Writing style repetitive, but info is there..........2005-03-25

Felt like I had to wade through the same information multiple times to get to the next bit of information. The author seemed to feel it important to repeat herself regarding how difficult it might be to contemplate your own death and how hard it can be to choose the right person to be in charge of your animals after you go.

Other than that, the information is there. In the main text most of it is contained in paragraphs you have to scan though to get to the main points and details. I would have liked more tables, bullet lists etc. since I was looking for a reference on "how to", but I guess the almost 70 pages of appendices help make up for that.

If you think your best friend in the world or your relatives will happily take care of your pets in the event that you can't, "think again."

Your friends might not be willing to say "no" while you are alive, but what happens later? I know for a fact, even my mother would not want to look after my cats because she doesn't really like cats. It would be unfair to the cats and to her to leave them in her care. Not everyone loves pets, that is for sure.

While thinking about your soul is the most important thing you can ever do, thinking about what will happen to your pets if you are not here to look after them, could be a close second. Especially for those of us who think of our pets as being like kids.

Apparently, many dogs, cats and other pets found in shelters end up there because their owners became ill or were unable to care for them. Some owners died without leaving plans for their pets' next home. Unfortunately, many of these animals are euthanized because they can't find homes.

Simple, Straightforward, Instructive.......2006-03-23

A really excellent resource for a new or slightly experienced craftsman who would like a good introduction to getting more out of his/her tablesaw than the usual, basic cuts. Good photos, good explanations of the jigs, and most importantly: No time wasted discussing (ugh) "how to choose a table saw."

My main gripe with most tablesaw books is that so many pages are wasted to describe how to choose a saw--something many folks (myself included) have already done by the time they get around to buying a tablesaw book. Burton skips all that fluff, delves straight into the basics of choosing the right blade for the task, and then explains the nuts-and-bolts of setting up the table saw to: (1) make basic and tricky cuts with precision, (2) accomplish basic and semi-advanced joinery, (3) perform basic and advanced shaping operations, (4) cut and manage sheet stock, (5) tune up your saw, and (chapters 6 - 8) build three practical pieces of furniture which put your new skills to the test.

I didn't bother to build any of the furniture, but I have learned at least half a dozen solid, useful techniques that will help me perform all kinds of joining and cutting operations I never realized a tablesaw could perform so easily and accurately.

This book is a particularly good resource for a new woodworker or an "advanced novice" wanting to take his/her skills to the next level. It's not as remedial as many similar books, as it assumes a basic understanding of saws on the reader's part (No tedious discussions of which end of the saw is the sharp end, or what a "mitre slot" is used for.) No, it won't make you a fine craftsman overnight (what book could?), and it's not as chock full of elborate jigs and tips as many other books. But unlike most other books, there's little here that is just fluff. While many books try to teach you 1,000 complicated jigs for 1,000 different scenarios you may never need or care about, this book focuses on basic, practical, simplified jigs that will help you on a regular basis. There's something here to help you with just about any cut you are likely to make.

Thankfully, Burton is one of the few woodworkers who still believes it's possible to align and maintain a tablesaw for accurate cuts without needing special measuring equipment. There's no need for dial gauges or special miter-slot devices here. Just a basic bevel gauge, carpenter's square, ruler, block of wood, and/or dial calipers will do the trick--and Burton explains how. Again, very practical.

Finally, worthy of note to some, the dimensions for building the jigs are provided in both metric and imperial measurements. A small detail, but a nice touch for those folks who love the metric system.

I took a cabinet making class from Ken Burton last year. He's an exceptional craftsman with remarkable range. This book is very much like his class... there's no fluff. It's practical, accurate, and usable.

I feel like I'm repeating the gist of the first reviewer's comments, but it seems worth the effort.

Overall I was impressed by the photo quality, the no-nonsense approach, practical safety (I get tired of excess warnings), and the author's cheapness! (sorry, Burton) He does NOT make jigs that are works of art - he uses 2x pine, thin MDF... his outfeed table is an old L-shaped kitchen counter with most of the original carcass... [I hope this makes sense - I admire his attitude and I find his frugality refreshing.] He makes featherboards but also uses a commercial featherboard.

Chapter 1 is basic info but there is a lot of good stuff, including making a splitter, modifying your miter guage so it fits the slot better, a different method of blade removal, CHEAP sleds, etc.

Chapter 2 is joinery - box joint, lock joint, shims for dados, splines... Even a suggestion to have a dedicated dove tail blade with teeth ground to 10 degrees to make the waste clean-out easier.

Chapter 3 is shaping - he even shows molder blades. He has a jigs to follow a pattern (like is used with routers), coves, half coves.

Chapter 4 is cutting sheet stock. I personally have decided 4x8 sheets should be cut to slightly oversized with something like a Festool Saw or a EurekaZone jig and then trimmed on a TS - the infeed & outfeed stuff is just too hard in my opinion.
Chapter 5 is tuning up your waw - it's a broad brush, obviously, but he hits the right notes.

Chapter 5-8 (1 chapter in my head) has 3 projects to use the new skills you learned in the first 100 pages. A spice cabinet with a paneled door, a small valet for your dresser, and a demilune table that includes bentwood lamination out of cherry that was "table sawn" on his table saw. I liked the examaples - and I thought the how-to photos really did a good job. it worked well for my ADD addled brain!

Excellent Tutorial and Reference.......2005-03-17

This book has a ton of valuable, useful information. Burton's approach to table saw techniques is both concise and easy to follow .

The author takes a no-nonsense approach to building jigs an fixtures for the saw, de-emphisizing the myth that you need to spend big $$$ to get a good quality, useful jig or fixture. (Patterns and construction details for all of the jigs he discusses are provided in the book).

He takes you step-by-step through safety, setup, tuning, as well as simple and complex joinery and shaping. This is an excellent guide and reference that I keep at the ready.

The writers use real world examples and experiences to the reader and give a candid understanding of Lesbian life. It never occured to me that Happy and Lesbian could be in the same sentence. Through the support I have recieved and this book I now believe it is possible. This book is a whole relationship guide which is cool. Not many books take you from how to meet them to how to live with them. The history and terminology and everything included makes it a very helpful and well rounded book for everyone not just those coming out

Right after I came out, I read how to be a happy lez. I walked into a gay book store in down town Long beach called Equal Writes.........I told the man standing at the counter that I had just come out and needed to learn how to be a lesbian.........he reccommended this book and a few others.......

Shortly after reading this book I had my first date with a woman @hamberger mary's in Newport Beach.......On our date I kept prattling away about how wonderful this book is..........she said "god Mel......sounds like your trying to be "the perfect lesbian", where are your rainbow pom pom's?"

I think when anyone is trying to adapt to a new culture and traffic within a new people group that they need a guide to teach them proper protocal......... I must admit I still have many questions.......I probably will until the day I die..........

What this book helped me to learn was that it's ok to be a gay woman.........its ok to love other women........I am not a pervert that should be locked in a shack in the desert and left to die........

My coming out process started years ago when I became a "fruit fly" (women who is friends with gay men but does not want to sleep with them) and started frequenting gay clubs.........when I came out to my male friends........they helped me as much as they could..........but one thing I have learned from reading this book........gay men and lesbian women come from two different countries.........We have different clubs......customs..........culture.........and languages..........a gay man can not be a lesbians tour guide through lesbian territory...........so whats a girl to do who does not know anyone it town??? How is she to meet people and find the lesbian watering hole?????

Between the two world wars, middle-class America experienced a "marriage crisis" that filled the pages of the popular press. Divorce rates were rising, birthrates falling, and women were entering the increasingly industrialized and urbanized workforce in larger numbers than ever before, while Victorian morals and manners began to break down in the wake of the first sexual revolution.

Vivien Green Fryd argues that this crisis played a crucial role in the lives and works of two of America's most familiar and beloved artists, Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) and Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Combining biographical study of their marriages with formal and iconographical analysis of their works, Fryd shows how both artists expressed the pleasures and perils of their relationships in their paintings. Hopper's many representations of Victorian homes in sunny, tranquil landscapes, for instance, take on new meanings when viewed in the context of the artist's own tumultuous marriage with Jo and the widespread middle-class fears that the new urban, multidwelling homes would contribute to the breakdown of the family. Interesting read. I found the information on point for what I was researching. There are some distracting typos that made me reduce to a four star rating.

Errors..........2003-12-07

Proofreading is critical, especially in a text where people will be risking money in the market. There are some very basic errors even before the book gets to the more difficult stuff:
Page 36:
"2500 shares of ABC at $10 = $5000
50 shares of XYZ at $10 = 2500"
(Obviously these are both wrong.)

Page 47:
"You short 100 shares of Great Drop at $100 per share. The stock hits $110...the next day you get a confirmation from your brokerage firm. It says you covered the stock at $11 and sustained a $100 loss."
By my calculations, if you bought 100 at $100 ($10,000 total) and covered the same 100 at $11 you would have an $8,900 GAIN ($10,000 - $1,100 = $8,900).

There are, however, many good ideas for targeting a potential short: insider trading, proxy information details, overvaluations, etc, as well as the risks involved: buy-in, short squeeze, no-borrow, IRS regulations, etc. If the text is reprinted and the errors fixed, it would be a good read...

If you are a professional regarding short selling, I suppose this book will not cut it. For the person getiing their feet wet, this book is very informative, and gives a good basic for shorting. Excellent overview of the short selling process.......2003-02-15

With the problems in the markets -- which seem to just continue -- this book provides a way to make money. I always hear about short selling, such as on CNBC and the Wall Street Journal, but never hear any explanations. This book shows how to get started and how to deal with the pitfalls, such as the short squeeze. This is a very good book and highly recommended.

I was enticed by the first 2 chapters ... In summary, if you understand the basic of finance, just don't waste your money on this .... If you don't know finance, this book is a misguidance. Read the first 2 chapters and that's it.

Appendix F, Sample Bylaws flawed. Section 3.11 states "Directors have no voting power"; which is contradicted by section 10.04 which states that a "majority vote of a quorum consisting of directors"....

Many more flaws - if you use the book be vigilant of misinformation.

Public schools in the United States are faced with all kinds of funding challenges. Many are seeking creative ways to harness community support and increase funding availability, especially to fund "non-core" areas such as arts, in-service professional and paraprofessional training, athletics, and capital expenditures.

Over the last 20 years or so, about one-fourth of America's 16,000 school districts have established some form of endowment or private foundation (either district-wide or school-specific) to supplement other school revenue to meet identified needs and expand opportunities for students and teachers.

Rarely have I found a book on a specialized subject so accessible and easy to use. The book's authors take the reader through the process of conceptualizing, developing, and implementing a public school foundation, often using a plausible question and answer format to communicate concepts and steps in an almost conversational way.

The book assumes that the reader is an individual who is interested in starting a public school foundation -- a teacher, administrator, PTA or school board member. Two excellent points are made very early in the book. First, it doesn't take a lot of money to make a real impact in a school district -- $10 or $20 per student can translate into some very useful, innovative, and change-provoking projects. Second, it's not necessary to "front-load" a school foundation with lots of money in order to generate a trickle of grant awards. The enthusiasm of the anticipated reader is matched and bolstered by the authors' enthusiasm for the subject.

Creating Foundations for American Schools also addresses the issue of existing foundations that have lost momentum or otherwise failed to meet expectations. One of the real keys to success is building and maintaining interest and momentum behind the foundation and its mission. The importance of coordinating foundation activities with alumni associations and other school-based fundraising is discussed as well.

The appendices include a wealth of forms, checklists, sample letters, etc., to use in the foundation-building process. Appendix E was a real surprise -- an annual survey of state laws governing charitable solicitation, complete with contact information for each state's regulators.

This is a well-executed book on a timely subject. It deserves to be used -- not just on the shelf -- wherever public school foundations are in place or contemplated.

"Avshalomovs' Winding Way" is the story of a father and a son who were pioneers in bringing together the musical traditions of Europe, Asia and America. The father, Aaron Avshalomov, was born in Russia and worked as composer and conductor in China in 1917-1949, using European musical forms to explore Chinese musical ideas. The son, Jacob Avshalomov, born in China, made music in America as composer, conductor and teacher, collaborating with many of the greatest musicians of our time.

This double autobiography assembles the letters of Aaron with narrative by Jacob to tell in their own words how two very different people overcame daunting obstacles and brought great music to appreciative audiences in China and America.

For 40 years Jacob Avshalomov was music director of the Portland (Oregon) Youth Philharmonic, in which I performed, and a pillar of the city's cultural life. This book is full of the joys of collaboration with other musicians and with practitioners of the other fine arts, by a person who was a master of collaboration.

This book finally and forever puts to rest the myth that Jews aren't sportspeople. The list of Jewish competitors at the Olympic Games, winners of numerous medals despite a century of Anti-Semitism and restrictions, is staggering. Paul Taylor has done a wonderful job in bringing to the fore the Jewish sports stars, their stories, the efforts they went to just to compete on equal terms, and the frustrations they suffered. Taylor also details the anti-semitism of the Olympic movement and the naked racism of so many teams, team managers, and governments which prevented Jewish competitors from participating.
But most importantly, Taylor has given us numerous personal portraits of stunningly brave individuals who fought against the incalculable difficulties, just to become Olympians.
