very useful guide.......2004-06-19

I checked this book at Barnes and Nobles and looked like a perfect travel guide. I didn't buy it just because I'd already bought a more expensive guide to the Pacific Coast/Canada and I didn't want to travel with more weight. Otherwise, the Must See Vancouver guide looked perfect for somebody that doesn't want to spend too much and who rather read the essentials needed for a good trip. You can still get detailed instructions and pretty color pictures but you don't have to carry a heavy book with you. The Michelin star rating is very useful, for example if you have limited time to travel you can choose to see only the sites that are rated three stars and that way you don't feel like you'll miss anything good. The Vancouver book also included Vancouver Island and other short visits starting from Vancouver. I highly recommend this guide. It's too bad I didn't see it before I bought the other guide!

Without his voice, there isn't much.......2000-08-28

The point of Franklin Roosevelt's brilliant fireside chats and other seminal speeches was that the listener could hear his voice and experience his charisma. This is impossible with this book which is merely lifeless words on the printed page. Of course some of FDR's speeches make interesting reading, but the entire thrust of his message is lost without the resonant voice and the indefinable "something" he brought to the microphone.

Just yesterday I was listening on CD to FDR's incomparable Pearl Harbor speech from December 8, 1941. Even though this was long before I was born, I always get goosebumps listening to his intonations, the cheering from the Representatives and Senators and the feeling that you are actually witnessing history. There is none of this in this book, where reading speeches is a paltry substitute (at best) for listening to FDR, who was perhaps the most effective Presidential orator of the 20th century. Those who extol Reagan as an effective and charismatic communicator need to listen to Roosevelt.

My advice is to buy a CD with the collected speeches of FDR and ignore this book. The idea is good but the premise flawed. You need to hear Roosevelt's voice, not merely read his words.

A GREAT BOOK TO GET TO KNOW THE BEST PRESIDENT EVER.......2000-01-25

First - I hate political books that make it seem that you have to have an MBA to read it. But this book is intelligent, a reference guide, and a great book to which you will read great works of speeches. FDR, is a great idealist and essentially a great man. This is a great book, in which to read his thoughts.

The Essential Franklin Delano Roosevelt is by far the most comprehensive collection of that President's major works. Each and every piece presented in this book is historically relevant. Formatted in chronological order, Hunt takes his reader on a journey from Roosevelt's First Gubernatorial Inaugural Address to remarks Roosevelt gave to congress on the Yalta Conference days before his death. The Essential FDR is the perfect book for anyone from a Roosevelt scholar or research-paper-writing high school student. Almost 350 pages of anything quotable by one of history's greatest men. As an aside, John Gabriel Hunt's introduction is also quite informative and gives great background information. If you want FDR, you want this book!

To Catch The Snowflakes is one of the best books I've ever read and I've read plenty. I must say "Thank you" to the author. He's lived quite a life...and he tells quite a story. In the game of life, he's a winner...even though polio tried real hard to defeat him. He didn't allow that to happen.

The story that Mr. Schulenberg tells is one of hope, humor and acts as a constant reminder of the blessings in our lives. Though stricken with challenges, the author explains that each challenge was a stepping stone to greatness and fullfillment.
This story is a heartwarming tale of the strength of family and the endurance of family. It is a must-have and a must-read.

Hollywood: Pay Attention.......2004-02-26

I am amazed that anyone could pack so much into a little over 100 pages. I laughed. I cried. I was inspired. The next time I'm down and feel as though life is winning, I'll take this book from the shelf. Every high school in the country should require this book to be read by seniors before they are allowed to graduate and enter the world. Hollywood: pay attention. This book would make a terrific, a beautiful, an inspiring movie.

I did not like this book at all as it involved using templates and not rotary cutting. Very tedious. I returned the book. I wish the authors of these books would be more clear in stating whether these pattterns use templates. I received credit for it in a timely manner.

Templates.......2006-02-15

This is a nice book except it uses templates. I rotary cut as much as I can. This book even has templates for squares and rectangles - why in this age of rotary cutting? There should be a cross-reference for the template name and the size of the square or rectangle. I measured them in the book and put the sizes next to the template name. What a hassel. I'm keeping this book but I will not buy another book like this.

This book is NOT for speed demons or "machine quilters" who are into quilting for PRODUCTION work ... this is a book that teaches TECHNIQUE ... the old fashioned way ... by hand ... for FAMILY & FRIENDS or For YOURSELF ... cut it out By HAND ... measure everything twice ... cut it once ... When you are done you have an HEIRLOOM not another one just to SELL ...

Does not use speedy rotary cutting techniques.......2006-02-25

This book uses templates and it doesn't have a cross-reference for the shape and it's size. There are templates for squares even - I want to know what size they are. I have measured them and written the size on the template page so I can just rotary cut my squares and not use the template. A cross-reference should of been included in the book. I think this book is written for quilting techniques of years ago. It would of been a nice book back then, but not now. I should of returned this book.

I have always had seizures since I was a small child. I had no idea I could do more for myself than take the pills I was given by my doctor. I no longer have seizures since reading this book. I have lost my drivers on occasion due to seizures!!!

The information in this book should be more available to everyone!!! Doctors should be telling people some of the information in this book during their visits. The nutrition section was extremely important to me.

My new life has begun........2006-01-15

I have a completely new life now after reading this book and Treating Epilepsy Naturally by Patricia A. Murphy. These two books have so changed my life that I can hardly believe it. I wish I would have had these books over 20 years ago. But now, I have them and am so grateful. After having a seizure every week I am almost beside myself now that it has been over 6 weeks. And I haven't even tried everything in these books. Just a few. I wish I could give a medal to the authors. I wish I could express my thanks properly. If you have epilepsy or know someone who does, you won't regret reading these books and applying their advice. They are an answered prayer.

A Classic "Must Read" for epilepsy patients, their families and friends and health care providers.......2005-10-26

In spite of no new edition for ten years, this book is still highly relevent. The information on medication is a bit dated but everything else seems to be timeless.

In a world full of medical miracles people often expect a simple solution to their medical problems; i.e., "take a pill and everything will be alright." With epilepsy that is often not the case. There is so much more to the condition than just seizures. There is so much more to treating the disease than just taking pills. Most physicians are so pressed for time because of managed care and too few specialty providers that they rarely have time during an appointment to discuss the many aspects of epilepsy let alone the finer points of treating it.

This book addresses the many facets of epilepsy and suggests ways that individuals can take control of their disease. Most of the ideas are backed up with anecdotal evidence, but the concepts are extremely cogent and intellectually appealing.

Rather than listing the contents of the book I think it is sufficient to say that the book advocates a holistic approach to the person with epilepsy. I heartily endorse that idea. It will be up to the individual and their family to make that happen. Physicians can help by directing people to resources outside of the traditional "just take your meds" approach. It is good to have a balanced approach to this condition.

I highly recommend this book. It is extremely well written and is a joy to read. Of all of the books I have read on epilepsy (so far), it more than any other paints a broad picture of the disease and advocates a balanced approach (between traditional medicine and alternative methods) to helping the person take control of their disease process.

An excellent book.......2004-02-08

I bought this book back in 1995, and I still use it. It has chapters on foods and chemicals to avoid, exercises, relaxation... It is very helpful and my seizures have lessened. I cannot guarantee if they lessened due to this book, but I think so (o:

Very Good Book!.......2001-03-01

I really enjoyed reading this book. From biomedical information to deep relaxation techniques, Epilepsy, A New Approach, covers many aspects of living with seizures. It includes ways to encourage seizure reduction and gives the reader some positive feedback. I would definitely recommend this book for those who cannot have surgery. This book is full of useful information, and it is written very well.

What an inspiration this book was! Tina Le Marque has inspired me to search my souls deepest crevices for the same spirit this book contains and to transfer it to my own drawing pad. I applaud the author's art and talent as a writer, she had me in tears as well as laughing. After reading this book, I immediately read Tina Le Marque's first book "Warrior Woman" and give it the same applause. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who wants to ignite his or her own hidden creative spirit.

I was anxious to read this book because I've always enjoyed 18th and 19th century literature, and believed that the humor found in the works of Austen and Burney were overlooked and undermentioned. Author Bilger examines the works of Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth and Jane Austen, and posits that the humor they used was subversive -- laughter at the expense of the overbearing patriarchal culture in which they lived.

While this isn't exactly what I'd hoped it would be, it was more accessible than many scholarly works, and after I got into the rhythm and jargon of the academic writing, I found myself entertained as well as informed -- such a lovely combination.

Laughter is a commodity too often ignored and a tool too often overlooked, but the author makes her case that these three authors consciously used satire, burlesque and parody to criticize their culture while maintaining the guise of docile co-conspirators. Bilger begins with interesting chapters on women & comedy and Mary Shelley's feminism before discussing the lives of her subjects, their beliefs and their use of comedic technique and characters to undermine the dominant paradigm, as it were. Naive observers, female tricksters, competitive women, nimcompoop suitors and ignorant patriarchs are described and then illustrated with short excerpts from the many works by these talented authors -- in particular Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and Northanger Abbey; Burney's Camilla and The Wanderer; and Edgeworth's Belinda and Helen.

I thought the most interesting chapter was on "goblin humor", dark humor that is still considered distasteful by many and seems shocking when found in these quiet comedies of manners. Here the author displayed a mastery of comic theory as well as the literature, and made her case admirably, without descent into the jargon-laden victimization theory that dominates feminist film theory, for example. Rather, Bilger posits that Austen, Burney and Edgeworth found an outlet for what they could have considered a hopeless situation, and that they consciously and actively did their best to undermine the system in which they lived, reflecting and building upon the work of earlier feminists, and sending out beacons of camaraderie to women living under cultural and personal subjugation.
