Book Description
Nitrogen is the most limiting element for crop production. Traditionally, expensive commercial fertilizers are used to correct soil nitrogen deficiencies. Indeed, 50% of the increase in rice yields after World War II can be attributed to increased fertilizer nitrogen use. Although an increased rate of fertilizer nitrogen application has been advocated to meet the growing demand for food, it is unrealistic to advise the farmers to apply fertilizers they could hardly afford, and whose prices are likely to escalate in the years ahead. In addition, when they are not applied judiciously there are problems of environmental pollution as plants are capable of taking up only a relatively small portion of the applied nitrogen, a substantial amount being lost through various chemical and biological processes. The exploitation of cheaper alternatives or supplements to fertilizers have therefore gained much interest in recent years.
Our increased interest in biological nitrogen fixation as a supplement or alternative to nitrogen fertilizers led to the convening of a consultants' meeting on `The Role of Isotopes in Studies on Nitrogen Fixation and Nitrogen Cycling by Blue-Green Algae and the
A
zolla-Anabaena azollae Association', in Vienna from 11--15 October 1982. The consultants' group recommended that the Joint FAI/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture embark on a coordinated research programme in this field and that initial emphasis should be placed on
Azolla-Anabaena symbiosis. As a result, such a programme was initiated in 1984, which was concluded in 1989. The results and conclusions reported here are those that were generated during the five years of its operation.

Book Description
New frontiers of science offer exciting opportunities to stretch rice research horizons. Recent advances in understanding symbiotic
Rhizobium-legume interactions at the molecular level, the discovery of endophytic interactions of nitrogen-fixing organisms with non-legumes and the ability to introduce new genes into rice through transformation have created an excellent opportunity to investigate the possibilities for incorporating N
2 fixation capability in rice. During a think-tank workshop organized by IRRI in 1992, the participants reaffirmed that such opportunities do exist for cereals and recommended that rice be used as a model system. Subsequently, IRRI developed a
New Frontier Project to coordinate the worldwide collaborative efforts among research centers committed to reducing dependency of rice on mineral N resources. An international Rice Biological Nitrogen Fixation (BNF) working group was established to review, share research results/materials, and to catalyze research. This volume contains the deliberations made at the second working group meeting, held 13-15 October, 1996 at the National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) in Faisalabad, Pakistan. The papers presented in the meeting deal with the recent findings on different approaches related to the establishment of endophytic association, development of N
2-fixing nodules similar to legumes and transfer of
nif genes to rice.

INTRODUCTION
Nepal forms the very watershed of Asia. Landlocked between India and Tibet, it spans terrain from subtropical jungle to the icy Himalaya, and contains or shares eight of the world's ten highest mountains. Its cultural landscape is every bit as diverse: a dozen major ethnic groups, speaking as many as fifty languages and dialects, coexist in this narrow, jumbled buffer state, while two of the world's great religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, overlap and mingle with older tribal practices.
Yet it's a testimony to Nepali tolerance and good humour that there's no tradition of ethnic or religious strife. Unlike India, Nepal was never colonized, a fact which comes through in fierce national pride and other, more idiosyncratic ways. Founded on trans-Himalayan trade, the dense, medieval cities display unique pagoda-style architecture, not to mention an astounding flair for festivals and pageantry. Above all, though, Nepal is a nation of unaffected villages and terraced countryside - more than eighty percent of the population lives off the land - and whether you're trekking, biking or bouncing around in packed buses, sampling this simple lifestyle is perhaps the greatest pleasure of all.
But it would be misleading to portray Nepal as a fabled Shangri-la. One of the world's poorest countries, it suffers from many of the pangs and uncertainties of the developing world; development is coming in fits and starts, and not all of it is being shared equitably. Heavily reliant on its big-brother neighbours, Nepal was, until 1990, run by one of the last remaining absolute monarchies, a regime that combined China's repressiveness and India's bureaucracy in equal measure. It's now a democracy, but a very precarious one. Political freedom has done little to improve the lot of the average family, while corruption and frequent changes of government have led to widespread disillusion and spawned an intractable Maoist insurgency.
Travel within Nepal isn't straightforward or predictable. Certain tourist areas are highly developed, even overdeveloped, but facilities elsewhere are rudimentary; getting around is time-consuming and often uncomfortable. Nepalis are well used to shrugging off such inconveniences with the all-purpose phrase, Ke garne? (What to do?). Nepal is also a more fragile country than most - culturally as well as environmentally - so it's necessary to be especially sensitive as a traveller.
Customer Reviews:
excellent travelling companion.......2001-06-25
great guidebook. Describes in detail the good, the bad and the ugly of Nepal. The language section was extremely useful. A few hours spent learning some useful greetings and phrases will pay off tenfold upon arrival in Nepal. Being able to bargain or ask for directions in the native language is a lot of fun and much appreciated, especially since most travellers do not take the time to learn anything more than "Namaste."
Wonderfully comprehensive and thorough. Written with heart.......2000-04-29
This book has given me comfort and a wealth of information about what I would like to do and see in Nepal. Having a well planned trip in advance is smart and this book will probably tell you everything you need to know about anything, and more. Food, health issues, places to stay, sights, special points, etc. Definitely worth the investment.
Excellent, Practical Guide.......2000-03-20
I just returned from Nepal using this guide. The book was very well-written with lots of practical advice-- everything from how to book an airline to what kind of diahrrea you may have picked up. Very accurate information re. hotels, modes of transportation, etc. Useful vocabulary list.
Wonderfully useful book for travels in Nepal.......1999-01-09
The best thing about this book is its vast coverage; especially those places off the beaten track. It has a lot of practical information and despite being 2 years old now, it was still fairly accurate. Other travel books attempt to be encyclopedic about Nepal,... documenting everything without prioritizing the places that people actually do visit. David's book goes into a lot of detail about places of interest, both historical and practical info. For example, the book had an excellent section on Chitwan national park. In fact, on our recent trip it saved us from getting a guide. I thoroughly recommend this book. The author even keeps a website to update the readers. Great.
Absolutely Accurate.......1998-01-22
While in Nepal last year I found this book to be exactly what I needed to get around as easily as possible. I usually use Lonely Planet Guides when traveling, but in this case - the Rough Guide is superior. Now if I can only get it back from my friend....

Book Description
The elderly Claudia Hampton, a best-selling author of popular history; lies alone in a London hospital bed. Memories of her life still glow in her fading consciousness, but she imagines writing a history of the world. Instead, Moon Tiger is her own history, the life of a strong, independent woman, with its often contentious relations with family and friends. At its center — forever frozen in time, the still point of her turning world — is the cruelly truncated affair with Tom, a British tank commander whom Claudia knew as a reporter in Egypt during World War II.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific writing justifies the Booker prize........2006-08-01
Claudia looks back on her life as she lies dying in a hospital bed. Hardly an original concept, and in fact this would be an ordinary book, except for the writing, which is terrific. Lively proves equally fine in describing a trip behind British front lines in the North African desert, and a walk in the woods by a mother and her young child. The novel is rather unusual in that while it is almost entirely written in Claudia's voice, it occasionally, and briefly, employs the voice of her daughter and others - very effectively. Claudia is a very successful historian, yet her own daughter's inner life is as obscure to her as the inner lives of the figures she writes about. I enjoyed the romantic aspect of Claudia's tale, the lover who is killed in battle and whom "she mourns for the rest of her life" as one reviewer put it, but I do not believe this is what made the novel worthy of the Booker prize.
My favourite book.......2006-06-25
I love this book - it has wit and intelligence. I also appeals to the romantic in me. A tale of lost love in Cairo in 1941.
Loved the writing style.......2006-03-20
I am beginning to realize that I love books with these strong women characters. The characters themselves may be difficult to love but when added with the whole of the book it makes for wonderful reading. I especially liked the parts where 'Claudia' talks about how she viewed a situation and then someone else involved in that situation describes it. It gave the story a depth that sometimes is not available in a first person narrative.
Brilliant Booker of those lovely ghosts of phantom lovers .......2005-04-24
An exotic novel about a love that haunts us from the grave to our own. Claudia's rendition of her affair in Egypt during a war, resulting in the loss of her great love and their unborn child, is depicted with an Englishwoman's genius of grammar, prose, and Latin-based mastery of the English language. Told through Claudia's story on her death bed between periods of consciousness, Penelope Lively distinguishes herself with the usage of narrative to describe a lifetime of mourning. Claudia mourns Tom throughout her adult and senior years as she lives a journalist's life in London, England. Lively's Claudia is a stubborn woman whose account of things, people, and relationships are rooted in her own view of the world. This is more than a romance, it is a look into the elements and pervasive condition of heartbreak over a lifetime. Tragic, humorous, and compelling. No wonder it was a Booker Prize - the most prestigious literary prize in the world for English language fiction.
Thrilling!.......2004-07-06
This book was my introduction to one of the truly great writers of our day. Penelope Lively has written ten of the best novels of the last twenty years. This is but one. I recommend it highly. When you have finished you should move on to "Passing On" and then "The Photograph."
Book Description
Millipedes and Moon Tigers explores those uneasy places where scientific research meets public policy-making--and the resulting human effect on our natural and historical landscapes. Steve Nash's eye gravitates toward those specific, contemporary stories whose relevance does not diminish with a turn of the calendar's page, for they represent larger, looming issues.
The destruction wrought upon native ecosystems by invasive species such as snakehead fish; the drastic and, in many cases, mysterious reduction in songbird populations in recent decades; the blight of a century ago that wiped out four billion chestnut trees, which once made up a quarter of the Eastern forest... Nash does more than lament the passing of the continent as it once was. He reveals the factors that have led to endangerment and extinction--from environmental policies that are terribly outdated to technologies that are evolving more quickly than our attitudes--and presents possible solutions, in both the political and scientific arenas.
Nash follows an archaeobotanist on her research in the Near East to see what ancient agricultural practices in this now largely arid region can tell us about where the West may be heading. He writes of Civil War battlefields that, in the wake of new development, are being obliterated one by one--and, along with them, a wealth of lost archaeological opportunities. Turning to a more modern battlefield, he writes of "agroterror"--the intentional introduction of plant and animal diseases into agriculture and nature--and suggests what might be done to stop this new threat.
Focusing on the southeastern United States but addressing issues that affect the whole environment, many of the essays explore the intersection of the environment and the most cutting-edge technology. Nash introduces us to the minnow-sized Glofish, America's first genetically engineered pet (the animal's name is actually trademarked). Further advances in our understanding of molecular genetics could even result, some believe, in the cloning of endangered species. All of this is exciting--and problematic. Nash reports on the controversies over genetically modified pines and poplars--"science fiction trees"--and how fears of their escape into wild forests has prompted some environmentalists to go so far as to sabotage corporate laboratories.
The urgency Nash conveys is real: as one of his subjects observes, it is much easier to maintain an ecosystem than repair it. There is no escaping a feeling of apprehension over the destructive dynamics Nash uncovers. Nevertheless, the essays collected here stress the opportunity that is still there for policies to be established that serve humankind by better serving nature.
Customer Reviews:
Environmental Journalism at its Best.......2007-06-14
Steve Nash, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Richmond, may be the best environmental writer at work in Virginia today. In his newly published book, "Millipedes and Moon Tigers: Science and Policy in an Age of Extinction," he explores a complex of issues -- the virtual disappearance of old growth forest in the Mid-Atlantic, the devastation of the chestnut tree, the plague of invasive species, the plummeting songbird population, and the near-extinction of the Peter's Mountain mallow (Virginia's rarest plant) -- of immediate concern to Virginians. As a bonus, he treats readers to fascinating essays on a variety of national issues: the critical role of bugs in the environment, the wolves of Isle Royal, and the promises and perils of genetic engineering, cloning and other technologies.
I would describe Steve, who happens to be a personal friend, as a Jared Diamond-style environmentalist: There is no question where his sympathies lay but he is intellectually honest. He is cognizant of the complexities of the issues and the trade-offs entailed with any solutions -- trade-offs not only between the environment and the human economy, but tradeoffs between different environmental solutions. Steve does not deliver the party line -- he airs a wide variety of perspectives. He does not profess a faith-based environmentalism, grounded in romanticism and sentimenality, but a science-based environmentalism. That's why, although I may not always agree with his conclusions, I always respect his arguments.
A blessing for time-strapped readers who prefer a quick dip into the issues, "Millipedes and Moon Tigers" is short. Its essays are succinct and to the point. Anyone who is passionate about Virginia's environment, or environmental issues generally, should read this book.

Excellent summer reading for my daughter.......2006-06-17
Moon Tiger is everything a children's book should be. It has a captivating, imaginative story with a flair and style that I rarely come across. Ed Young's illustrations are top knotch--absolutely breathtaking, his work truly qualifies as art. There are pictures in here that should be sold as art posters (especially the illustration of the girl and tiger in the jungle.) My daughter loved reading it and because of great books like Moon Tiger, she is already at the end of second grade reading level but hasn't started second grade! Thank you Mrs. Root and Mr. Young, your book is a winner. Soar!

Book Description
Family lore passes from generation to generation in many ways: through written histories, oral traditions, and photographs. For the Shaifer family of Port Gibson, Mississippi, an amazing collection of fifty quilts made by women from four generations holds the story of the family's past.
Seldom has a family collection of quilts of this magnitude been shared. Not only do the quilts cover a significant time span, but they include diverse types, patterns, and techniques.
Threading the Generations: A Mississippi Family's Quilt Legacy tells the story of the Shaifer family, beginning with Abram Keller Shaifer who came down the Natchez Trace in 1813 and settled in Port Gibson. The book skillfully connects the family's history with the quilts from 1813 to the present.
Featuring seventy-five photographs of quilts, family members, and important locations, Threading the Generations includes a discussion of each quilt and the major quilters. Not just a quilt book, however, it is also about family struggles and achievements, relationships, and life as it was lived by thousands of southerners during such difficult times as the Civil War and Reconstruction. Of special interest is the post?Civil War era in the Shaifer family when the son (A. K. Shaifer) established personal connections via letters, gifts, and visits between sworn enemies from the North and South.
Research provides ties between generations of women who not only shared a love of one another but also a love of quilting. The legacy they have left will live on as a testament to their creativity, artistic abilities, and strong sense of family.
Customer Reviews:
Great read.......2006-08-23
A really interesting story of one family's amazing quilt history. Just the fact that these quilts still exist is incredible and they are such great examples of the periods in which they were made.

Generous, balanced information.......2005-10-07
For three centuries people have been taking important medicinal plants from the wild, but this book explores the much better way to meet the demands of a rapidly growing market. Persons and Davis provide state-of-the-art information on growing and selling high-value herbs such as bloodroot and black cohosh as well as the plants named in the title. There are plenty of stories from experienced growers, too, which helps to make this book remarkably enjoyable to read. The authors' emphasis never veers far from guidance that is both practical and profitable. Whether you want to grow woodland medicinals commercially or simply want to enrich your pocket of woods with useful plants, this is a treasure of a book.

Changed my life as a teacher.......2006-04-07
My first year of teaching in South Central Los Angeles I was frustrated, isolated, and thought about quitting constantly.
Then I picked up this book.
It changed the way I viewed my students, curriculum, and my role as an educator.
Now, five years later, I'm studying to become a principal to effect change in some small way, like Marva Collins did.
Looking forward to completing both books...........2006-03-02
I've just received and began reading both of Marva Collin's books, and I'm looking forward to completing them. Something to remember about this specific book in particular is that some of the writings in it are from speeches given, along with her other writings (which I might take as personal journaling, but I could be wrong). In any event, if she says one thing once, it's well worth repeating. I'm glad to have found her and her books.
One of the most inspiring books I have ever read in my life!.......2005-02-24
I would recommend this book to all teachers it is very motivating. Ms. Collin is beacon of light to all who teach!
Heartfelt sentiments in pedantic prose.......2004-06-13
I am a dedicated teacher who loves to read. This book appeals to me as a teacher, but loses me as a reader. The same points are made over and over again in the first section of the book; I found myself increasingly irritated by the editing errors that abound on each page. The same quotations are repeated several times, sometimes in the span of a few pages. It reads like a collection of notes scribbled too fast.
As Ms. Collins might say to one of her students, "Nice try, but why don't we try proofreading this to make it better?"
It touched my soul.......2003-02-10
To anyone that is searching for an answer to our current educational crisis, you have found it! Marva Collins is a woman who has been chosen by GOD to help children learn. She makes no excuses for them, she just teaches them. This book embodies everything I am aspiring to be as an educator. The message in this book is simple. If you love children enough to nurture them as if they were your own, you will help them become life long learners. This book should become a required reading for anyone that is preparing themsleves for the life long journey of learning, and teaching. If the president can see that Marva's Way is great so can everyone else. Buy it! It is a blessing for the educators soul.

Book Description
Johnson, previously a photographer of 'wild men' in the islands of the South Seas, takes his first African safari in the early 1920's. With his wife Osa he journeys through Eastern Africa, photographing and hunting wild animals. Replete with thrilling adventures, near-fatal mishaps, and moments of quiet beauty, this is the story of the beginning of the Johnsons' love affair with Africa. In his graceful, accurate prose, Martin describes the awesome creatures of the savannah, occasionally interjecting a tirade about the poisoning influences of the 'civilization.' A lovely and entertaining book.

A real joy to read for anyone........2003-05-24
You need not be from Iowa, be a farmer, railroad person, or have grown up during the depression to be truly entertained by this book. A story of a ordinary family that tells the truth, that no family is truly ordinary. We all share joy, grief, hardship, and love and live extrodinary aspects of our ordinary lives. Patrick tells his family's story with a manner true to his family's style. Plain but elegent, reserved but openly humerous, and with a depth that is easily felt but not described. I enjoyed it very much and hope you will as well.
Thanks
Not All Happy Familes Are Alike.......2002-11-28
Once Americans were connected by kin and neighborliness into communities linked by the railroad. Patrick Irelan's parents set up housekeeping in this America during the depths of the Great Depression, farming one depleted acreage after another. His father was a whiz telegrapher and soon both parents were working as station agents for the Burlington Railroad, happiest, his mother recalled, while living in a Nebraska depot.
Irelan captures the ritual and spectacle of railroading. In Allerton, Iowa, we wait for the train: preparation, anticipation, arrival--in seconds only the tracks and town remain. In Chicago, however, the train waits for us.
Central Standard is the story (twenty five, in fact) of a family typical, yet so unique as to be unknowable without a guide. Fortunately, the family has provided one.
The Best of a Century.......2002-11-20
Inspired by the intricate and diligent work of a railroad man and farmer, Pete Irelan and his family, Central Standard tops the list of the best. The harshest era of our Midwest is set with joy, sadness, and the hard work of a determined and loving family. Throughout the book, Irelan emerges the reader into a world of good humor, grieving, and hope. And in the end, we reenter the 21st century with a sense of nostalgia and an understanding of what the meaning of "family" truly is. There are no gross horrors in this book, nor stories of dysfunctional people in order to keep the reader's interest. With Irelan's sense of story telling and his poetic way with words, telling a story is all we need to relive his time and place.
Wonderful stories.......2002-11-18
This is a book about growing up in depression-era and post-depression small town Iowa - stories about working for the
railroad, trying to eke out a living by farming, and the reality
of hard work and family life. Irelan evokes a time when family was important and makes everyday characters come to life in this
collection of essays about his parents and relatives as he grows up in southern Iowa.
