Excellent book aside from a misleading title........1999-06-08
If I was interested in building a personal portfolio through DRP investing, this would be the book. However, a person could not perceive this by reading the book title or description from the on-line information. From the title, I believed this was a book which dealt with the logistics of creating and managing a real mutual fund; but not so.
Aside from the misleading title, the book is a wealth of knowledge and I have already put a few of it's ideas to work so that I may save for my kids college fund.
A good primer for the uninitiated but interested investor.......1998-03-22
It is a basic how to or cook book presentation on how to get started ( and encouragement to keep going) on a no frills method of creating your own stock portfolio (without a broker and without commissions). In this age of do it yourself contracting, no frills weddings and build your own funeral caskets... the author presents a good rough guide for the reader to jump into the stock market by direct contact with the corporate head office. If you buy this book and follow its recommendations, once you get going as a shareholder (and self appointed stockbroker) you may never let a day go bye without taking a peek at the stock reports in your newspaper.

Fun and Practical Suitable for All.......2007-03-30
This is another well illustrated book that is well worth the investment.
The instructions are very clear, comprehensive and thorough.
Methodical application by the reader/ crafts person would enable persons of all level of experience to succesfully utilise the text.
The projects in this book are excellent in themselves. However they also provide the reader with tools to develop and express themselves further as their confidence develops. Make sure you have at least a small space at home to do the projects. Suggestions are made for alternative hat blocks (although plastic blocks are available in the US that is perfect for this kind of felt hat making). Experiment!
This book is also good for milliners. As it teaches you how to make a hat from scratch and encourages the crafter to express themselves without the stress of damaging an expensive pre-made felt hood or capeline.

This book has clear, simple instructions for someone looking to learn the basics, and those with more experience will be inspired by the supplementary illustrations showing work by some of the best in the world. There is nothing hokey here- Ms. Hagen has very good taste.

My experience felting was a 1 hour class to get my hands wet...my kids each picked out a hat from the book to make and with more adult help our hats turned out great!

Crack open Susan Vaughan's Half Empty, Half Full, check out the fat margins and the relatively large type size, and you might think one of two things: You'll either say, "Great! This'll be a quick read!" or you'll say to yourself, "What is this, a self-help book? This can't be science."
Either way, optimist or pessimist, you're going to be at least half-right. But--as Vaughan ultimately makes clear--it's the optimist who's going to win out on this one. A Harvard-trained research analyst and frequent contributor to Harper's Bazaar, the inarguably insightful Vaughan ably straddles the fence between self-help and applied psychology. Her thesis boils down to this: Some of us are lucky enough to be trained as optimists in our formative years; for the rest of us worry-warts, fear not--optimism can be learned. Alternating between dry papers, like "Mood congruent memory biases in anxiety and depression," and pop-psych concepts, like Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's early 1990s notion of "flow," Vaughan comforts the afflicted with thoughtful explanations (often drawing from her experience as a therapist) and concrete advice--assuming, of course, you can get past her sometimes cloying references to "Tiggers" and "Eeyores."

Naive.......2006-07-11
I picked up this book with great expectations. I have usually found the other readers' rating system on Amazon to be quite accurate, but this book was a complete disappointment. It felt disjointed, naive and lacking in proper content to warrant a full book on the matter.
Basically, the book can be boiled down to two pieces of advice on which optimism depends. These are downward comparison and controlling our inner environment. I find it hard to believe this book will be of real practical benefit to most readers. You have been warned.
Re-engineering Optimism.......2005-11-27
In Half Empty Half Full, the author is able to show how optimists brains operate when confronted with both positive and negative life situations. Also, citing journalistic examples such as the "mouse island" the author explains that optimism is created by one's perceived value of the future, not necessarily based on one's past experiences, but on one's perceived perception of past experiences. In other words, viewing an experiences as a growing lesson instead of as a tragedy, optimists are able to fine-tune their thinking to have greater confidence in future results based on having experienced and surpassed past limitations. In addition, optimists are able to rationalize more postive perceptions and hold less grudges on past experiences based on the exciting possibilities the future beholds. The author ends with ways that people who aren't naturally optimistic can achieve a newfound optimism (re-focusing mind on future goals, counseling, medication, surrounding yourself around the right environment). Simple and well written text.
Correct understanding of individual differences.......2002-06-29
The key to Dr. Vaughan's or anyone else's understanding of optimism and pessimism is not: 'Which is better for human beings?' -- It is "Do optimistic strategies work well for some people, but pessimistic strategies work better for other people?" And indeed, psychological research indicates that for 40-50% of Americans, optimism is adaptive, but also that optimism is an unsuccessful, maladaptive, and counterproductive strategy for at least 33%. For that group of 33% + the strategy that works far better than "don't worry, be happy" optimism is 'constructive-defensive' pessimism. It is precisely because individuals differ so profoundly that 'positive psychology' is too one-sided and too 'one-size-fits-all' to be fully valid, and that is why we need the corrective found in the books on optimism and pessimism edited by Ed Chang.
So think individually about the previous reviewer suggestion: "contra some other reviers, you cannot come to a correct view simply by reading Dr. Vaughan, then by reading persons of an opposite opinion, because x + (-x) = 0. If the people saying (-x) have correctly analyzed the entire body of literature, while x is based on a very selective reading of a subset of research, "balancing" (-x) with x produces error, not balance." It is the compelling reality of individual differences in personality that matters = X works for you, (-X) works for me, Y works for my friend, Z works for your friend. So constructive pessimism fits some of us, but no single strategy fits all of us !!
Here's to healthy illusions.......2001-09-03
Vaughan is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and researcher who can write for the public. In my coaching practice, I sometimes have to grapple with another person's innate and deeply-grounded pessimism and this book gave me ammunition. I do believe that optimism can be learned and in my efforts to extend my own and other people's optimism in the face of some bad-to-worse onslaughts from life, this book has been of immeasurable help. From the amygdala to dream analysis, Vaughan makes it all almost deceptively simple. I doubt that many can "do it" as well as she can, but learning about changing one's level of optimism -- in fact just knowing that we can -- is a great first step! This book gave me real information I can put into practice.

I especially love the studies that the author chose to include in this book. It is written in such a reader friendly manner so that even when I am triggered or as pesimistic as ever, I am still wanting to continue to read and get more information. It seems well thought out and written with very good knowledge of the subject so to make it far more likely that the author's perspective is true. I dont want to be permanently pesimistic.

The Swiss photographer and filmmaker Rudolph Burckhardt (1914–99) came to New York City in 1935 and experienced the awe that many first-time visitors to the city share. The grandeur, the energy, the vitality, the sheer movement of this American metropolis all drew Burckhardt in, and he made New York his home for the rest of his life. Equally inflecting his career as a photographer and filmmaker, the city and its vibrant cultural life became Burckhardt's muse.
Rudy Burckhardt—New York Moments is a rare collection of his photographs from the 1940s and 1950s. It includes not only street scenes and details of city life—“The tremendous difference in scale between the soaring buildings and the people in the street astonished me,” he wrote—but also the portraits he made of the New York School painters, most notably Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning. As a photographer for ArtNews in the 1950s, Burckhardt had an insider’s view of the burgeoning art scene. But he also recognized the limits of photography—“a photograph, when it gets printed and comes out a picture, becomes like a fact, you know”—and turned his hand to filmmaking. For the rest of his career, photography and film would work together to capture his unique vision.
Including photographs, film stills, and interpretive essays, Rudy Burckhardt accompanies an exhibition of Burckhardt's work at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Basel, Switzerland, and is a fitting tribute to the Swiss photographer who most poignantly captured the energy of mid-century New York.
