Study Guide, Volume 1, for use with Intermediate Accounting
ASIN: 0072504129 |
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for self study.......2006-04-26
The book not only teaches you how to book accounts, but also why to do so, which I rarely found in other comparable accounting books. It helps you understand the logic behind the accounting rules. The author is both a good teacher and good reseacher. I love this book!
Wordy and heavy.......2003-05-28
I have been using this book for an Intermediate Accounting class that I have to take as a pre requisite for a Master's degree. Even though the book is quite complete in explaining accounting principles it is unecessarily wordy and extremely heavy.
The first five chapters (220 pages) provide a review of what accounting is, the accounting information system, the income statement and the balance sheet. Most of the what is written here is either too basic or will be later found in the remaining chapters of the book. These pages could be easily removed without sacrificing the remaining contents and the understanding of accounting.
Later chapters, however, are also wordy and take too much time explaining concepts that could readily be understood in a couple of lines. You end up getting tired of reading the same thing again and again.
In the end, we have to pay the price for so many pages. With 1300 + pages this book is the heaviest one I have ever carried around. Many people in my class have to use a wheeled backpack. I sometimes can't understand the fascination of editors in the US for such heavy books. If you go to Europe, Asia, and South America, books are usually thinner and much, much lighter.
I would recommend the book to be offered in a CD Rom (or e text) format. Carriyng my laptop around makes more sense than carrying the book.
Accounting can sound less confusing than explained here.......2002-08-08
This book for undergraduate accounting classes at the junior level was more confusing to me than the comparable book by Kieso et al. The sequence of the chapters is not entirely logical. More advanced concepts seem to be covered towards the beginning whereas some basic chapters are discussed towards the end of the book. It was especially confusing when not covering the chapter in chronological order - too bad that my class's syllabus was not outlined according to this book's chapter sequence. In a different class - when we used Intermediate Accounting by Kieso - jumping back and forth was not a big problem. This book by Spiceland also seemed to be very wordy. Studying by solving problems at the end of the book seemed to work. However, it is more important to know how your teacher designs the quizzes and exams and then study accordingly. On the CD that comes with it, there is a lot of ballast. The quizzes are the only valuable thing, I felt. There is not really a lot of use complaining about its weight - accounting books always seem to be extremely heavy and pricy. But this certainly holds true for this one as well!!! When I tried to resell the book at the university bookstore, they would not take it back because it was selling badly on a national scale. Very frustrating when you paid [$$$] just a couple of months earlier...
boring.......2002-05-30
This book put me to sleep. It is a very bland book. This is based on the volume one edition chapters 1-14.
Excellent Instruction.......2001-10-19
Straightforward and logical, the material in this text is so well laid out that it is truely possible to learn Intermediate Accounting on your own. An excellent sequential and progressive presentation of a difficult subject! My school has changed texts and is using Kieso's text, but I want to learn the material (all but impossible with Kieso) so this is the text I rely on!

Book Description
This collection of projects inspired by myth, symbolism, religion, and personal beliefs is designed for beaders and artists interested in imbuing their work with meaning. The 26 designs range from necklaces and bracelets to wall hangings, bags, an heirloom box, and even a mobile. Each piece has a distinct focus and specific purpose that is elaborated on by its designer, who writes about the significance beading plays in his or her life. The designs are divided into chapters focusing on different aspects: protection, healing, strength, good fortune, prayer, bonding, and remembrance. A wide range of techniques is offered for beadworkers, with some as basic as knotting, seed beading, peyote stitch, brick stitch, ladder stitch, and bead embroidery stitches. More specialized techniques include bead weaving, beading on screen, and painting on glass. Beyond the projects inside, this guide is a starting point for an artist's own creativity and self-expression.

Beading for the Soul:Inspired Designs from 23 Contemporary Artists.......2007-03-29
This book is great! I wanted a gift for my mother who is getting more experienced at jewlry making. She loves the book.
Beading Art book.......2006-03-23
short on technique, lots of talk. Pieces could have been shown on/being used rather than as static objects.
Remarkable and Uplifting . A Must Have for Your Beadbook Library!.......2006-02-05
If you, like me, find that when you are creating pieces of jewelry you are released from everyday cares and nourished by what you are doing, then you will understand instantly what makes this book special.
I have been making jewelry for some time now, but I have never consciously tried to figure out what it is about the process of creating the things that I make that I find so replenishing.
Beading for the Soul explains in separate sections (for example: "Beading for Protection", "Beading for Good", Beading for Prayer") what it is that we are doing when we pick up a bead and SAY something with it. I was wowed by this book. I finally understood why someone like me, who has a love of beauty but also has a need for quiet, introspective time (as a parent of children with disabilities) would want to really come forward and express myself. Put me under the heading of "Beading for Healing". The author, Deborah Cannarella, has a chapter titled that. Yes, put me there, and put this book in your cart if you wish to understand why you are doing what you do when you bead. It is a beautiful book in every sense of the word, anyway. Lovely photos, moving stories from the artists, and inspiring projects. I am grateful I chose this book as one of my New Year's gifts to myself.
Wonderful Inspirations.......2006-01-08
Just received this book yesterday and can barely put it down. The photos are crisp, illustrating the details of each piece. It's refreshing to discover how an artist is inspired and not just what stitch or thread to use. Great gift for a beader!
Beadwork that heals, uplifts, and inspires..........2005-11-04
Some artists derive simple pleasure from their beadwork; others find a much deeper meaning in the craft. In Beading for the Soul, you will find not only a fine selection of beautiful beaded projects to make, you'll also discover ways to infuse your creations with depth and spiritual substance.
You will also gain from the insight offered by the contributing artists, who share the personal experiences, emotions and thought processes that support their creations.
For instance, a visit to an anthropology museum in Peru led artist Susan Guagliumi on a quest to make a "votive offering" to her craft: a mesh bag with an ancient cat motif. Other artists work through health issues, celebrate our environment, harness energy, and reconnect with their faith through beadwork.

Book Description
Create a bit of heaven on earth by arranging and tending one of several beautiful gardens that nourish the soul as well as please the eyes. Erect a tranquil Japanese Zen garden, or master the art of the fruit- and rose-filled Islamic garden; an Italian Renaissance garden filled with statuary; and a sacred medieval Christian garden. Or set up your own healing garden complete with all the medicinal herbs. Gorgeous full-color photos capture the splendor of acclaimed gardens from all around the world. "'On earth as in heaven,' a line from the Lord's Prayer, would fit in well here in relation to the spirit of this lovely...book. That the appeal of creating a space of temporal contemplation, or a portion of a long-lost paradise, should be so universal is not so unusual. Author Jay has covered, in swift order, the major influences in garden design, from medieval to Zen, with appropriate illustrations and photographs that steal one's gaze. Here and there, shards of garden lore spice things up...With helpful and informative bits of information at the end of each chapter, this is a fine book for taking the first steps into one's own garden of the spirit."--Booklist. "Gardens of the Spirit is your guide to creating a personal paradise."--St. Petersburg Times. "Of special interest are designs of each type of garden that you can create yourself...a fascinating and essential book."--Newark Star-Ledger. 144 pages (all in color), 7 1/4 x 9. NEW IN PAPERBACK.

Banish the mess at home, finally! With Good Housekeeping's unique room-by-room, zone-by-zone, clutter-busting guide, you can win the fight against clutter--not only for a day or a week but once and for all. Features the Good Housekeeping seal on the cover.
You've spent 20 minutes looking for the remote, looked high and low for your favorite sweater, and missed paying a bill on time because it was stuffed in the junk drawer. But no more! On the heels of the wildly successful Good Housekeeping The Complete Household Handbook, this illustrated reference--with a hidden spiral and tabs for easy access to each subject--addresses one of our most pressing predicaments: getting rid of home clutter forever.
You'll find invaluable advice on making real changes--some simple, other more complex--that transform the way you use space so clutter never happens in the first place. This household guide is cleverly organized by room, and each room is broken down into well-defined zones. Each zone features a clock icon showing roughly how long each one will take to de-clutter, and "Keeping Up" sections at the end of each chapter help you make sure that everything stays in its place. Tackle every zone in each room--one zone at a time--and you'll get your entire home organized--even if you devote less than a few minutes a day.
No home should be without it
Customer Reviews:
A fine guide to eliminating clutter through creating convenient storage alternatives.......2006-02-03
If your house organization is perpetually 'clutter' mode and you lack the organizational skills to do anything but clean up once or twice a year, The Complete Clutter Solution: Organize Your Home For Good is for you. A room-by-room guide broken down into zones shows not only how to de-clutter, but how much time will be involved. Involve other family members in maintaining the structure created in The Complete Clutter Solution and benefit from discussions of organizational bins, hangers and other special tips in a fine guide to eliminating clutter through creating convenient storage alternatives.
WHAT A WASTE OF $$ (UNLESS YOU HAVE $75,000 TO REDO YOUR KITCHEN).......2006-01-23
This is the same old tired suggestions for cleaning up your clutter. The suggestions given are to install custom made draws that double and triple pull out. The suggestion for the pantry was to organize cans from little to big (duh) and then group like items together (duh) that's in every single organizing book published so this one is not different than any other. Also the other suggestion was to install a pull out swinging triple door pantry system. Oh is that affordable? If I had $75,000 to redo my kitchen I would install the fancy garbage bin that pulls out of the cabinet and the double drawer pot rack with side lid bins. Come on, don't waste your money on this book or it's suggestions. Very few pictures and all for the rich. I thought Good Housekeeping was for the everyday family. Get it at the library and then return it after you don't read it.
Time to Organize!.......2005-12-29
Things I like about this book:
*there's a time clock for each project
*it separates the home into sections to tackle
*it doesn't just tell you how to fix it, but how to stick with it
Drawbacks:
*I really don't like ring binders on books
Book Description
Winner of the 1998 Iowa Short Fiction Award, a national competition juried by the Iowa Writers' Workshop. The River of Lost Voices captures both the magic and sorrow of life in Santa Cruz Verapaz, a small town in the northern mountains of Guatemala. In each of his stories, Mark Brazaitis gives voice to Guatemala's indigenous population--people who speak Pokomchi and Cakchiquel, languages and cultures often buried in the crush of assimilation. Through their voices, the author uncovers tales of lives redeemed and lost in the tumult of history.
Customer Reviews:
Haunting.......2000-06-21
This is a beautiful collection of stories. The writing is vivid, the character portrayal rich with detail and emotional depth. I remain haunted by what I read in this book: the unsettling images, the keen insight into a town on the other side of the globe, the energy of the characters. This ranks among the best-written books of short stories that I have read, and I heartily recommend it.
A wonderful and touching look at Guatemala & its people.......1999-08-28
Mark Brazaitis has done a wonderful job of capturing the human experience in this terrific collection. I found myself being drawn into each of the stories and falling in love with the characters. His use of magical realism captures the spirit of Latin American literature perfectly. I highly recommend this collection and look forward to reading future works by this extremely talented new writer.
Excellent, compassionate.......1999-08-20
This is an extraordinary look at what may seem like an ordinary town. The stories here vary from the horrific ("Jose Del Rio") to the mournful ("The Whale") to the humorous ("How They Healed") to the epic ("Bathwater"). Throughout the collection, the author shows immense compassion for his characters.
Disappointing.......1999-01-31
Although, I enjoyed some of the short stories, and they provided some insight on situation faced by the people of Guatemala, I was disappointed in this book for 2 reasons. First, I understood, that the book was a voice of a Guatemalan writer. It turns out, however, that the author is a native of Washington D.C., who spent 4 years in Guatemala with the Peace Corps. He does not write of the experience of an expatriate in Guatemala, but rather writes from a first person psychological perspective of the Guatemalans themselves, especially the indigenous people. While an outsider often can have penetrating insight into a culture, especially one's own, they remain an outsider with an outsider perspectives and values. My second grounds for disappointment, and I believe related to the first, is that a predominant theme in most of the stories concerned the sexual experience of the principle characters. While human sexuality is no doubt a riveting part of human experience, and much written about in contemporary serious literature, I was disappointed that other themes more central to the people of Guatemala were not more deeply explored.
These are engaging stories about Guatemalan life........1998-10-19
Make way for Mark Brazaitis, a new voice, a new awareness in American letters. Not that he pushes his way onto stage center, understand. On the contrary this diffident artist masks his considerable art and talent in gentleness. His collection of stories, "The River of Lost Voices," taps deeply into the experience and sensitivity of Guatemala, and, through this country into a larger Latin American landscape. In literary terms, the vein is known as magic realism, a well-spring of Latin reality. But he does so as an U.S. American, and because of this serves us all as guide into its mysteries. His understanding of female psychology is wonderful to behold. In contrast, García Márquez and Vargas Llosa, the reigning gods of magic realism, approach their women with characteristic macho bravado. Not so Brazaitis. His insight here is uncanny. Here's a man after woman's heart.

Looking Homeward.......2007-08-07
Thomas Wolfe immortalized the western part of North Carolina in his heyday. During the Great Depression the WPA employed thousands of writers to document the culture and kifestyles of each state, thus preserving for all time a way of life that was soon to be gone forever.
In Voices of Our Mountain Kin we are lucky enough to have another window on an all too quickly vnishing past, preserved for future generations. This book has charm, style and grace, and the wonderful sound of distinct voices all blending together to make a swelling chorus of praise for a common mountain heritage.
Thoroughly enjoyable, filled with regional dialect, humor, pathos and reverance for the homespun ways of a sturdy people. Highly recommended.
History as it Really Happened.......2007-07-07
This book is a delightful collection of short stories of history as it happened to pioneer folks mostly in North Carolina. If you've ever visited the state and wondered, who lived there? This book just might tell you not only who lived there, but how they lived, what they ate, and generally every day life, that so often gets left our of our history books.
This book should be required reading for every person with any connection to North Carolina and it's people, or just find the state facinating.
A wonderful collection!.......2006-10-07
I found this collection of short stories, photographs and poems both historically fascinating and wonderfully entertaining. I am from this region and believe that we must document and truly treasure the stories and customs of our ancestors. Though not all of the stories are historically accurate, they speak to the tradition of orally passing tales down from one generation to the next. Whether your goal is to learn of the flavor of the Appalachian culture or just be entertained by ghost stories and mountain medicine cures, then this is the book for you!

Beautiful Book.......2007-04-16
I had to buy this book for a class but I decided right away, that it wouldn't be one that I would sell back. The photographs, which make up most of the book, are amazing. The book also tells the stories of the coal miners, their families, and the people who deal with serious issues. There are stories and photos of miners on strike about black lung andwomen holding back dump trucks on their way to strip mine just to name two. This book's photos are amazing and they really make this book. I would reccomend this book to people interested in the real people of Appalachia and their very real struggles.

A Great Collection of Appalachian Writing.......2000-04-28
Appalachia Inside Out is a collection of some of the finest writing produced by Appalachian writers about Appalachia. The volume is divided into thematic units such as Roots, Exploration, and Settlement, Heroes and Demigods, and Nature and Progress. The reader will find a find collection of essays, short stories, and poems carefully chosen to present the region accurately and honestly. Together volumes 1 and 2 of this work give scholars and general readers alike a full range of readings about Appalachia. As a graduate student, I found this book a fascinating introduction to the study of Appalachian writers and writing, and as a teacher of Southern Appalachian Literature, I consider this book invaluable. I highly recommend Appalachia Inside Out to anyone wishing to read and learn more about Appalachia.

Voices from the Summit.......2001-02-26

Size is 251 pages w/ contributor bio and many mountain photos, measures 9" by 12", softbound, published by National Geographic in association with The Banff Centre for Mountain Culture. From the back cover: "An extraordinary tribute to the art of mountaineering with many of the worlds greatest climbers, a book both unique in scope and unprecedented in authority. Looking back at the climbers milestone's and forward to new challenges, these founding fathers, contemporary superstars, and their chroniclers explore every aspect of the sport and offer thoughtful, personal, and often provocative vision of what mountaineering truly means to the men and women who test their spirits and hazard their lives in the risky but rewarding world of high adventure."
Contributors include Reihold Messner, Ed Viesturs, Wade Davis, Sir Chris Bonington, Catherine Destivelle, David Breashears, Greg Childs, Leo Houlding, Sir Edmund Hillary, Lynn Hill, Yvon Chouinard, Jeff Lowe, Todd Skinner, Kitty Calhoun, Will Gadd, Thomas Hornbein, Royal Robbins and 15 others weighing in on 11 topics crucial to the future of mountaineering, from Himalayan climbing and the ethics of adventuring to ice climbing and rock climbing, plus a history of the Banff Mountain Film Festival.
Personal opinion: Interesting read with the individual bios and mountaineering history, great information on philosophical approach to the climbers world. Easy to read sections without losing focus, each climber stands alone, can move around rather front to back. A good reinforcement to belief, you can do anything you want.
