good general overview.......2001-04-17
This book provides a lot of good general information without going into too much detail. It is a fast read and well-organized. The Michelin books provide greater detail but sometimes more is not always better. I used it to select places I wanted to go and then researched them in other books to confirm my choices. It is a good starting point in planning a great trip.

Customer Reviews:
A good reference, but not a tutorial.......2006-01-20
This book is tricky. It gives you a decent overview of some of the best stock investors, who they are and what they've done. It also gives you some quotes and some ideas they've been using and it's easy to get convinced it tells you how they were picking their investments. But it's not that simple.. There are a few reasons to be carefull.
1. Sometimes the information is based on second hand interpretation (like Buffet never really explained his approach)
2. Even when you read the original works quoted in the book, they are usually full of exceptions and warnings, so the book tends to oversimplify things and pull them out of context.
3. If those great investors could fully explain their winning strategy, everyone would probably be following that method and enjoying similar results. But since we don't see followers of some particular approach dominating the market, probably some personal outstanding characteristics and maybe luck are playing some role and this is not something you can pass through a book.
So treat this book as a catalog of a few prominent investors featuring some highlights of their techniques. But if you lime any of them, don't rely just on the breif description in the book. You should do you own research and make sure you've got enough information to make your own decision.
Overall, this is a well written book with enough useful information to make it worth reading.
The Market Gurus.......2004-12-07
I personal think John Reese and Todd Glassman have done a incredible work on this wonderful book-The Market Gurus: Stock Investing Strategies You Can Use From Wall Street's Best. I am a senior student who is taking Economics class now. And this great book makes me feel so interesting on the stock. Also it makes me wonder how smart those nine famous and outstanding stock market investors are. And how these two fantastic authors are for writing this book which make me to understand more on the business.
The Market Gurus.......2004-12-01
The Market Gurus easily breaks down investment strategies for the new or begining investors, but has very useful information that can be used by veteran investors. This book is easy to understand for the rookie investor. The authors achieved their goal very successfully. By showing the investors of the past, it made the different strategies much clearer than it would have been to just explain them. I enjoyed this book and definetly recommend it to anyone in need of strategical advise in the stock market.
A Great Book For The New Kid On Stock Investing.......2004-04-01
A great book on learning about the stock market. Talks about many different types of strategies that any new upcoming investor could use. It let's you find out what kind of investor you will be by seeing what strategy fits you best. I myself like the O'Neil strategy. I would recommend this book to any who are curious about the stock market and investing in it.
Great Beginner's book.......2003-08-31
The Market Gurus by John Reese and Todd Glassman is one of the first investment books I've ever read. The book is fairly easy to read and doesn't require too much prior knowledge. Each section starts with an introduction of the guru, his achievements, and a summary of his investment strategy. The strategy is then applied step by step to two companies. What I particularly like is that plenty of links to various websites as well as recommendations for other investment journals/books can be found scattered throughout the book.
The problem, however, is that some gurus share similar views and it can get rather redundant. But overall it is well worth a look, even if you don't finish reading everything.

Book Description
Financial Accounting and Reporting courses today need to recognize both the diversity of national traditions and the trend towards accounting harmonization. The profile of students in Financial Accounting courses in European and international business programs is changing. Student bodies are now real melting pots of cultures. English has become the lingua franca of business for most MBA and many undergraduate students. More and more business programs are taught in part or completely in International English. Students today need to be trained to appreciate, understand and analyze a variety of Accounting and Reporting problems from a theoretical and pragmatic point of view, rather than just memorize the local regulatory solution prescribed in one given country or context. Corporate Financial Reporting: A Global Perspective provides an introduction to financial accounting for today's international business student. It provides a user perspective. Financial Accounting and Reporting is a universal knowledge base required from all students intending to become economic actors. Whether they will use accounting and financial information as internal managers or executives, or as external users (investors, credit analysts, etc.) they will need to interpret accounting data. Rather than providing a regulatory solution to a reporting or measurement issue, Corporate Financial Reporting examines the economic logic of the problem and identifies generic possible solutions and shows the impact each might have on a company's or decision maker's decisions. Rather than adopting a `national' approach to accounting issues, Corporate Financial Reporting offers an international perspective, guiding students through IAS, US GAAP and different local standards where they provide an interesting and relevant lesson.
Customer Reviews:
clearest book on financial accounting in the market.......2003-02-17
This book is ideal for managers of internationally oriented businesses who want to get a grip of the financial accounting statements produced by accountants and auditors.
The positive message that the authors send out is that accounting is not that difficult. This book is clear in its structure and language. The reader is gently taken by the hand and shown how to dissect any financial report, whatever its underlying accounting methods.
Readers have to be aware that because of its international perspective, the prime focus is on analysis and not on writing a financial statement.

Book Description
Financial Accounting and Reporting, the re-titled second edition of Corporate Financial Reporting, has become respected and widely used over the four years since it first appeared. This updated and redesigned edition is an introduction to financial accounting for business students who need a user rather than preparer perspective in accounting. Even more so now than when the book was first published, students of financial accounting in international universities or business schools should be taught to appreciate, understand and analyze a variety of accounting and reporting issues from a global theoretical and generic point of view, rather than just be provided only the answer prescribed in their country of study. This book provides that modern global perspective. Financial Accounting and Reporting has four key strengths. It takes a user perspective throughout, whether discussing reporting principles or in the practice of financial analysis; it both offers a non-prescriptive a-national approach and allows an understanding of comparative differences in practices; it is highly international and reflects the trend towards harmonized international reporting.

Excellent purchse for Kaffe Fassett fans.......2007-07-16
If you like Kaffe Fassett fabrics and quilts you will want to add this to your collection. There are some very unique quilts and ideas in it.
Caravan crazy.......2005-08-06
In my experience in using this book, I have never been unhappy with anything that I have quilted. But the this book takes the cake in being disgraceful. I'm talking about the big bang quilt on page 49. None of the directions are checked. The list of what you have to buy to make one of these is wrong and the author has you cutting pieces that you don't need or use in the quilt. I have never been so involved in a quilt before but now that I know that one set of direction is faulty. I should have known. Buyer beware. Quilter beware. I'm usually a great fan of Fasserr's fabric and patterns but this time I'm very disappointed in him.
Caravan of Quilts.......2005-08-03
Although I love all of Kaffe Fassett's books, I think this one is my favorite, although it is hard to choose because they all have different quilts. It has beautiful photographs of the quilts and other projects and the inspirations for them with easy to follow instructions and patterns.
Book Description
With its mesmerizing colors and exotic designs, Quilt Inspirations from Africa takes quilters into an incredibly rich well of ideas and techniques. Rarely seen, startlingly colorful photographs of design motifs in totem poles, carnival masks, murals, and more awaken the spirit of Africa. Sixteen complete, illustrated patterns invite quilters to create their own Africa-inspired quilts.
Customer Reviews:
Georgous photos.......2004-01-15
This is a great looking book. Even though the authors are not of immediate African heritage, they have successfully caputred the flavor of African quilting and provided many great photos. The entire book is a joy to own and great to work with. I have used it successfully to make my own interpretations of African designs. I felt it was worth every penny.
Ambivalent..........2002-12-12
As an African American quilter, I had mixed feelings about this book. While I felt that the quilt projects were beautiful and the book itself interesting, I felt a little cheated when I realized that the authors were not of African heritage themselves. I know that shouldn't make a difference, that Africa was their inspiration and inspiration is neither inclusive nor exclusive, but I was still disappointed. There is a rich African and African American quilting tradition out there. Please look to those books for inspiration as well.
Mary Elizabeth Johnson has given me Africa and the world!!!.......2002-10-15
Quilt Inspirations from Africa is a fitting tribute to the beautiful tradition of designing and creating the complex yet simple quilt designs of Africa.
The book itself is an incredible design. It warms your hands and delights your eyes as you behold the colors of African sand, sky and clay in the colors used on the cover. The graphics are clear and rich and provide a wonderful level of detail of the designs that are covered.
The use of diagrams and symbols was well executed and I was especially pleased to learn the meaning of the listed Adinkra symbols and their story. They reminded me of the symbols in the book 1000 Symbols ý What shapes mean in art and myth ý written by Rowena and Rupert Shepard.
As Mary has done so ably in past books, she takes us into the lives and communal folkways of the quilters, whose work she is representing to the world. And she goes one important step further ý she gives us the tools and instructions needed to help perpetuate and preserve these traditions by teaching us how to design, layout and stitch them for ourselves.
Great job on an incredible book.

A Terrific Source of Inspiration.......2002-05-28
This book provides excellent examples of how to adapt images and ideas from other cultures to contemporary, Western objects. The reasarch is highly credible and the applications inspired and easy to follow. It is a must have for anyone who quilts or who is interested in adapting motifs form other cultures and eras to any art form, including beading and other forms of embroidery.
I ahve mixed feelings about this book.......2000-12-01
I like the visual impact of the book - it is well designed and the quilts are vibrant and striking. The pattern instructions are easy to follow. But, I felt cheated when I realized that almost all the fabrics used are from England's own line of fabrics. I wish that had been clearly spelled out from the beginning - as it is in Kaffe Fassett's quilting books. Finally, England and Johnson choose to open the main text with a quote by a traveller to Africa that includes the phrase that I found particularly offensive.

Book Description
A biochemist and an agronomist present the known facts - for the first time in one volume - about guar, an Old World legume. Guar is now grown in large quantities to produce guar gum, an important industrial water-soluble hydrocolloid. Guar seed has a high content of vegetable protein, and with genetic improvement, it could provide a valuable source of protein in the human diet. The guar plant has been cultivated in India and Pakistan for generations, and guar gum has been used in manufacturing in the United States and abroad since World War 11. Although some investigation has been made into the potential of guar seed as a valuable source of protein for the human diet, more research is required to make use of guar seed economically feasible.
Book Description
Becoming a Family helps adoptive parents recognize and respond to the signs of broken attachment. This practical guide offers clear and effective strategies for parents to help their children overcome their uncertain past and embrace the love of their new parents.
Customer Reviews:
Good Intro to attachment - Light read.......2006-07-21
I found this book extremely helpful in giving a succinct overview of the attachment process when adopting. It is a must read for all parents thinking about or planning to adopt. However, it should lead to reading other more in-depth books for those who decide to adopt for sure.
Great For Parents of young adotped children.......2005-08-30
This is a beautifully written book especially useful for parents of younger adopted children. It is one of the very few books that is also very relevant for those who have adopted internationally. I almost always recommend this book to families that have a younger adopted child. It is well written by a sensitive, creative, and clearly very knowledgeable therapist.
Great information on attachment in adoption.......2005-06-23
I don't entirely agree with the other reviewer who said that this book is too scary. It *could* be scary, but the author bends over backwards to preface everything by telling you *not* to be scared off & that extreme cases are relatively few. I certainly did not get the impression that he believe that intervention is necessary for attachment. He does a great job of provides tools to assist in healthy attachment from day 1, as well as helping to discover if there are issues to be aware of later on. I am normally one to shy away from "scary" topics, but this book made me feel well-equipped - not scared. Note: I am now editing my review after having read section 3 of the book (the final section). That did get scarier... but this book still provided a lot of insight & helpful advice for promoting attachment.
Good, but deserves a warning before reading!.......2005-05-30
Warning... this book could instill a LOT of fear! Granted, it is an excellent book in describing a healthy attachment and how to achieve this with your adopted child; only that is NOT the book's primary purpose. The author wants to illustrate what is not healthy, and how often these "unhealthy" attachments occur, specifically in international adoptions. The author write this book firmly in the belief that no matter how much love you shower upon your adopted child/children they will always lack the ability to bond unless intervention is taken.
So, if you choose to read this book, it is best to read as a "heads-up." Because, even though this book appears more "doom and gloom," there really are a lot of great suggestions to help build this much needed bond with your adopted (even bio) child/children, and the author also suggests the best types of therapies for these children with RAD (reactive attachment disorder) as they will not respond to "normal" therapies.
Unfortunately, the negative seems to so overpower the positive that if you aren't careful, you may be left re-thinking your adoption all together.

Pre-Raphaelite Splendor.......2000-07-18
As I only had about 30 minutes to view this exhibit at the Met (I know - it's absurd), I am delighted to have this beautiful catalog to examine in close detail. The reproductions are indeed stunning, and the text, although very detailed, is quite readable. A treasure for art lovers, especially fans of the Pre-Raphaelite style.
Here's a sumptuous feast of color and fantasy.......1998-11-26
This is a real eye opener of a book if you are looking for an in depth retrospective of the artist's body of work! Burne-Jones is at last receiving his fair due of recognition as witnessed by the recent Met show in the Summer of 1998. This book showcases his many merits, including a unerring color and design technique applied to fantastical subjects. What makes the book so irresistible is the wealth of color plates accompanied by detailed explanations. It also helps that the authors were thoughtful enough to leave out any stuffy, academic narrative that overburdens this genre.
What a great Book!!.......1998-09-23
This edition of the catalogue for the Metropolitain Museum of Art's recent(and sadly closed) exhibit belongs on every art library's list of " must buys." What a wealth of information and imagery, all presented in generous counterbalance in splendid color throughout. Buy this!!
A magnificent book for a magnificent exhibition.......1998-08-04
To visit the Burne-Jones exhibition at New York's Metropolitain Museum of Art is a thrill beyond describing. It is like being surrounded by old friends of the sort usually found in dreams. The stunning, fully illustrated catalogue that accompanies the show is perhaps the best catalogue I have seen, most notably for its impeccable and stimulating essays, and for its phenominal wealth of color reproductions. This book is a stunner, despite two or three flipped pictures( which I guess could happen to anyone in the rush to get such an involved publication ready in time!) I would advise all bookshops, libraries and Burne-Jones lovers to order this book now for its September release. It is sure to be the most valuable book on its subject for many years to come.

Book Description
William Morris is one of the most admired figures of the Victorian era. Studies of his Art and his life fill the shelves of libraries. Yet, for all this accessibility, an air of uncertainty has always clouded his image. Since Morris's death, biographers and scholars have portrayed the artist as a victim, bound to an adulterous wife. In Art and Forbidden Fruit, John Le Bourgeois lifts the veil of appearances, and shows the truth about Morris's life. In a close analysis of Morris's poetry and biography, the Author asserts the early existence of an emotional attachment between William Morris and his sister Emma, and how she became the principal source of his inspiration. Le Bourgeois follows the paths of Morris the artist and Morris the man, and points out the links between the poet's love for his sister and his evolution as an artist.

Medieval Eyes.......2001-06-29
In death, SIR EDWARD BURNE-JONES became the first artist to have funeral services at Westminster Abbey. In life, he put his Oxford University studies in medieval legend and literature to work in Graham piano decorations, King Arthur theatre sets for the Lyceum, and Theatre of London book illustrations. His first decorative work was a Chaucerean design, and his collaboration with William Morris on the Kelmscott Press Illustrated Chaucer was impressive. "Astrologia" shared his favorite sphere motif with "Days of Creation," "Hope," and such portraits as the "Baronne Deslandes." "Golden Stairs" included his recipe for painting success: musical instruments. "Laus Veneris" had the finest of his tapestry-like surface patterns. "Pan and Psyche" was set in one of his typical landscapes: mysteriously dreamlike, with legendary incidents. "Star of Bethlehem" was a watercolor of his "Adoration of the Magi" tapestry: his original stained glass and tapestry designs tended to show up later in paintings. "Temperantia" pioneered his hallmark elaborately folded and wrinkled draperies. But his art also found lighter moments in caricatures and comic sketches, such as his illustrated "Letters to Kate," daughter of lawyer friend George Lewis. Russell Ash's beautifully illustrated, well-written book makes good 19th-century reading with Timothy Hilton's THE PRE-RAPHAELITES, Lionel Lambourne's VICTORIAN PAINTING, Julian Treuherz's VICTORIAN PAINTING, and Malcolm Warner's THE VICTORIANS.

"Drive[s] a four-horse chariot through the nineteenth century....I have enjoyed this book more than I can say."John Julius Norwich
The Macdonald sistersAlice, Georgiana, Agnes and Louisa-started life in the teeming ranks of the lower-middle classes, denied the advantages of education and the expectation of social advancement. Yet as wives and mothers they would connect a famous painter, a president of the Royal Academy, a prime minister, and the uncrowned poet laureate of the Empire. Georgiana and Agnes married, respectively, the pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones and the arts administrator Edward Poynter; Louisa gave birth to future prime minister Stanley Baldwin, and Alice was mother to Rudyard Kipling. A Circle of Sisters brings to life four women living at a privileged moment in history. Their progress from obscurity to imperial grandeur indicates the vitality of 19th-century Britain: a society abundant with possibility. From their homes in India and England, the sisters formed a network that, through the triumphs and tragedies of their families and the Empire, uniquely endured. 16 pages of illustrations.

A good book for a somewhat specialized audience.......2006-05-11
This isn't something that I would recommend to every reader. The title sounds a lot more warm and fuzzy than the sisters were. If you are expecting a heart-warming tale of the days when all families were close and unfailingly took care of one another, this isn't it. One recommendation I would make is to look up the Rudyard Kipling, Stanley Baldwin, Edward Burne-Jones and Edward Poynter in an encyclopedia, the Dictionary of National Biography or on the internet if they are not familiar. I say this not by way of faulting the book, there are too many characters to give each a full treatment, but it helps to have some idea of who these people were.
The book focuses on the daughters of a Methodist minister. Four either married men who became famous or had sons who became famous. Unfortunately, these are generally not terribly charming personalities, so it is no great delight getting to know them unless one is interested in the period or these particular people. But for those with a special interest, I think it will probably be quite interesting. There were also two brothers, one who was rather unsuccessful and one who was quite successful as a Methodist clergyman, but they take a back seat to their sisters both in the book and in the sisters' lives.
The one thing that I would have liked to have seen developed better is successful relations within the extended family. Georgiana Burne-Jones was very close to her nephew Rudyard, but I'm not really certain why. This may be a problem with a lack of sources on this particular point - Flanders can infer from guest books which relatives saw little of each other but more positive information would be necessary for this.
The MacDonald sisters: Alice, Georgiana, Agnes, Louisa and Edith, came from a modest, barely middle-class background. It is quite interesting that three of them married men from equally undistinguished roots, one a man who was perhaps upper middle-class. Despite these seemingly unpromising beginnings, two of the initally undistinguished husbands, Edward Burne-Jones and Edward Poynter (married to Georgiana and Agnes, respectively) became very successful and famous in the field of art. The third husband, Lockwood Kipling, married to Alice, was successful in his field, and their son, Rudyard, would become an international literary success and quite wealthy. The fourth, husband, Alfred Baldwin, married to Louisa, was a model as an industrialist, noted for public service, who went into politics. Their son, Stanley Baldwin, was three time Prime Minister. Many of the less famous members of the family pursued successful careers as writiers, sometimes quite well known in their time. A few were failures as life: either suffering psychological problems, perhaps due to a frustration of their creative potential, or too comfortable as the children of the famous. Judith Flanders attempts to discover how nurture, i.e., being related to the MacDonalds, may have lead to the surprising achievements. I don't think that she really succeeds, not that I believe that we necessarily can ferret out these influences, but she does draw a probing picture of an interesting family. She considers not only the facts, but draws reasonable inferences about the human beings they refer to. She is quite clear about when she is speculating.
Flanders has done an enormous amount of research. There are many notes, a 12-page "Select Bibliography" and an index. There are eight pages of plates, with 45-50 well-selected pictures of the extended family. I particularly want to commend how the notes and index were done. The notes have both the chapter number and chapter running title, making it much easier to match them with the notes in the text. The index has brief explanatory notes in parentheses after the names of less important characters, e.g. (niece of so-and-so), which is often all that is needed, as well as cross-reference to variant names.
Probably not for everybody, but a excellent work for its subjects.
Nowhere near as good as Inside the Victorian Home.......2005-08-14
Ms. Flanders' previous work, Inside the Victorian Home, was as delightful as it was informative. That's why A Circle of Sisters is such a letdown- its informative alright, if you care about a group of self-absorbed cold-natured odd ducks. (In 30 years, brother Harry received two visits from his loved ones. Sister Edie was disparaged as a failure for remaining unmarried, even as they all expected her to play nurse and nanny as their situations saw fit.)The subjects, including Rudyard Kipling, never quite come alive on the page. This may not be entirely Ms. Flanders' fault--there seems to have been an awful lot of letter burning in this family. (Plus its hard to feel empathy for people who kept their emotional lives so tightly buttoned down.) The writing, addtionally, is not as crisp as Inside the Victorian Home. You'll forget these women soon enough, and be glad you did.
That said, her book Inside the Victorian Home is excellent. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
Always intrigued by Edward Burne-Jones’s portrait of her great-aunt, Amy Gaskell, Josceline Dimbleby’s chance meeting with the painting’s current owner encouraged her to explore the mystery of her own family’s past and the life and death of her beautiful great-aunt.
In her search, Dimbleby uncovered a passionate correspondence between Burne-Jones and her great-grandmother, May Gaskell, Amy’s mother, which continued throughout the last six years of the Pre-Raphaelite painter’s life.
As she delved deeper into their engrossing lives, questions emerged. What was the deep secret May had confided to Edward? And what was the tragic truth behind Amy’s wayward, wandering life, her strange marriage, and her unexplained early death?
Weaving together the threads of this tale, Dimbleby takes us through a turbulent period in English history and visits the most far-flung corners of the Empire. William Morris, Rudyard Kipling, William Gladstone, and prominent members of the Souls also play a part in this sweeping, often funny, and sometimes tragic story. Richly detailed and exquisitely told, May and Amy is a stunning account of hidden love and family secrets.

Phenomenal.......2005-05-25
This is a really phenomenal work, with page after page of great Burne-Jones illustrations, all in his signature style. If you like his paintings you'll love these illustrations. IMO they stand as some of his best compositions - nearly every one of them could have been turned into a painting on par with his best work.
