5 out of 5 stars An essential for Lincoln Highway buffs, particularly in PA.......1998-06-25

Yes, those Rt. 66 folks have their road, but *the* primier highway of roadside Americana is the Lincoln Highway. Butko's book is an ideal guide to the Pennsylvania portion of the Lincoln Highway, pointing out most every present or defunct business, bypassed or neglected right-of-way, and historical point of interest along the route. The book describes the highway geographically, from east to west, allowing the reader to explore all at once or in various sections the Pennsylvania portion of the road that began America's love affair with the automobile. Filled with old photographs, this book is an excellent guide for any fan of history who might want see what remains of the early automobile era when automobiling was entertainment in itself.

4 out of 5 stars nostalgic roadside memories.......1998-06-01

Comapres to substance of the Rt-66 books. Especiall the legacy of attractions bypassed by time. Some like Ligonier Pool have been salvaged, & will reopen..but most drive-ins are gone

5 out of 5 stars A must for any historic highway fan!.......1998-03-17

Brian's book, not only gives you a great overview of the historic Lincoln Highway across Pennsylvania, but what it looks like today and the heritage of this great national monument to free enterprise. No student of the Lincoln Highway can call his bookself complete without this book.

    Book Description

The Lincoln Highway, established in 1913 as the first roadway _to cross the United States, continues to change. This new, fully revised and updated edition of the successful guidebook to the route in Pennsylvania reflects those changes, focusing on recent trends on the highway, such as the appearance of retro buildings. The book describes what life was like along the old highway-with its stainless-steel diners, mom-and-pop businesses, spectacular scenery, and roadside attractions-and reveals how much of the past is still around. Filled with all-new vintage postcards and photos and maps for travelers following the original route.

5 out of 5 stars Great Second Edition.......2003-10-11

I greatly enjoyed the first edition of this book. The first edition seems to have piqued interest in the Lincoln in Pennsylvania. The second edition includes many more vintage pictures of scenes from the Lincoln and interviews from people connected with the highway. If you've ever driven a section of the Lincoln, Brian's writing will have you visualizing the journey in your minds eye. The new information and pictures made a second edition not only necessary but also welcome!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide to a great old road.......2003-02-26

The Lincoln Highway across Pennsylvania has something for almost every visitor. Brian Butko has seen, and describes, it all.

The Lincoln enters Pennsylvania from Trenton, NJ across a fragile 19th-century bridge, then approaches Philadelphia on historic Roosevelt Boulevard. From Philadelphia to Lancaster it follows the 18th-century Lancaster Pike, whose mileposts still sit almost unnoticed on the shoulder. Robert E. Lee's troops marched along the Lincoln en route to the Battle of Gettysburg.

From Chambersburg to Ligonier (with the glaring exception of Breezewood), the Lincoln is a driver's road: two lanes, winding up and down hills and through small towns in which time stopped a half-century ago. Many views from 75-year-old postcards still look the same today. Further west, the route traverses some of Pittsburgh's oldest suburbs, then promenades through downtown Pittsburgh en route to nicking the West Virginia panhandle at Chester.

This second, revised and updated edition of Brian Butko's guide masterfully recounts the history of the Lincoln Highway across Pennsylvania. Those driving the road will learn the history of every significant site they pass...as well as those, like Bill's Place and the Ship Hotel, which no longer remain.

I-80 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike are two of the dullest drives in the eastern United States. Take a little extra time and follow the Lincoln Highway instead -- and do it with this readable but comprehensive guide.

      Book Description

John Adams-lawyer, congressman, diplomat, vice president, and president-had one of the most varied and productive public careers of America's Revolutionary generation. His many achievements, taken for granted or even discounted through much of the twentieth century, have in the past decade attracted the increasingly enthusiastic attention of historians, political scientists, and the larger public. This collection of essays, the first ever on its subject, provides unique insights on Adams's life, from youth through old age, and his vital contributions to the founding of the nation. An introduction by the editor lays out the breadth of Adams's life and career in general, setting the stage for focused explorations of the essential aspects of his rich legacy, including topics that have seldom, if ever, been examined in any detail.

An indispensable resource for any reader who wishes to understand Adams or his world, the volume includes nine essays, all by leading authorities on the man and his era: "John Adams and the Massachusetts Provincial Elite," by William Pencak; "Before Fame: Young John Adams and Thomas Jefferson," by John Ferling; "John Adams and the 'Bolder Plan,'" by Gregg L. Lint; "In the Shadow of Washington: John Adams as Vice President," by Jack D. Warren; "The Presidential Election of 1796," by Joanne B. Freeman; "The Disenchantment of a Radical Whig: John Adams Reckons with Free Speech," by Richard D. Brown; "'Splendid Misery': Abigail Adams as First Lady," by Edith B. Gelles; "John Adams and the Science of Politics," by C. Bradley Thompson; and "Presidents as Historians: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson," by Herbert Sloan. Each opens a new window on a historical figure poised for fresh appreciation and significance.

As the mother of an autistic child, you go through the phases when you first hear the words: disbelief, excruciating sadness, frantic research, and then you hit that point where you realize that your child is the same person he was the day you heard the diagnosis.

If you are the parent of an autistic child, wait until you hit that last stage before you read this book.

Mr. Narayanan relates his experiences growing up autistic. He gives us that peek into the mind that may seem closed to us, may even seem not to be working at all on a level we can understand. The insights provided by this man are invaluable both to the autistic community and to those who spend their lives caring for and loving persons with autism. His descriptions of the treatment he received, Ayurveda, and its impact on his ability to communicate are fascinating. This is a stellar read, and has made me seek more information on Ayurveda and also on other biographies of the non-verbal autistic adult.

Cichlids are a fascinating family of fishes, with high intelligence and complex behaviors. Robert Goldstein has written a solid introduction to keeping and breeding a wide variety of these fascinating species.

Even though it is an introduction, however, it is not a beginner-level book. Much of the material is presented in a way that assumes more knowledge of aquaria than most beginners would have.

If you like cichlids, though (Discus, freshwater Angelfish, Oscars, Mbuna to name a *very* few,) you would enjoy this book as a supplement to other materials.

              Book Description

The world of optical illusions has fascinated artists for centuries, and quiltmaker Karen Combs has been intrigued by them for years. In Optical Illusions for Quilters, she unravels the mysteries of optical illusitons as applied to quilting, some of them for the first time. Masterpiece quilts are used to explain each illusion and quilters are shown how to apply these principles to their work. Though Karen's focus is on quilting, these principles can be applied to other creative mediums. In an easy to understand manner, she encourages readers to use their imaginations, listen to their inner voices, and apply their new knowledge as they become masters of illusions. AUTHORBIO: Karen Combs is an internationally-known quilter, teacher, author, and designer whose students nominated her for Quilt Teacher of the Year in 1995 and 2000. In high demand as a teacher (she began teaching quilting in 1989), Karen encourages her students, makes learning fun, and makes the complex easy to understand! Karen is fascinated with optical illusions in quilts, a fascination that has become the subject of her many workshops, magazine articles, and books. REVIEW: In Optical Illusions for Quilters, Karen Combs provides quilters the ultimate reference, shy of formal training in art, for mastering not only perspective but a wide array of other 'illusions' that can add depth, motion, and interest to quilts

Gave me some great ideas for expanding my creativity with dimension in my quilts. Will use one design immediately for a quilt for my six year old grandson, he will love it.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the novice!.......2004-02-18

I was very disappointed. Book is VERY technical without much background. I think you need a very strong background and experience in drafting your own patterns. No real practical advice. I need something that will take me to the very beginning and bring me forward, not start me at the finish line.

              4 out of 5 stars inspirational.......2004-02-03

this was a wonderful book. I found it to be full of wonderful examples of how these illusions were accomplished in different ways. And what a better way to be inspired but by the many examples of art in action.

I was a little dissappointed with the pattern and instructions given at the end...but not enough to prevent me from buying this book. I find that most of my inspirations comes from viewing how others accomplished the techniques and their completed works than simply by a lesson and pattern alone. I would definately recommend this book to anyone seeking to quilt outside the lines.

              3 out of 5 stars very technical.......2003-08-01

I have made 2 of Karen Combs patterns and while they turned out well, I would have hated to have tried them as an inexperienced quilter. Her directions are not that easy to follow and require much rereading. The book is very technical. She does wonderful designs but really needs to have the pattern instructions written by someone else and it is not her forte.

5 out of 5 stars The Illustrated Quilts are Worth the Price of the Book Alone.......2003-05-24

Karen Combs does a fine job gathering examples of each "tool" used to create illusions. I've just read through the book and I feel very inspired to piece a cube. The quilts she's chosen to illustrate different techniques are amazing. If you're up for something different, this book is for you.

                Book Description

The park of lawns, trees, and serpentine lakes in a picturesque composition of greens has long been viewed as the enduring achievement of eighteenth-century English landscape art. Yet this conventional view of the picturesque style ignores the colorful flowers and flowering shrubs that graced the landscape garden of the Georgian era.

While the book is primarily devoted to the historical reconstruction of the formal and horticultural characteristics of "theatrical" shrubberies and flowerbeds, it also aims to animate the world of the eighteenth-century pleasure ground. Mark Laird shows how the unwritten lore of planting design was passed down by generation after generation of gardeners and discusses the interaction of landscape designer, client, nurseryman, land agent, and gardener in modifying and transforming the geometric layouts of previous generations. He traces the development of planting design theory and practice from Batty Langley to Capability Brown and William Chambers, and demonstrates how an English mania for flowering shrubs and conifers from eastern North America helped create the distinctive planting forms of the Georgian pleasure ground.

Laird offers readers a wealth of visual and literary materials--from contemporary paintings, engravings, poetry, essays, and letters to more prosaic household accounts and nursery bills--to revolutionize our understanding of the English landscape garden as a powerful cultural expression. Through his original watercolor reconstructions of planting forms and through delightful descriptions of seasonal change and sensuous effect, he makes the gardens come alive, thus recognizing both the palpable qualities and aesthetic sophistication of eighteenth-century planting design.

Laird's training as a landscape architect, garden conservator, and historian gives the book remarkable breadth and depth. It is a benchmark work, uniquely bridging the gap in landscape history between design and planting and horticultural studies.

                5 out of 5 stars Sanity Saver.......2007-09-26

I've had to recommend this to so many friends--hey, I live in Los Angeles! Its a life saving book that constantly empowers you to make choices and reminds you that you are making the decision to hang in there and not to play the victim role--especially to yourself. Smart, savvy, tough love--with a really loving delivery. A gem!

                4 out of 5 stars Practical Advice.......2007-06-01

This book gives practical and down to earth advice about dating a divorced man. I really enjoyed the book, it helped me to realize where to set my priorities.

                5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!.......2006-07-20

This book is great. Fortunitly, I bought it the day things started to get hairy in my relationship, and it was a LIFESAVER. The humor is great, and you cant beat the honesty. It does seem confusing at first, but that is because you have to choose to move foward with your relationship or stick it out, and they help you to decide that without making the choice for you. You know its a good book when you highlight the key sections and review it later and almost all of the book is highlighted. It also touches on other items like attachement, needy, and a few others that play into meeting a un-divorced man. Kudos to this book!

                5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2005-11-12

I read and re-read this book when I was unfortunately involved with a guy who was supposedly weeks away from finalizing his divorce. They had been separated for several years and she wasn't contesting the divorce, but he dragged the situation out for an entire year and put me through hell and then ended up getting back together with his wife. And until I read this book, I actually thought I was the only person who had endured something like that. While I was reading it the first time, I remember thinking, what did these people do? Look through my windows? It was such a relief to find out that I wasn't crazy and that every man who puts someone through this hell goes about it exactly the same way. I only wish I had read it a year sooner and saved myself a year of agony. Anybody who has gotten involved with someone who is separated or in the process of divorcing needs to read this book. Honestly, you'll think the authors have been looking in your windows, because you will see yourself on every page.

4 out of 5 stars Proceed with caution, both with your new love and this book!.......2005-07-07

I gave the book four stars becaue it was helpful for me. I did however have to put the book down more than once because it freaked me out. I started reading the book to late into my relationship and things had progressed further than "the plan". I almost lossed the best things that has happened to me because I tried to catch up with the book. Just remember that every relationship is different, and not all can be covered by one book. Go with your gut girls! Just remeber you can't fix all of his problems with the ex, so don't even try.

                    Book Description

The cityscapes presented in this collection of paintings by Bernardo Bellotto feature 23 exceptional views of Warsaw. Detail and aesthetic value distinguish Belloto's celebrated cycle of landscape panoramas. The breadth and depth of the paintings provide such a comprehensive picture of the city that they were used at the end of World War II to help rebuild Warsaw. The moment in Poland's history is rendered with such incredible accuracy and specificity that it will be of interest to historians as well as art devotees.
