Compact English language guide for Le Puy to Roncevalles.......2003-05-20
Once you hit the border of Spain, more recent guides such as Davies and Cole's Walking the Camino de Santiago become available.
On all parts of the Camino, if English is your first language, it is essential to get the corresponding Confraternity of St. James guide books. Do a web search on camino santiago or confraternity, or even backpack45 and they should pop up.

The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Volume 31: 1 February 1799 to 31 May 1800 (Papers of Thomas Jefferson)
Thomas Jefferson Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0691118957 |
Book Description
As this volume opens, partisan politics in the United States are building to a crescendo with the approach of the presidential election. Working for a Republican victory, Jefferson consults frequently with Madison, Monroe, and others to achieve favorable results in state elections. He corresponds with controversial journalist James T. Callender. Sifting information from published rumors and private letters, he follows events in Europe, including Bonaparte's unexpected rise to power in France, and sees the value of his tobacco crop plummet as U.S. legislation cuts off the French market. Jefferson grows concerned at Federalist promotion of English common law in American jurisprudence and at proceedings in the Senate against William Duane, printer of the Philadelphia Aurora. Drawing heavily on British legislative practice, however, as well as advice from Virginia, he begins in earnest to compile a manual of parliamentary procedures for the Senate.
As president of the American Philosophical Society, Jefferson calls for reform of the United States census. He publishes an appendix to Notes on the State of Virginia defending his account of the Mingo Indian Logan's legendary 1774 speech. And Jefferson consults Joseph Priestley and Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours about the curriculum for a projected new university in Virginia. While continuing the reconstruction of Monticello, he mourns the death of the infant girl of his younger daughter, Mary Jefferson Eppes.

Past Forgetting: My Memory Lost and Found
Jill Robinson Manufacturer: Harper Paperbacks ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0060932341 Release Date: 2000-11-14 |
Book Description
A love story, a mystery, and a memory guide, Past Forgetting shows a writer's determination to re-create her life.Jill Robinson, novelist and author of Bed/Time/Story, wakes from a coma to discover she's lost her memory and just about any sense of who she was. And is.
She likes the look of the man standing next to her bed, but doesn't recognize that he's her husband, Stuart. What matters is that she feels safe around him. As she searches the house for her children, she is reminded that her son and daughter are both grown with families of their own--how well did she ever know them? Can You make up for a past you don't really remember?
It is Stuart who begins to fill in the details for Jill, including the fact that she's a well-known writer, although when she meets with her doctors, they say she may never write again.
Against all odds, Jill Robinson retrieved her unique writing voice, and in this engaging memoir shows how she does it. She takes us with her on her exploration of'tlie connections between memory and creativity, celebrity and anonymity, and loss and discovery. From her first tentative steps outside her house on Wimpole Street to London's sleek West End. From a trip to Oxford to discuss memory with a professor to her amazing voyage to Los Angeles on an assignment for Vanity fair which takes her back to the sixties world of Hockney, Polanski, and Hopper, Jill forges new paths to memory.
In Past Forgetting, Jill Robinson rediscovers friendships she doesn't know she had: Robert Redford tells her stories about her childhood; at John Lahr's London literary teas, she's reintroduced to the writer's world, and Cary Grant offers her memories of her father, Dore Schary. And being with Barbra Streisand reminds her of a time she doesn't quite remember: when her father was running MGM.
In her urgent voyage to redefine herself, Jill asks all the questions you've ever asked on the nature of memory. Is recollection shadowed by emotion? Is memory an act of reinvention? Do people reinvent rather than recollect? In Past Forgetting you'll find the answers and you'll meet a writer you won't want to forget.

"I couldn't taste the name".......2000-01-14
Sure, there's some "self-indulgent stuff" in the book; but who can blame a writer for flexing her skills or a person who has come back from such a staggering blow for indulging herself? On the whole, however, this is a remarkably restrained piece of work. Jill Robinson deserves nothing but praise for "Past Forgetting."

Great for Applique border designs.......2000-12-31
Chapter 1 covers the general steps to creating a quilt. Anyone who has made a quilt will find they already know this information, but beginners might really appreciate it. (There are other books for this information, though.) Chapter 2 is where she gets into borders and it really is a "border primer". She covers every possibility from no border to stretching the design into the border, single & multiple bands, squares, triangles, and appliqued borders. In Chapter 3, she covers scalloped edging, prairie points, piping, and dogtooth edges.
Chapter 4 is the Gallery and Patterns section. As there are only 3 or 4 *pieced* border designs and since this is the lion's share of the book, I was a little disappointed. All the rest (of 17 total patterns) are for applique. Beautiful and varied, but applique is not my thing...yet.
If you're looking for some really nice applique border designs, this is definitely the book for you. Just xerox and go!

Partial Seizure Disorders: Help for Patients and Families

Book Description
Some 2,300,000 people in the U.S. have one of forty types of epilepsy. The most well-known of these is epilepsy with grand mal seizures. However, forms of epilepsy that involve only part of the brain and do not involve convulsions are more common. Symptoms for these partial seizure disorders can vary widely: some patients have no physical signs at all, experiencing only mental or sensory changes during a seizure, while others may experience numbing, shaking, or automatic movements of one or more body parts. Although partial seizures usually do not look dramatic to other people, they can have serious consequences for patients who have them. If left untreated, seizure activity may become more severe, occurring increasingly often and spreading to affect other brain regions. There is a possibility of permanent brain damage in some cases. The physical and emotional effects of partial seizures--dissociation, loss of coordination, memory loss, fatigue, mood swings, and physical pain, among others--can also make them very difficult to live with. The good news is that partial seizures are treatable. With intervention, patients can wrest back control of their lives. Partial Seizure Disorders helps patients and families:Customer Reviews:
Very thorough, easy reading!.......2005-10-13
A quick read...........2005-02-01
Fills a needed gap in epilepsy literature.......2003-09-21
There need to be more books like this. It lives up to the same high standards as the computer guides by the same publisher. It presents information in a clear, easy-to-read way without dumbing it down or omitting crucial details.
The different kinds of seizures are described, and background information is provided about the functions of different parts of the brain. Causes of seizures, from seizure disorders to environmental factors, are discussed, along with speculative theories about 'kindling'. The connections with migraines are explored. There is a large section on medications, with detailed and important information about each one. I learned in that section that a newer version of a medication I currently take is under development, with fewer side-effects. While I am currently free of the more annoying side-effects, that is information I might want in the future. There is also a section on alternative treatments.
The book does not stop at this technical information, though. It also contains a lot of practical advice. There is an entire section on how to communicate with your doctor about getting a diagnosis and treatment, with a number of useful tips. There are quotes throughout the book from people with epilepsy, detailing both the experience of having seizures and the social experience of dealing with stigma and discrimination. It talks about people who go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for a long time, and several dimensions of the emotional effects of having seizures. These were some of the most valuable parts of the book for me. Besides descriptions of the social and emotional aspects of having epilepsy, strategies and solutions are provided. There are sections on both work and school, as well as alternate sources of income for people unable to work. The author makes an effort to include information relevant to as many countries as possible.
I have never seen this much information on partial seizures in one place before. I would like to see books like this for all kinds of seizures, partial and generalized, rare and common. Too often the unusual (or not-talked-about) kinds of seizures fall by the wayside in discussions of the more stereotypical tonic-clonic and absence seizures. This book not only fills a needed gap in epilepsy literature, but it does so in a readable and accessible style, so you don't need to be a neurologist to decipher it. It is definitely a useful resource for me as a person with this kind of seizures, and it looks like it would be equally useful to parents and family. This will stay on my shelf as a valuable reference.
For Anyone Affected By Partial Seizures.......2001-09-13
I have read this book twice and I was still learning as I read it the second time. It includes lots of personal accounts, both by people who have seizures and caregivers (mostly parents of children with seizures). I think that these varied accounts provide a great deal of insight, particularly for those who don't themselves have seizures but must face its issues. The book includes lots of resources in terms of books, addresses, websites, and organizations, and also includes a good section on insurance issues. If your life is affected by partial seizures, you should have this book.
Lots of helpful information.......2001-08-29
