Look elsewhere.......2000-04-25

Despite it's unusual layout and artful cover, this book comes across as a personal photo album. The snippets of saguaro lore do not justify the relatively high price, and the photography, while good, is defeated by the vertical format. Perhaps a better investment would be Carl Hodge's "All About Saguaros", which is referenced in the bibliography.

If you are at all interested saguaros, this is a great book to start with. The unusual book size (4 1/2" x 10 1/2") nicely showcase the photos and accentuate the towering size of the cacti.

Find the perfect pairs and you're there...........2007-09-01

As a trader, I found the book gave a good overview on "Pairs Trading", but many of the examples, including the "Trading Diary" on Chapter 22 provided little inspiration to someone looking to make sizeable profits out of pairs trades. For example in Chapter 22, titled the "Trading Diary", after just 30 business days (41 days) the model trade in the book yielded a return of just 1.04%.

Indeed, the basic premise behind the pairs trade, forgetting all the fancy statistics I found is to simply to look at the chart and see if it's tradeable (i.e has it got a range-bound movement!!!). The secret is to find the charts. To accompany this book you really need some good pairs trading software to find these charts. There's limited providers but I'm going to try http://www.pairstrade.com.

Ideal Book for Pairs Trading.......2007-03-16

I strongly suggest to anyone who is interested in the Wall Street strategy known as "Pairs Trading" to read this book. It is extremely well-written and easy to follow. It also provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to build and implement your own pairs trade. Overall, I could not be happier with my purchase and I recommend this book to all. Thank you.

Practical.......2007-01-05

I work in finance and have read a number of books on the topic, I did recently purchase a copy of 'trading pairs'. I havn't finished reading it yet, but I can understand it is a little hard to follow but either way it does target the correct people.

I myself am not a math genius so the simplicity works with me, for hardcore quants this book will leave you fairly unsatisfied, though for everyone else it would be more practical.

If you are new to the concept of trading pairs, like I was, this book really gives you a strong foundation of knowledge to build on. Like any advanced trading strategy, it certainly takes a commitment on your part to really understand the technique thoroughly, but in the end - it's worth it.

An Unheralded Gem.......2006-08-22

I had the occasion last weekend to find a copy of Trading Pairs buried deep in a local bookstore. I was browsing the finance section and have an interest in Hedge Trading. When I saw the title, I immediately picked it up.

What a find! This is an excellent primer for hedge-trading - it lays out the groundwork for novices who may be thinking about Hedge Trading. And then helps the reader use that new knowledge to gain a first-hand, practical, and easy to put into play knowledge of pairs trading arbitrage.

I bought it on the spot, and poured through it that night. To my surprise, the book also went into a fairly deep discussion of more sophisticated trades. Not that a lot of people ask me about hedge trading, or trading pairs, but now, if they do, I'm pointing them out to Whistler's excellent book.

I waited quite some time to buy this book after it was published, and finally purchased it after reading so many positive reviews. I wasn't disappointed.

Norah Gaughan is one of the most original and creative knitwear designers around, and this book is a great showcase for her patterns. The inspiration for the patterns come from the shapes found in nature and accordingly the book is divided into sections focusing on Hexagons, Pentagons, Spirals, Phyllotaxis, Fractals, and Waves.

Each chapter begins with an introduction to the geometrical patterns that follow, and this provides a fascinating insight for anyone interested in the mathematics found in nature. It's refreshing to read a knitting book that is insightful, delving deeper than just a list of patterns.

The patterns in the book are clearly 'inspired by patterns in nature', and the shapes found in the natural world are often merely a jumping off point, as these shapes are then woven in to wearable knitwear designs. All of the patterns are original and inspiring, and *mostly* very wearable. Some of the patterns may not suit everyone, such as those with mid-riff bearing shapes, but don't be afraid to check the internet for wonderful versions that other knitters have made. The best thing about knitting items yourself is the ability to modify patterns to suit yourself.

As other reviewers have said, this book is beautifully presented, and the photography is stunning. Although I haven't knit any of the patterns yet, I often find myself pulling the book off the shelf just to flick through the pages. I'm sure this book will set the standard for knitting books in the future.

I would recommend this book for any intermediate to advanced knitter who is looking for some inspirational ideas. However, as others have said, be sure to check for the online errata before starting on any of the patterns. It's well worth the purchase price.

Stunning and fabulous with two little 'buts'.......2007-09-07

I will start with the 'buts'. The lack of metric measurements is a torture for a continental European. I also gather from the reviews that there are some mistakes in the patterns, which would be bad enough in another book, but in this one it's a real shame. Luckily enough, both problems can be easily solved with the use of a calculator and the Internet.

Having said that: I love this book and a few of the designs are so beautiful they made me speechless. Some of them far to eccentric for me to wear, but the Vortex pullover alone would be worth the money.

The book is beautifully designed and I find the patterns clear. Some may argue the photos are strange - some of them are indeed - but they are one of the things that makes the book different. Each project is preceded with a short explanation on how it refers to nature and the explanations make great reading.

One more thing: the book is for advanced knitters. The patterns are extremely challenging. Even so, less experienced knitters may want to consider buying this book to encourage them to learn more.

Gaughan is the best thing going!.......2007-06-08

I hesitated to buy this book, because of all the complaining about errors. But the fact is, Norah Gaughan is one of the freshest and most intriguing knitwear designers out there. I find myself attracted to her designs everywhere I see them - so it was worth it to me to put up with perhaps some less-than-perfect editing to get this kind of originality and inspiration.

Caution.......2007-10-12

Author Linda Pearson wrote a dissertation favorable to a fringe psychotherapy called "Attachment Therapy"-- a high confrontation, close-physical contact practice that still promotes the old, out-dated notion of catharsis. Attachment Therapy is associated with a brutal, and highly controlling parenting method that demonizes children they give the bogus diagnosis of "Attachment Disordered."

To my knowledge, Pearson has never denounced Attachment Therapy/Parenting. But the American Psychological Association's Division on Child Maltreatment has. They recommend these practices be investigated as "suspected child abuse."

With this background, it would be particularly important for readers to look closely at this "miracle" book's claim to promote a "clinically proven system" of parenting.

This is my first go round with a toddler and hubby & I have been at a loss on how to handle meltdowns. This book has helped. I now feel more in control when she has her meltdowns. We have been able to lower the number of meltdowns and I feel we are connecting better.

The Discipline Miracle offered a unique perspective on basic principles to help gain control of my two-year-olds behavior. It helped me to understand her emotional reactions and how I should best respond to them.

For less than $15, I was totally satisfied and had a renewed sense of self.

This historical book was an excellent source of information, not only about Jose Clemente Orozco, the artist, but about 20th century Mexico and it's history. The illustrations are good and done in black and white. I would recommend this book for students from the 7th grade up, as well as teachers and parents.

In Mexico in the early 1920s, a growing, collective social consciousness gave rise to a revolutionary furor focused on liberating the country's workers from harsh conditions and poverty. In 1921, Mexican artists Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros were all commissioned by the government to create educational paintings on the walls of public buildings. After that initial experience, they devoted themselves almost exclusively to painting these large-scale murals--forming the foundation of a movement that would last 50 years. The muralists' work took up the themes of society and revolution. Often the paintings depicted historical vignettes like the story of Cuernavaca and Morelos crossing the barranca, or Mexico's ancient Indians. They satirized contemporary society, created ideal visions of peaceful families, and built up dark, imposing industrial cityscapes then leveled them by depicting the debauchery and death of the capitalist industrialists.

The paintings themselves reflect diverse artistic influences--surrealism, cubism, and illustration, most notable among them. Their bold colors and strong imagery practically bound out of the 150 color plates in this book. Mexican muralist and scholar Desmond Rochfort lucidly traces the development of the movement to place the work in context and provides a solid history of each of the artists' social and artistic influences. This is an excellent overview of work that should appeal both to fans of the individual artists and Mexican art in general. --Jordana Moskowitz

The Big Three.......2005-03-09

Read the editorial reviews first and if you are still not convinced that this book does a good job covering the Big Three than get individual books on each. The text is outstanding and puts the works of art into a political context of the time period. The author is analytical, insightful and definitely well versed in the subject matter.There is an exhaustive bibliography, extensive endnotes on each chapter and spectacular reproductions on thick quality paper stock. There are historical photographs of public works in progress and a varity of camera angles of individual murals to show the enormity of the works. I have seen many of these murals on location and this book does an excellent job of portraying them as they are. When you see a Rivera fresco on a wall at the National Palace live or in this case from a pulled out camera angle and see the railing leading to the next floor being dwarfed by the images it is truly impressive. Looking at the details within the murals is the ultimate visual experience where you can get lost in the picture and the meaning. The closeups and details of individual segments are superior. This is art for the peoples public viewing brought directly to you from Mexico to hold in your hands and examine at your leisure. There are several good books out there on Mexican Murals but this one for the money is outstanding. The three artists each had a distictive style but each brought a unifying nationalistic approach to the walls of public buildings. Is one artist better than the other? You be the judge, everyone has their own favorite. If you are unfamiliar with the works of the Big Three than check it out, you are in for a treat.

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I OWN!!.......2002-12-28

This is definitely one of the best books out there for anyone interested in Mexican art. Few books can inspire as much as this one, especially for people from Zapotlanejo, Jalisco. It's loaded with many pictures and chronicles the lives of these three muralistas and has in depth coverage of specific murals, i especially enjoyed the coverage on "History of Mexico" mural by Diego Rivera. This book is definitely worth the price and a great addition to any collection. Orale!
