This book has a succinct introduction to San Fran. I found it an excellent guide to the city. The "contexts" at the back put it all into perspective, too. The dim sum recommendations were good too!

Quickly builds intuition for financial derivatives.......2007-09-10

Tremendously valuable book for its selection and excellent treatment of many rarely addressed aspects of financial derivatives and the care with which intuition for these aspects is developed.

Financial mathematics exists at the intersection of many different fields, yielding many possible perspectives from which to teach and learn about this discipline. Many of these perspectives bog down in the rigor of their respective fields. Such approaches render it difficult to absorb and apply core concepts without spending a great deal of time in first learning topics such as advanced probability theory and stochastic calculus.

Dr. Crack's approach seems to be to develop the intuition as a framework for understanding further advanced study, should it be warranted by the reader. At the same time, he includes many aspects of the underlying science to help bridge the gap between the academic world and the world of trading.

For example, his derivation of the solution to the Black-Scholes equation and subsequent analysis of the components of the solution leaves the reader fully prepared to quickly and intelligently grasp the impact of changes in assumptions. This is in contrast to many treatments that seem to stop at the solution, leaving the reader feeling as though the Black-Scholes solution is simply a black-box with no intuitive connection to the real world.

I like the text because it gives many aspects of the Black-Scholes model that I have not found elsewhere. One may feel that Black-Scholes is an "old" model, but it is the genesis of option pricing and understanding its intuition is the key to understanding more complex models. In addition, the text is very readable, but I think even more satisfying if the reader already has some options background.

Crack's two books, Basic Black-Scholes and Heard On The Street,
are masterpieces of condensed ,focused instruction for those who need to know. There is also an atmosphere of scintillating competence projected on the reader. Some of the anecdotes in Heard On The Street are hilarious; add to this the requirement that you must keep your wits about you at all times when reading
these primers and overall you get a feeling of a happy learning experience. Remarkable.

A great source for intuition on options .......2006-03-22

I was generally familiar with options pricing and read this book after the Hull's book on derivatives. I felt that this text definitely provided a lot of good intuition and different perspectives that I have not see anywhere else.

This text helped me systemize my knowledge of options and develop a more intuitive feel for their behavior. Definitely, a good addition to the classics on option pricing.

Great Introduction to Option Pricing.......2005-09-07

This is an excellent introduction to option pricing, with a great deal of both analytical and practical information. While there is a lot of mathematics (obviously), the logical progression of topics and easy to read text make it quite accessible. Intuition and reasoning are used in conjunction with the mathematics to help make somewhat abstract ideas more concrete. Although the focus of the text is on option pricing, several other facets of finance are explored to help illuminate general pricing/investment strategies. This is an easy to follow book with justifications at every step of the way - great for students as well as investors interested in option trading.

I searched for hours trying to find a resource that would teach options pricing from a pure mathematical point of view. I read several "duds", but this one was a winner. The text focuses on the Black-Scholes theory in pure mathematical terms. This book is geared towards someone who has a solid math background (you are fluent with e^x, binomial trees and basic statistics). This also explained a lot of background concepts in options for the majority of us who don't do this for a living (put-call parity, differences between US and european options, implied volatility and hedging strategies). This book has opened my eyes to a lot of nuances in options pricing.

This book is challenging to read. To understand all the specifics, you have to read it slowly like you would a college textbook. Without studying every equation in detail, gaining a general "big picture" understanding of how and why the prices move gives you valuable insight to where a stock is headed. If you can evaluate the "theoretical price" of an option, and gain information explaining why the theoretical price differs substantially from the actual price (in some cases, the two are over 1000% apart), you can develop a more accurate risk-profile for that stock than the public, or profit from the mispricing of options.

Dynamite Theory Book .......2006-02-19

This book is extremely well written and very useful to me in that it provided the theoretical basis for option pricing. It also pointed out the theoretical limitations of Black Scholes and went on to discuss some of the later theories to improve option pricing. I obatined an Excel spreadsheet from a guy (Hoadley) in Australia which does all the mathematical details in the book plus a lot more. I'd recommend anyone interested get the book, and if you want to play with the numbers and concepts more you can with the spreadsheet functions. The theory presented in the book is more than enough though for most (I'm an engineer and like to understand why things work the way they do.) This book was one of the few that I made extensive notes in while reading it and tabbed the pages. I'd reveiw more specifics but a friend is presently reading it.

The information in these books helped me pass the exam on the first try. I would study the material for each chapter, then study flashcards I made out of the multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter. Might not work for everybody, but it did for me!

Poor Study Guide, even for second review.......2005-12-02

I used the Wiley books as a second review source, after completing the Becker Conviser courses. The value-added for me was small. The number of questions I could not have answered by relying on Becker alone was in the small one-digit percentage range.
On another note: the 2005 Regulations Review guide text, particularily on Taxes, was written and laid out in a style that made it difficult to stay awake, even when studying after a 10-hour sleep.
Although I understand that the Wiley books are relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to Becker, in my opinion, this can be viewed as an example of: you get what you pay for.
Just as a side, I passed first time and with an average of 93%.

You weren't kidding about errors!.......2005-10-05

I am in the process of studying for the exam and overall the books are helping considerably. However, the other customer review talked about errors in the answers to the simulation problems and he wasn't kidding. There are numerous errors (incorrect answers) throughout. It is not a big deal when you know the topic well and are confident in the answer, but when you are unsure of the correct answer, it is a real headache!

At least the answers to the multiple choice questions don't seem to have any errors.

Good study aid but watch out for errors.......2005-05-27

I am in the process of studying for the CPA exam (I take the Audit section tomorrow), so I haven't worked my way through all of the books in this 4 volume set. Each of the books is divided into 'modules' to help you study by topic area. The information presented at the beginning of each module is concise and well laid out; a great aid to learning. The multiple choice questions in each module are challenging and the answers provided help to explain the correct answers. Three of the books (except BEC) have 'simulation' questions. These are a valuable resource in studying, however, Whittington and Delaney have done a poor job of editing these simulations and the problems and answers are riddled with errors. So, watch out! These errors can be a source of much frustration.

Overall, this 4 volume set has helped me improve my knowledge for the CPA exam. Happy Studying!

This book gives tidbits of information on a huge variety of subjects, but not in much detail. It reads well, and has good pidtures, the ones that are commonly used in current dog books, all the same few dogs. It goes in-depth about things most people would buy a subject-specific book for: breeding, whelping, choosing puppies. It is a good basic, general, all around book. Would be useful to have for reference purposes or easy access to pieces of information one would normally read chapters about. GOOD PURCHASE!!

While this is definitely a good book, I didn't find any new information in it. If you have purchased any other quilt-as-you-go books in the past, don't bother to buy it. Better to spend your money on some of the other great quilting books available at Amazon, I think. If quilt as you go is new to you, this book is as good as any other, so buy it.

This book is a classic when it pertains to building and establishing a relationship that works for you and your partner. It is written with a much different perspective and definition of an open marriage than today's view of Open Marriage.

I highly urge anyone in a relationship to read this book together with their partner as a way to stimulate and nurture individual and collective growth.

Please keep in mind the time period this book was written in, as some of the examples used to illustrate points will not speak to the current dynamics between the sexes.

Overall, it's a thoughtful and transforming read.

Please don't be confused by the unfortunate choice of title, nor by the ridiculous books promoting promiscuity that are associated with it by Amazon databases.

Let's examine the two negative reviews of this book.

One reviewer admits that he had decided the book wasn't worthwhile before reading it, and proceeds with an attitude that dares the authors to change his mind. This is hardly an "open" reading, is it? Further, the message of this book is in no way negated by a supposed divorce between the authors. The authors of Open Marriage specifically instruct readers to examine their expectation that marriage lasts forever.

Another reviewer has a vested interest in dismissing Open Marriage, because its ideas contradict those of a book he wrote. He is careful to advertise his own book in his negative review of Open Marriage.

As for whether Open Marriage is outdated, since when did such things as communication and trust become outdated? With extremes of ideology and dogma on a rapid increase, a book that promotes careful examination of our assumptions and expectations before getting married has never been more relevant. Has Socrates' dictum "An unexamined life is not worth living" ever gone out of date?

Briefly, I'll quote from chapter 4:

"The guidelines [to healthy relationships] are as follows:
1 realistic expectations
2 privacy
3 open and honest communication
4 flexibility in roles
5 open companionship
6 equality
7 identity
8 trust

Where do love, sex, and fidelity fit in? Are these not guidelines too - the basic components of any marriage? Important, yes; guidelines, no. Many of the problems with the closed marriage [defined by poor communication, lack of trust, immaturity etc.] stem from a false concept of the part that love, sex, and fidelity play in the relationship between man and a woman. The guidelines of open marriage listed above form the basis upon which love, sex, and fidelity achieve their meaning, not vice versa. If personal identity is based on love, equality measured by sex, and trust defined by fidelity, then identity will be crushed by a lessening of the initial romantic fervor, equality diminished by a temporary failure in sex, and trust destroyed through even the appearance of infidelity. But if personal identity, equality and trust exist in full measure, then the normal fluctuations that occur in any relationship between two human beings can be taken in stride."

One way of looking at the book Open Marriage is to say that the authors are discussing which comes first, the chicken or the egg? They are revealing that love, sex, and fidelity are outcomes of mature relating, thus not the cause of mature relating. If we reverse causation and pursue the product directly, without the process, than we set in motion a degradation from expectation, to demands, to manipulation, to frustration, and ending in "bitter disappointment" (chapter 4). For example, suspicious jealousy pursues fidelity directly, bypassing the process of building trust and commitment. On the other hand, when we follow the above 8 principles of healthy relating, the likely outcome is love, and fidelity. I recall a TV Sitcom in which a holiday family reunion wasn't going well, and someone angrily threatened that "we all had better start having fun right now!" Again, pursuit of the outcome directly without the process, results in our realizing the very thing we most fear (can you hear echoes of Dr. Phil McGraw in this?)

The authors are saying that an unexamined marriage will fail because our unconscious assumptions, demands, and expectations are going to take over, and a great deal of negative conflict will result. These authors are simply saying that we need to pay attention and be proactive, examine our thoughts and feelings openly, and negotiate a mutually acceptable relationship. This open communication and cooperation, as opposed to conflict, is what the authors refer to in the title of their book. They are referring to a Socratic openness to challenging one`s own thoughts and behaviors as a basis of healthy living. This point is strongly supported by Dr. M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled, who refers to Open Marriage on page 93 of ...Traveled. Dr. Peck's says the same thing with a different metaphor: we ought to examine our mental "maps" and be willing to revise them to keep ourselves dedicated to reality. Let Dr. Peck's reference carry more weight than mine.

An Excellent Book about Open Marriage - NOT Swinging!.......2004-05-08

The title of this book has become misleading only because the meaning of the words "Open Marriage" has changed over the decades.

This book is an excellent guide for people interested in all the aspects of attaining and living in an open marriage, which is an overall way of life, not just sexual freedom. Everything from sex to doing the dishes is covered in this book. Some of the language may sound dated since it's original printing, but then again, so does Shakespeare.

This the best book I have ever found to learn about ALL aspects of your marital relationships (not just the sexual ones) and discover the ways in which people try to control and eventually destroy each other as individuals within a marriage.

If you want a book on "swinging" (a/k/a recreational, non-monogomous sex) then this is NOT the book you are looking for. But then again, Open Marriage is leaps and bounds beyond just swinging. This book guides you through making this a way of life in a wonderful way, changing the traditional marriage views in ALL aspects, including non-monogomous sex, but not JUST sex.

How do I know this? I've been living this way for 15 years and still going happy and strong. My first "traditional" marriage lasted 3 years.

I heard about this book, so I wanted to read it to see if it was as funny and stupid (unintentionally) as I heard.

I was not disappointed. Few things in life are free, and sex is defintely not among them.

The perfect coda to this book is that the couple got divroced several years after publishing this book. You can't make this stuff up.

Christopher Andersen's biography Jackie After Jack: Portrait of the Lady is one steamy read. Andersen claims that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis had affairs with Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, William Holden, Warren Beatty, Bobby Kennedy, and JFK's former deputy secretary of defense. He writes that she battled anorexia, was both cheap and greedy, wore big sunglasses partly to cover up bruises inflicted by Aristotle Onassis, tried to sign Princess Diana to a book contract, offered Camilla Parker Bowles $2 million to tell all, and dropped Michael Jackson, whose book she edited, when he stood accused of pederasty. Andersen suggests that the cancer that killed Jackie may have been related to her habits: 40 to 60 cigarettes a day, four decades of carcinogenic black hair dye, and countless amphetamine and carcinogenic steroid injections in the 1960s. Many of the juiciest stories come from anonymous sources, and, according to Newsweek, Brando's biographer claims the alleged Jackie tryst never happened. Some readers may feel that Andersen's breezy assertion that Castro murdered JFK may not fully settle the question. What a fantastic book! One of the best i have ever read.
I`m very interested in books about Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis and this was great.
The writer Christopher Andersen seems to be very serious and
is not just writing gossip, he has done a great job, intervjuing
a lot of people who knew Jackie.
I`ts about JFK, politics, her children, friends,drugs, Onassis,
her work at Doubleday and Viking,her grandchildren, it's fantastic that Christopher A has spoken to so many people.After reading this book you really see Jackie O in a different light. I`m very glad i have this book in my collection.
There are 62 black and white photos in the book.

There was alot of intrigue in Jackie Kennedy's personal life in New York after JFK died. In fact, alot of it was like a soap opera with all its innuendos and intrigue. Jackie had alot of attractive qualities ... and she did things that weren't so attractive .... because she was human. Admiration is complex. One can admire many things about someone but not others. It's fascinating to uncover that underneath it all, she was human.

Author Christopher Andersen takes us into a fascinating and often controversial journey into the real Jackie. The book wastes no time in getting to the action. It begins just seconds after John Kennedy has been shot. No story could be more heartbreaking than the the tragic journey back to Washington, DC and the days after Kennedy's death. According to Andersen, both Jackie and John relied heavily on Max Jacobson, also known as Dr. Feelgood, to relieve their pains and stresses. Jackie was kept well sedated during the funeral to become the brave grieving widow who inspired the world. JACKIE AFTER JACK is a surprising revelation. The widowed Jackie has numerous affairs often with married men and is always drawn to wealthier men. She shatters her golden image by marrying the wealthy and much older Aristotle Onassis. Jackie is portrayed as a woman who demanded loyalty and would end friendship over any perceived slight. Her shopping sprees and extravances were a strain to both her husbands. Although the book can weaken one's admiration for Jackie, it doesn't last long. By the end of the book, no one can feel anything but love and respect for a very remarkable woman. It's a fascinated and well-researched book.

A More Human Approach to an Icon.......2003-02-02

My favorite part about this book is the fact that it gave such a refreshing look at someone who could, so easily, be idealized. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was human & possessed all the failings of a human being. I don't think she saw herself as anything else, & reportedly, could be very self-deprecating among her friends. The Kennedys & all of their family will forever fascinate our imaginations, but this book was a look at a very real woman, who withstood many challenges. She was able to present herself to the world as almost superhuman, which may have been her greatest failing. As they say, everyone is fascinated by power & strength, but too often rejoice in seeing those who possess those qualities topple from grace.

Jackie After Jack: Book Review.......2001-11-28

This is a very good book, the author seems to bring Jackie O to life right before you. You see all sides of the most famous First Lady in America's history. You see the person behind the famous smile and sunglasses, her grief and depression after JFK's murder, her restless traveling and fascinating and ultimately unsatisfactory marriage to Ari Onassis, her rediscovering herself after Ari's death and her final years with the true love of her life, Maurice Templesman. The author makes you realize that this was a real life person, not some Goddess from Mt. Olympus. She was a flawed human being, but then again, aren't we all? I highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn about this fascinating lady.
