customs. Although I disagreed with many of the hotel and restaurant recommendations - the real reason for visiting Bali is to get in contact with a culture that exists nowhere else in the world. This book will help you do that better than any other. The section on quick indonesian language is very helpful and the Balinese love tourists who try to adopt their language greetings. The maps are mediocre, but there are no good maps of Bali - most roads are nameless and unsigned.

I was so impressed by Dalton's guide that I immediately looked for another moon guide for my next trip.

    3 out of 5 stars Great historical overview,terrible info./maps.......1999-11-10

This book made for a great read on the flight over. Being a history buff I really enjoyed it and it gave me a great sense of the place. But when I got to the island I found that the book was just about useless. I got lost all over the place, which for some is half the fun but not myself. People with the LP's-"southeast asia on a shoestring"fared much better than I at half the volume. I'm all for for making an effort at understanding the country you will visit, but a guidebook that can't guide me...

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bali Guide.......1999-05-03

I've read virtually every guide out there and Bill Dalton's Handbook is the most comprehensive and compact source of information on travel to and in Bali. If you are an armchair traveler in need of visual stimulation to spur the imagination, however, this book is not for you. Far apart from the Eyewitness/Knopf style high-gloss photography combined with very little travel info, this guide provides current, practical info on everything to do with Bali: history, geography, culture, places to go, how to go, when, where to eat.... You name it, it's in here. But if you're looking for full-color photos and a stunning layout, go elsewhere.

The word no has figured prominently in our popular culture in the past two decades. "Just say no." "What part of 'no' didn't you understand?" The idea is that no is easily understandable and always definite, as if all social interactions were as simple as that of a parent laying down the law for a child. But as any child quickly figures out, the word no usually means there was a flaw in negotiating strategies, and is only a temporary setback.

That's where Stephen Pollan steps in. As a financial and legal consultant, he coaches clients into favorable resolutions to their problems, whether they've been turned down for business loans, offered great jobs they have reservations about, or been fired from jobs they knew they were good at. In Turning No into Yes, he argues that the path from no to yes involves six steps: figure out the real problem; deal with just one problem at a time (often there are clusters of problems contributing to a rejection); focus on facts and put aside emotions; become an expert on the situation (in others words, know what people in your field make; why your superiors may have turned down your proposal; and who is really undermining your efforts behind the scenes); make sure the people you're dealing with really know and trust you; and, if it's still an issue after you've gone through those steps, get them to reverse their decision and tell you yes.

The beauty of Turning No into Yes is that Pollan and his cowriter, Mark Levine, use real-world examples to demonstrate every point they're making. We see partners in an art gallery work out a sticky ownership issue; an NBA basketball player learn to become a true businessman; an editor at a magazine get the raise he deserves. Somewhere in this book you'll recognize yourself as well as a situation you've found yourself in--or will soon find yourself in. And once you've read it, you'll want to keep it on your shelf for the day when the situation you never anticipated comes to pass. --Lou Schuler

      Book Description

At last, a single book that really can show how to solve your money problems and end worries about your business and career--better yet, a book that actually shows you how to turn adversity into success and how to get your own way even in "hopeless" situations. You'll find out how to locate the hidden problems, every unspoken no behind evry sort of money worry, and how to turn no into yes.

First, determine your problem. is the loan delayed because the banker doesn't like you, or beacuse your income statement doesn't show enough in the asset column?

Second, make sure you're dealing with one problem at a time. Don't try to rework your marketing at the same time that you trim your staff.

Third, focus on facts. Make sure that your own fears and worries aren't blinding you to the way things really are.

Fourth, become an expert. Immerse yourself in your problem; assemble all the information you need to understand your needs and wants, as well as those of your opposite number.

Fifth, create an environment of trust; and, if you need to, Turn no into yes.

The first part to Turning No into Yes is quick yet thorough course in Stephen M. Pollan's problem solving method, from problem identification through tuning no into yes. The second part includes literally hundreds of scenarios, showing how the method can be applied to a range of issues. It's like having a coach, strategist, and motivator at your beck and call, twenty-four hours a day!

4 out of 5 stars Good collection of chronic NO situations and techniques to handle them.......2007-10-14

Were you turned down for a loan, a salary hike, or a promotion? Don't worry. This book has lots of simple techniques to be adopted to turn a NO situation into a YES situation. Most of the examples/content was fettered to career and financial situations. However, some of the techniques can be applied to other situations as well.

If you are a gobbler, it would be hard to make most out of the book. Most of the concepts were conveyed through real life stories. If you miss the stories, you may miss important concepts.

In essence, you can use the simple checklist proposed by the authors to approach all problems - determine the problem, handle one problem at a time, focus on the facts, become an expert, create an environment of trust & turn NO into YES.

The size of the font in this text could have been bigger. Overall, I liked this book very much. I am now exhilarated to read "Die Broke" also :)

Turning No into Yes : Six Steps to Solving Your Financial Problems (So You Can Stop Worrying)
by Stephen M. Pollan, Mark Levine

This book demonstrates to the reader how you can look beyond your cash flow problem to the underlying issues, and then gives sound advice and principles in how to deal with those underlying issues.

In every case the path from no to yes is similar:
      1. Determine your problem. Is the loan delayed because the banker doesn't like you, or because your income statement doesn't show enough in the asset column?

      2. Make sure your dealing with one problem at a time. Don't try to rework your marketing at the same time that you trim your staff.

      3. Focus on facts, Make sure that your own fears and worries aren't blinding you to the way things really are.

      4. Become an expert. Immerse yourself in your problem; assemble all of the information you need to understand your needs and wants, as well as those of your opposite number.

      5. Create an environment of trust; and, if you need to, Turn NO Into YES.

Now that you know the secrets to the authors principle, you should invest in this book and read hundreds of scenarios , ahowing how this technique can be applied in your life, and eventually become a piece of your self-worth fabric.

This book is like having a motivator, coach, and strategist at your home all of the time.

Highly recommend this book, and suggest you put it in your financial literacy library today!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tool to solve financial problems.......2000-09-16

I bought this book because I was familiar with the authors (I had read their books Die Broke and Live Rich which helped me very much). In the first part of the book, They explain the six step-approach to solve financial problems.I was really looking for a book like this one. We face many kinds of money problems every day. In the past I bought books about logical decision making and none is more useful and well thought than this one. Parts 2,3,4,and 5 give examples on how to use the method. I recommend to read these parts; they can be consulted in the future if are not needed at this time. Also by reading them, the whole concept is better understood and practically the six steps are memorized. Please do not think that you need to behave robot-like and use the entire six steps every time you face a problem. In my opinion, this book teaches that We need to approach every financial problem as much rationally as We can.And The more We try to do it the better We are going to become at it.

      5 out of 5 stars Super Advice.......2000-02-02

The book gives you straight answers on how to face challenges, financial and otherwise, that come your way in life: on the job and at home. I liked the examples the authors used; they were vivid and real. Bottom line is solve the problems you face and take responsibility for your actions.

Recommend this book in conjunction with another book on self direction and leadership I use called: "The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills."

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Johnson taught me everything I know..........2007-01-05

Way, way back, before DIY and HGTV and do-it-yourself shows, there was Bruce Johnson. This book is a reissue of an older version of the book, and it's still as relevant today as when I first bought it.

I've refinished furniture (including antiques), refinished a room full of kitchen cabinets, redid all the woodwork in my house, all with this book as a guide. It's well written, simple enough for a beginner (as I was), and makes SENSE. Nothing silly or extraneous here. Just all good, solid information, written in an engaging style, and easy for the beginner to master.

I'm also now the Tung Oil Queen because of Bruce Johnson. It's simply his favorite finish, and mine, too (easy to apply, non plasticky like urethane, and it's a "living" finish; you rub it in, as many coats as you want, and it's easy to redo.)

Especially for the beginner, but even the expert can cull great tips and info from Bruce Johnson. I can't recommend this book highly enough, or Bruce Johnson, either!

        2 out of 5 stars Very Basic.......2006-11-10

No photo's to accompany text. Very cheaply put together as the paper that is used seems to be the type used in kindergarten class. Very dissapointing.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, But Too Gabby.......2005-09-20

I bought this book after reading the reviews on Amazon.com. While I found it helpful, I felt the author spent too much time writing about himself. Being a writer myself, I found the book too wordy. I want more direct information without all of the anecdotal stuff. Please get to the point! And while some of the points were good, many of my woodworking friends disagreed with some of the information.
I also bought "Finishes & Finishing Techniques" published by Taunton Press. It was a more expensive book, but I thought it was money better spent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Those of Us.......2005-09-02

Though most know her as the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of novels such as The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth, Edith Wharton was also something of a doyenne of domestic taste, and fortunately neither a nearsighted nor a parochial one. She published the first serious treatment of Italian garden architecture, Italian Villas and Their Gardens, in 1904. A lifelong Italophile as well as a lifelong gardener herself, Wharton had an instinctive attraction to both the clipped precision and the sensuous disarray that characterize an Italian villa garden. Nineteen of the gardens Wharton and her illustrator Maxfield Parrish brought to public attention are virtually unchanged by the passage of the single century since her descriptions were written. Garden photographer and writer Vivian Russell has recaptured both the essence of the gardens themselves and Wharton's experience of them in a series of luscious photographs and historical summaries of each garden. The Villa Cetinale, pictured on the cover from the vantage point of its lemon garden, was singled out by Wharton for its charm and its long green park, marked by a 15th-century gateway at one end and a romitorio, or hermitage, at the other.

The book's considerable charm lies in the historical perspective it affords of Wharton and her Victorian colleagues as well as the many centuries borne so gracefully by the beautiful land they loved. It's a marvelous homage to Wharton and a must-read for all lovers of things Italian.

            Book Description

One hundred years ago, Edith Wharton wrote of her love of Italy which was the first to treat the sub ject of Italian garden architecture seriously. It became a groundbreaking work that influenced a generation of garden writers and landscape architects. In this book, photographer Vivian Russell retraces Edith Wharton's steps to photo

I am a lucky owner of the 1904 original edition. I bought this reissue so that I could enjoy reading the text without worrying about damaging my 1904 edition. Comparing the two, the orignal's Parrish color and black & white illustrations are all there in the reissue. Please note that several were NOT color in the original too. The only difference is that the reissue has the color prints situated in a group in the center of the book, whereas (in the original) they are sprinkled throughout and have tissue paper protection. The color print quality is not as crisp as the original, but it is color. The b&w print quality is just as un-crisp as in the original.

I bought this book looking for Maxfield Parrish illustrations. I kept this book because Edith Warton is an incredibly soothing writer.

It should be of note that the text was so wonderfully written that it kept me from returning the book.

Imagine, however, what an incredible book this would be if the Parrish illustrations were not in black and white.

4 out of 5 stars intellectually stimulating garden history.......1998-09-13

I was very excited to find this book and nab a copy of it. (I'm a garden writer and I wanted to get Edith Wharton's perspective on garden history).

Italian gardens, as it turns out, are places for walking, thinking, conversing and relaxing. Their most common elements are paths, hedges, arcades, fountains, pools and grottos. They very seldom utilize color (a feature that is often ofterdone in American gardens), instead concentrating on foliage texture, stone and statuary. Usual plantings are trees, shrubs and vines.

What is most instructive is the layout of these Italian gardens, including the idea of garden rooms and the use of water features (both of which have become immensely popular here in the US, in the last few years). The architecture of the garden is everything, and is an extension of the house. Order, logic and function are paramount in the Italian garden.

Edith Wharton is a brilliant and fascinating guide; literary and historical references abound. A joy to read and to keep for reference.

                          Book Description

                          • The first book devoted exclusively to aromatic hydrosols--gentle, water-based plant extracts that expand the healing, cosmetic, and culinary applications of aromatherapy.

                          • The newest development in the field of aromatherapy.

                          • The homeopathic form of aromatic treatment that is the perfect complement to other forms of vibrational medicine.

                          • A comprehensive reference with more than 100 recipes and formulas for using hydrosols as well as sources of supply.

                          • With an introduction by Kurt Schnaubelt, author of Advanced Aromatherapy and Medical Aromatherapy.

Hydrosols is one of the most anticipated books in the world of holistic health because it introduces a revolutionary new use of essential oils in aromatic treatment. Hydrosols, or hydrolates, are the pure, water-based solutions created when essential oils are steam distilled. Through this process, a potent, yet subtle form of medicine is created, one that is able to be ingested as well as applied directly to the skin, unlike most pure essential oils. In fact, hydrosols are considered the homeopathic version of aromatherapy, and as such are ideal for use with children, animals, and those with fragile immune systems.

Suzanne Catty details the specifics of 67 hydrosols, provides formulas to treat more than 50 health concerns, and offers 40 delicious recipes in which hydrosols can be used. Her section on pets will help owners deal with urinary tract and digestive problems as well as grooming and odor issues. She also shows how hydrosols can be used with other forms of vibrational medicine and with feng shui, geomancy, and dowsing.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book to have!.......2006-11-10

This is the best collection of information about hydrosols on the market! I make lotions and oils for dogs and cats so learning about hydrosols is critical.

The author has easy to understand information about the history and process of making hydrosols. She includes concise information on specific scents and provides recipes for their use.

I'm going to use this book on a regular basis. Hydrosols: The Next Aromatherapy was strongly suggested in Kristen Leigh Bell's book, Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals (another great work).

5 out of 5 stars Definitive...a wonderful addition to my library.......2006-02-15

I purchased this book when it first came out. I thoroughly enjoyed it at that time, and have used it as a reference ever since. What so many do not realize is that different treatments (distillation vs. tincture vs. absolute vs. hydrosol, etc.) of a plant result in often VERY different properties comprising that substance. So finally having some insights into the properties of hydrosols, the water remaining from the distillation of a plant, is/was much needed. No other work like it had been available.

And what a revelation about many of them. Most people, even those working with essential oils and their cousins were not aware of what this or that hydrosol might do, let alone how to get their hands on it.

Really needed and really wonderful work!

4 out of 5 stars Good information source.......2005-05-23

Suzanne Catty says many folks believe they are allergic to scents, but scent allergies are usually owing to the impurity of the substance used. "If we used unpolluted, totally natural smells, the chances of negative health reactions would be dramatically reduced."Catty says she discovered hydrosols when she received a brochure from the Aromatic Plant Project initiated by Jeanne Rose and other pioneers. Catty thinks these substances are as effective as oils, tisanes, and other plant-based remedies.

HYDROSOLS: THE NEXT AROMA THERAPY includes a good deal of information about the beginning of the use of hydrosols and a discussion about water. Good clean water is in demand and growing scarcer every day. In years to come a growing share of the world's population will not have access to clean water. Because humans are 60-70 percent water, and totally dependent on the stuff, this is a crises. Catty suggests good water, in addition to being a life-source, can also be medicine when combined with plant substances.

A large section of the book discusses specific hydrosols, rthe water products which form as a by-product during essential oil production (i.e. healthful water derivatives). In a section entitled `The Monographs' Catty covers specific information discovered by researchers about the properties and some applications of hydrosols. Here Catty is concerned with the chemical makeup as well as various phases of hydrosol production. Temperature, filter quality and water source all play a role in the end product(production and storage).

In subsequent chapters she goes into more depth, covering uses of hydrosols: as compresses; sitz baths and regular baths; topical compresses such as masks, scrubs, and compresses; and shampoos, conditioners and rinses. She also considers hydrosols for oral use as tonics, eye-washes or douches.

I like Catty's matter-of-fact writing about these useful products. She also provides a list of sources in the appendix, including information about her own company 'Acqua Vita'.

                          5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking!.......2002-12-17

It's high time someone researched and explored the use of these healing waters. An excellent piece of work.

4 out of 5 stars Astounding contribution to the field of Aromatherapy.......2002-02-24

This book is the first of its kind to exclusively profile the use of hydrosols for phytoaromatherapy.and I expect it will revolutionize aromatherapy practice. Well written and researched, this book is based on Suzanne Catty's personal research. She has tried everything in this book, often on herself, and she speaks from well informed experience! I appreciate her honesty and candor. However, since the use of hydrosols (or hydrolates) is so new, often the reader is left with many questions, no fault of Ms. Catty, to be sure. What I would have appreciated was some sort of a chart or summary at the end that easily condensed much of the information in the book. As a healthcare professional and nationally certified Aromatherapist, I highly recommend this landmark achievement.

                            Book Description

In a career spanning forty years, Herman Hertzberger has focused on creating livable, workable spaces that not only make innovative use of otherwise banal urban landscapes, but also encourage their occupants to recreate these structures to fit their needs. This monograph is the most comprehensive to date of this highly influential Dutch architect, who turns seventy this year.

Herman Hertzberger: Articulations provides an exhaustive sampling of his buildings and projects, many of which have never been featured in book form, as well as writings and sketches from his notebooks. From schools and housing projects to offices and theaters, Hertzberger's concern for individuality, utility and sustainability in architecture have earned him an enthusiastic following especially among those interested in urban renewal. In words and pictures, this book offers a fascinating glimpse of Hertzberger's ideals and creative process, the problems he encounters, and his solutions.
