A quality publication but not for everyone..........2005-11-20

Living in Costa Rica, I purchased Robert L. Dresser's: "Field Guide to the Orchids of Costa Rica and Panama" to help me to identify the orchids in the wild, in my collection and in the collections of others.

While I have in fact been able to use the book to this end, this publication doesn't give up its answers easily and I couldn't recommend it to anyone who gets frustrated easily, is intimidated by technical terminology or to anyone who has the slightest propensity for impatience.

Identifying an orchid with this book requires one to answer one to a great many questions about the plant you are trying to identify. Each answer directs you to another page and set of questions. Sometimes, there are black and white line drawings next to a set of questions to help you make your selection. Eventually, the query ends and the scientific name (though not an image) of the orchid is finally revealed.

An example is:

A. Lip ovate, longer than wide, reflexed, forming a 45 degree angle (this is followed by a series of cryptic abbreviations and measurements for things like size, habitat and colors) .............this apparently identifies this particular orchid as: Epidendrum mantis-religiosae

If this does not sound like your orchid, you are presented with option B.

B. Lip subcircular to kidney-shaped, not markedly longer than wide, not reflexed.....(at which point you are referred to another page, set of questions et. al.)

More often than not, one finds oneself flipping a great many pages unable to actually identify the plant. One proceeds through the query wondering if they actually understood the proceeding questions and if they are in fact on the right track. Many of my searches ended in failure and frustration.

Further, after all of this effort and technical analysis, there isn't the reward of a picture waiting at the end to provide a positive identification. Therefore, one ends up looking at the scientific name wondering if you have in fact identified your orchid. I found it to be rather unrewarding.

While there are in fact color plates, they represent about 1% of the orchids described in the book.

If one were a student or professor or biology or botany I would recommend this book. If one is dedicated amateur who is willing to put forth a lot of time effort towards familiarizing oneself with technical terminology I would also recommend this book.

For the amateur who hopes to identify orchids hailing from Costa Rica and Panama I would suggest looking for a user-friendlier alternative.

Not the Best Choice.......2004-03-02

In preparing for a four-week trip to Costa Rica I bought three travel guides: Moon Handbook, Lonely Planet and Footprint. Of these, I found Footprint to be the least useful and did not bring it along to Costa Rica. Unlike the other two guides, I found its descriptions of places to stay, eat, and visit to be too brief to get much of a sense of what the places were really like.

The best mass-market ecotourist guide.......2004-02-28

Without a doubt, "Footprint" is the best mass-market ecotourist guide available for Costa Rica. Another superior book that will also interest ecotourists, conservationists, amateur naturalists and history buffs, who wish to learn more about this irresistible country is, "Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made."

Very Good for Option Traders.......2007-10-16

If you are new to option trading, this is a very good book. It explains all the different kinds of strategies and when to use them. Excellent book for an option trader to have in their library as a reference book.

This is a heavy duty options book but..........2007-10-08

This is a heavy duty options book but don't let this scare you off. The only prerequisite I would say you need is some basic options understanding/experience and you also need to be interested in learning more about options strategies. When I first got this book I thought "Wow! This reminds me of some of my economics text books from college." But I soon found this book to be well organized and chocked full of great information and far more interesting than any college text book.

I have to warn people that this is not a book to teach you the fundamentals of options trading. You need to have learned the basics already.

I won't go into all the details of what this book covers since many other posts have done that. But I do want to say I really like this book. It has now taken up permanent residence on my desk because I use it so much.

Truly the bible of all bibles!.......2007-09-30

I really enjoyed this book and continue to do so. As others have commented, it's not a cover-to-cover type of book, but I can reference any strategy so easily and get the salient information I need at the flick of a page.

I've also got the author's other book (Options Made Easy) and there's something different about the way he explains the subject of options that I previously found much more difficult and now find remarkably easy. Great book.

Great reference, full of errors.......2007-09-15

This book is an excellent reference book for options traders, novice and experts. It describes in great detail most of the strategies for trading options. I like the structure and the organization of the book. It helps easily locate a stragety based on several criteria, like your trading expertice or your perception of where the underlying stock is going.

I'm dissapointed at the amount of errors in the book. I've only read 2 chapters so far and have found, not only mispelled words, but errors related to the description of the strategy, risk and reward calculations and inverted names (call instead of put, for example).

If not for the errors, I would have given 5 stars to the book.

Technical Alanlysis "Bible".......2007-09-11

A large volume that covers just about anything you want to know about charting. I was most interested in Elliott Wave info and it has a good section about EW. For the options trader, this is the book to study.

Mr.Williams never ceases to amaze me. He has done a phenomenal job of putting this compendium together. He doesn't get bogged down in trivial mathematics. He makes futues accessible to the lay person. I have been trading futures as an investor and broker for the past 11 years. ... With my experience I find it is very important that new investors feel like futures is accessible. Mr.Williams does that in all of his books. The is definitely a great reference guide.

Some good info.......2007-06-11

I couldn't give it 5 stars because I haven't finished the book yet, about 1/2 way through. But if it keeps on track it should be a 5 star book. I've learned quite a few things in the first half of the book. He goes over projecting moves from trend lines, trend angles, validity and exhaustion. Doing the same for rectangles and most of the other patterns. I've skimmed over other parts and he talks about pin bars, which I have to say are one of the more reliable patterns. I would say it's the best book on the subject I've read so far. Although I have encountered a few free sites that are easier to read because they cut out all the fluff and get to the grit of the matter even giving percentage of success etc. However, over all I would rate it as a must read.

This is an extended version of the some parts of the author's book "Technical Analysis Explained", especially the parts on chart patterns. Nothing much added to this subject by thicking those parts of the above book. These parts are better presented (brief and short) in the original source.

Pleasantly surprised..........2005-03-30

I have to say that I am pleased by the information presented in this book, which is organized and presented well. I've read quite a few texts on the subject, by Elder, Tharp, Link, Weinstein, and so on (which are must-reads, by the way), and so this particular text served to complement and enhance the knowledge and skills that I already posessed.

Pring doesn't provide any magic answers here -- and you shouldn't expect any. He simply discusses topics that any aspiring investor/speculator/trader should be intimately familiar with. If you feel you already know everything there is to know about price and volume patterns, trend lines, support/resistance, basic western-style formations, etc..., then this book probably isn't for you. However, if you want to brush up on the subject with a text that presents this information well, then this is not a bad way to go.

If you're a mom of a toddler, preschooler, or elementary age child, get a subscription to the magazine Family Fun, and then get this book as well as "My Great Idea" put out by that magazine. Soooo many wonderful and creative ideas for those of us who are a bit challenged when faced with playing with a youngster!

This book is amazing. It's beautifully designed and it is extremely well organized. I can instantly find the kind of activity that I am looking for (backyard activity, craft to do at the kitchen table, etc.) It's also easy to zero in on age-appropriate ideas, too. I have purchased a lot of activity books over the years, but this is definitely one of the very best.

This book is worth its weight in gold! There are activities, games, ideas, etc. suitable for any occasion. I have a son and a daughter, am a boy scout and a girl scout leader, entertain numerous neighborhood children and bring crafts into my children's classrooms often. A great deal of the activities I do comes from this book alone. I have a full time career also, so I don't always have a lot of time to plan and this book makes it possible. Even if I don't follow an idea exactly, I receive inspiration for other activities/crafts and always find a use for any type of container, paper roll, rocks, pinecones, etc. So if you want a book that not only has great craft ideas but also ideas for groups, games, things to keep your kids entertained while they're waiting for dinner; then this is your book! Have fun and enjoy!

I bought this book, as well as the FamilyFun Craft book. It is a great book with great ideas for a wide range of ages. There are so many good ideas, its hard to know which to do first! I also liked that it is spiral-bound, it makes it easier to look at the projects.

I think I have all of the FamilyFun books now and Boredom Busters is just as great as the others. By using common items found around the house kids can find lots of fun things to make and do. I highly recommend all of the FamilyFun books and magazine as well. Neither you or your kids will be disappointed.

Not only does this book advise one to teach children fundamental skills it tells one HOW to teach. It's not an overnight accompolishment, but it is the next best thing. This book gives clear, precise activities to do with you child on a normal persons schedule. I have found it relieves the guilt associated with not spending enough quality time with your children. It tells you what to do with them. It's so simple. I wonder why I didn't think of it.

Sir John Soane (1753-1837) was one of the most influential, if eccentric, English architects. Most of his designs were so radical for their time that they were never built--just as well, some critics say. But in this ambitiously produced but disappointingly illustrated biography (most of the reproductions are in black-and-white), Gillian Darley champions this son of a bricklayer. Soane was a self-made man who tended to be egotistic and quarrelsome; he displayed sufficient dilettantish genius to discredit him in the eyes of his peers. Despite that, by 1800 he was rich and successful--the personal architect to two prime ministers. He designed the Bank of England, the Dulwich Picture Gallery, and Westminster's Law Courts, as well as Britain's beloved red telephone box. His unprecedented use of neoclassical elements and eclectic styles gave Londoners a chance to marvel at theatrical effects and spatial trickery. Soane's greatest achievement, though, remains his home in Lincoln's Inn Fields, which he bequeathed to the nation upon his death. The Soane Museum is as complex and intriguing as the man himself.
