For anyone venturing out into the wilds of Kansas and contiguous states, identifying plants just got a whole lot easier. This is the first book on Kansas wildflowers or weeds to appear in 25 years. It supersedes earlier guides not only in the number of species it includes-plus its coverage of grasses-but also in its spectacular, true-to-life color photos.
Michael Haddock has assembled a guide to 264 wildflowers along with 59 grasses, sedges, and rushes. These comprise many of the state's most common and conspicuous species-as well as some seldom encountered or listed in field guides-and include many that are found throughout the Great Plains.
Wildflowers are arranged first by dominant color groups for quick identification, then by family within each color category so that the user can compare a species with similarly colored flowers. Each entry for flower or grass includes a complete profile for any given plant: scientific name, family, common name(s), flowering period, height, distribution and habitat, life span, basic morphological characteristics, and notes on historical food and medicinal uses where applicable.
The book also features "finding aids" that allow one to narrow a specimen to a smaller number of possible matches-sometimes more quickly than by comparing it to the photos. These lists were created with the non-specialist in mind and are based on basic vegetative and floral features that are usually easy to determine.

This is a fantastic book for those that love the wildflowers of the Kansas Prairie. I have not found and easier guide to help me learn and ID Kansas wildflowers. However, if you are interested in the taxonomy and ID prior to or beyond the flowering stage, of those plants that interest you, this book may disappoint you. I would not fail to recommend it to like minded associates. Peace!

Very good pictures and text description. After reviewing its good quality I would have preferred more about growing them as well. This is a buy product for anyone that wants to know what they are looking at in the field. Not a good carry around field, in the back pocket book, but still a very good reference book.

This book may be small but it is a memoir packed with information. It was a very good read on many levels..family relationships and death and dying; those two are the main themes. The author writes with a hint of mystery and I liked that touch to the memoir.

Thisain't no how-to anything or a cry on Oprah's wide shoulders. This is something wonderfully other.
If Elizabeth Kubler-Ross met Carl Hiaasen, T.M. Shine would be their bastard child. This book is laugh out loud funny, except when it's ripping your guts out.
Bill Moyers sells Shine short when he alliterates in his testimonial that "Fathers . . ." is "marvelous, moving and memorable."
It is marvelous and moving. Quite so. But there are whole pages you'll hope aren't memorable, because feeling their wrenching impact once is as much as a person ought to bear.
Nice going Mr. Shine. Now please remind the folks at Amazon.com that people who read shouldn't be judged by their books' covers. END

I bought this book shortly after the death of my own father, and the subsequent reawakening of my friendship with my sister. I found the emotions and the passions in this book to resonate very deeply within my being - helping me to heal, since I learned that my feelings are common, valid and shared.

This is a poignant, compelling story that those of us who are baby-boomers will soon experience ourselves, if we haven't already. Mr. Shine bears all - his personal pain, frustrations and annoyances - dealing with the inevitable death of his father and realizing the experience is bringing him close to his brothers once again and the past they share. He indicts the medical community that, he felt, treated his father as a temporary occupant of a hospital bed. Like impatient FAA air traffic controllers, nurses and doctors were unwilling to be inconvenienced by adult children who were reluctant to let the scheduled departure take off on time. A quick and fulfilling read.

I've read Shine since he wrote for The Miami Herald's Tropic Magazine. He's an undiscovered master. This book takes his readers on a painful but rewarding journey--the death of his father. It's entirely worth your time, even at double the price.

Not much to add to the title. The book is written by experts and has more information than any other book I've read on Goldfish. The author also has a website with even more information. The illustrations are beautiful. If you intend to raise or just have pet Goldfish, this is the only book you will need.

I pretty much agree with everyone else, this is a very good resource for the experienced or newbie goldfish parent. There's probably more info here than I'll ever need (I don't plan on performing biopsies or even buying a microscope any time soon), but it's well-written and interesting stuff. The basics are covered just as thoroughly, and most of the questions I came up with were answered within a few paragraphs. The photography and production are amazing. An index would have been nice, but it's not necessary as the layout is straight-forward and everything is where you would expect it to be. I don't think I'll ever buy another goldfish book!
The Best Goldfish Book Out There!!!.......2007-03-17
My Fiance and I have six goldfish in a 55gal tank and when we started out (with 2 goldfish in a 5.5gal tank) we knew nothing about goldfish. This book has been our lifesaver. It has taught us how to properly care for our fish and has enlightened us to breed differences, breeding processes, and other outside information. It is an excellent resource that most thoroughly encompases goldfish care and I highly recommended it to anyone who has goldfish and wishes to keep their beloved pet healthy and alive. Since owning this book, our fish have doubled or tripled in size and we have been able to cure them of their diseases, instead of having to flush them sadly away.

This book did contain the information I was searching for, both visually and in written form. It was off-putting to have the book begin with the diseases, abnormalities, hazards, etc. before it ever got to "what are fancy goldfish". Would still recommend.
The best goldfish care book.......2007-02-20
This is, in my opinion, by far the best goldfish book ever written. It is the only book you will ever need to understand the requirements to keep your goldfish healthy. The book dispels many myths regarding goldfish care and is based on scientific observation. The book does not cover aspects such as setting up of a tank in detail but is devoted mainly towards caring for the species. It is a book for the advanced aquarist but can be helpful to the novice if read in conjuction with other books regarding the basics of aquarium equipment and setup procedures.

I have a number of goldfish books and am in search of the "Goldfish Bible". I was hoping this was it but will have to keep looking. This is an interesting book - no doubt about that. The author is a German enthusiast who spent a number of years in Japan and China and developed a clear passion for goldfish. The photos are first class and among the best photos of goldfish I've seen. The book includes a large poster of goldfish varities- too large to be practical (unless you're planning to frame it and put it on your wall....) but, with close study, it might help you work through the varieties. The information is interesting- especially the explanation of the different varieties and what to look for. No much you can't find in the other specialist texts but it certainly is quirky. Some of the written English is clumsy but charming in its own way. There are spelling and punctuation errors here and there. Overall, I have to admit I was expecting more from the book in the way of information because these were billed as the "specialist texts". So i was disappointed. But, if you're really into goldfish and can't get enough pictures or enough of the same information explained in a slightly different way, then this book is for you.
Great Book for the Coldwater Specialist.......2007-01-26
All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about many of the different beautiful fishes now coming into the aquarist trade or in this case specifically the cold water species Goldfish and Fancy Goldfish which are among the most beautiful cold water fishes. They are first class for identifying that fish that you have had for some time, but have not been able to put a name to.
This is a really beautiful book with some stunning photographs and for anyone interested in Goldfish in particular and fish-keeping in general it is a book to be treasured.

The 1st half of the book was pretty dry about the history and the last half was very informative. This was to be a present to a person who loves goldfish and would only like the last part of this book as it would answer her questions. I wouldn't give this to a beginner but to an experinced hobbist.

You cannot afford not to buy this book; more information per penny than other book on the subject. You will certainly want a more detailed book in addition to this book but if you keep fancy goldgish following only what is recommended here, you will have happy fish. It does not cover diseases in any great detail but does include helpful pictures of the ones that are covered. It does not mention salt, so is a little out of date in that respect. But truly, how can you go wrong for $2.95?!!

I purchased this book right after I bought an old house with a seriously overgrown garden. This book told me how to save the neglected fruit trees and rose bushes, and how to save the languishing perennial beds. Plus, it's a good guide to general garden maintenance. I'd love to see a west coast version.

While all of the mad men chase the homosexual partnership laws, and the right to pray on your lunch break, those in the faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ have forgotten satan true agenda of destroying the family. The greatest weapon is also the oldest trick in the book. Adultery is at an all time high in this country and no one knows it except the ones it has effected the most. Children are broken, friends and familys are torn apart. Lives are ruin by this sin which has somehow become the least of all human errors. Adultery is a sin and as destructive and murder and stealing, but most adulterous are unaware of this fact. Plain hard and simple, you need to arm yourself with the knowledge of it's entanglement or find yourself a victim of the roaring lion who goes to and fro seeking whom he may desire.

This is written from a Christian perspective and the author's first hand account of her own syndrome of "the grass looks greener". Thank God (literally) that she was able to restore her marriage. For anyone who is a friend of someone who has been horribly betrayed ... this is great for them and those who are emotionally supporting them through it. It also helps one understand both sides of the story so they don't take one side blindly, and detachment in the long-run aids in being a supportive friend. That said, it is urged that the one who is hurting seek out professional help as friends can never be fully objective. I found myself on the supportive friend side once in my life to someone who was very important to me at the time. Had this book been available it probably would have helped me be an objective support without taking on their pain of the drama, and being so drawn in to the toxic emotional aftermath that I had no choice but to extract myself completely for my own sanity.
Infidelity has been scorned in most religious thought circles because of this very thing ... the intense pain it causes everyone in the situation especially the innocent children and ... even those who committed the adultery. Society can accept men violating marital vows much more than women, but both genders are equally capable and ultimately responsible for some very serious damage to others and possibly themselves. Don't allow a mirage of the grass is always greener to ruin a situation that isn't that bad, can be improved, is worth fighting for - a marriage and a family unit. This is why wedding vows are till death do us part. Divorces done believing that a second marriage and partner will be better are statistically disproved given their higher failure rates on average. Whether the person who left or the person deserted finds a new spouse the residual bitter repercussions are so deep that any unfinished business (and with kids it is never over) spills over to a new relationship for the worse. Unless the marriage is violent (emotionally, verbally, physically, socially, etc) and life threatening hands down .... Those who stay find that they are happy they did two to five years later if both parties commit to working to make it better. Marriage is hard work and it makes you married not happy. Only you can do that .... Hence why the lure of an illusion that another man/woman will bring the true love happiness really ... is simply a mirage that soon evaporates. Assuming that it is true love between the spouses .... the question really is .... are you going to fight and stand your ground to keep it alive?

I very much enjoyed this delightfully personal and emotional journey through the backroads of a France not previously known. The beautiful illustrations by one of my favorite artists gave the reader vivid images of this gorgeous landscape. For a non-artist, it was especially interesting to experience the journey through an artist's eye...an artist very worthy of the invitation to paint Monet's gardens. The book is a wonderful collaboration by a gifted painter and a talented writer.

It's 10:30 P.M. and I just finished Colors of France: A Painting Pilgrimage. I couldn't put it down---the book is a phenomenal experience. The reader journeys with Margaret while Joan's text flows from Margaret's perceptions. Both women are exceptionally talented. This is a wonderful book.
