Wrong mileage.......2006-09-08

I used this book for my travel to Saudi Arabia following the footsteps of Nassir Khusraw, the Persian poet and philosopher who went to Mecca in 1045. According to this book the distance between Medina to Jeddah and Mecca is 390 and 410, respectively. Nassir Khusraw in his "Safarnameh" says the distance between Medina and Mecca is 100 Farsang (about 600 kilometer). I was wondering why he overstimates the distance. In my book, then I added a paragraph explaining the reasons and theorizing that he might have travelled a longer route, due to dangers on the road and search for water. He was always correct in his estimation of the distance between many cities he travelled. Then I found out about MSN Encarta World Atlas. I typed the name of these cities and found out the distance was 629 and 605 kilometer, respectively.
Well done Nassir Khusraw a millenium ago! and Mr. Robison, correct this big mistake as soon as possible. The book has little practical use as far as Mecca and Medina is concerned

Garbage Book.......2000-06-29

First of all this Iranian guy is correct. The official name of this body of water is PERSIAN Gulf. The term Arabian Gulf was invented in 1970s by some Pan Arabists who failed to show up at their geography classes. The author's use of this term shows simply his arrogance and fact that he does not know the region nor its people. By using "Arabian Gulf" he simply wants to impress ignorant Arabs into buying his book.

Other than that his book is useless as it does not touch on the cultural aspects on the region.

Having just returned from a 5 week trip through Oman, UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain I can say that Lonely Planet has again produced an accurate and useful guide. And despite the fact that it is several years old, prices and descriptions were still right. The guide's advice to try to get to the Musandem Peninsula in Oman was a fine piece of advice--it is amazingly beautiful.

And to the person who gave one star to this guide because of it's reference to the "Arabian Gulf": relax. If you say "Persian Gulf" to anyone in the Arab Gulf states they will have no idea what body of water you are talking about. I suppose you would be equally upset if 25 years ago a guidebook to China refered to the capital as "Beijing" instead of the Western imposed name "Peking"?

It's the PERSIAN Gulf not the "Arabian" Gulf.......2000-01-03

The book makes repeated references to the "Arabian Gulf" - but there is no such thing. There is an Arabian Sea, and a Gulf of Oman, and the PERSIAN Gulf, but no "Arabian Gulf" exists. The Persian Gulf is the official name of that body of water, and has been known by that name since ancient times. Even the ancient Greeks referred to it by its correct name. One has to wonder, if Lonely Planet is so willing to pander to the Arab governments of the PERSIAN gulf in this manner by renaming the PERSIAN Gulf, then how accurate can their travelogues really be?

Very practical, essential reference.......1998-09-29

This is an essential reference for any tourist, traveller or expatriate relocating to the Arab Gulf states.

The book's information and advice enable a new-comer to develop a sense for local atmospherics and sensitivities so one adapt, integrate and thrive in the host country culture and in the supportive expatriate communities.

Good coverage of cultural, commercial and logistical (i.e., "Where can I find...?") details.

Highly recommended. Written with imagination, humor, and attention to detail.

FWIW, the earlier (1993) edition of this book I used when I was in the United Arab Emirates and Oman in 1995 was 100% accurate. The maps and guides to local services in the smaller cities were exceptionally helpful.

An impressively well-researched and high-quality work, as is typical of Lonely Planet Press titles.

My husband originally bought this book, and then I read and re-read it. We have 2 sons, (10 & 12 yrs old). This book REALLY helped us to set up a program for spending and saving with our sons. I like the way is is simply laid out. I would highly recommend any parent who is interested in learning more and getting help on how to set-up the whole money thing to get this book...better earlier than later! Be patient, it does work...it just takes time and persisitence.

User-friendly and useful.......2007-02-09

We all spend a lot of time talking about how to instill proper financial values in our children. This book gives you step-by-step advice on how to make that "talk" reality. The sections on how to use the world as your financial classroom and how to instill your personal values through consumerism were perfect for our young children. Perhaps the best part of the book is that it is written in an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand style. Anyone reading this book will be able to use and implement these ideas.

This is an excellent overall guide book for anyone serious about elevating their woodworking skills through the use of the band saw. The book is chock full of of excellent tips and suggestions with plenty of photos. A great addition to your knowledge base.

Mostly the same old tricks and tips- although I did get probably $4 worth of tips. I would have rather spent the money on a magazine subscription.

I already owned Lonnie Bird's and Mak Duginske's books... Sincerely I purchased this because it was coming with a good offer, but on a retrospective I must say that it adds good information to the other books I already owned.
There is not any "purchasing guide" section (I think the best book with such an information is Lonnie Bird's), so it's a book for who already owns and is happy with his bandsaw.
Information are very straightforward, not much talk but many well made pictures with explanatory captions.

There are great information on self construction of a rip fence (including setting it up for blade drift), mitre gauge table (if your saw doesn't have one of those), increasing table size and various other nice jigs for various operations.
It contains a good deal of information on bandsaw joinery, like mortise and tenons (yes, it is the only book where a nice mortising jig, of course for your router, is described), dovetails, lap joints.
Also, template cutting with a bandsaw.
Other techniques on how to lumberize logs, resawing and veneering, also "related" subjects with suggestions on what to do with cut veneers jigs to trim them to precise edges...

It's a book that doesn't take the bandsaw as a stand alone tool but with the interactions with other woodworking tools, ways to make of it the core of your workshop or at least value it to its full potentials.
Also "advanced" techniques, such as building a 3d puzzle, a bowl (I didn't know you could make a bowl with a bandsaw...)

Nice projects are included, I found particularly nice the cabriolet legs-table projects...
Little information on blades (where Duginske's shines), guides (Bird's), but the book has probably a different aim. Bandsaw tune-up is on the other side well done (not nearly well though as Duginske's), with a few nice suggestions.
All with nice pictures and "hot tips" for practical how-to ideas.
All in all I recommend purchasing the book, well, maybe with one of the two other books I mentioned.

Indoor Gardening.......2001-08-12

This is a great book for the novice and good for the intermediate grower. It is in a large format with a lot of pictures. As the name says, it is a step by step guide to indoor gardening. . I would consider myself and intermediate grower (I can spot diease and pests and can start a plant from seed and I rarely loose a plant) and I found this book helpful.

It walks the beginner through choosing a health plant. It also discusses types of pots and how to use them and soil mixtures and how to use them. It has a discussions on light and how to use it effectively, how to water properly, feeding (and topdressing), grooming, pests and many more topics. It has a very nice section on herbs. It shows how to grow your herbs inside from seed. It also has a nice bit on drying & freezing your fresh herbs. There is a section on the sunroom garden, growing orchids and bonsai. It is a good introduction to orchids and bonsai, but the serious planter will want to buy a book entirely on the subject or even take a hands on course from a local greenhouse. And there is the section called Houseplant Selections, which is a pictorial of the most popular houseplant. It is a good starting point for identifying your plants. This book wonýt hold any surprises for the experienced person, but as with all books, you are bound to find some tid-bit that you didnýt know.

I found this book to be very helpful. It's so easy to over-manage our children and in the long-term not help them mature. This book gave solid examples and helps parents to stay grounded. I recommend it frequently.

I first became a Howard Brodie fan after seeing several of his WW II drawings along the walls of the Pentagon. I then started research on him and found several issues of Yank with his work. Shifting States in Global Markets contributes to the debates over the political economy of globalization by focusing attention on the increasingly important role of subnational governments in implementing economic policies. Challenging the view that the effects of decentralization are positive or negative uniformly and can be explained by reference to the influence of national political institutions, Alfred Montero uses his comparisons of industrial policy in Brazil and Spain, and between different regions in these countries, to argue that we need to pay attention to political conditions at the subnational level to account for the variation in economic success between regions.

Two crucial conditions are emphasized in Montero's analysis: how much competition there is among political elites within any region, and how much competition there is between regions for scarce fiscal resources. Lower competition among elites leads to subnational governments' delegating more autonomy to public agencies to develop ties with private businesses favoring allocative efficiency and innovation; higher competition between regions provides incentives for political leaders to support involvement in economic development efforts by a greater variety of public agencies, whose cooperation and mutual trust over time create the conditions for long-term success in these efforts. This analysis gives us a much more nuanced understanding of how countries are experiencing the challenges of globalization today.

I'm single, but I am interested in finance. I'm also trying to decide if the grass is greener as a married female rather than as an unattached 30-something. Money is at the root of many marital problems.

I found this book to be very informative - for singles and couples. This is not a "relationship" book. It is not touchy feely. It's not a book that talks about the "holiness" of marriage. It's not a how-to-get-rich-quickly book nor a book for the rich. It's just a well written, easy-to-read book about budgeting (including for taxes) and working with a partner to make good financial planning. I've made copies of a couple of the charts and lists in this book because they're very useful for filling in.

Sections I liked in this book were: 1) creating a realistic budget, particularly the chart and how it accounts for two incomes, two sets of expenses and taxes, etc., 2) working out how many accounts (chequing, savings, etc.) a couple may need, who will pay the bills, and from what account the money will come from, 3) getting tax slips and insurance papers in order, 4) maximizing health benefits when both partners work, and 5) financial do's and don'ts concerning cohabitation.

I have decided to make this book the present I will give to couples for weddings and engagement parties. It might even save some couples from major relationship problems later on.

I know reading my copy will make me approach any marriage proposal with more realistic expectations about compatibility.

I found the book to be attractively put together and full of examples. They address both manufacturing and non-manufacturing environments - including service industries. Managerial Accounting is a vital tool for businesses as it provides techniques for making better business decisions based on data instead of "hunches". Nonetheless, the material can be difficult to get through. The authors understand this and use real-life examples to help give insight as to the way businesses use these analysis techniques. Because the material can be challenging, I can understand some people finding the material boring. However, given the type of material, I feel the authors have done a commendable job in communicating the material in an appealing way.

Reading through this book is a BORE! :( Examples are almost non-existant, there's like nothing (like definitions) on the sides of the pages, and no glossary. How poorly written! Please find an alternative to learn this rather interesting subject. Thank you!

Disappointing.......2001-05-01

Having previously read "Fundamental Financial Accounting Concepts" by the same people, this book was a disappointment. It came off as incredibly dry, and was not all that clear in its presentation of the concepts. The "Fundamental Financial Accounting" volume is great, but I'd recommend another author for the managerial book.
