    5 out of 5 stars A Pilgrimage, Of Sorts.......2006-02-11

This book describes the journey that the author and his wife took together from their home in New York City to distant Arabia in the 1920s. At the beginning of the book, Seabrook describes some of his motivations for making the trip. He tells us that he had always been fascinated with Arabia, ever since he was a child. He also provides us with perhaps the best definition of simple tourism I have ever encountered, "I went for no useful, moral, scholarly, political humanitarian, or reasonable purpose whatsoever. I went for the joy of it, and because I believed I should love it." As we read further, however, it begins to become clear that perhaps Seabrook did have an ulterior motive after all. Whether by design or by fate, Seabrook's itinerary took him from one religious leader to another. Even when the persons he was staying with were not known primarily for their religious leadership, Seabrook constantly plied them with questions about their faith. He was a seeker, on a pilgrimage to learn all he could from the great variety of men of faith in the Middle East.

Seabrook rode with the Bedouins in the desert, and visited with the Druses in the mountains of Syria. He plied a Sufi sheikh with a thousand questions, and then went on to be a guest of the Yezidees, a tribe of devil-worshipers. Seabrook was primed for adventure, and had learned enough Arabic before his trip to get by without a translator. He was passionate about religious discussion, and open to trying new customs, including even reciting the Muslim prayer which serves to indicate adoption of the faith. In doing so, he had thus converted to Islam, although there is little in the remainder of the book to demonstrate that he had been serious about this undertaking. Later in the book, he interviews the Sufi Sheikh el Melewi and hears the answer he had perhaps been seeking, "No words, my son, can impart from one man to another the final secret. For God is the divine harmony in all things-in the circling of the earth and stars, in the measured heart-beats of the human body, in the rhythmic act of procreation; in fire and water, in the rolling thunder and rushing winds; in the flight and songs of birds or tiniest insects; in the breath of life itself as the air is drawn into the lungs and expelled through the nostrils. All paths can lead to God, and each must choose the one seeming best for him."

The book is illustrated with numerous pen-and-ink drawings, supplemented by several sections of black-and-white plates. In addition to Seabrook's musings on religious topics, he also describes the customs of the tribes he visited with, many of which have changed greatly since his time. The book provides a fascinating window into a time and place that have passed almost entirely from memory.

5 out of 5 stars Story of adventure, beauty, friendship and faiths.......2000-12-20

This book does not simply report, it enlightens. Seabrook is a skillful author who masterfully relates the culture of the Arabian people he befriends. He tells dozens of fascinating stories, which he learns from his honorable hosts (I particularly enjoyed the tale of Gutne's eyes). The condition and station of women is written about, and the reasons for different cultural practices, such as honor killings in the Druse culture, are examined. Rather than judging these people and presenting women's oppression as an element of a less advanced culture, Seabrook objectively writes the views that his new comrades present. Certain practices begin to make sense as the reasons different cultures adopted them are made clear. While I could not possibly condone killing someone for marrying outside of one's own race, I could begin to understand the historical context that fostered the idea. Seabrook also writes about modesty, methods of cleanliness, medicinal practices, and what is eaten. Fermented goat's milk and rice are standard fare. The description of feminine beauty and dress in this story are simply unparalleled. "A two-year-old baby daughter was like a little doll or a princess from some fairy-tale. Her eyelids were blackened with kohl; her face was painted, delicately and with art; her hair was twined with bright coins and jewels; her finger-tips were stained pink with henna like the rosy dawn." Another attribute of this book is its approach to religion. Seabrook seeks out as many truths as the religious sects are willing to release. He writes about the rumors he hears, the holy men he meets, the interpretations his traveling partners offer, and the ceremonies he witnesses. In the end, I was left with the impression that we all share the same God, and Seabrook makes this argument without forcing it down the reader's throat. This was a splendid, engaging read, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderous journey of spiritual discovery. Unforgettable........1998-07-20

The first time I read this book I was stunned by its beauty and power. I held off re-reading it for a decade to preserve the impact of reading it anew. It is a marvellous travelogue of one man's journey into the hospitality and culture of the desert, and a revelation of religious discovery which mocks all intolerance. Well worth reading and cherishing.

                    Book Description

"We thought we'd break those chains at last," sang the slaves, hoping such spirituals would sustain them until the Confederacy surrendered and slavery was gone forever. During the Civil War, blacks served in the Union army and navy (although some fought for the South) and in Union-controlled camps, which harbored fleeing slaves. Not all slaves escaped, but even those who remained with their masters began to imagine a new life. After the war, amendments to the Constitution abolished slavery, granted citizenship to freed people, and gave African-American men the right to vote. Freedom, blacks hoped, would also mean political equality and economic well-being. Some moved from rural areas to cities in the South or North; others looked to the West, where many African-American men became farmers or found work as cattle-drive cooks and cowboys. But many whites viewed freedom for African Americans as a threat, and they responded by establishing white supremacy organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. Organized violence against blacks, along with poor agricultural conditions, discrimination, and worsening economic times, guaranteed poverty for most Southern blacks. Although the tightly knit slave communities on the larger plantations began to disperse, a sense of having shared interests and goals actually widened freed people's vision of the meaning of community. Despite fierce white opposition, African Americans established their own churches, schools, and other associations and began to participate actively in government. Break Those Chains at Last tells the story of these turbulent and complicated years, as African Americans created the communities and organizations that survive to this day.

                          Book Description

This is a true story about my lifelong battle- and victory- over a rare genetic bone disorder. Osteogenisis Imperfecta left my bones brittle and my body fragile. As a child I suffered hundreds of fractures. The story details the early years of hospital visits, pain and loneliness. However the uplifting events of encouragement, which helped me through those difficult times, times when even doctors thought I would not survive, are also illustrated. I write about the joy and the despair of growing up with a disability, a unique perspective of life for both the able-bodied and the physically challenged. Eventually I would rise above the broken bones and prejudice, attend college, earn my degree in Social Work, and help others in need. Colorful, loving profiles of family and friends, as well as episodes of romance, laughter and heartbreak are sprinkled through out the book, ultimately reaching a powerful climax of hope, inspiration and achievement. THOSE ARE THE BREAKS is a tale of a breakable body- with a very unbreakable spirit.

From the supplier: It is not necessary to turn eggs while they are in an incubator. Chickens and ducks do not turn their eggs while sitting on them, so there no reason they would have to be turned in the incubator either. Turning can actually damage the amniotic sac that the unborn chick needs to live.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2007-07-23

I have been cross-stitching for many years but wanted this book to learn how to use the new threads and materials that were coming out and I was not disappointed. It answered my questions on using beads and embellishments, on how to use the new linen threads and it helped me brush up on techniques I hadn't used in a long time like "railroading" my threads while stitching. Highly informative and easy to understand for everybody. Would be invaluable for a novice stitcher!

                                        5 out of 5 stars Love it...........2007-06-11

I have not read the whole book as of yet??? But so far I am really pleased with this product. It is colorful, easy to understand..and the perfect size to keep in my cross stitching bag.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginner or advanced cross-stitcher.......2007-05-14

I have done cross stitching for years and still learned alot of interesting things from this book. Would also be great for first time beginners.

3 out of 5 stars Fine for beginners.......2006-11-11

This book is fine for beginners but doesn't have a lot of tips for an accomplished stitcher. The charts are not very attractive.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for counted thread enthusiasts.......2006-01-12

Don't be fooled into thinking this is just a cross-stitch guide, though much of the discussion is about cross stitch. Counted thread work of all kinds are included in this book. It's wonderful!

If you love counted cross stitch, Hardangar, etc., this book is for you. Clear pictures and easy-to-understand descriptions of the stitches demonstrated make it a reference book of value. The reviews of different types of fabric and stitching fibers is an added joy. The design types are wonderful.

Don't hesitate to get this marvelous book, you'll be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars Projects Projects and More Projects.......2007-10-02

When I have time to stitch...this is one book I'll be using. Maybe not everything works for me, but it builds nicely from the Cross Stitchers Bible.

Very nice projects and motifs but I haven't made anything from here yet. They do seem a little overwhelming for someone who doesn't stitch all the time, but the book itself is very nicely put together and provides detailed instructions and hints & tips.

In certain circles, Jane Greenhoff is considered common, but for an intermediate beginner to intermediate stitcher the projects seem well prepared and thought out.

I also have her stitch software, which is ok.

but the projects in it are not what I would stitch...I have found better books than this one, although it does have a nice layout.

I've done embroidery since I was a young girl - that's over 25 years now. I only started cross stitching less than a year ago, so I was eager to find a book that put everything I need to know in one place. That's what this book does.

There are easy, step-by-step drawings and photographs that cover not only every conceivable stitch, but other cross stitch techniques, fabric choices, color choices, reading a chart...anything you could need to know.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Superb Guide.......2002-10-24

As far as cross stitch references go, this one deserves 5 stars! In the first two chapters it answers every question a x-stitch beginner might think of, from comparing and choosing fabrics to the equipment needed and how to use charts. The third chapter offers endless ideas and tips on how to further develop this skill. I particularly liked the combination of x-stitch with other embroidery techniques, incorporating beads, buttons embellishments in the x-stitched piece and the ways to adapt existing chart designs to create a more personalized piece of art. I consider myself an experienced stitcher but still find myself referring often to this book. Its compact size also makes it easy to carry around.

I happened on this book in my public library and I now need to own it! It is simply crammed with very clear instructions and photographs on all aspects of cross stitch. My favorite thing about this book is that it helps you go beyond just counted cross stitch in other counted thread techniques. She doesn't have the space to go into detail about these other techniques (Hardanger, drawn thread, etc), but enough information is given to let you choose if you want more details.

This book is also simply well-written. While it is meant to be a reference book, I have been known to simly sit down and read it from cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and a Must own for stitchers.......2001-06-08

                                        Deserves 10 STARS.

Literally everything anyone interested in classy information about all aspects of counted cross stitch with a bounty of crips clean photographs, would need. Page 52 EXPLORING CHOICES Using Charms Buttons and Embellishments is worth the price of the book alone.

Getting Started Using Charts Choosing-Managing Threads, working with linen (my favorite), stitching miniatures, three demensional cross stitch, double and single canvas, combining flower thread and cotton, metallic thread, using beads, designing samplers, and page 83 which lists a STITCH LIBRARY which is basically every know stitch with step by step wonderfully photographed examples. And finally finishing techniques like stretching and framing.

I am an avid self design counted cross stitch artist and am always looking for well written and well photographed information on linen and thread design and this book has become one of my top 3 favorites that will be used a great deal.

The book, along with a few items for making the Ark and its Creatures on page 53 would make a great gift for someone who will quickly get hooked on needlework.

Peter J. Hatch, head of gardening at Thomas Jefferson's beloved plantation, Monticello, offers an authorative and edifying look at the orchards and fruits grown historically and today at this beautiful Virginia estate. With much information -- both historical and practical -- the reader is taught much. And has a unique opportunity to know better not just Thomas Jefferson, the man and statesman, but Thomas Jefferson the consummate gardener.Beautifully photographed and illustrated, it's an elegant addition to any gardener's coffee table or library. And for the serious fruit grower or Monticello afficionado, a must.

I agree with the reviewer (K.H.L) who commented on putting the blame on us as parents, but I do see areas where I did contribute to my daughter's lack of motivation. I found this book very disappointing because almost all of the focus is on wrong ways to motivate. Several examples are used for each wrong way, and only one example given for success. This book is less about helping your student become successful, and more about what you are doing wrong.

This book helped me tremendously. I recommend it to anyone with children. The context is right on track and it's easy to read. As soon as I started reading it, I made changes to my behavior. This had a direct effect on my daughter and she improved a grade level in three subjects! Life is so much better in our household and now my daughter has the skills to be a successful student.

I have 2 children, a boy,8, and a girl, just turning 7, (16 months apart). They have been raised practically as twins. My daughter has always wanted to do everything like her brother and always wanted to be equal with him (right down to the amount of juice in her cup). I have also raised them to be individuals. However, I have given them the same amount of love, attention, and affection right from birth. So why is it that my daughter is an overachiever and my son is an underachiever. My daughter is bursting with confidence and has a very healthy self-esteem, while my son gives up easily, and lacks confidence. The author, from the very beginning of this book, wants you to believe that it's our fault, as parents, that our children turn out to be underachievers by our lack of parenting skills. I do agree that in some cases, that may be true, but I have always loved my children unconditionally and always made them feel that it was ok to make mistakes, but to strive for more. And because of that, my son is the most thoughtful, sweet child. He will literally give you the shirt off his back. But yet, he still feels unmotivated and uncapable to do what other 3rd graders do. So I do not agree with Ms. Rathvon who says it's my lack of parenting skills that contributed to my sons lack of motivation. This is not to say that I think I am a perfect parent and that I am completely devoid of flaws, but I refuse to believe that it is anything I've done or haven't done that's puts my son in his position. If you are looking for a book to help boost your child's lack of motivation, you must read "Motivated Minds" by Deborah Stipek and Kathy Seal. It's the best book on the subject out there !!!

This book is a very good resource for parents of underachievers, former underachievers, and anyone who wants to understand the success of their child. Having read other reviews by readers discounting this book and discounting human psychology itself, I was compelled to write my own review. No one blames parents, especially Dr. Rathvon they do the best they can with what they've got; mental resources specifically. This book is for anyone who knows that their child is capable of so much more. It is never too late to fix, polish, and fine tune a learning mind. Every student has the ability to achieve.

Equally talented as a writer and painter, Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) gained renown as the driving force behind Vorticism, the avant-garde movement that flourished in London before the First World War. This book provides the first critical overview of the visual, literary, and philosophical dimensions of Lewis's diverse works, from his abstract and representative paintings to his satirical novels and analytical essays.Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

Every reader knows of authors who were all the rage when they were alive and publishing, only to be forgotten or relegated to obscurity upon their death, if not before. They disappear for decades or generations, admired or consulted by those few who read in specialized fields; or they are the subject of intermittent articles in this or that journal. Thanks to the Internet they can be seen shimmering, a sort of astral projection, on web sites and list-serves with spotty attendances. In these venues situated on rural roads in the republic of letters they are argued with, championed, held up as the acme of what's misbegotten, or pegged as simply typical of a period. For fans, bitter consolation lies in their man or woman being reviled, as such shrill attention does indicate that the core of the oeuvre has not ceased to be dynamic, and perhaps threatening.

Occasionally authors have risen from the dust of library shelves, which is the closest we can now get to witnessing the Phoenix. These rescued figures become the product of cottage industries, but a well-timed nod from hollywood can escalate their reputations and swell their audience. Many of the latest literary finds are those whose work means something quite particular to current audiences - at times, but not in all cases, a retro chic - comprising enthusiasts, popular authors in a position to repay literary debts, scholars who have revisited past figures in search of their postmodern `nowness,' and because of groundswells of curiosity from disparate parts. There is a lovely unpredictability in the resurgence of these artists which fosters hope in those whose favourite choice has not yet bounced back into the limelight. (In an attempt at a shove back onto the stage, see my Amazon review of Lewis' _Rude Assignment_.)

It is unlikely that Wyndham Lewis will ever again receive the attention, negative or positive, that his paintings and writings garnered during his lifetime, yet if any critical work of recent years could restore his dented reputation and, more fruitfully, bring his ideas back into view for a fresh examination, then it is this book by Paul Edwards.

In his combination of literary analysis and art criticism Edwards writes with economy, clarity, intelligence and sensitivity about Lewis' paintings, drawings, short fictions, novels and a mass of philosophically-minded and politically generated essays and speculative works. One realizes that Lewis, perhaps the most probing Modernist in the anglo-united statesian family, left no major concern of the 20th century ignored, even if only to swipe at it with pen and brush. It is to Edwards' credit that he maintains a focus on his subject's wide-ranging thoughts and positions, especially as they are transformed with the passing of time and as events, historical and personal, transform Lewis.

Certain aspects of this book call for special commendation: the examination of _Tarr_, Lewis' first novel; the analyses of _Time and Western Man_ , the central non-fiction work of Lewis' writings, and of _The Human Age_, his last fiction; and the constant engagement with the art works. Art criticism is often written in an abstract and coded way, and academic criticism is often larded with unnecessary polysyllabic constructions, but a key benefit of Edwards' style is that one can argue with his conclusions or suggested interpretations because he has made himself understood. There is no dancing with words, or playfulness in a deconstructionist sense, to obscure his points.

In the aftermath of this book it was instructive, in a disappointing way, to read a review by irish novelist John Banville of _The Crisis of Reason: European Thought, 1848-1914_, written by J.W. Burrow, which appeared in _The New York Review of Books_ (October 4, 2001, pp.38-40). On p.40 Banville responds to what Burrow says about Nietzsche:

"[...] There is a study to be made of the influence on modernism of Nietzsche's thinking, which is insufficiently acknowledged even by the most philosophically-minded of the modernists - it is hard to recall, for instance, a single mention of Nietzsche's name anywhere in Eliot's prose criticism."

Banville is mistaken when he says Nietzsche was not regarded sufficiently by "the most philosophically-minded" modernists, for as Edwards makes plain throughout his almost 600-page book (not a page too long), Lewis engaged Nietzsche in a constant debate (and dealt with many others as well). Pointing out this error on Banville's part is not meant to cast a slur against him; it merely shows how far Lewis has sunk below the critical horizon.

The book's layout is very good. In most cases, when art work is discussed the painting or drawing is at hand without needless flipping through the book. While as a rule footnotes are preferable, in this instance the use of endnotes is justified.

This book has given far greater pleasure than many others recently. For those unfamiliar with Lewis it is an excellent primer; for those just stepping into his sea of words it is an invaluable guide; and for those who are well acquainted with Lewis' concerns and motifs there is much to deliberate on, and hopefully respond to, in Edwards' original findings and his engagement with other critics.

Paul Edwards deserves more laurels than he is likely to get for writing about an artist who is underrated, over-scorned, difficult, and not very likely to experience a surge in popular appreciation. He also merits praise for writing in a direct manner, tackling the contentious aspects of Lewis' life and works head on, for his generally even-handed treatment of others who write on Lewis, and the zest underlying every sentence. His discerning enthusiasm will urge a reader to read Lewis' books again, or for a first time. Not many academics or critics achieve that notable goal.

                                                      Book Description

A towering figure in the history of Irish Quakerism, and friend of William Penn and William Edmundson, Anthony Sharp left England in 1669 to settle in Dublin and carve a place for himself in the woolen trade. As a businessman he succeeded brilliantly, employing some 500 workers and amassing a fortune that included lands in Ireland, England, and New Jersey. His economic success helped him gain entree to prominent political and ecclesiastical officials, from whom he sought relief for persecuted Quakers.

Without peer among Irish Friends as an organizer, Sharp played a key role in assisting fellow Quakers to survive repression and to evolve from a small sect into a denomination. With his second wife, Ann, he helped shape the rigorous style of dress and home furnishings that set the Irish Friends apart from their coreligionists in England. Tireless in his work as a secretary, treasurer, and fund-raiser, he served on the committee that monitored the proceedings of the Irish Parliament and helped pioneer the Friends' home and shop visitations. Sharp took up his pen to defend Quakers in "the Lamb's war" against critics on all sides—Catholics, Anglicans, nonconformists, and sectarian extremists.

When James II extended toleration to nonconformists, Sharp seized the opportunity to become a Dublin alderman and sit on committees whose purview ranged from cleaning the city streets to overseeing the workhouse for the indigent. He attained prominence in the weavers' guild, serving as master in 1688-89 and sitting on its council for years. Notwithstanding his distinctive dress, his refusal to take oaths or pay tithes, and his plain speech, he enjoyed the respect of the rich and powerful.

Dublin's Merchant-Quaker is not only a biography of Sharp but a portrait of Dublin's community of Friends. The author explains in detail the functioning of national, provincial, and local meetings; the Friends' work in educating and disciplining their members; their provision of charity to the needy; and their efforts to ransom captives in Muslim lands. In undertaking these activities, Sharp and his fellow Quakers expressed the driving force of their faith and built a society that sustained the Friends for centuries to come as a minority within another minority, the Protestants of Ireland.
