Sure, great recipes. Interesting anecdotes. But there is a paucity of photos to help identify the mushrooms whose names abound. A page or two of plates giving mushroom photos with their names would go a long way. I am still faced with bushels and bushels of mushrooms I could buy, but no way to know even what category each falls into. Where I shop, mushrooms do not come with name tags.

Finally, a field book for mushrooms tuned to the local fungi. I have a "field" book that weighs 11# and has more than 1200 mushrooms in it. It covers two continents and is so comphrehensive you can't rely upon it for anything. It came from the publishert with six slipped in corrections, two of which involved deadly shrooms. This gem covers my region, only the safest choices, and is clear about the dangerous choices. So what if I can't safely pick some rarely seen variety, or some variety that is a near replica of virosa treacherosa. Who wants a liver transplant anyway?

This is a re-release of a 1960 booklet. It is of interest to historical mycologists but not very useful to amateurs who need a book to keep them away from toxic mushrooms. There are some good pictures; unfortunately, most of them are on the cover of the book.

I've only briefly skimmed through this book, basically because I didn't see any information that would be particularly helpful. Granted, that could be because I already own and have read "The Insider's Guide to Washington, D.C." and "Frommer's Washington, D.C." I would recommend both of those books over "The Irreverent Guide." I bought this book thinking it might provide me with a more honest, less deferential review of things, letting me know what really was and wasn't worth my time. However, I haven't seen anything new or particularly different about this book. This book would do the job, but the other books are much more thorough, and I would recommend either one of them instead.
Inside info for the Outsider.......2000-04-15
If you don't have a cousin living in D.C. this guide is the next best thing. It's good scoop from a native. I enjoy visiting the District and this book has helped me get beyond the mall to new places of interests. I especially appreciate the info on safety, given that other guides are squeamish about this subject.

After reading a library copy of this, I understood the basics of the stock market much better than I had from other books. All the investment approaches he offers could be considered conservative. If you want a good book on conservative approaches to investing, then this is it.

I borrowed this from my local library, and although it does seem helpful, I'm going to have to purchase a newer volume that was written after the dawn of the internet age.
While the author spends most of the introduction explaining what a technical marvel WordPerfect is, there is no mention of doing invesment research using the internet. Although I'm sure there is lots of other information here, this shortcoming has proven fatal to me.

I am sorry to report that this book is both poorly written and poorly edited. If you're interested in investing in Dow Dogs, which is what the author touts, you'll be much happier with books like Beating the Dow (Micheal O'Higgins) or the investment books from The Motley Fool.
The simplest way to beat the market........1999-01-21
The ideas I have developed over the last 33 years are all packed between the covers of this book--at least the ones that were worth preserving. Nothing important has been left out. No secrets are being denied to my readers. What's more, my innovative methods of stock selection are entirely my own and have not been purloined from another portfolio strategist. As a consequence, this book should be worthwhile reading for veteran investors. On the other hand, I am assuming many of my readers are new to the world of Wall Street and may not be familiar with the jargon of the investment world. To bridge this gap, I have devoted a chapter to terms and concepts that you will need if you are to become an effective investor.

This has to be one of the best books I have ever read. I guess personally having met Ms. Brunell, just makes it even more special. She has related a very touching story about Samson and Baby Sister, two bluebirds she adopted and raised. It is both funny and bittersweet, as you follow the lives of these two little birds. If you love stories about the human spirit, and overcoming, you will be able to relate to this beautifully told account. If you are ever down, and need a lift, this story is just the right one for you. I treasure my autographed copy, and will read it again, and again.

This is a great book - I wasn't the least bit interested in quilting of any kind until I got this book. Barbara's "anything goes" attitude got me hooked and allowed my creativity to blossom.

This book is full of wonderful, colorful projects and techniques. It opened my eyes to the potential of my sewing machine. My only issue is that, to me, this isn't really crazy quilting. She uses strips of fabric whereas real C.Q. uses different shapes. This is more modified log cabin. Nonetheless, if you love color and embellishments, this book has a lot to offer.

I never heard of crazy quilt before and was never interested in quilting methods. This book changed my attitude and gave me the tools I needed to explore this old fashion medium. I simply love the color of the projects. I already done two and can not wait to continue. The explaination are clear, easy and anybody with a minimal sewing experience could do it. Great book, a lot of enthusiasm. A winner book!

The author's enthusiasm for crazy quilting is quite apparent as she writes with great passion. This is not your ORDINARY crazy quilt book. Most embellishments are machine stitched and the fabrics used are bold and vibrant. The projects shown are purses, lampshades, throws, and more. What is especially wonderful is the gallery. My favorites - the crazy quilted window treatment, the upholstered crazy quilted chair and the dog bed! The author's instructions are very clear. Her pictures are wonderful! I am very happy with the book and would recommend it, aside from the great projects and patterns it also makes for great eye candy!

This is another great book by Barbara. The illustrations are excellent, and very inspiring. Some people need a little boost to get their creative juices flowing, and this book will certainly do that! Considering what her classes cost, and the costs of her patterns, this book is a real deal.

I liked the quick technique for the patchwork bags explained in this book, but still feel that the bags in the first book have the edge. As usual the photograpy is fabulous, and the colours are a feast for the eyes. If I had to buy only 1 book, I would buy the first one though.

Holding The Home Together.......2005-02-27
I listened to Jodie Lynn speak at a workshop last year and her book, Mommy,CEO is a trademark of her energy and commonsense tips. I found the book essential reading for all parents who wants to see their kids succeed in life.
She tells us that we should always love our children but we don't always have to like them but also persuades us to blame the behavior and not the child.
We have children that came to live with us from their dad's house and to my shock, they were full of labels like, idiot, sum bag, stupid, retard, and things I cannot write here.
After several months of family therapy, we are on our way as a mended healthy family. It's still a long road but we have jumped many hurdles.

Author Coogan's works on Irish history tend to be long, very well researched, deeply documented and rich in detail. They are written for the serious, not the casual reader. This biography of Eamon de Valera is no exception. Moreover, de Valera s life was complicated and controversial. He is scarcely a hero to many Irish Americans familiar with their native country's past. Most of all, he suffers-pitifully it says here- from comparisons to the true hero of Ireland?s struggle for independence-Michael Collins. Bad feeling between them was directly responsible for Ireland?s tragic Civil War in the mid 1920s. This reviewer freely admits to his definite prejudices against de Valera and one suspects that author Coogan agrees. The advice from here is to read Coogan s Michael Collins: The Man Who Made Ireland first. Those with ravenously whetted appetites may proceed-with caution- to this weighty and gloomy text. This reviewer's father once told him that one cannot understand modern Ireland without understanding de Valera. That much may be true-but why torture oneself? Why devote hours reading about a gloomy, narrow minded and devious Spanish Irishman such as this? And a math teacher no less! The bottom line is that both Collins and de Valera inspire strong feelings. Some actual knowledge of Irish history deepens this effect. The result is an abiding difficulty in writing a neutral review on one of those men just after you have just posted one on the other. This reviewer urges his amazon friends to read all the posted opinions on this weighty effort from the gifted, if long winded Tim Pat Coogan. Too much hand wriniging? Welcome to Irish history 101.
Long but thorough history of Irish leader.......2002-11-19
Tim Pat Coogan compiles a sober and thorough history of Eamon deValera, the most influential Irish leader of the twentieth century. Combining painstaking research with first-hand accounts, Coogan presents a well-rounded portrait of this most complicated and controversial figure. Those who hold deValera in a saintly reverence may be angered at some of the less flattering depictions of the "lay cardinal." But this ranks as a most important read for anyone interested in tracking the course of twentieth century Ireland.

Eamon Devalera The Man Who Was Ireland.......2000-04-01
In many ways a superior work, but only if you are aware of Coogan's bias, which is blindly pro Collins and unfairly anti Devalera. An anology would be a Nixon apologist [i.e. Pat Buchanan or William Safire] writing an "Objective Biography" of John F. Kennedy. Despite their obvious intellectual talents,neither is capable of an even handed analysis. Devalera was a Giant of the 20 th Century,despite the fact that he represented only a very small nation on the World Scene for nearly 40 yrs. He was the central figure in the the War of Independence with G.B., + in the formation + leadership of Eire in the League of Nations, W.W.11, + post W.W. 11 /U.N., + as a respected + influential nuetral leader.Coogan for all is literary skills, is simply incapable of objective analysis except on rare instance. The detail is impressive, the sources are broad, and the scope is massive ,but he simply finds it virtually impossible to see what history has proven; that Dev was the superior soul in intellect, vision, ethics, and historical perspective. Collins was a good man , but seriously flawed with human weaknesses; while Dev...not a saint,who really is?....was a monumental tower of basic decency,judgement, + historical insight + instinct. Harry Boland,a great Irish patriot, who was extremely close to both Collins + Devalera, choose Dev, + the Collins' forces made him pay with his life. He declared that Dev was "the true Chief" and that the greatness of the man lay in his " incorruptability".If the reader knows Irish history, and if he/she can seperate the bias from the facts, they will gain meaningful insights into Dev and the glory that was his Ireland.
