3 out of 5 stars Compact English language guide for Le Puy to Roncevalles.......2003-05-20

Best used as a supplement to the Confraternity of St. James guides. I don't know of another compact guide to the Le Puy to Roncevalles part of the trip to Santiago. It's abbreviations such as L for left, R for right, etc. make it terse and not smooth reading, but it saves on total book size, and weight is important to the Camino walker. This is a 1999 guide, so now getting a little dated.

Once you hit the border of Spain, more recent guides such as Davies and Cole's Walking the Camino de Santiago become available.

On all parts of the Camino, if English is your first language, it is essential to get the corresponding Confraternity of St. James guide books. Do a web search on camino santiago or confraternity, or even backpack45 and they should pop up.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall guide for the pilgrim doing the 'whole' camino.......2002-01-05

This book became well worn from being used several times a day on our 68 day Camino. It is a nice pocket-size with lots of background info as well as route descriptions.
If you are only doing the Spanish portion (Camino Frances route) you might feel that this book is not necessary but if you are starting in Le Puy it will be helpful. Since any book on the Camino will be outdated as soon as it is printed, I would suggest that you also carry the supplemental guides from the Confraternity of St James, since they are updated every year.

2 out of 5 stars Do not get this if you walk only the last 300 km or less.......2001-09-03

This book may be usefull if you walk all the way from St. Jean or Le Puy, but I doubt that. I walked from Astorga to Santiago 7/2001 and had this book with me, but found it quite useless and outdated and I was not the only one with this opinion in the camino (my book was printed in 2000). Raju's book is consists mostly of route descriptions, but today the yellow arrows are very good in Castille and Galicia and it is quite difficult to get lost and fountains are also easy to find.
I needed the info in this book only once during my trip and even then only to choose between two alternative routes.
The book does not have info on refugios which would be really important and also very little about history of the towns in the route which would be interesting.
If you have this book I recommend reading it before you go or just copying the pages you think you need. The only book I can warmly recommend taking with you is the annually published quide of Confraternity of St James. It is light and up to date.
    Ultreia!

4 out of 5 stars Walking the camino.......2001-07-12

This book is the essential guide to walking the camino to Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain. It is a factual guide and leads you from village to village. Very useful in that it charts shops, refugios and fountains for filling the water bottle. If you want to walk the camino from St Jean to Santiago de Compostela this is the book for you. As a walker you will be carrying everything you need in a rucksack, so you may need to copy the pages and throw them away as you walk, to lighten your load.

      Book Description

As this volume opens, partisan politics in the United States are building to a crescendo with the approach of the presidential election. Working for a Republican victory, Jefferson consults frequently with Madison, Monroe, and others to achieve favorable results in state elections. He corresponds with controversial journalist James T. Callender. Sifting information from published rumors and private letters, he follows events in Europe, including Bonaparte's unexpected rise to power in France, and sees the value of his tobacco crop plummet as U.S. legislation cuts off the French market. Jefferson grows concerned at Federalist promotion of English common law in American jurisprudence and at proceedings in the Senate against William Duane, printer of the Philadelphia Aurora. Drawing heavily on British legislative practice, however, as well as advice from Virginia, he begins in earnest to compile a manual of parliamentary procedures for the Senate.

As president of the American Philosophical Society, Jefferson calls for reform of the United States census. He publishes an appendix to Notes on the State of Virginia defending his account of the Mingo Indian Logan's legendary 1774 speech. And Jefferson consults Joseph Priestley and Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours about the curriculum for a projected new university in Virginia. While continuing the reconstruction of Monticello, he mourns the death of the infant girl of his younger daughter, Mary Jefferson Eppes.

          Book Description

A love story, a mystery, and a memory guide, Past Forgetting shows a writer's determination to re-create her life.Jill Robinson, novelist and author of Bed/Time/Story, wakes from a coma to discover she's lost her memory and just about any sense of who she was. And is.

She likes the look of the man standing next to her bed, but doesn't recognize that he's her husband, Stuart. What matters is that she feels safe around him. As she searches the house for her children, she is reminded that her son and daughter are both grown with families of their own--how well did she ever know them? Can You make up for a past you don't really remember?

It is Stuart who begins to fill in the details for Jill, including the fact that she's a well-known writer, although when she meets with her doctors, they say she may never write again.

Against all odds, Jill Robinson retrieved her unique writing voice, and in this engaging memoir shows how she does it. She takes us with her on her exploration of'tlie connections between memory and creativity, celebrity and anonymity, and loss and discovery. From her first tentative steps outside her house on Wimpole Street to London's sleek West End. From a trip to Oxford to discuss memory with a professor to her amazing voyage to Los Angeles on an assignment for Vanity fair which takes her back to the sixties world of Hockney, Polanski, and Hopper, Jill forges new paths to memory.

In Past Forgetting, Jill Robinson rediscovers friendships she doesn't know she had: Robert Redford tells her stories about her childhood; at John Lahr's London literary teas, she's reintroduced to the writer's world, and Cary Grant offers her memories of her father, Dore Schary. And being with Barbra Streisand reminds her of a time she doesn't quite remember: when her father was running MGM.

In her urgent voyage to redefine herself, Jill asks all the questions you've ever asked on the nature of memory. Is recollection shadowed by emotion? Is memory an act of reinvention? Do people reinvent rather than recollect? In Past Forgetting you'll find the answers and you'll meet a writer you won't want to forget.

3 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like it..........2000-09-06

I DID like the idea. How terrifying to lose your memory and how amazing to go through the process of getting it back! But it was very bizarre, and rather irritating, that what Ms. Robinson remembered best were the bygone days in Hollywood of her famous family and friends. The intriguing topics of not remembering what her relationships with her kids were like, forgetting that family members had passed away, etc. were just barely touched upon. I don't like to read Hollywood tales, and those are what seem most important in this memoir. I waffled over 2 stars or 3 stars for my rating... I decided on 3 only because I liked and admired her loyal husband so much.

          4 out of 5 stars "I couldn't taste the name".......2000-01-14

I was hooked on this book from the opening sentence. As a writer, the thought of losing my memory is terrifying; this chronicle of regaining one's most personal and valuable possession moved me beyond the realm of mere words. And that one apparently simple line -- "I couldn't taste the name" (of a soup) -- fills me with the worst kind of professional envy.

Sure, there's some "self-indulgent stuff" in the book; but who can blame a writer for flexing her skills or a person who has come back from such a staggering blow for indulging herself? On the whole, however, this is a remarkably restrained piece of work. Jill Robinson deserves nothing but praise for "Past Forgetting."

5 out of 5 stars A dazzling kalediscope of memory lost and found........1999-11-26

Jill Robinson is blessed with an elegant, original prose style, and a life story that gives it wing in Past Forgetting. This is an amazingly original autobiography which takes the reader into the heart and brain of its subject as she struggles to recover memory, and in the process reclaims a fascinating life which began in Hollywood as daughter of MGM head Dore Schary, where she deveoped her writer's eye for the telling detail. What for others would have been a catastrophic event: the siezure which caused a brain storm and severe memory loss, is in her hands a deeply intelligent and entertaining tale of life and memory recaptured. It is also a rare love story of a husband's devotion, and of a woman's courage.

          5 out of 5 stars Geez!.......1999-11-24

I am still not finished because I don't want this book to end. Whoever said that whatever happened to your brain would affect your writing was "bent". Having had a tumor removed and having had my brain damaged to save my life, I am relating like crazy (bad use of words....another problem). Read,"Bed/Time/Story" years ago. This surpasses even the brilliance of that. My step-brother, Robbie Schary Wollin, knew and was distantly related to you, so I was struck by the face which stared out at me from the cover and how much it resembled his family. I now am going to get something wonderful and sweet from the cupboard, a piece of paper towel to keep the sugar from schmutzing up my outfit, and am going to finish your book, damn it. One thing: with what memory I have I will hopefully be able to read this wonder of language again....because I will forget the feelings it arose in me and once again introduced me to a woman of uncommon valor.

I purchase this wonderful booklet a few years ago and on a recent visit to my home, my 12 year old nephew saw my copy and wanted one. He really wants to make these yummy treats for his 2 dogs. I have been unable to find another copy, but hopefully Jackie will see my review and contact me! I have made several of the doggie treats and my 2 small dogs love them, both while I am making them, as they are baking, and waiting patiently as they cool so they can have one! These recipes are easy, and contain healthy wholesome ingredients. This is my favorite pet treat cookbook, just hope I can get another copy!

Designs created by Browning use novelty bindings, scalloped edges and more to provide lovely quilt borders. Patterns, color photos, and suggestions for alternate uses of the bindings make for a 'must' for any quilter who wants to add polishing touches.

If you are looking for a good reference for techniques and also for some great patterns for borders, this is the book for you. Also, if you want to make that great Windmill Log Cabin as shown on the opening of Simply Quilts, Bonnie has included all of the instructions to make this quilt. I liked the border patterns especially ... some of them are borders from prizewinning quilters like Linda Roy's Best of Show quilt, Spice of Life, and Gladi Porsche's beautiful appliqued border in Keeping Autumn with Me. Bonnie has designed some new borders too. I'm glad to have it in my library.

The value in this book is in Chapter 2.

Chapter 1 covers the general steps to creating a quilt. Anyone who has made a quilt will find they already know this information, but beginners might really appreciate it. (There are other books for this information, though.) Chapter 2 is where she gets into borders and it really is a "border primer". She covers every possibility from no border to stretching the design into the border, single & multiple bands, squares, triangles, and appliqued borders. In Chapter 3, she covers scalloped edging, prairie points, piping, and dogtooth edges.

Chapter 4 is the Gallery and Patterns section. As there are only 3 or 4 *pieced* border designs and since this is the lion's share of the book, I was a little disappointed. All the rest (of 17 total patterns) are for applique. Beautiful and varied, but applique is not my thing...yet.

If you're looking for some really nice applique border designs, this is definitely the book for you. Just xerox and go!

                          Book Description

A unique combination of a month-by-month garden journal, an almanac, and a garden hints book in one.

In Organic Gardening magazine, the popular "Gardener to Gardener" column is a forum for gardeners across the country to reveal their most ingenious ideas to one another. Now, this unique format is combined with the best of a practical record-keeping tool and a garden almanac, offering readers a gardening book unlike any other on the market.

The focus of Gardener to Gardener is on natural, organic pest control-the most common problems among gardeners. Each month, readers are given specific projects and activities, which are complimented by garden-tested advice from both the readers and writers of Organic Gardening magazine. Journal pages allow gardeners to chart the progress of their developing gardens. Every region of the country is addressed, and readers are given fully-illustrated, what-to-do-in-the-garden instructions for their particular region. Timed for December, when gardeners begin planning for the growing season, Gardener to Gardener will help and inspire them to create their own organic masterpieces.

                            Book Description

Some 2,300,000 people in the U.S. have one of forty types of epilepsy. The most well-known of these is epilepsy with grand mal seizures. However, forms of epilepsy that involve only part of the brain and do not involve convulsions are more common. Symptoms for these partial seizure disorders can vary widely: some patients have no physical signs at all, experiencing only mental or sensory changes during a seizure, while others may experience numbing, shaking, or automatic movements of one or more body parts. Although partial seizures usually do not look dramatic to other people, they can have serious consequences for patients who have them. If left untreated, seizure activity may become more severe, occurring increasingly often and spreading to affect other brain regions. There is a possibility of permanent brain damage in some cases. The physical and emotional effects of partial seizures--dissociation, loss of coordination, memory loss, fatigue, mood swings, and physical pain, among others--can also make them very difficult to live with. The good news is that partial seizures are treatable. With intervention, patients can wrest back control of their lives. Partial Seizure Disorders helps patients and families: Author Mitzi Waltz, an advocate for children's neurological issues, has included the stories of dozens of patients and parents.

4 out of 5 stars Very thorough, easy reading!.......2005-10-13

This book is informative on all aspects of partial seizure disorders, from discovery to diagnosis and treatment. I loved how easy it was to read. I read this book in less than 2 days! My only disappointment is that the book didn't touch a little more on the psychological impact of the disorders (and subsequent consequences).

5 out of 5 stars Fills a needed gap in epilepsy literature.......2003-09-21

When searching through libraries for information on epilepsy, I've always been able to find a lot of information on generalized seizures and little to no information on partial seizures. There is usually only a paragraph or two on them in books that primarily address other kinds of epilepsy. After repeatedly coming across the same information -- information I already knew -- I was getting tired of looking. Then I found this book, which is the exact opposite -- it is almost entirely about partial seizures, with a few paragraphs at the beginning about generalized seizures.

There need to be more books like this. It lives up to the same high standards as the computer guides by the same publisher. It presents information in a clear, easy-to-read way without dumbing it down or omitting crucial details.

The different kinds of seizures are described, and background information is provided about the functions of different parts of the brain. Causes of seizures, from seizure disorders to environmental factors, are discussed, along with speculative theories about 'kindling'. The connections with migraines are explored. There is a large section on medications, with detailed and important information about each one. I learned in that section that a newer version of a medication I currently take is under development, with fewer side-effects. While I am currently free of the more annoying side-effects, that is information I might want in the future. There is also a section on alternative treatments.

The book does not stop at this technical information, though. It also contains a lot of practical advice. There is an entire section on how to communicate with your doctor about getting a diagnosis and treatment, with a number of useful tips. There are quotes throughout the book from people with epilepsy, detailing both the experience of having seizures and the social experience of dealing with stigma and discrimination. It talks about people who go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for a long time, and several dimensions of the emotional effects of having seizures. These were some of the most valuable parts of the book for me. Besides descriptions of the social and emotional aspects of having epilepsy, strategies and solutions are provided. There are sections on both work and school, as well as alternate sources of income for people unable to work. The author makes an effort to include information relevant to as many countries as possible.

I have never seen this much information on partial seizures in one place before. I would like to see books like this for all kinds of seizures, partial and generalized, rare and common. Too often the unusual (or not-talked-about) kinds of seizures fall by the wayside in discussions of the more stereotypical tonic-clonic and absence seizures. This book not only fills a needed gap in epilepsy literature, but it does so in a readable and accessible style, so you don't need to be a neurologist to decipher it. It is definitely a useful resource for me as a person with this kind of seizures, and it looks like it would be equally useful to parents and family. This will stay on my shelf as a valuable reference.

5 out of 5 stars For Anyone Affected By Partial Seizures.......2001-09-13

Anyone whose life is significantly impacted by partial seizures, whether directly or indirectly, should own this book. This is the only book that I have come across that specifically addresses partial seizures (simple and complex), and as such it is tremendously valuable to parents, friends, family members, and people who have Epilpesy themselves. It seems that books on Epilepsy are either very cheap (and broad and shallow in scope) or extremely expensive (and bordering on encyclopedic), but this book falls nicely in the middle. It weighs in at a reasonable price and provides a wealth of information that an interested person might otherwise only find by sifting through a large volume.

I have read this book twice and I was still learning as I read it the second time. It includes lots of personal accounts, both by people who have seizures and caregivers (mostly parents of children with seizures). I think that these varied accounts provide a great deal of insight, particularly for those who don't themselves have seizures but must face its issues. The book includes lots of resources in terms of books, addresses, websites, and organizations, and also includes a good section on insurance issues. If your life is affected by partial seizures, you should have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of helpful information.......2001-08-29

The information in this book surpassed any expectation I had. What a helpful resource this book is. It explains what seizures are, clearly, for the nonscientist, and then goes on to explain how a diagnosis is arived at. The book continues with advice on living with a partial seizure disorder, dealing with school, jobs, etc., and what kinds of treatments (medical and less traditional) there are available. There is not a wasted page in this book. All of the information is valuable and helpful. If you need a book to help you understand partial seizure disorders, this book will satisfy most every need.

4 out of 5 stars The First and Still the Best Biography of Big Jim.......2006-08-27

This work is often cited as the definitive biography of Big Jim Larkin, the Irish labor leader. With good reason. Not only did the author research the subject thoroughly, he also interviewed many of the story's protagonists at length. As Big Jim was no longer living, the author was able to interview his son.

One of the narrative's strengths is that it examines Jim as he developed: a poor laborer who progressed from apprentice to journeyman to master labor agitator. The tone is neither flaterring nor scathing but remains objective throughout.

More recent authors on Big Jim Larkin have the benefit of viewing more FBI and KGB files on the man. But none has improved on the insights of this work. Pick up a copy if you can.
