Customer Reviews:
Slim, Sleek Guide to LA Remains Lacking from a User Viewpoint.......2006-12-27
On a recent visit to LA, I needed an easy-to-use resource just to get my bearings around this expansive and convoluted city. This led to my purchase of the Moon Metro guide, which is as sleek a handbook as one could envision for the visiting tourist. In my subsequent and constant usage of the book, I became increasingly disenchanted with the fragmentation of its presentation, as its editors focus on nine selected tourist areas rather than looking at the city from a navigational standpoint. On the plus side, the guidebook starts with helpful fold-out maps of the nine areas with key attractions identified and located. The nine areas are Santa Monica/Venice, Westwood/UCLA, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood/Melrose, La Brea/Fairfax, Hollywood, Los Feliz/Silverlake, Downtown/Little Tokyo/Chinatown, and further afield, Pasadena.
The rest of the book consists of listings within those areas under the sections - sights, restaurants, nightlife, shops, art and leisure, and hotels. The trendy and well-trodden are included but also some interesting idiosyncratic recommendations like the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust on Wilshire. However, the parts ultimately do not add up to a useful whole, at least for anyone looking for a more cohesive view of the city. If you want to go to any attraction outside of the areas, for example, the Huntington Library, Universal Studios or the Getty Center, you may find mention of them in some generalized map or not at all.
More problematic is how there is little guidance given on using the freeways or major thoroughfares to get from one area to the other. Unlike New York, LA is a city of scattered jewels very often separated by miles and miles of congested roadway. It seems the format of the Moon Metro guide is more conducive to more urbanized spaces whose attractions are within walking and subway commuting distances. Granted the book is a nice portable size, but you will still need to purchase an extensive city map and likely a more comprehensive tourbook of the area to make sure you take the most advantage of your trip to LA.
Awesome for tourists.......2003-05-01
This book really helped while my husband and I went to L.A. for a vacation. The book has highlighted the most interesting areas of the city and made the ciy managable. Each highlighted area has its own fold out map with places to see and things to do. This is a great feature for driving around the city because you don't have a huge map to deal with (so chances are you won't wreck the rental car). Each highlighted area has infomation and a bit of history provided. The book also has pages in the back with detailed descriptions of interesting sites, resturants, hotels, etc. This book helps the tourist explore one area at a time. I highly recommend this book, and the metro moon series for the traveler.
HAVE TO HAVE GREAT MAPS TO GET AROUND THIS CITY.......2003-01-07
L.A. is not a walking city. I loved these maps that helped me navigate the different areas of L.A.. Everything is clear: freeway exits, shopping and clubs districts. Really good guide for hanging out in L.A.
Book Description
Originally published almost a decade ago, LeRoy Gross's authoritative, yet highly accessible book has been the only resource available for conservative investors looking to further their investment goals with options. Now, with a new Introduction by the bestselling author Larry McMillan, The Conservative Investor's Guide to Trading Options has been updated to help market practitioners of the present garner the same rewards reaped by investors of the past.
Using the clear, balanced approach he used with his clients during a long career in the securities industry, Gross explores the various options strategies most frequently employed with individual stocks, examines the risk factors associated with each, and offers a unique perspective on how to use options as a hedging tool. From buy stock/write call to sell stock/buy call, the strategies covered are designed to help investors be better able to increase stock income, reduce stock risk, and seek stock profits. In addition to recommended systems, Gross also points out those that conservative investors should avoid, including naked cal writing, calendar spread, and call option butterfly spread.
With clear, easy-to-understand explanations, here's where you'll find complete details on:
* Reading and understanding option tables.
* Entering option orders.
* Negotiating commission discounts.
* Understanding the language of options trading with a complete glossary.
Filled with practical examples and no-nonsense information, this is essential reading for all those who want to expand their portfolios using conservative option strategies.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book That Covers Things Other Text Don't Mention.......2005-09-23
This is one of the better texts on conservative options strategies. It's the only book I've read that discusses the time and record keeping requirements needed to implement options strategies. This is particularly relevent to those interested in covered call writing.
Some specific recommendations in the text have been made obsolete since the emergence of online ($8 commission) trading. This has greatly increased the profit potential of shorter term positions in covered call writing. In past times, longer holding periods, and rolling of options was needed to overcome the effects of high commission prices. Now, shorter holding periods, even on in the money positions, usually yields higher profitability; contrary to the advice in the book.
This is still a very good text, and well worth reading.
Practical and Conservative Option Trading.......2005-08-05
This book does a good job of identifying the less risky types of option trades an individual investor would want to do. It goes through the various strategies with mathematical examples in a common sense approach. It does not, however, go into the theory of options which I think is necessary to use them effectively and to assure their pricing is reasonable. Larry McMillan on Options is an excellent in-depth book on option theory.
Well-Written, Crisply Edited.......2002-02-13
Before reading this, or any, options book, one should go to [website] and study the subject thoroughly. Once you know the basics, this book can be appreciated. Note: unless one has at least about $5000, someone should quite probably stick to buying calls or puts (which the author, the late Mr. Gross rightfully labels as an 'aggressive' strategy), depending on the market's and a stock's overall outlook.
This book is at its best when used by someone with more than $5000 (and preferably more like $10,000) who can use the time-tested hedging strategies effectively detailed here. Investors on a tighter budget would likely do better with Charles Caes'"Tools of the Bull" or "Tools of the Bear" (the "Bear" book can be easily adapted to using in a bull market also). Options investors should also know some technical analysis, John Murphy's "Charting Made Easy" is a good, cost-effective source.
The layout of this book is clean and makes it easy to read. Gross was a good writer, relaying his ideas clearly to the reader. Any options book will confuse a beginner, learn them first at [website].
This is a great one.......2000-09-07
Most trading books give you well chosen examples of how great their methods work. Rarely the risk and downside. This one shows you the strategies, and the risks if it all goes wrong, as well as the potential profits. It walks you through clear examples and describes over a dozen strategies in a simple manner. Some I surprisingly wasn't familiar with. For example, this is one of the few option texts that mentions and walks though calendar spreads.
If you can't understand this book, you shouldn't be trading options. It is one of only 4 option texts I have kept in my library. The only criticism I have is that this book was written before discount brokers, the commissions weren't updated in the examples. You should not be without this one. Larry McMillan wouldn't be involved if it wasn't first class.
Another good one is Trester's "The Complete Option Player".
Difficult to read........1999-10-02
The idea for this book is a good one, but the execution is not. It is hard to read and follow. Options are confusing enough anyway without confusing writing about them.
Book Description
This book presents a simplified, step-by-step explanation of those stock option strategies that are appropriate for use by an investor primarily interested in the protection of assets, and in increased income. The strategies are explained both by words and with graphs and visual aids. There are also general discussions of market strategies, advice for stockbrokers, lawyers, and general investors interested in stock options.
Customer Reviews:
John's Review.......2007-04-11
Another Gem! Do NOT speculate in options witout reading this first! Buy calls and puts with the LOWEST possible 6 month implied volatility, sell calls and puts with the HIGHEST 6 month implied volatility! Also, pick high volume, therefore highly liguid options with the LOWEST bid/ask spreads tro maximize returns! These are some of the most important things I learned.
Go with a pro.......2006-08-13
Once again Mervyn Hecht makes understanding stock options easy to understand - and easy to use as a tool for making money. Having known Mervyn Hecht professionally for many years, it was no surprise that his third edition was once again a winner - a book one would want to own if you were interested in making money through stock options. Mervyn writes very clearly and to the point. His credentials and experience are outstanding. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in stock options.
It's not speculating.......2006-04-14
I thought Merv Hecht's book How to Make Money with Stock Options was an extremely thoughtful, useful, well written book for the conservative investor who wants to make more money from his or her stock portfolio. Hecht makes clear that options are not just for speculators, that an intelligent conservative strategy can be developed which adds considerably to income. He explains, provides the tools, and the Third Addition includes very useful software to track trades and prepare for tax time.
Traders' Delight.......2006-03-08
The third edition is a traders' delight. As an educator I look for books that can be useful for investors at all levels. The author gives invaluble tips for beginners and loads of advice for seasoned traders.
A new addition this time is tracking software that quite handy
A valuable and easy-to-understand primer.......2001-03-21
Especially in these volatile times in the stock market, Hecht's book is extremely valuable reading for investors. Using plain language, Hecht explains how investors can hedge and pursue less risky strategies with stock options. Those who have some familiarity to investing in the stock market will have no trouble understanding Hecht's presentation of what is often difficult material. His book makes it easy for conservative investors, and those who want to pursue less risky approaches, to make stock options a part of their investment strategy. Thanks to Hecht's book, stock options are now an integral part of my approach to the market, and I'm benefitting handsomely.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2002-01-07
I bought this wonderful book to settle some arguments about names which have erupted in our household after we recently bought a bulldog pup. My son Jonathan wants something "ironic", though his suggestions owe less to irony than inappropriate buffoonery and disrespect (viz Schlong, which isn't in this book) and my daughter Stephanie mysteriously says it has to be something she can work with if she doesn't make it in mainstream films. Still, there are over 2000 naming suggestions and I'm sure we'll find something that suits.
All in all a great book.......2001-03-09
This is an excellent book if you want to name a puppy or kitten. There were some really cool names in here, though some were kind of stange. (Bombshell, Meatloaf, Knickerbocker, you get the idea.) Most of the book was rally cool though. If you need a name for a dog, buy it!
Very Useful list of creative names.......1998-07-22
My wife and I were really struggling trying to give our dog good name that would also be a little creative. A variety of lists on web pages didn't do the trick. Ten minutes with this book and we had our name (Lira). We also came up with several other really good ones I would have never thought of otherwise. If you want to name your dog something other than Max or Maggie (though those are good names), give this book a try.

Book Description
Snowflakes You Can Make is the best snowflake book ever created! Why make boring old, everyday cut-out snowflakes when you can customize them for any special situation? This craft book is perfect for kids of all ages, and will turn anyone into a snowflake pro. There are snowflake patterns for Valentines Day hearts, St. Patrick's Day shamrocks, birds and flowers for spring, the Liberty bell for Independence Day, leaves for fall, spiders and pumpkins for Halloween, pilgrims for Thanksgiving, Christmas trees, bells, and candles for Christmas, plus lots of fun "traditional" snowflakes (snowflakes that look like, well snowflakes!) and more. Perfect for scrapbooking, Snowflakes You Can Make is a crafter's dream, and no classroom should be without a copy. The book contains 64 full size patterns, instructions for folding, cutting and decorating your snowflakes, and a complete index. After spending years showing people how to make paper snowflakes and copying hundreds of patterns for them, Cindy Higham decided to put her patterns in a book for everyone to enjoy. She lives in Utah with her family.

snowflakes for all seasons.......2007-03-08
No the bang for the buck, should be no more than $5.
Small book but ok directions.
I would probably not recomend this book.
Difficult to copy.......2007-01-12
The snowflakes are quite interesting and very different from other snowflake books that I've come across. I did find it difficult however, to copy the snowflakes onto paper where students were able to cut them into the respective snowflakes. Also it made it difficult to utilize the book, because the snowflake shapes designed to be the pattern were on every consecutive page, making it difficult to copy them. I thought the book was going to be somewhat easier to utilize than it is; one should be able to easily transfer the snowflake pattern onto a paper and go from there.
72 Easy-to-Make Paper Snowflakes.......2006-11-23
"You can use the same patterns many times. Photocopy or trace the patterns rather than cutting them out so you can use them many times. You can also photocopy your patterns smaller or larger so you have a variety of snowflake sizes for decorating."
Snowflakes for all seasons is a pattern book to delight the imagination and give children a fun project for the holiday season or any holiday during the year. The snowflakes are not only for Christmas, but also include:
New Year's
Valentine's Day
President's Day
St. Patrick's Day
Spring
Easter
Summer
Fourth of July
Autumn
Halloween
Thanksgiving
Christmas
Winter
Fun Favorites - Teddy Bears, Football, Ferris Wheel, Pinwheel and many more...
To create each snowflake you follow the folding instructions and then use the pattern at the base of any page where you find a snowflake you love.
Snowflakes can be used to decorate presents, packages, scrapbooks, invitations, Christmas trees or even the holiday table any time of the year. Buy a few glue glitter pens to decorate the snowflakes or glue and glitter to match any seasonal theme.

Excellent.......2006-02-21
I have truly enjoyed sharing this book with my adult kids and my grandkids. Everybody gets into the action
Delightful.......2006-01-24
I got this book to use as a means of decorating gifts with atractive but inexpensive ornaments. At first I was unsure if the project would succeed, because the snowflakes seemed so elaborate. I was amazed at the effects that I could produced with very little effort. Each of the designs is based on a simple folding technique that reduces the actual cutting to a minimum. When you see the illustrations it becomes instantly "doable" in your mind. I ran into some difficulty due to the choice of my experiment paper: it was too thick and unyielding when folded as needed. A lighter weight paper cured the problem. Origami paper is beautiful, light enough, and already comes in the required square shape. I also found that, as the author stresses, a very sharp pair of sissors is indespensible to keep the cuts uniform through the entire stack of folds and to achieve the sharp corners and turns required for some of the designs. I found a very sharp pair of surgical scissors did a wonderful job, though the handles were a little hard on the fingers, especially the thumb, when cutting through the thicknesses required.

I dignosed with Depression in my teens and I have read many book out there over the years. THIS IS THE BEST ONE! I realted to it so much and I was able to show other people pages and sections that I tought would help them, help me. Well-organized, eye-opening, and informative!.......2001-11-29
When you think about someone being diagnosed with depression, teenagers might not come first to mind. But teenagers are not exempt from things that can make adults experience an extreme feeling of being overwhelmed and saddened. They are just as vulnerable as adults when it comes to having fights and disagreements with friends or family, and problems at school could intensify their negative emotions. With all the problems teenagers encounter these days, how can you determine whether a teenager's depression is serious enough to warrant treatment?
The book "Understanding Teenage Depression: A Guide to Diagnosis, Treatment, and Management," addresses this information. Readers will become more familiar with depression -- how common it actually is; who is likely to be at risk; how to determine if a teenager is depressed; and what treatments are available. Other important information in the book discusses life events that could lead to teenage depression; various therapies; and other disorders that may afflict teenagers.
My ParenTime recommends the book, "Understanding Teenage Depression" by Maureen Empfield, M.D., and Nicholas Bakalar -- it is well-organized, eye-opening, and informs readers about a problem that is much more common today than parents realize.

The Robert Tonner Story: Dreams & Dolls.......2007-05-14
Great starting point for all levels of collectors.
An absolute must for any Tonner collector!.......2001-06-20
This is a beautifully written and researched book which I found both helpful and interesting. As a doll critic, I often find books about doll artists to be very self indulgent, but this book represented an honest and straight forward look at one of America's most incredible and talented doll manufacturers.
Tonner is an Inspiration!.......2001-05-21
As both a doll artist and a collector, I knew I had to have this book detailing the career of one of America's premiere doll artists in recent history. Robert Tonner has brought American doll artistry to new heights. There are so many wonderful illustrations of all of Tonner's dolls from the beginning of his career through 2000. Reading Tonner's story truly makes an artist believe that anything is possible - especially success - with a vision, talent and a lot of hard work! I am truly inspired having read this book and there are few people I would like to meet as much as I would love to meet Mr. Tonner.
A must for Tonner fans!.......2001-02-28
The author has included everything you could possibly want to know about Tonner and his work. Meticulously researched! The photos are fabulous, as well.
Wonderful book for avid Robert Tonner Doll Collectors.......2000-10-05
This book has many, many photos of his early works to the most recent for the year 2000. His life story gives you an insite for this wonderful doll designer. I highly recommend this for any doll collector!
