Can you beat spectacular scenery and species rhododendron.......2003-02-18
This book not only presents spectacular photographs of parts of rural China that are never seen but plants that are now part of a reserve. The reserve area was negotiated by the Chinese Government , the American Rhododendron Society and Nature Conservancy. There are a total to date of 4 volumes of which this particular reference
is to the 2nd volume. Various libraries have all of them available
to look at but most of the volumes are no longer in print and are very hard to find. The area in which the rhododendrons are photographed is the natural home of most rhododendron species and the source for the genetic basis of all current hybrids. There are no other books that I am aware of that cover this topic with such wonderful pictures. The text is usually in English with the exception of the very first one. Other texts by various members of the Cox family, 3 generations, provide detailed descriptions and photos of the plants their parts but rarely the scenery.

Customer Reviews:
Very Highly Recommended.......2007-03-27
I initially encountered this book while perusing guides for my upcoming summer trip to Yosemite National Park. Since I began reading it, I have not wanted to put it down. It is a comprehensive, practically encyclopedic yet compact book on everything about Yosemite. I don't know how the author managed to pack so much valuable information into such a small source.
The book begins with important and bare basics: a few introductory pages of beautiful glossy color photographs of attractions in the park, a park map, brief intro, a brief what to see and do guide (including average rainfall & temps for all months of the year), and then a color photograph section entitled 20 Things Not To Miss.
The rest of the book then focuses on well-organized sections with pertinent information on everything from the basics of preparation and travelling with all groups such as children and those with disabilities, to the geology, flora, and fauna of the park. Anyone could figure out which are the best hikes for them and which things they could do in every season just by reading for a few minutes in these sections. What I love most is that there are black and white photographs of park landmarks and influential people, such as John Muir, peppered throughout the book, which further illuminate the awesome landscape and spectacular story of Yosemite. The reader gets to discover interesting gems about Yosemite throughout the book. This book makes it a joy to plan my trip because it takes the guesswork out of planning with its lists of who should bring what (and I have to plan for my entire family).
Whether you love in-depth guides, like I do, with facts and photos about everything, or you just want a really good guidebook to accompany you on your visit to glance at now and then, this is the book for you. This book is recommended for the first-time visitor as well as repeat visitors (unless they know the park like the back of their hands). I think I would buy this book even if I wasn't going to Yosemite - it's that enjoyable and fun to read. Or maybe it's just that the park itself has such an awe-inspiring presence and history that reading anything about it is engrossing.

A catalog for a traveling exhibition of art and artifacts from the life of George Washington, this elegant volume also provides an excellent overview history of Washington's life. The biography of Washington is, as would be expected, positive, yet the author, John Rhodehamel, a curator of American History at the Huntington Library in Los Angeles, does not ignore some often overlooked aspects of Washington's personality, specifically his temper, pride, and ambition. Indeed, the "Great Experiment" of the title applies as much to Washington's efforts to transform his own personality as to his enormous contributions to the founding of the United States. Rhodehamel documents how Washington, as he matured, subjugated the fierce ambition that had brought him to international repute during the French and Indian War and eventually made perhaps his greatest contribution to the newly independent colonies by modestly emphasizing the primacy of civilian rule. The text presents Washington's story, up through his stormy second term as president and his death soon after, in readable and often entertaining terms, and the visual component of the book deserves special mention. Besides the many photographs of Washington artifacts and contemporaneous artistic depictions of him, the fine photographic reproduction of letters and journal entries in Washington's own hand does much to humanize a person all too often regarded as a distant and incomprehensible icon. --Robert McNamara
Book Description
This lavishly illustrated book offers a fresh perspective on George Washington and his times--bringing to life a man who was born a loyal subject of the British crown and became the leader of a radical revolution, a victorious military leader who gave up his power to return to farming, and a reluctant statesman who forged the institutions of a popular government.

Decent But Superficial Account.......2000-09-04
This book was written as a companion to an exhibition that opened at the Huntington Library in Los Angeles in October 1998. The illustrations are disappointing, because they are mostly photographs of documents. The text is decent, but provides a very superficial account of Washington's life. A much better general book about Washington's life is James Thomas Flexner's Washington: The Indispensable Man.
Washington's achievements were primarily in three areas: commanding the continental army, being president of the Constitutional Convention, and serving as the country's first President. He practically single-handedly fostered a sense of our being one united country and held it together through the war, the draftig of the Constitution, and the national's early history.
It is difficult to overestimate Washington's contributions. Everything he did set a precedent for the nation. And everything was being done for the first time. There had been no democratic country in the history of the world. No country had had a democratically elected leader; they had all been kings.
Washington was a fascinating man. Unfortunately, this book is not. Still, it is worthwhile as a superficial overview of Washington's life.

Customer Reviews:
A great book I disagreed with.......2004-11-15
As a person with manic depression, I can identify with some of the things Kate Millett had to say. However, I found her attitude about mental illness rather annoying. In this book, it is clear that she finds a diagnosis of manic depression infuriating and shameful. She finds lithium, a drug that has saved countless lives, to be nothing short of political oppression. She ends by saying that the illness does not really exist.
I cut Millett some slack because the book was written in the 80s and our society had not yet crossed over from Freudian thinking into brain science (we are still making that journey). I'm wondering if she has changed her mind at all in the years since the publication of the book. I, myself, am not ashamed or infuriated by my diagnosis in the way Millett was. I insist on my right to proper treatment, where she felt wronged by the notion of treatment at all.
While I did not agree with most of what Millett had to say, this book is captivating. She is clearly a brilliant woman and a fantastic writer.
Maybe it's the place I'm in.......2002-09-25
Millet carefully unpacks the historical events surrounding her "breakdowns." Her family and many friends think she is crazy to buy a farm and turn it into an artist's retreat. As readers, it's hard to know whether she did or didn't have a breakdown. However, regardless of whether it even can be determined in such a black-and-white manner, we feel an incredible empathy for her as she welcomes us to experience her hurt, her feelings of jealousy and loss, and her moments of profound joy. For anyone who has ever been diagnosed with a mental "disorder," this is a wonderfully affirming book.
Fascinating but wordy and pretentious.......2002-03-20
I read this book primarily for some insights into the excesses of psychiatry, and found much of that. I was quite surprised how strongly I identified with some of her feelings. Though I have have never had problems of the sort Kate had (has?), I am one of the many who have experienced clinical depression and been treated for it. As I read her book, I noticed how even this minor problem carries a lifetime of suspicion from others. As I go through life, physicians and relatives are quite ready and willing to jump on ordinary feelings as "evidence" that it is happening again, and maybe there is more to it. How oddly must one behave to start the spiral down to the point of something like Kate's experience happening?
Though I felt that Kate really should have known better than to do some of what she did, knowing that others were likely to use them excuses to have her committed, I still felt deeply her fear and helplessness. I was especially disgusted by the attitude of the shrink who failed to get her hauled away in the Bowry only through Kate's quick thinking.
The minuses of this book for me were the many times the she goes into descriptions of artists and other creative types in such exalted terms. Kate left little doubt that, to her, anyone who does other things with their lives are empty shells who rely on the chosen ones (such as herself) to be able to see the world as it truly is. This sort of elitism (how many times does she tell us she is a professor and published writer) and condescension is sickening in someone who spends so much of her life trying to right great wrongs of society.
The Loony Bin Trip.......2001-04-21
Written between 1982 and 1985, The Loony-Bin Trip is overwhelmingly an effort to revert common notions of depression so that, like "grief," it may be allowed to enter the popular vocabulary. Millet achieves her foremost intent through her undeniably exquisite prose supplanted by already-changing attitudes toward depression among the public. However, The Loony Bin Trip is much more than a diatribe against prevailing stigmas of depression - it is a tender account of a talented, intelligent women's relentless desire to be accepted and understood by her contemporaries. Traumatic accounts and vivid self-reflection can occasionally prompt the most neutral reader into turmoil, thus rendering The Loony Bin Trip a cross-reference somewhere between memoir and horror. Her gut wrenching appeals for sympathy may provoke anger in some readers, reinforcing her real-life role as that of a "crazy" woman, but ultimately, her wealth of writings prove her to be a functional, if not creatively contributing, member of society. Reading Kate Millet's The Loony Bin Trip is a trip in itself. (Review written for Women's Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal," a publication of the Claremont Colleges.
The Looney Bin is a fast & fascinating book........1998-11-29
The Looney Bin By Kate Millett shares with us her experiences, ranging from dispair, to terror, and finally inner peace, after being diagnosed Manic Depressive. The book is a strong indictment against the treatment of the mentally ill here and abroad.

A wonderful collection of Borges' non-fiction.......2007-07-09
This is a wonderful collection of Borges' non-fiction. It is a marvelous book to read and ponder. The only thing I could have wished for is a larger print font. I find I have to read this one with a magnifying glass. I suppose I shouldn't complain because there is SO much material. I will give this 5 stars just for the wealth of good reading it has to offer.

A Stimulating Variation of Yoga you Have to Try.......2006-07-26
Working with a partner offer multiple possibilities and benefits since the support brought by your partner when performing shared positions allows you to get a better stretch, to focus more intensively, and to maintain position for longer periods.
When you perform Yoga with a partner, you will feel that in each position you receive more energy than what you bring. And if you workout with your loved one, you can transform the experience of each maintained position into a celebration of life.
Double the fun!.......2000-04-11
This is a great yoga workout. I find that when working with a partner I am more aware of the breath and am able to maintain positions with better form for longer periods of time. I also enjoy the sense of symetry one gets with the mirror imaging of working with another warm body. Working with a partner has given me new insights into positions I have been practicing for many years and has helped me improve my individual practice. Although there are some advanced positions, the majority can be done by intermediate and beginning yoga students.

Great book!.......2006-11-22
I stumbled across this book in the library last year and haven't been able to find a copy for myself. The photos are fantastic and it gives you a nice overview of penguin biology without being too scientific. I highly recommend if you love looking at penguins and want to learn the basics about them.
Good photos, otherwise mediocre.......2000-07-25
This is a great book for someone who has a lot of time to read, and who is interested in penguins, but can't observe them firsthand. I love penguins, and I got this book for Christmas a few years ago. I loved the pictures immediately. But when I started to read the actual text, I didn't love it so much. The information is presented with "big words" and a professional-like vocabulary. For me, it was hard to really get into, and also to follow. True, it has a lot of information, but if you are young, like me (I was 13), then it is probably better as a strictly picture book. This book has a wonderful collection of penguin photos, of many diffent species and from many different places. They are unique, not like everyday penguin pictures that are available anywhere. It gives you a different perspective of penguins. For instance, there is a picture of a penguin getting caught by a leopard seal. Gory, yes. But it gives you a feeling of the constant dangers penguins face. (That is the only gory picture in the book.) Kids would love the pictures, but other than that, they would probably not like it. Definitely not a read-aloud book. Overall, I'm glad I have it, as a reference, but I'm also glad I didn't buy it myself.

Description:
Concentrations of biogenic and toxic elements (Na, K, Mg, Ca, P, S, Fe, Cu, Zn, Co, Mn, Se, Ni, Sr, Al, Cd, Pb, As) were determined for the first time in feathers of gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) and chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) from Antarctica. A comparison of element levels was performed among these species in years 2002-2003. Penguins molt annually and this fact allows defining precisely the concentrations of accumulated toxic elements and heavy metals in plumage every year. A continual environmental biomonitoring could establish a possible trend to contamination of the Antarctica sea zones. The penguin feather is an excellent subject for monitoring because penguins have long life span, permanent ecological niche and dominate the aviafauna in Antarctica. Because of its remoteness, Antarctica is believed to be unpolluted. The relatively elevated levels of Cd established are due to the Cd-enrichment of the Antarctic marine food chain. Because of great bioaccumulation of lead in feathers, the concentration of Pb in penguin feather was higher (4-8 times) compared to that of Cd. In both penguin species the levels of Zn were 1.9 times higher than respective Fe levels. The concentrations of most of the investigated elements were significantly higher in P. papua than in P. antarctica and this probably could be explained by the different diet and feeding habit of these species.

A good addition to my Dummies library.......2007-05-12
Being a late in life beginning woodworker, I needed something that didn't assume I knew all there was to know about the tools I had and how to bend the wood to my will in order to end up with items I could be proud of. This book helped a lot in that regard. While I won't always use some of the shortcuts and techniques the author recommends, knowing that you can get from point A to point B professionally was a big help. This is a valuable addition to my woodworking reference library and I will refer to it often.

Over the years, the ability to handle small carpentry jobs can save you a great deal of money. Perhaps more important, you can make small repairs before they turn into big ones. With a set of basic carpentry skills you can also make a lot of little improvements that you might not have if you had to hire someone to do the work.

A Dummie for buying this book..........2002-08-13
You'll still be a dummie after reading this book. For those with little or no knowledge of carpentry, you won't find what you are looking for in this book.
There are no photos and almost NO illustrations (or drawings), so things are just described and you'll have to imagine how it looks. For example, the vast variety of screws and nails are addressed without a single illustration! A picture says a thousand words and helps the reader to visualize and comprehend the topic, but you won't find it here.
Skip this book and try Black & Decker's Complete Guide to Home Carpentry. It's loaded with color photos of the actual work you'll be doing and explains everything step-by-step.
Truly for dummies.......2002-01-14
When you read the title of this book, please take it to heart. It really is only for dummies. Who else but a dummy would need to know how to nail, how to push a button to turn on a saw, etc? There is no real information on basic carpentry skills such as the use of a framing square, framing itself, the use of leveling tools to make sure you are starting with level ground, and so on. A more appropriate title for this book would have been "Home Improvment for Dummies" as one could not take knowledge from this book and build from scratch.
I will no longer purchase "For Dummies" books without checking it out at a bookstore first.
Carpentry For Dummies?.......2000-04-13
First time builders need not worry! This books explains all you need to know. From tools and uses to step by step instructions. I highly recommend this for any beginner.

Plenty of dedicated crafters are also experienced gardeners, but if your thumb tends to be more glue-covered than green, you can still create wonderful items from the bounty of a less-than-expert garden or buy the supplies from a craft store or garden center. Designer Marie Browning provides a brief overview of craft-friendly flowers and herbs (and even fruits and vegetables), along with good instructions on various methods for pressing and drying them. The large selection of projects falls into several categories: personal and home fragrances, culinary, pressed-flower items, dried-flower decorations, and twig and vine projects. More than 80 recipes explain how to make facial scrubs, bath oils, potpourri, sachets, natural cleaning products, herbal cooking blends, fruit butters, flavored vinegars, syrups, spirited fruits and liquors, and more, plus there are step-by-step directions for an array of candles, frames, wreaths, arrangements, and garlands. Since many of these are destined to be gifts, the book also includes lovely packaging and labeling techniques, plus nice ideas for combining finished projects to produce themed gift baskets. For instance, a selection of culinary herbal blends, garden-herb biscuit mix, and flavored butters, along with a twig frame and a bark candle holder, make up the North Woods Basket, presented in a handmade wood container with natural-paper labels. Be sure to make a few extra items, since you won't want to give them all away. --Amy Handy

great ideas!.......2001-02-13
I recently purchased this book, and upon a more thorough review at home, discovered just how marvelous it was! The book is great because it gives you a diverse selection of projects from using herbs, to pressing flowers, to making oils, to making gifts from things in your garden, to culinary crafting...I could go on and on. Also, the instructions are very simple and easy to follow and there are very nice, very clear photos for referal. This is the book for the person who likes to do more than one thing, not just focus on one type of craft.

Encouraging with Solid Advice.......2005-07-06
This is a great resource for parents of teenagers who are facing the difficult challenges of adolescence in today's world.
It is co-written from the perspectives of both the father of a rebellious teen and the former rebel herself (she is now an adult in nursing school). There is an ongoing narrative telling about the struggles of Heather Stone starting at age 13, as well as those of her parents, Charles and Sherryl. Along with their encouraging story, there are nine 'relational life preservers' to help those with similar struggles.
There is a Christian perspective throughout this volume. Charles is a pastor and Heather is a prodigal daughter who has returned to her roots.
Although I have been fortunate enough to avoid most of the extremely difficult situations that Charles and his wife faced with Heather, I recommend this book for any parent of a teenager. Even parents of teens who are not totally rebellious face many trying times through the adolescent years. The advice given will be helpful for any parent with teenagers.
A powerful "teaching memoir" that all parents should read.......2005-06-27
A couple of years ago the movie Thirteen, staring Holly Hunter and Evan Rachel Wood, had people talking with its frank depictions of early adolescent drug use, sexual promiscuity, and emotional angst. Media outlets picked up on the public's level of shock that the movie would show 13-year-olds engaged in such behavior. "Maybe 16- or 17-year-olds, but surely not kids so young?! And not middle-class white girls!" seemed to be the general feeling.
It didn't take long for adolescent psychologists to make the talk show rounds and confirm that this was, indeed, an accurate picture of how many young girls are starting to act out as they enter the teen years. And the movie only confirmed what pastor Charles Stone and his wife had learned the hard way, just a few years earlier, when their oldest daughter, Heather, turned 13.
Today Heather is 22 and a committed Christian pursuing a career in nursing. But for five years she tore herself and her family apart with behavior that the word "bad" doesn't modify with justice. Emergency rooms, a manual labor camp, mental hospitals, and countless rehab units became the terrain of their lives. In DAUGHTERS GONE WILD, DADS GONE CRAZY, Heather and her father tell their story in a he said/she said format for which a courtroom scene (he said) sets the stage:
"A handful of fidgety people sat in the nearly empty room. We took our seats in the back, and after a few moments the bailiff barked his customary, "All rise!" A dark-haired judge emerged from the side door. He seemed to float to his bench in his ankle-length black robe. I could feel my shoulders begin to tighten as we nervously sat in Courtroom A.
'Charles and Sherryl Stone vs. Heather Stone: Case number 43. Please come forward,' he bellowed.
The bailiff opened the waist-high swinging door that led to the judge's bench. The judge motioned for us to sit at the well-worn Formica covered table in front of him. He peered over his black-rimmed glasses. 'So what's the problem?' he asked.
With a dry mouth I muttered, 'We just can't handle our oldest daughter anymore. She runs away, stays out all night with boys, uses drugs and alcohol, curses us, and skips school. We've consulted a half-dozen psychologists. We've pled with her, fought with her, and grounded her. We're desperate. We need your help.'"
The judge threatened Heather with an ankle monitoring device if she didn't start obeying her parents, but it would take a lot more before she was ready and willing to make changes. No longer opposing litigants, father and daughter want to provide hope, encouragement, and a few hard-earned bits of advice to others facing similar turmoil. DAUGHTERS GONE WILD, DADS GONE CRAZY is divided into eleven chapters, nine of which are devoted to what the duo calls "relational life preservers." They include #1 "Don't Panic at the First Warning Signs," #5 "Reconnect with Gifts from the Heart," and #7 "Chose Your Battles --- And Lose Some on Purpose." The first half of each chapter features Charles speaking to dads and the second half features Heather talking to daughters.
This book is what I like to call a teaching memoir. It doesn't shy away from bullet-pointed instruction, but its soul is that of a narrative. And it's in the storytelling that this book is most powerful and instructive. Both father and daughter display a penchant for writing as they relive, in often emotionally raw and painful detail, their conflicts. Charles speaks honestly about the struggle to continue to love his daughter in the face of her vitriol, and Heather speaks candidly about the jabs from fellow students and friends --- incidents adults often overlook as petty in the lives of their children --- that fed her frustration and rebellion.
DAUGHTERS GONE WILD, DADS GONE CRAZY is geared for fathers and daughters, but many of its lessons would well serve any combination of parent/child conflict. In fact, I'd encourage all parents to read this book, regardless of your children's behavior or age. It will make you a better parent and a better support for fellow parents dealing with out-of-control children.

Fascinating and helpful.......2005-04-12
It's amazing to read of the downhill spiral of the relationship of this father and daughter (Charles and Heather). But then even more amazing to watch God put their relationship back together again. Lots of helpful advice here for parents and for teens (Heather writes directly to the teens while Charles writes to the parents). Read it if you're in a struggling parent/child relationship, or even if you want to just keep your current relationship healthy.
a "must read" book for hurting teens and parents.......2005-03-24
As the author of "Relief for Hurting Parents," I read other parenting books with care to detail. I found "Daughters Gone Wild, Dads Gone Crazy" to be a well-written book that gives instant help and encouragement to parents who are doing their best to survive adolescent challenges and to recover and preserve their children. I sank to the depths of father-daughter pain with authors Charles and Heather Stone, but I also found myself laughing with them at the inadvertent funny things that occur when family matters are so-o-o serious. Their candid admission of mistakes allows readers to learn from their mistakes. Their successes and recommendations offer new hope to families who are still in the jungle from which the Stones have broken free. My counseling clinic is recommending this book to clients. -Buddy Scott
