The premise is a good one. Your back yard is full of natural beauty, so you needn't fly off to Africa to find it. The Barbours explore their own Northeast backyard, with wonderful results. The writing dotes lovingly and knowledgeably on conifers, valley hardwoods and mushrooms, while the pictures are spectacular. No matter where you live, it's worth heading out to the Northeastern states, book in hand, to see the honeysuckle berry, the tuliptree and bloodroot, or else just sit with your feet up and see them through Anita's and Spider's eyes.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful, insightful book.......2007-09-26

I think that negative comments I've read here are based on a misunderstanding of the book's intent. It is not a field guide. It is a book to help one's appreciation and understanding of the flora of the northeast. Spider Barbour's understanding of the natural world we live in is amazing. As a professional naturalist with years of experience, I can only hope to one day see the world in the same way he does. Fortunately, he is able to express his knowledge in an enjoyable and friendly manner. The photographs are incredible from an artistic point of view, but they will not help with field identification.

2 out of 5 stars Good words, bad pictures.......2000-11-07

This book takes you season by season and beautifully describes the plants that you will see in the woods, meadows, and by the stream or pond. It made me want to get out and walk on my own land upstate and see these plants for myself. The down side to this book is despite the fact that New England and New York are beautiful in every season the photos in this book don't represent them well. The photos are in such soft focus (some out of focus)that I wouldn't recognise them in real life using the pictures. Sometimes an attempt to make a photo look artistic results in pictures that don't communicate.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2006-03-06

I recently took my kids to Disney World and Universal Studios in Florida. It was a first trip for all of us so I had no idea what to expect. This book proved to be crucial in planning every aspect of our vacation. It shows you how to get the best deals on everything from hotels and plane tickets as well as the best times of the year, the best days and even the best time of day to visit every attraction. I must have refered to the book at least 20 times a day for the best places to eat, overviews of each ride and the maps.
Overall, we saved a lot of money, but the most important thing is that we saved so much time. In knowing where to go, what to do first and which rides were best for my children, we spent very little time waiting in lines or for a table at a restaurant. In fact, during most of our time at the theme parks, we found ourselves going in the opposite direction as everyone else.
I am so grateful to Corey and Janice for all their hard work and thorough research. It was like having my own private tour guide for my vacation!

Book Description

"I have just seen McCall's and so has Jack and we are so happy... They are the only pictures I've ever seen of me where I don't look like something out of a horror movie. If I'd realized what a wonderful photographer you were... I never would have been the jittery subject I was. Poor Orlando! Remember I wouldn't even eat a Good Humor. I was so lens-shy."--Jacqueline Kennedy, in a letter to Orlando Suero

In January 1954, the handsome junior senator from Massachusetts and his glamorous wife moved into a three-story townhouse at 3321 Dent Place in Georgetown. Although they would live here for only five months, the house was their first home after their wedding-- the society event of the decade--and a place from which they could begin to prepare for the next step in their lives, one that would take John and Jacqueline Kennedy to the White House. In May of that year, Orlando Suero, a photographer with the Three Lions Picture Agency on his first major assignment, spent five days with the Kennedys. He enjoyed their full cooperation and the intimate access that would later, as Jacqueline became more anxious about her family's privacy, be denied to all but a few.

In more than twenty photo sessions, Suero documented a typical week in the young couple's life: Jack at his Senate office, catching up on work at home, and painting in the back garden; Jackie attending classes at Georgetown, gardening, and preparing for an evening of dinner and dancing; and the couple reading the morning papers around the breakfast table, looking through their wedding photos, hosting both casual and formal dinner parties, and tossing the football around with neighbors Bobby and Ethel Kennedy.

Suero's photographs capture the idyllic quality of the young couple's lives during their months in Georgetown. Not yet hounded by the media, John and Jacqueline in these images seem happier and more at ease than they would ever be again. Surprisingly, no magazine ever published Suero's complete photo essay. McCall's ran a few of his photographs that fall, but most of them have not been seen until now. In 1989, Three Lions Picture Agency owner Max Lowenherz donated the photographs to the Johns Hopkins University's Peabody Institute. For Camelot at Dawn, the Peabody Institute's Anne Garside has selected nearly one hundred of the most evocative and affecting pictures Suero took during his week in Georgetown. This remarkable document of John and Jacqueline Kennedy's first year of marriage recalls the romance and the promise embodied by their life together in America's last age of innocence.

5 out of 5 stars Camelot at Dawn: Jacqueline and John Kennedy in Georgetown, May 1954.......2007-03-09

It is hard to believe that there was a time when you could have passed Jack or Jackie on the street and not known them. This book has made them into "real people". I really enjoyed reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A sweet and special trip back in time.......2007-01-31

To borrow from the movie HELP!, "Here's how they was before they was." Unguarded and completely charming photos of newlyweds, before international fame overtook them and they perfected their public faces. As one who has read extensively about the Kennedys, I am always happy to find books that can still show me something I haven't seen before. This book does that, and I enjoyed it and recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A typical week in the young couple's life .......2005-06-07

Camelot At Dawn: Jacqueline & John Kennedy In Georgetown, May 1954 is the collaborative work of photographer Orlando Suero and author Anne Garside. As his first major photography assignment, Suero spent five days with the Kennedys in May of 1954. He enjoyed their full cooperation and the intimate access that produced more than twenty photo sessions as Suero documented a typical week in the young couple's life including Jack at his Senate office, Jackie attending classes at Georgetown, and the couple playing touch football in the park. Camelot At Dawn is a "must" for all of those whose lives and imaginations where touched by one of America's most idealized couples before tragedy would shattered both their personal lives and those all too brief days of an American "Camelot" for the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars Photographs that today are stunning in their meaning.......2003-09-03

As someone who grew up in the Kennedy era, these images had a profound effect on me. They are images that shortly after they were made, could never have been made again. Can you imagine seeing Jack and Jackie Kennedy strolling alone down the streets of Georgetown (in DC), her wearing shorts and him wearing sneakers and a plain t-shirt? Or playing football in a public park with absolutely NO gawkers hanging around? The great impact of these pictures comes from their innocence and irony, because of what came after and what we now know. If you remember the Kennedy era, you might stare at some of the images in this book for many minutes in wonder, about the people in the picture, about yourself, and about how we were then and are now. I gave this book to my brother-in-law--a recognized expert on the Kennedy assination--and he said he almost cried. It's that good.

5 out of 5 stars in the crowd of Kennedy books published, this is a STANDOUT!.......2001-11-26

Can the Kennedys ever have a bad photograph taken of them? It is appears not, as this book illustrates. CAMELOT AT DAWN is kind of an artsy photojournalism feast for the eyes, and although at first glance the text will seem to have general information that we all know about, it too is a treat.

Orlando Suero had his first big assignment taking pictures of Jacqueline Kennedy for McCall's magazine for an article. It would turn out that most of his shots would not be used because the press felt that the Kennedys had been overexposed in the media due to their wedding--so it is only now in this book that most of the pictures taken for that assignment have been published.
Suero says that JFK manages to sneek himself into most pictures, and so the final result became as much as about him as Jackie...but we also see the Bobby Kennedys as well as the former President Trumans.

Some of these pictures have been published in other books, so not all of them are seen here for the first time, but seeing them within the context that they were shot makes the photos that have been seen before all the more interesting. However, it is only a few--most of these are just being seen for the first time.

As for the text, some of it is "well duh" text because it is known by everybody:"Jackie was a silver-and-Sevres kind of girl, whereas Jack was a milkshake-and-hamburger kind of guy." (I am not cutting on Anne Garside's writing--because the book is actually quite good, I am just trying to point out that some of the information that she writes everyone knows in their sleep...as that is how famous Jack and Jackie have become.) Now don't take this sentence of Garside's alone--you have to read the whole book before you dare judge her writing, and in my estimation she has succeded in the overall scheme in making two well known sujects seem like new again. How does she do this?
For example, there is information about the renting of Dent Place--where these photographs are taken as well the Kennedys first home--which is interesting because we get to see excerpts from Jackie's letters to the Childs (the people who the Kennedys were renting the house from.)
Also information about Evelyn Lincoln's calender is given as to what the Kennedy's were doing the week the photos were taken, as well as little details spread out throughout the text that make the book an interesting read.

I believe that this is a standout book published on the Kennedys. It is informative and orginal in text, and the pictures easily give Lowe, Avedon, and Shaw a run for their money. You can and will enjoy this book if you give it a chance--don't get stuck on the information about the JFKs that we all know or the pictures that we have all seen--read the entire book and appreciate the entire book!

2 out of 5 stars Human tragedy: A lawyer with nobody to sue.......2006-03-11

When I first starting reading this book my frame of reference was Christopher Reeve's book "Still Me", about the struggles of facing quadriplegia after a tragic accident. I found Mr. Reeve's book inspiring in many ways and disheartening in other ways. Mr. Reeve was wealthy enough, and had multiple insurance and disability policies to fund a private clinic in his own home, with a full time staff of nurses, aides and therapists. In Mr. Galli's book, I was disheartened more than anything else. For a large part of the book he weighs the pros and cons of ending his son's life, not considering what his son would want to do. We're not talking about a brain dead person here, just how his son's new life of incapacity and dependence will impact his parents. Mr. Galli, in the irony of ironies, is an attorney, and is facing the prospect of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in costs caring for his son over his lifetime, and has nobody to sue. That seems to be a strong undercurrent in this book. Not just "Whose Life Is It Anyway?", but who pays for the continuance of this life in anyplace other than a lousy nursing home? This is really an issue for our society to deal with. I'm not sure if I want my taxes and health insurance costs to go up enough to cover paying $500,000. a year for every handicapped person who wants to remain at home to get all of the services that are required. And I was also very turned off by Mr. Galli's appeal for funds to pay for his son's care. Christopher Reeve solicited money for his foundation to do research and give out "quality of life" grants to paralyzed individuals, not for his personal use. Mr. Galli wants people to send in money to his son's trust fund to lighten the burden on himself.
When I was a kid, and I am in my mid 50's, the phrase "accidents happen" was an accepted part of life. Today it seems that the accepted standard is that "negligence happens", and that there is almost always someone to sue.
Jeffrey Galli had an extremely unfortunate accident. But I do believe that accidents happen, and I will continue to take care of my family members, and the Gallis, and their family and friends, should take care of theirs. And when you can no longer care for your son the same dreadful nursing homes will be available to you that the rest of us are stuck with for our loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-01-19

This is a finely written memoir of a dreadful event -- a swimming accident that left the author's teenaged son paralyzed. The story takes us over the first days after the accident -- a time when the parents are trying to balance their son's options -- and the possibility of terminating life support. This is a very moving book, and I could not help but be profoundly impressed by the son, Jeffrey, along with his family and the network of supportive friends. I recommend this book without reservation. On another, perhaps less important note, I should mention that the author is also a very good writer. It is frequent in memoir books that I overlook style because of the content. But in this case, the content was very moving, as I said; the writing was very, very good. One last comment -- I cannot help but wonder if the negative reviewers finished the book. They might be surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Sharing Experiences.......2003-06-05

When my son was also injured in a diving accident in 1991 just pior to his 29th birthday, one of the counselors talked with me about the variances in each level of injury... and the variances within each level. This book relates totally ... and likewise, not at all. Such injuries do encompass such huge differences and yet still create huge bonds amongst SCI families and their friends. In 1991, I didn't have the availability of all the resources that can now be found so easily on the web... this improvement in availability is an additional tool in helping us learn and in helping us share/teach; alongside the medical improvements that increase the quality of life for those in wheelchairs. The wheelchair is what people see; the reality is so much more. As a mother, I appreciated reading the reactions from the other side of the parenting role... a father's honesty and truth... I know it was not easily exposed. Different angles of perception; same levels of love. Thank you, Jeffrey, as your father wrote... for sacrificing your privacy so he could tell the story.

5 out of 5 stars Brutally honest and brave.......2003-05-24

When a tragedy such as the one Richard Galli experienced in his family occurs, the family is expected to nod in agreement at platitudes from well-meaning aquaintences such as , "At least he's still alive." But sometimes we're not truly glad our loved one is alive. Sometimes our love is so deep and the prognosis is so bad that we want to say, "NO!" But it is rare to have the courage to admit it if our society would be more cmfortable otherwise.

Richard Galli obviously shared his feelings with rare honesty. He didn't tell a sappy story that would make us feel better. He told the truth. It is apparent that he didn't write for the popular commercial success, but for more personal and intimate reasons. Those who dare to read it with an open heart can benefit from his bravery in sharing his thoughts and feelings with no regard for what anyone not in his situation might think.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on Richard Galli!.......2003-02-26

For Richard Galli to think of killing his son because he became paralyzed is bad enough, but to write a book about it too is over the top! Who does he think he is to make the decision that, because his son's body is no longer perfect, he shouldn't be allowed to live? Are disabled people less than human? Unable to enjoy life?

This book is revolting.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to pattern reading.......2007-05-23

Before I bought this book I had only knitted scarves and other rectangular objects because I had a deadly fear of pattern reading. I'm pleased to say that the clear instructions and diagrams in Baby Knits for Beginners have allowed me to overcome my phobia! I have made two garments from the book so far, and both have come together without any drama, so I'm sure I'll make more. The pictures and projects are very appealing, and introduce new techniques at the same time. The reference section at the front with "learn to knit" diagrams is great, and I am still referring back to it when I knit things from other books and patterns. I would highly recommended it for anyone wanting to learn to knit attractive baby garments.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and easy.......2007-01-09

I am not a beginner, but with a new grandbaby, I am starting to knit baby items. This has some really precious things and Debbie Bliss makes it simple. Great for a knitting book collection.

4 out of 5 stars good starter book for baby knits.......2006-12-29

This is a good book for first-time knitters of baby items. The book has pretty, color photos of each project and good illustrations for the instructional parts. The information on seaming is extremely useful. I really like most of the patterns--they are about as straightforward as you can get while still looking nice.

As others have mentioned in their reviews, this book relies on Debbie Bliss yarns for all the patterns (at least one of which has since been discontinued), which may not be readily available to all readers. I've substituted a less-expensive yarn for my projects so far (shoes & hat, see customer images) and had no problems.

The patterns can be a bit difficult to understand and sometimes aren't as explicit as one would like. For example, on the baby shoes (done in seed stitch), it would be helpful for the pattern to state if the next row should be started with a purl or knit after casting on more stitches. Instead, it says, "seed stitch these," forcing the reader to count the newly cast on stitches to ensure they stay in-pattern.

    Patterns:
    - Garter stitch scarf
    - Garter stitch blanket
    - Sachets
    - Boat-neck sweater
    - Simple hat
    - Cushions with buttonholes
    - Jacket with seed stitch bands
    - V-neck cardigan with contrast ribs
    - Seed stitch shoes
    - Sweater with square set-in sleeves
    - Raglan cardigan with fully-fashioned shaping
    - Dress with eyelets
    - Shawl-collared jacket
    - Two-needle socks
    - Scarf with pocket
    - V-neck sweater with pockets

While maybe not the best resource for someone who wants to learn to knit, it does include the following instructions for beginners:

Casting on, Knit & Purl, Binding off, Increasing, Decreasing, Picking up stitches, and Seams

There are a few errors in the book. You can find pattern revisions for these on Debbie Bliss' website.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Babies/Perfect Patterns.......2006-11-04

I am a beginning knitter and this book is just perfect. The patterns are attractive (I want to make each of them), the instructions are clearly written in language I can understand and the illustrations are amazing. The basic knitting instructions at the beginning of the book are so helpful. I can see and read the description for stitches I have not yet attempted. The colors in the photographs help me imagine these hats and sweaters on my soon to arrive grandchild. This book is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Great Overall for Beginners.......2006-10-18

I have been knitting for the past five years and found this book to be a wonderful resource for beginners patterns and reference for basic knitting. The sketches of finishing stitches really helped me perfect my finishing, which I had been having trouble perfecting with other knitting books. The patterns are beautiful and modern, although if you are not using Debbie Bliss yarns make sure to use comparable yarns as far as the ply is concerned. The only reason that I wouldn't give the book a 5 is that there are several mistakes in some patterns. Some more recently printed copies have these corrected, but after receiving your copy I would reccomend double checking the print against the corrections noted on Debbie Bliss' website. Aside from that this is a wonderful book and I highly reccomend to beginning knitters.

              Book Description

"Moser's [book] does a splendid job reconstructing Connell's artistic pilgrimage in stunning color photographs of sculptural groups and separate pieces and in the thoughtful, succinctly-written text that places the sculptor's life and work within a cultural context . . . what Moser has offered us is a sensitive and comprehensive study of an artist whose work is as deeply rooted in region as it is in contemporary international art." --Southern Quarterly "Clyde Connell is no naive Grandma Self-Taught-Artist. This study of her work will be quite essential for the art world to see how significant work can be produced outside the myopic world of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles . . ." --Lowery S. Sims, Metropolitan Museum of Art Louisiana sculptor Clyde Connell observes, "I don't stay still in art, in life, in thinking, in feeling." In this study of her life and work, Charlotte Moser traces the changes that have led Connell from a proper plantation upbringing to civil rights activism and to the creation of nationally recognized art. Influenced by such modern movements as abstract expressionism and minimalism but also by black culture and religion and by primitive art, Connell's work reveals a mystical relationship with nature and a southerner's strong sense of place. Her growing national reputation has brought numerous awards and inclusion in several prestigious exhibits, including the exhibit Different Drummers at the Hirshhorn Museum of Art in 1988.
