Judging a book by its cover is usually a dangerous practice. However, Ball and his publisher have created a book that is as attractive within as without. From the standpoint of layout, the most striking feature is that the colorful plates are complemented by text pages of approximately the same weight. This feature avoids the awkwardness often found in softbound texts interspersed with photographic sections.
The glossary is adequate, if not thorough, allowing for armchair reading by dilletantes in most cases. However, one will occasionally confront within a definition presented an unfamiliar word not elsewhere defined.
The only other awkwardness encountered in the American edition were the occasional British usages and grammatical anomalies. "Colour" and "spoilt" do not grate on the ear nearly as readily as "awoken." But the presence of "vividest" and "have begin" makes the reader wonder about either the book editor's thoroughness or familiarity with elements of grammar and composition.
In sum, I found Ball's work a thorough and colorful introduction to the topic with only the occasional flaw.

A must for understanding the rich history of Syria..........2000-06-25

This book is compact in size but filled with descriptions and information. It contains nearly 100 colored photographs and numerous charts and diagrams. It starts out giving a concise historical background of the region then divides Syria into geographical areas. The author has devoted most of his description to the chapters on Damascus, Aleppo and Palmyra but no part of Syria is left untouched. I was particularly fascinated by his account of the Stylite priest St. Simeon. The only thing lacking, in my opinion, is a glossary of the many arabic terms in the book which the average western traveller would not be familiar with. Every summer I travel to Damascus and before I go I always re-read parts of this book to refresh myself with the rich history of Syria.

There have been a number of slams against stock options by people who think they are at the heart of corporate scandals. This readable and thorough book points out that sharing ownership broadly has been a tremendous benefit to many companies, although a few have abused it. Those of us who have seen companies grow dramatically through the efforts of incentived employees know that options are the best system devised for sharing ownership broadly, and that current attempts to restrict them will do more harm than good for the US economy. This book carefully documents both the benefits and abuses, and should be useful for entrepreneurs who want to build companies, and for regulators who want to really curb abuses while saving the benefits -- and chance for broad based wealth creation -- that employee ownership represents.

Timely examination of employee ownership.......2003-01-16

This is a very carefully crafted and persuasive book. The authors do a great job of laying out the argument for why sharing ownership broadly with employees is good for companies, shareholders, and employees, while concentrating ownership in just a few executives is a bad idea.The book is especially important now with all the debate going on about stock options, which they point out are just one of the ways companies can share ownership. The book provides the most comprehensive data on this subject to date, so its arguments are not just based on preconceived notions. It deserves a wide audience, especially among corporate decision makers.

This is really a great book for CPA exam. All the important accounting materials are covered in the book, and the wording is easy to understand. If you have an accounting background and need a quick reference guide to refresh your memories, this is a great book. The authors also provide practical tips in boxes to remind you what to watch out for in particular circumstances. In a nutshell, it basically cramps a few years worth of accounting courses into one very compact book.

For those of you who do not have an accounting background, this book will not be for you since it does not go into any great length to explain any accounting concepts. It basically assume you already know your stuff and simply needs a refresher.

The ladies in my quilting group went crazy over this book and the new techniques it showed them. It has 24 original three-dimensional flower designs in fabric and silk ribbon. You learn to make a pompom dahlia, a lily, kalanchoe, hollyhock, China aster, an Australian waratah, passion flower, sweet pea, cockscomb, malaleuca, and others. She shows each flower in a finished project with detailed instructions to make the small quilt.
There are also patterns for six purses so you can make your own elegant evening bags or give them as gifts.
The steps are show in drawings with color so it is easy to see the folding and which side you are working with.
The techniques taught are appliqué, Japanese sashiko stitching, beading and embellishment, all-in-one backings and borders, and others.

I was so excited to hear that Kumiko Sudo had a new flower book out! I loved Fabled Flowers and I like this one even better! The photos are beautiful and the patterns are so nicely laid out that I could follow them without any problem. For a visual learner like me, that--and lots of pictures--is exactly what I need. I made two of the flower designs the first weekend after buying the book. I used some of my favorite floral fabrics and they look wonderful. This was a classic book.......2006-02-21

When this book was published in 1990, it virtually created a new genre: the local tree guide. By combining clear, simple descriptions of hundreds of local area species (about 30 native, and the rest ornamental) and providing information on where you could go see the tree, it became possible for people to both learn a wide variety of trees and to learn more about the natural heritage of a place - in this case, Seattle. A second edition of this book has just (February 2006) been published; it contains almost twice as many species, many more color photographs, and a far longer list of specimen trees.

This is an excellent book. It's informative, but very sensitive. I would highly recommend it to any moms out there that are being abused in any way, shape or form. Especially if you don't feel your kids are being affected by you being abused. Because guess what?! They are!

Not Targeted to Witnessess/Survivors of Domestic Violence.......2005-12-29

This book seems excellent for mothers who are either in or survivors of domestic violence ("DV"). However, if you are an adult who survived being raised in a home permeated by DV and you are looking for a book on healing the wounds, this is not the book for you. It gives great advice to assist mothers who have young children. I simply believe that I was not a part of the target audience for this particular book. I was looking for information for individuals who had witnessed repeated incidence of DV throughout their childhood and were attempting to heal the wounds. This is not the book for that purpose.

Finally! Moms are saved!.......2004-08-10

I'm 5 years out of my marriage but my husband finally succeeded in getting my grown children to treat me without respect when I worked out of the country for a year. Little by little he talked me down, made fun of me, got them to belittle me - until when I came home, and they did the same to my face, I had PTSD flashbacks of his abuse of me. I wound up on a crisis hotline and this book was recommended to me.

My desperate cry was, When is it going to end? Will I die or get a terminal illness from stress before he leaves me alone? How do I get my babies back? And why aren't there laws against this and legal recourse for us moms?

This book explained that he would never quit trying to redeem himself for his abusive actions (both physical and emotional) by casting blame and doubt on me. He would try to ruin my reputation, ruin my health - do ANYthing to ultimately "WIN".

These guys don't care about "fair", they don't care about "truth", they don't care about anyone in the world but themselves, Bancroft makes us to understand. And, he informed me, they WILL try to turn your children - the ones YOU raised, loved and gave up your whole youth for - against you.

But, he says, don't worry because they will see him for what he is in time.

He spares no words describing these hard-core domestic criminals. He is appalled by their lack of morals and conscience and his heart is with the mother who must struggle against an appalling lack of laws to protect families from abusive men.

This is a must-read for any woman with children still in or finally out of an abusive marriage. He covers the prejudice in the laws, the judges, the lawyers and how the whole male-worshipping world has made the life of female and child victims of abuse difficult. And then he gives you tips on how to conquer this situation.

I hear Bancroft is now running from state to state to try to reform the laws. Everyone should read this book and follow his advice and lend their support.

Our children aren't safe - and our women certainly are NOT liberated - as long as the laws remain as they are.
We need:
strict laws against ALL abuse with HEAVY penalties,
laws providing recourse to SUE FOR EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL DAMAGES,
laws that guarantee lifetime alimony to provide men with incentive to participate in the success of their marriages (something women's lib has been working to get rid of so that we must work even with children),
child support laws that give children their mother, so a woman can leave an abusive marriage without destroying the children in the poverty that ensues today.

Women's standard of living drops and men's goes up some 40% after divorce!

Virtually every day in the fall of 1907, Rainer Maria Rilke returned to a Paris gallery to view a Cezanne exhibition. Nearly as frequently, he wrote dense and joyful letters to his wife, Clara Westhoff, expressing his dismay before the paintings and his ensuing revelations about art and life.

Rilke was knowledgeable about art and had even published monographs, including a famous study of Rodin that inspired his New Poems. But Cezanne's impact on him could not be conveyed in a traditional essay. Rilke's sense of kinship with Cezanne provides a powerful and prescient undercurrent in these letters -- passages from them appear verbatim in Rilke's great modernist novel, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. Letters on Cezanne is a collection of meaningfully private responses to a radically new art.

How to create in seeing as poet and artist .......2005-02-27

Rilke understands Cezanne as one ' who lived in the innermost center of his work for forty years'. The old man who he describes being thrown stones at by children on his way to his studio where he worked and worked, and only worked from the time he found his vocation at the age of thirty, is the example to Rilke of the totally dedicated artist. This artist has that kind of patience which slowly lets his work enfold, layer upon layer. In this as always with Rilke remarkably beautiful and haunting collection of letters he tells of his encounter with the work of Cezanne and how the true artist brings into fuller being the object he sees and creates. Rilke is quoted in the introduction as he talks of " the scales of an infinitely responsive conscience.. which so incorruptibly reduced a reality to its color content that that reality resumed a new existence in a beyond of color, without any previous memories".
This statement so suggestive is typical of the Rilkean text which seems like poetry itself to offer more meanings than any single reading can grasp.
My brief remarks comment upon a few of those suggestions. I believe readers of this work will be inspired to seeing , reading, and in their own minds through the reading, creating of their own on a higher level.

Letters about the spirituality of art.......2001-01-16

The encounter with the work of Cezanne was one of the milestones in the life of the poet Rilke. The letters which are collected here show why. Rilke, like Cezanne, was a man who was religious in an unconventional way. He was not interested in any particular concept of God, but in the process of discerning the divine in the sheer existence of things as they are: "All talk is misunderstanding. Insight is just in work." What he admired most in Cezanne's work was his "devout objectivity", the ability to let objects speak for themselves without the intellectual interference by the artist and without preconceived notions. Rilke felt that when Cezanne painted the mountain Sainte Victoire, for example, he wanted to show the essence of the mountain, the mountain pure and simple, nothing more, nothing less.

The German edition of the Letters on Cezanne contains an excellent afterword which quotes the philosopher Martin Heidegger who wrote, "we come too late for the Gods, and too early for being," meaning we do not live in the safety of believing in the Gods any more, and we do not trust in simply being yet. Rilke was acutely aware of this state of suspension, and the collection of his letters on Cezanne gives us an idea of how Rilke as an artist intended to make sense of this life in suspension.

Painting thru the eyes of a poet.......1999-10-14

This book gives one a glimpse of a painters genius as seen through the eyes of a poet. Rilke possesses the poetic sensitivity to shed some light on Cezannes paintings. This along with Delacroixs Journal and Van Goghs Letters to Theo really afford one a literary appreciation of the great European artists.
