          Book Description

The title might have been written by Mao himself. Instead, it was dictated by the revealing, intimate, never-before-published recollections of Li Yinqiao, Mao's bodyguard, and brought to light by the author Quan Yanchi.

After fifteen years of devoted service, Li received this request from Mao: "If what happens in my family is a secret to others, it is not a secret to you. But don't write about me while I'm still alive; wait until I die, and write truthfully when you do." For the first time, the personal, inside story of China's dynamic leader and world statesman is told - the life and thought of Mao, the husband, father, comrade-in-arms, the peasant's son. The recollections, only now made public in English, provide the reader with a refreshingly different perspective from any of the many other works about Mao. Highlighting the book are photographs, published here for the first time.

          Book Description

Jeanne Achterberg is an internationally known authority on the use of imagery to heal the body. She is best known for developing the technique known as guided visualization, and she was recently featured in Time magazine as one of the top innovators in the field of alternative medicine. In 1999 she was diagnosed with ocular melanoma, a rare and often deadly form of cancer of the eye. Lightning at the Gate is the remarkable story of her illness and healing—a deeply personal memoir that is at turns haunting, humorous, biting, and exhilarating. This engaging and entertaining book demonstrates how a combination of critical thought, creativity, inner vision, and friendship can lead to profound healing. In Lightning at the Gate, Achterberg writes, "The only way one stays alive after a serious diagnosis of cancer is to find one's vision." This captivating memoir documents her process of doing just that. Choosing to view her cancer as a metaphor, she draws on dreamwork, shamanism, healing imagery, prayer, rituals, songs, immune-stimulation therapy, and the loving care of friends to cure her illness. Lightning at the Gate ends in affirming Achterberg's core belief that we are healed not by medicine but by the bonds we create with each other: care, love, trust, hope, belief, and all the other invisible facets that have lost favor in modern health care. Readers will benefit from seeing how a leader in alternative medicine approaches her own illness: how she weighs the information and choices presented to her by the Western medical establishment; how she advocates for herself; and how she finds her own, individual path back to health. Lightning at the Gate also offers fascinating first-hand accounts of cutting-edge alternative therapies. Also included is a valuable resource section listing books, websites, and organizations offering information on holistic methods of healing. This book is sure to become a must-read for anyone interested in alternative medicine and the healing arts.

4 out of 5 stars Seeing the Light.......2007-08-03

A respected authority on the use of guided imagery to heal, Dr. Jeanne Achterberg writes an engaging story about her harrowing and year-long journey through physical pain and spiritual darkness into wellness.

She uses her suspected diagnosis for ocular melanoma - a rare and potentially deadly cancer of the internal layer of the eye - as the literal and symbolic theme to anchor a story that is part thriller, memoir, medical mystery, self-help resource and alternative medicine advocacy.

In about 50 short, distinct chapters, Achterberg guides the reader through the impact of this catastrophic disease on relationships in her "orbit" - self, others, the alternative healing community, as well as with the mainstream medical profession.

Achterberg, as reflects her background, credits shamanic and prayerful influences with healing her eye. Unfortunately, since her diagnosis was never medically confirmed, it's not possible to establish that cause-effect relationship.

This lack of perspective reduces her compelling story to a largely anecdotal account. The promise of alternative healing to transform people's lives has not been realized on a broad scale due to the lack of cross collaboration between the alternative and scientific communities. Achterberg was uniquely positioned to bridge the alternative/mainstream divide. Instead, a story of triumph uncomfortably comes across as an "us vs. them" contest

However, Lightning At the Gate is the only book out there that talks about ocular melanoma from a personal perspective. For many diagnosed with this cancer, that's the only story that really matters. For more information about this rare cancer, please check out the See A Cure Foundation website found at seeacure.com

5 out of 5 stars Searing, honest, funny, great.......2002-02-15

Jeanne Achterberg breaks the mold of illness memoirs and healing tracts with her searing honesty, wit, fresh prose style, insight, and sheer spiritual brazenness. What a joy to read, a powerful investigation of the sorrowful, tough, often elevating experiences of this wounded healer going deeper to try to heal herself, and the personal losses and gains that occur along the way. Bless her for being so nakedly honest in sharing the hard truths about her marriage and personal life in a way that doesn't make the reader feel like a voyeur but like a dear friend who needs to know about the intertwined tentacles of her life as she lives it, and as she tries to extend and expand it both by turning within and by reaching out. Actherberg helps us understand that illness can be a metaphor; it all depends on what metaphor we construct, what truths it holds, and what we do about it.

Quilling, by Jane Jenkins, gives a lot of information in a small space. The instructions are easy to follow, and the illustrations are clear. It is a book that both beginners (like me) and advanced quilling artists will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Basics.......2006-08-31

This book definitely illustrates quilling skills that will guide you beyond the basics. Photos in the book demonstrate various tools which could enable you to create more precise shapes. The projects in this book are broken down into each essential paper shape and element with numbered steps. Specific tips and techniques are provided for each of the basic shapes. Ultimately you are able to manipulate the paper with far greater control. Once assembled you will discover beautiful art pieces with a delicate filigree appearance. The projects in this book are more sophisticated and offer you designs that yield heirloom-quality results.

                        5 out of 5 stars Extremely inspirational!.......2006-01-02

As a beginner, this book will ensure I'm not a beginner for long! What wonderful illustrations and instructions! I had no idea there were this many techniques and styles. It's nice to know there really is no limit to what one can create with a little knowledge and a lot of imagination. Highly recommended.

                        5 out of 5 stars A little advanced.......2005-08-19

Some of these patterns are truely lovely. I especially liked the Victorian Fan. Most of the book deals with somewhat more advanced techniques. Examples of quilled dolls and boxes look a little beyond the beginner, but there are a number of other motifs that should appeal to the novice.

Making things with the intention of giving them to the less fortunate is not a new concept but certainly there are no other books out there that focus on great, easy to do and practical projects. The poetry and inspirational verses and quotes round it all out to make it quite exceptional. Individuals and groups alike of all ages will find it a good place to find ideas.

The gift-giving ideas in this book are incredible, though I'm not a homemaker, so I don't have time to make a tasty treat AND construct such an elaborate vessel in which to transport the gift.

I haven't tried any of the recipes, but the Turkish delight is on my list!

i think i own every single book there is on kitchen gifting. this one is a very good one. i do recommend it. but it also makes me realize i need to write my own. this book goes too far into packaging. i just don't think the packaging is the gift, its what's inside. but still, it is one of the better ones.

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR THE FUN OF IT! IT'S EXCITING TO DO SOME OF THE TESTS TO SEE WHAT THE SEX OF YOUR BABY WILL BE WILE YOUR PREGNANT. SOME OF THE TEST YOU CANT DO BECAUSE YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE ALL OF THE STUFF YOU NEED THATS WHY I GOVE IT 3 STARS...BUT OVERALL IT'S GREAT & WOULD MAKE A GREAT GIFT TO YOUR FRIEND OR LOVED ONE WHO IS EXPECTING.

I'm pregnant with my 3rd child and we just bought our 3rd one of these books. We chose not to find out the gender with the previous two, and we won't with this one either. Instead, we bought this book and had fun as a family trying to guess based on some silly folklore/wives tales. I wonder how some of these "tests" originated! They're a hoot! Anyway, each child has their book tucked away in their keepsakes... I don't even recall if the book was right or wrong. My advice: don't buy the book if you want to know the real answer. Book Description

A concise overview of sociology's greatest classic thinker. Weber emerges as a multisided intellectual personality, whose intellectual ambivalence is related to a neurotic breakdown in mid career and to the compromises he was forced to make among the conflicting politievanscal and intellectual currents of his time. Here we see what kinds of philosophical idealism Weber favored and what kinds he rejected, as well as his position on the "battle of methods" among the economists of his day. Weber's famous "Protestant Ethic" thesis is put in proper perspective as an intellectual gambit in one particular period of his life, rather than as his central achievement. Weber's overall view of social change is examined, drawing on several of his crucial but little-known works, on the sociology of ancient agrarian societies and on the long chain of organizational conditions that finally led to modern capitalism. Also treated are Weber's major works on the sociology of religion and his contributions to systematic theory, especially social stratification. The many strands of Weber's theorizing, and his tremendous scope of comparisons across world history, are here brought into a clear and manageable focus. "Randall Collins is the leading sociological theorist of his generation. He has also done more than anyone else to use and develop Weberian sociology. Accordingly we expect much from Collins on Weber and Max Weber does not disappoint." --Whitney Pope, Indiana University "A lively, efficient, reliable interpretation, captivating for the novice, provocative for the expert. . . . Typical Collins." --Alan Sica, University of Kansas "A good introductory survey of Weber's major writings. It is interesting reading and highly informative." --Contemporary Sociology "A good capsule biography . . . very readable . . . honors clarity, style, and the value of popular understanding." --The Madison Independent Books in Review "Ideal for an introductory course on Weber." --Ethics

I want to give a shout out to Henri Edward Dongieux who authored the Amazon.com guide to "get to know Weber and Habermas". I want to give my stand disclaimer: I am not a sociologist or a student of sociology, just a general reader with an interest in the history of ideas.

Funny story about this book: I bought Weber's theory of social and economic organization (with the foreword by Talcott Parsons). I don't know what I was thinking there. I read about thirty pages of Parsons introduction to Theory and was like, "forget this."

So then the next day I'm surfing around Amazon trying to figure out how I'm going to figure out Weber and I see the above mentioned list. Well, Henri was right: this book is THE place to start if you're looking to access the ideas of Weber.

One further digression before I actually review the book itself: Weber is hard to access for a couple of reasons: First, all his stuff has been translated from the German. This is compounded by the fact that Weber, despite his highly rigorous thought, was kind of making up terminology as he went and also by the fact that German has tons of words that don't translate well into English.
Second, Weber kind of died before he finished pulling together the various strands of his grand theory together, leaving his work uncomplete.

So, preliminary matters aside, I will move on to a description of the book. Since this is the first review of this work on Amazon (and how can that be?). I will provide a non-judgmental description of content and then a few observations.

The book is divided into three Parts. Part One is called "German Society and The Protestant Ethic". Part Two is "Society, Religion, and Secular Ethic: A Comparitive Study of Civilisations" and Part Three is "Domination, Organization, and Legitimacy: Max Weber's Political Sociology". Before Part One, Bendix includes an introduction and a chapter on Weber's "Career and Personal Orientation". That first chapter is most illuminating and serves to ground Weber in place and time.

The first part of the book is divided into two chapters. The first chapter talks about his very interesting early studies of eastern german agarian society and the various german stock exchanges. Bendix refers to these two early studies over and over through out the book. The second chapter of the first part of the book discusses Weber's most popular and well known ideas about the protestant work ethic and the spirit of capitalism. Having laid out the touchstones of Weber's work, Bendix moves into part two, which concern Weber's studies of world religion.

Part two deals exclusively with Weber's interest in world religion. Bendix devotes a chapter each to his studies of China, India and Palestine. Bendix notes that it is obvious that Weber's main interest was in the roots of the west that he found in Palestine and so the chapters on China and India are of limited use (except as a guide to what Weber THOUGHT about China and Indian religion. Bendix concludes part two with a chapter summarizing Weber's "sociology of religion".

Part three has a similar structure to part two. Bendix runs off a couple of chapters on charsmatic domination and traditional domination as a means to explicate Weber's theories of "Legal Domination" which represent, perhaps, Weber's main achievment. Again, Bendix points out that Weber's interest in chasmatic domination and traditional domination are really only "foils" for his overriding interest in "legal domination", in the same way that his studies of India and China are foils for his interest in the society of ancient Palestine.

In part three, Bendix also includes a couple of chapters that tie the book together and link the three parts, as well as a further attempt to ground Weber in the thought of his day.

OK, so that is the descriptive part. Now, some observations:

First off, as someone who really didn't know anything about Weber's thought (outside of a cursory understanding of his thesis in the "Spirit of Capitalism"), I found this book to be immensely compelling.

One can dismiss all of Weber's substantive conclusions about the nature of society and government and still be Wowed by the tremendous influence he has had on all social thinkers in the past century. I now see Weber's influence everywhere I look!

I also feel like any further attempts to read Weber will be made about a thousand times easier becaue I have read this book.

Although I read all but about twenty pages of this five hundred page book, I believe one could derive the same meaning from reading chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 12,13, and 15, while skipping the rest.

This book also has a handy index!

Karl Lowith's study of Max Weber and Karl Marx is a key text in modern interpretations of the theme of alienation in Marxist theory and the subject of rationalization in Weber's sociology. Lowith's philosophical approach, a product of Heidegger's existentialism, shows how both Marx and Weber work toward a common "life-philosophy." Lowith's analysis of the philosophical anthropology of Marxist theory and sociology also demonstrates that much of the ideological dispute between these two branches of thought is the result of a mutual misunderstanding. Lowith's book remains the best short introduction to the differences and similarities between Weber and Marx. This edition includes a preface from Professor Bryan S. Turner, in which he demonstrates the book's relevance to contemporary sociology.

Lowith's 1932 essay on Marx and Weber remains the definitive statement of the deep commonalities between these two thinkers. That is, it argues that Weber's central concern is to develop a fundamental theory of capitalism, as with Marx. For decades, it was "necessary" to attempt to parry Marx with Weber. Lowith's stood as an accusation of "bad faith" with regard to all such attempts, especially those who would evacuate Weber of all critique, even if only existential. Derek Sayer's "Capitalism and Modernity" is perhaps most in the spirit of this minor masterpiece.

                                              Book Description

One of the world’s preeminent Max Weber scholars here presents a comprehensive analysis of Weber’s ambiguous stance toward modernity considered from a normative, theoretical, and historical point of view. The book is in two parts. Part One scrutinizes Weber’s worldview, and Part Two considers his unfinished project on the sociology of religion.

This book is a rich source for Native American and Moravian history. The 1772-1781 diaries remain largely untapped by American scholars because they have not been available in English translation. Publication of this modern scholarly edition, therefore, will have a major impact on the field of early American history. This edition contains a cornucopia of ethnographic and historical information about the Delawares and neighboring tribes in the upper Ohio Valley during the Revolutionary era. The editors have done an excellent job of identifying and expanding the knowledge of many of the important figures from this period. This volume will be welcomed by any scholar interested in the early history of Ohio or western Pennsylvania-a most valuable addition to the collections of published primary materials on these subjects.

John Patrick Diggins has been a professional historian of the retreat of the American left for many years, most recently in The Promise of Pragmatism. Now he turns his attention to the rather pessimistic European figure of Max Weber (1864-1920). Weber regarded capitalism as, at best, an "iron cage" of comfortable boredom that destroyed the spirit. The inspiration for his famous The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism came from his 1904 visit to the U.S., where he was impressed and appalled by the deep connection between the Puritan work ethic and business success. Diggins clearly shares much of Weber's viewpoint, and expertly conveys his ideas on religion and ideology, authority and freedom, politics and ethics, and other diverse topics including Judaism and eroticism.

While the treatment of Weber's life and thoughts is quite useful and rather well written, the text contains over thirty (30)errors of German and Latin expressions. These are orthographical,
wrong gender endings, word distortions beyond recognition, etc.
Even historical names, like Leibknecht (for Karl Liebknecht) and Sombardt(for Werner Sombart) have been mangled.
For a work with "academic" pretensions -- the author is a professor at CCNY -- this is regrettable. One wonders what the numerous editors, proofreaders, and so on have done other than
base their "imprimatur" on self-attested expertise.

I certainly agree with the earlier reviewer from Portugal as to the high quality of Diggins' book. However, the reviewer is wrong about the term "iron cage." Weber very clearly refers to capitalism as an "iron cage" in the powerful concluding pages of his book "The Protestant Ethic and the Sprit of Capitalism." Weber both admired and feared the economic system that he saw as our fate. In a world in which values inevitably conflict and unintended consequences are the rule, every social system and every social initiative will be tinged with irony and tragedy. Capitalism is no exception; it is a mixed bag, both beneficial and costly. For Weber, only by both responsibly safeguarding ourselves from its more dehumanizing features and at the same time measuring up to its demands upon individual initiative can the human spirit survive and in some measure determine its future. We are suspended, with no relief other than our own individual and collective will to act, between these perennial and contradictory demands. Weber harbored both hopes and doubts that human beings were up to the task. Diggins' book brings out this message very well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Max Weber was a modern thinker who defied categorization. Was he a philosopher, an historian, a political theorist or a sociologist? This leads to some confusion as to his message. For instance, contrary to what one of the reviews mentions, Weber didn't view Capitalism as an "iron cage", but it's modern derivative, bureaucracy as that cage. Few people will argue with that comment. Strangely enough too, as Professor Diggins indicates, the questions that Weber struggled with one hundred years ago are still very much with us today. Could that be because the situation of pre-World War I Germany burdened as it was with a dysfunctional political system and weak leaders, yet possessing a strong, vigorous economy and formidable military, is very similar to the that of America today? I found the author's discussion of Weber's problems of reconciling the "ethic of principled convictions" with the "ethic of responsibility" particularly timely. After finishing the book I found myself wanting to know more about Max Weber's insights into the modern condition.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars A readable, unique introduction to Amy's writings........2003-10-01

Some disconnected thoughts about this book (forgive my scatteredness):
It takes a fairly literary modern mind to enjoy Amy's original books. She was a Victorian-era Irishwoman, after all, and-- well, how many Victorian religious writings do we read with ease? She's an amazing woman, but her writing's a little dense for most of us today. This book is still pretty dense-- but it does a great job of relating her writings to modern life (via the author's own reflections) while still presenting a very large amount of Amy's own original thoughts and poems. The result is an easier-to-read Amy Carmichael sourcebook that works both as a cover-to-cover and as a reference read.

Skoglund groups Amy's writing topically by chapter rather than chronologically; this is not exactly a biographical book. If you open it looking for a strong plot, you'll be disappointed. However, if you open it looking for a fresh treatment of Amy's writing that enables you to access her wisdom on an array of subjects (and return to applicable chapters as you need her bracing words of encouragement), you will be delighted.

I've read Eliot's biography and enjoyed it, but this is the one I pull out when I'm looking for something I remembered Amy saying. It's much more full of Amy's own words.

2 out of 5 stars It's not much about Amy Carmichael.......2002-04-24

I got this book to learn about Amy Carmichael, but discovered it's mostly about the author and her close personal friends the Grahams, with snippets of Carmichael thrown in for illustration. I gave up after three chapters and went elsewhere to read about Amy Carmichael.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Truly Excellent.......2001-08-04

Amma was an amazing woman - this book deals with the timeless struggles of single missionary women in a way that is both inspiring and genuine. She speaks with honesty, but focuses constantly on God. A great book that shows all sides of the missionary life - the day to day struggles, and also the spectacular triumphs that come from years of seeking the Lord.
