Great overview for planning your trip.......2007-08-24
This series of books are interesting to read and have beautiful pictures and maps. They are wonderful for armchair travel and to help in planning a trip as they give a wonderful overview of the history, culture and most interesting places to visit of the areas they represent. There is no detail as to lodging or restuarants so this is not the guide if that's what you're looking for, but I have enjoyed them and packed them on trips for help in planning sightseeing excursions and to help me understand and appreciate the history and culture of the places I'm visiting. They have enriched my travel experience.

Good-looking but hard to lug.......1997-05-19
Insight's City Guides combine stunning photography with literate text and a smattering of basic travel information. The Insight Venice guide is worth adding to your bookshelf, but its practical advice is getting a bit long in the tooth and its heft makes it less than ideal as a take-along guide. - Durant Imboden, Venice for Visitors, http://govenice.miningco.co

NOTHING SPECIAL.......2006-08-05
Good historical writing involves use of the primary sources of the period and this book doesn't do that - it simply reshuffles and repeats other histories of the era. Particularly annoying are the repeated misspellings of German phrases and names.
Outstanding! Among the Best Out There!.......2005-06-10
Here we have a terrifically lucid, readable, and even entertaining account that truly does answer the question, how such a seeming loser from nowhere could rise to become the undisputed leader of the German Nazi party. The tragic and horrible conditions in Germany between 1918-1924 are described in haunting detail, the economy a wreck with inflation reaching 1 billion% by the time of the Novemeber, 1923 Putsch. The cast of characters includes the mesmorizing speaker Hitler, plus the weird general Ludendorrf, Rohm, Hess, the Strassers, Drexler, Goring, and many others, including the WC Fields-like Putzi Hafstaengel, who kept contact with foreign journalists. And the actual events of the BeerHall Putsch have their horrid moments plus some Keystone Kops moments too! In short, about the best early Nazi history out there!
Outstanding.......2003-11-13
This well-researched journal of Hitler's early days will really get you thinking. You cannot understand World War 2 or the Holocaust without learning about what went on with this man before the age of 40. I recommend this to anyone and everyone who loves history or is doing a report. It is out of print so you can either get it used or get it at your local library. Whatever you do, you will enjoy this great book.
An Engrossing, Fascinating Story.......2003-08-12
I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone interested in reading about the causes and origins of German fascism. Any book on Hitler can always veer off into the cartoonish, reinforcing the idea that the man was a monster. That approach devalues the very serious underpinnings of Hitler's ascent that Bracelen Flood describes: The Versaille Treaty and the short-sighted behavior of the victors of World War I; the intense racialism of Bavaria; the sheer incompetence of Germany's leaders; and the brilliance of Hitler's campaign to rule the country. Telling details are on every page of the book, but Bracelen Flood is very careful to qualify his observations when the evidence is conflicted. He sees the interaction between the anecdote and the big picture, using several devices to ground the reader in the reality of what happened. Best of all, Bracelen Flood's extensive research allows us to understand what people involved in the events were thinking. At several points, I was struck by how, above all else, Hitler was abetted by luck and the fact that he was consistently underestimated by people who should have known better. The end result is both a study of a pivotal portion of the last century and a valuable tool to ensuring that nothing like it ever happens again.
I'm not a history buff and yet..........2002-12-07
...this book captivated my attention. Very clearly and well written, Flood takes you almost step by step from Hitler's early years as a floundering nobody to the flourishing of what became the Nazi party under his rule. Be advised that this is as far as the timeline goes. The historical context is thoroughly discussed, a necessity considering that the rise of a man such as Hitler happened as a reaction to the political and cultural and social stagnation that occured in Germany after WWI.
Customer Reviews:
Do don't know squat..........2007-05-16
Charles Bracelen Flood explains the life of Adolph Hitler and how he came to power following WWI. Want to know the true meaning of a story then you have to go back to the beggining and this is the book that does just that. Read this and all you think you knew will take on a new meaning. Your understanding of WWII and events today will take on a new under current.

Dementia: the LOSS . . . the LOVE . . . the LAUGHTER.......2007-07-04
It was good to read to a book about dementia from a writer who knows first hand what it's like to take care of someone with dementia. It was very informative and funny in places. I am taking care of my mother who has dementia and have found the book to be quite helpful. I recomend this book to anyone who is going through the journey of dementia with a loved one.

A book of hope and answers........2004-01-30
Three years ago my husband and I moved in to take care of his 91 year old mother.
Now at 94 she is in mid term dementia. After one night when she was having difficulty with sleeping and staying in bed,I began to wonder what we were in for.
I went on the Internet to see what I could find out about Dementia and what to expect. While searching I found a book written by Sunny Vogler. Her mom had dementia. The book was about her experiences. I sent for the book.
When I began reading I could not put the book down. She brought to life what we would be walking into. Her sense of humor throughout the whole of the book gave us both hope we, could do this. I learned to expect the crazy visits from imaginary friends.
The first night my mother-in-law had a lady in her bed trying to steal her walker, I could hear Sunny and remember how she handled these times. I did not have to panic. I could relax and know this is just the beginning.
Sunny brought the truth of how to walk one day at a time. Enjoy the moments while you can. Don't wait until the end to start emptying out the house. Things we did not think about. Who to call when the day does arrive. She has all the names in order.
One of the greatest things was to find her email address at the end of the book. When I go to the pits for a day she is there to anchorage ,and let us know we can do this. It is a must read for those of us who give up our life and move in with our aging parent. Her humor keeps us from getting so stressed about the day mom will no longer remember how to swallow her food or get up out of bed. We have learned from Sunny's book to just enjoy the moment we have.
I have also learned even though I do not have her wonderful sense of humor, I being a serious person, I can trust each new day because I run to the book. Thank you Sunny.

Book Description
Green wood from a newly felled tree is easy to cut, bend, and shape. That is why working with green wood remains a time-honored rural craft for producing rustic-style furniture and other outdoor fixtures. Though there are many carpentry books on the market, few among them focus on this increasingly popular subject. Alan and Gill Bridgewater's brand new title is precisely what green wood carpenters have been looking for. Following a comprehensive introductory section on tools, techniques, and types of wood, the authors present 15 easy-to-follow projects that will result in attractive and useful objects made of green wood. They include a trellis, a garden bench, a rustic slab wood gate, and a backyard pergola, to cite just a few. Directions for all projects are heavily illustrated, and range from "easy" to "ambitious." Many can be completed within a single weekend. Large full-color photos of all finished pieces show do-it-yourselfers what their projects will look like when completed. There are 110 full-color photos in total, plus 60 instructive illustrations.

After reading and building some of the projects in Brian Cameron's book on making bent willow furniture the "15 Easy Weekend Projects Using Freshly Cut Wood" looks like a keeper. I'm really looking forward to getting out to the lake and cutting some more willow!

Customer Reviews:
Every on can learn this.......2007-08-24
Very usefull for people who need to know about those subjects. Easy to understand!
It did help me a lot!
Thank God for the authors and this book!.......2007-03-07
I was given this book by one of its authors (Dr. Stulberg) as part of the pre-op regimen. I was 45 when my hip was replaced by Dr. Stulberg. I was back to work in about 6 weeks and still feel great today, 5 years later, praise God; (I even cycle/commute over 20 miles)...while some ortho docs didn't offer me any hope of regaining my 100% of normal; only a lot of limitations, S. D. Stulberg gave me hope; the Lord gave me healing!
I credit this book with giving me the knowledge I needed to face this surgery with the right attitude. I'm a big coward and this book helped me alot. Need a hip?...go to a surgeon who won't give you a lot of heavy MD lingo and instead listens to and answers your questions.
Excellent Book.......2006-03-03
I bought this book prior to hip surgery. It saw me all the way through the process, and I'm now doing the recommended exercises. I've had a super fast recovery, and credit the book so much that I purchased two more for my hippy friends.
alternative to hip replacement surgery.......2005-10-24
I was looking for a book to guide me in postponing or avoiding hip replacement surgery. The title "The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge" prompted me to buy this book, but I was disappointed in the book because so little of it was devoted to really taking charge of your physical situation so that you can strengthen your hip and achieve its maximum flexability. A better choice for those wishing to do everything in their power to avoid or postone surgery would be Dr. Klapper's book, "Heal Your Hips", which is also available from Amazon.com
a must have.......2004-10-13
if you have arthitis of the knee or hip, this book is a must have. i had a total hip replacement four weeks ago, and this book was my pre and post op bible. the o.t. at the hospital saw me reading it and asked to borrow it. it will now be standard reading for all of her patients.
there are advances in joint surgery that have occurred since the book was published, but the general information is excellent. my new hip is ceramic on ceramic through an "anterior approach". at the time of publication, the author mentions both as future improvements. however, the pre and post op preparation, the patient experiences, and the overall handling of the subject are worth the price of admission.

Opening the past and the mind of Joseph Brodsky.......2002-11-10
JOSEPH BRODSKY, LENINGRAD: FRAGMENTS succeeds on every level. For those not familiar with Brodsky's brilliant poetry I would recommend that you spend time with WATERMARKS, his tribute to the city of Venice, before coming to this book. Once the gentle subtleties of his poetry are in mind, then spending time perusing this pictorial essay of Brodsky's face and the scenes of Leningrad (the old name for St. Petersburg is used because that was the city's Soviet name used when Brodsky lived there) will form a complete picture of this amazing expatriate. Mikhail Lemkhin addresses not only the pictorial influences on the poet, but also adds some words of wisdom. The tribute at the end of the photographs, in some of Sunsan Sonntag's most eloquent writing, is a fitting closure to this very lovely book. Highly recommended.
Through His Glasses, Face to Face.......2000-06-20
If an appreciation of the personal perspective of the poet can deepen the experience of his words, then Lemkhin's photographic tribute to Brodsky's beloved home belongs on our bookshelves alongside the poetry books and essays of the Nobel laureate. Except for an intimate foreword by Milosz, a moving afterword by Sontag, and brief postnotes in which Lemkhin provides background details on several of the images, the message of this book is delivered entirely through black-and-white images. The voice of those visions comes through most clearly when one imagines viewig through the eyes of the poet himself, not only in the streets and the statues, the skies and the stories of Leningrad, but in the mirror of the close-up snapshots of Brodsky himself placed throughout the collection of pictures. Even the mediocre artistic quality of some of the individual snapshots can be forgiven as the soft footsteps of the poet can be heard stepping through his own lines in the movement of these deeply personal worlds of his own home.
Photographic masterpieces.......1999-08-10
I greatly enjoyed the two books by Mikhail Lemkhin: "Missing Frames" and "Fragments". I am especially moved by portraits. There is something about the portraits that make them very different from most others. The pictures are not posed, but don't seem to be too candid either. I get the impression that the subject is aware of the photographer, but is not posing for him, at least not physically. It is as if the subject is exposing his/her inner soul to the camera. The photographs work, in deeply satisfying way, very well. I know I will look at them again and again.
remarkable book.......1999-08-02
Mikhail Lemkhin's book is a book in the fullest sense: not an album of exquisite photo studies, but a composition which transcribes a train of thought. The pages roll like clouds across the sky: Look, this is what we cherished in our lives, this is what happens to people, to stone, to memory, thanks to a little acid rain, that most noiseless rain, they call it - `time`. This is an experience of the `literature of silence`. Like a telepathic séance. The Covetous Knight's soliloquy over a chest of devaluated bank notes. Poor Knight! Over a hundred shots taken at the speed of 1/100 - in all, why that's just around a second! Someone else's story, made up mostly of the same things or signs as mine or yours, only linked in a different way to yield a personal fate. In particular, or rather, most importantly, it included a City which inspired a dream about the meaning of existence, and a Contemporary who succeeded in rendering the tonality of that meaning. But the second has passed, having absorbed almost all that could be held dear. The light wanes. The sound is off. And a question arises: Out of that which man has lost forever, is there anything that he possesses for eternity? The gaze, seasoned with peppery essence of silver, shows irony, pain, and tenderness.
Samuil Lurie, Neva Magazine (St.Petersburg, Russia)
Lemkhin's photography replies to Brodsky's verse........1998-11-25
Photography informs the poetics of Joseph Brodsky, photographer's son and himself no novice to the camera. Mikhail Lemkhin's double homage to the recently deceased poet and the city of his -- and Lemkhin's -- birth should be thought of as photography's own reply to Brodsky. Lemkhin calls his _Joseph Brodsky, Leningrad_ a photo-poem; to this one might only add that it is a particularly Brodskian photo-poem -- Brodskian not in its type of montage but in its predilection for montage, not in its sensibility but in the realities it conveys. To imitate Brodsky is to traduce Brodsky. Lemkhin understands that Brodsky's prime legacy is intellectual independence; his photography engages Brodsky's poetry rather than illustrates it, works with, rather than within, its visual counterparts of Brodsky's speech. The end-result belongs on the bookshelf as much as it does on the coffee-table.

The Human Side of Saint Patrick.......2005-10-27
This book for children on about the 4th grade reading level is a very human account of Saint Patrick. It starts with his parents worrying about him as a wayward boy. It ends with his resignation and reminiscing with the new bishop who he had spiritually nurtured from before the new bishop was even a Christian. But you will not find any miracles discussed in this book. There are 7 black and white pictures in this book.
