Customer Reviews:
A nice introduction to Alaska's berry bounty!.......2006-09-12
The Alaska Wild Berry Guide and Cookbook is an excellent source for someone interested in making use of the many delicious wild berries that dot the Alaskan landscape. With almost 50 kinds of berries growing wild here on the Last Frontier, you're sure to be close to one or more that will work for jam, jelly or some delectable baked goods. The book's color photos are particularly helpful. My only real complaint with this book is that I'd almost prefer to have a smaller "pocket-sized" guide (sans recipes) for times when I'm out in the woods gathering berries. This would be particularly helpful for those hikes when you're bringing along a visitor or someone knew to Alaska. I'm looking for a specific kind of berry, but they often want to know the names of several varieties and it always seems to be the very ones that have long-since gone from my mind! Despite this small complaint, I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to anyone wishing for more information on berries in the Greatland!

Book Description
You are shown William's personal technique for picking stocks based on identifying what stocks are under professional buying or selling. In addition, you'll learn how to successfully forecast the market's short, intermediate and long term trend; and be shown how to combine stock selection with market timing to improve your results.
Customer Reviews:
A good primer, but dated.......2006-05-13
If you're new to trading or technical analysis, this is a good primer. Much of the information in this book is based on a concept that I had discovered shortly before acquiring this book, that all the technical indicators in the world are so much smoke and mirrors if they don't factor volume into the equation.
This book was written in an era before home computers and many of the tools we have at our fingertips today. It was also written in an era before the "average" guy could directly control his portfolio in real time. For this reason, a lot of the signals he teaches as buy/sell indicators have been drowned out by increased volume and noise. The computer age has made the market more efficient and faster to react, which has dated his signals on a macro level. Nevertheless, the underlying concepts are sound.
Outdated.......2003-09-05
The only valid concept here is buying a stock acting better than the market, a divergence. It's coupled with using divergences in his accumulation/distribution indicator, which acts similar to On Balance Volume and other volume based indicators. The market timing indicators are all outdated or useless because of changes in the market. For example using the yield of the market (because of tax laws yields will remain low) and mutual fund cash levels (most funds are required to be fully invested with minimal amounts set aside for redemptions). This is not to knock Larry, he is very knowlegeable and you'd be better off with his more recent books. BTW, these concepts were not mentioned in his most recent book "The Right Stock at the Right Time" so I'd suspect he doesn't use them anymore.
Highly Recommended.......2002-03-03
I highly recommend this book. I have read over 300 books on stocks and have been trading for the past 7 years (successfully). I only read books written by people who are actually highly successful people, not academic types. Larry Williams stands even higher than Jesse Livermore as he has made and has been able to keep his money. Don't expect magic from this book; however, the methods work extremely well if you put in the effort. Even though the original edition of the book was published in the early seventies, the methods work equally well today. I am saying this from a practical viewpoint. Larry says that your stop order should not be more than 5% from your purchase price. When I first read this book, I though it was almost impossible to achieve this narrow number. However, after a lot of hard work and practice, most of my stops are less than or equal to 6% from the purchase price.
Update 6-17/2003
To give you a feeling of the power of his methods, I picked NTES at $6 and SOHU at $4 back in early November 2002. NTES closed yesterday at $36.14 and SOHU at $34.97!
To use Larry's methods effectively, I combined his methods in this book with 'How to Make Money in Stocks' by William O'Neil. If you look at the fundamentals of both NTES and SOHU right when they took off in November, they match O'Neil's CANSLIM criteria. If you look at Larry Williams technical criteria for picking stocks, again both of these stocks shine.
After having tried almost all the methods and having read all the great books out there, if you only read, combine, and use the methods in the above two books, you are guaranteed to be successfull. One other great book that should be in your arsenel is 'Trading for a Living' by Dr. Alexander Elder. The above two books teach you on how to pick winning stocks but they don't tell you anything about money management and how to manage your emotions. 'Trading for a Living' shines in this area. However, the section on how to pick stocks and trade are pretty poor.
My experience has been that if you use the above three books, your average return should be between 75% to 150% consistently year after year. This is based on practical experience and not some pipe dreams. A lot of the professionals make this kind of return year after year. However, once you make a certain amount of money, then it gets harder to make these kinds of returns as then you have enough money to start moving the market itself by your trades. Anyhow, at that stage, you don't need these high returns anyway as you have achieved your basic goals.
I am amazed that the books that are highly valuable are not the best selling. I guess that proves the point that the public is always wrong; it is always the 5% of the population that makes the most money.

Self-Organizing Maps
ASIN: 3540762663 |
Book Description
Self-organizing maps (SOM) have proven to be of significant economic value in the areas of finance, economic and marketing applications. As a result, this area is rapidly becoming a non-academic technology. This book looks at near state-of-the-art SOM applications in the above areas, and is a multi-authored volume, edited by Guido Deboeck, a leading exponent in the use of computational methods in financial and economic forecasting, and by the originator of SOM, Teuvo Kohonen. The book contains chapters on applications of unsupervised neural networks using Kohonen's self-organizing map approach.
Customer Reviews:
Essential SOM.......2006-10-03
A classic for those who want rigorous mathematics applied to useful quantitative decisions. Despite being a collection of different chapters by different authors, do not worry. All of them, coordinated by Deboeck, make this book a "must" for those who, like me, are involved in the hard task of selecting Stocks, Bonds or Funds for the asset allocation process.
This is not the only book you should have in your shelves to know about this discipline. But it is the only one who will clearly show you the wide different applications of SOM in Financial Markets. Eminently practical (yes, it is true!), this is the perfect companion of the famous Kohonen's book.
Last, but not least, lots of examples very well documented and concisely explained. These can be easily implemented through the commercial software Mr Deboeck uses as tools.
Fascinating but the price isn't right..........2001-03-22
SOM are a kind of neural networks that are totally different from the feedforward multi-layered networks that everybody has heard about. The ideas behind SOM are remarkable intellectual stuff, first intellectual class stuff, and would certainly deserve to be more widely known. I found myself wondering how comes I rarely heard of Prof. Kohonen, and when is he going to win the Nobel prize... Prof. Kohonen and the development of SOM would make a good subject for the James Gleicks out there.
This book is in fact a collection of short articles about how SOM can be applied to financial visualisation and classification problems. Compilations of articles are a awkward genre, ranging from either the totally unitelligible or the totally trivial, and if you have graduate education in finance, you will find that most of the articles are pretty lame, if not downright amateurish, compared to standard academic finance literature; if you don't have grad education, I'm not sure whether you would want to buy this book in the first place, but there's nothing particularly hard about it. Art buffs may be attracted by the richly colored SOM maps (Vasarely-like) that come inside the book, and I could imagine somebody exposing these in an art gallery...
Anyway, after going through this book, one gets a decent idea of what can be done with SOM, so I would definitely say IT IS worth reading. I have to say I found it utterly fascinating, although I was disappointed with most of the articles.
Another thing I don't like about the book is the price (I mean, OUCH!)... The other thing is the fact that even after reading the theory article by Professor Kohonen in this book, I still couldn't understand intuitively how the basic SOM convergence algorithm worked. It is only after reading the first few pages of his masterpiece "Self-Organizing Maps", published at Springer in 1992 that I had the "haha!" experience and that I decided to put Professor Kohonen on the pedestal of my personal heroes of science...

Book Description
How to turn a photograph of a loved one, pet, or movie star into a strikingly accurate portrait in wood is detailed in this woodcutting workbook. Guiding readers through converting an image via computer into a woodcutting pattern, this book provides strategies for creating a wood portrait that maintains the essential attributes of the original subject. Tips are provided for investing in computer software, finishing and framing a portrait, and cutting a piece without weakening the wood. This second edition charts current advances in software and provides fascinating patterns of many famous faces for readers who do not wish to design their own.
Customer Reviews:
Not much Help........2007-05-30
If you want to turn your photographs into patterns you might look else where. There are no instructions telling you how to use software. You are told to get a software product that will let you work with pictures. In one photo you are shown a dog with one ear being dark. You are told to copy the ear from the other side onto the dark ear. You are not told how to do it---just do it.
Ther are many patterns already made. If you are looking for premade patterns then you may enjoy this book.
A new scroll saw concept.......2007-03-19
I gave this product as a gift to a relative who is very good with scroll saw tecniques. He was unaware of this book. It gave him a new perspective particularly in creating his own designs. Thanks.
Excellent - Informative & Useful, Value-Packed.......2002-10-24
The author compressed his vast knowledge and experience into simple tips and instructions. I was able to immediately make several excellent scrollsaw patterns. Plus, the patterns he provided add tremendously to the value...and his patterns are highest quality. One of the best craft books I've come across.
Very Informant.......2002-01-28
I Loved the Book Scrollsaw Portraits! I just started scroll sawing & I can do the portraits. I think Gary is very talented & should make another book! A must for any scroll sawer!
fellow scroll sawyer, 15 years experience.......2002-01-13
If you are looking for something different and challenging to do on your scroll saw I would suggest this book.It has a nice gallery section showing the authors work and some great patterns.Just a couple of the patterns are worth the book alone and there is 55 of them.Rather than just a pattern book this also gives you the basic fundamental skills to choose good pictures and create a pattern from them. The information is fundamental and it will carry over to most graphic software titles out there.I for one thank the author for sharing this unique and exciting way of scroll sawing with all of us.His website also has tips and patterns but the book offers more information for the scroller.I hope this is one pattern maker that sticks around because I love his work.

For the Confident Sewer.......2007-06-16
I purchased Veiled in Beauty to go on my shelf of resource materials, you know the shelf you go to when the coffee hasn't kicked in at 7 in the morning?! I must admit I am very thankful that I have millinery experience as you are not shown how to make the foundation pieces such as juliet caps, crescents, wired frames and so forth. You are shown how to cover these pieces though, utilising a number of methods such as crinolin(horse hair is crinolin out here - don't trust my spelling of it), covering a buckram frame (book suggests underlining fabric with flannel, a item not easily come by in Australia any more- try pellon, a fine wadding used under quilt tops to enhance embroidery etc).
Veiled in Beauty contains some beautifully taken photographs. It also features a number of illustrations that clearly demonstrate numerous styles of veils. If you are patient, you can match some of the suggested styles and trims to the photos. You are shown how to make veils, such as single tiered veils, two-tiered veils, veils with a pouf, bouffant veils and so forth. Also features instructions for mantillas. Lace applications are demonstrated as well as edging techniques. You are shown how to make continuous bias.
Something that may be interest - you are shown how to make your veil removable from your head piece. That way you can get extra value out of your cocktail base by wearing it at your reception or even to other events after your big day. You're also shown how to make barrette bows- this might be a great idea for your flower girls? Don't forget the wreathes, made from fresh flowers either.
To succesfully use this book I would suggest that you must have a fair amount of patients and an ability to follow the written word. The instructions are clear, but it does no good if you are like me and just want to get right into it.
Like every resource, DIY, style guide book, etc- what you can do with what they sohw you is limited only by you. Let your imagination take over and make sure you purchase some surplus nylon illusion to experiment on before committing to your final piece. Veiled in Beauty is a lovely book that I wouldn't hesitate reccommending to someone who has a little bit of time on their hands. Don't buy this if you expect to be able to produce your bridal head wear in a day and are relatively new to sewing. It might end up more pricey then paying someone to make your veil in the first place.
This book is a 3 and a half star for me - like another reviewer wrote, it just lacks something that I can not put my finger on. When I do, I'll come back and edit this review.
It is Okay.......2007-04-16
I bought this book after reading the other reviews. I thought that this one would be better than 'I Do Veils So Can You.' This book has better pictures and some ideas that the other did not, but not terribly much. I do think that those extra ideas were worth buying the book for. It has more infomation on making a wire frame and decorating the headpiece. I did have a hard time understanding some of the directions for making different types of veils. I am still searching for a book with better information on making veils.
A comprehensive guide to veils and headpieces.......2006-07-13
I ordered this book at the same time as "I Do Veils and so Can You," and this book puts that one to shame. This book does a great job of demonstrating how to cut the different shapes of veils from tulle, easy to follow instructions for various headpiece construction techniques, and a wide variety of options for embellishments and finishing. There are lots of options presented in terms of fabrics and materials, and the book suggests actual things you can buy at your local fabric store. Don't waste your money on the other outdated books out there when you can learn everything you need from this one!
Book Description
"This book may very well prove to be a seminal study for more than the history of architecture, but in that area it is definitely new, fresh, and delightful." -- Tom Peters, author of Building the Nineteenth Century
This revelatory study of Le Corbusier's oeuvre is the most unexpected and vital Le Corbusier scholarship to appear in years. Adolf Max Vogt looks to the early, formative years of the architect's life as a key to understanding his mature practice and to solving such fundamental riddles as, "Where did his design vocabulary come from?" and "How was his aesthetic sense formed?" Like an archaeologist of the avant-garde, Vogt uncovers those aspects of the physical and educational environment that made an indelible impression on a receptive kindergarten boy in a remote Swiss village--and had a profound impact on the future architect's imagination and development.
Vogt's investigation of LC's early life and education not only reveals important, previously unacknowledged influences on specific projects such as the Villa Roche and the Villa Savoye, but also offers explanations as to why LC throughout his career preferred to lift buildings above the ground, to give them the appearance of "floating." This tendency had decisive consequences for buildings associated with the modern movement (whose identity as a monolithic stylistic norm Vogt questions) and continues to influence architecture today. By uncovering crucial dimensions of LCs early life and resurrecting primary documents and source materials overlooked by other scholars, this book changes the face of LC studies.
Customer Reviews:
LeCorbusier An Indepth Look into the man .......2005-07-18
This book explores the mind and the method behind LeCorbusier's theory and style. Towards a New Architecture doesn't even capture this. I recommend this book in accordance with the afore mentioned Towards a New Architecture. It is a beautifully captured look at the man his everworking mind in the world of architecture. For those interested in the syle, the man, and the history of architecture. -R
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, aka Le Corbusier, is a towering figure of modern architecture. He was also notoriously self-invented?from his self-aggrandizing nom d'architecte to his flagrant dissembling in his copious writings and sketchbooks about the origins of his ideas. Vogt, in this closely argued but readable book, takes as his task the reconstruction of the local and particular origins of the forms that Le Corbusier universalized. The nexus of his argument is the discoveries, beginning around 1850, of the remains of a prehistoric lake-dwelling culture in the Swiss Jura region, where Jeanneret grew up. Vogt shows how this historical awareness, awakened in Jeanneret as a child by its inclusion in the curriculum of the day, led to Le Corbusier's famous piloti, the reinforced-concrete columns he used to make his buildings seem to float above the ground. The author skillfully employs his subject's own argumentative technique of seamlessly blending word and picture?without resorting to the architect's trademark combination of soaring rhetoric and flimflam. Although Vogt's analysis of Le Corbusier's drawings and buildings (in particular, the unbuilt project for the League of Nations on Lake Geneva) is convincing and even moving, readers are left to ask themselves whether the architect, in suppressing public knowledge of his influences, doesn't demonstrate more wisdom toward them than Vogt has been in uncovering them. The author's "attempt to undercut the cult of genius" confronts the truth of Le Corbusier's genius itself: the artist's forceful reimagination of his antecedents?however obscure, provincial and contingent by themselves?makes the forms that result seem necessary, correct and inevitable. 265 illustrations.
