With John Murphy's book 'Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets', this book should also be studied diligently. This book contain a few technical nuggets which only Martin Pring can offer in depth detail.

Great book. I got it thinking it'd relate mostly to candle charts. But it covers everything. The book is pretty confusing at first and takes awhile to get used to the author's writing style. He uses words that college business students should understand. It'll take you forever to read, if you want to learn what it has to offer, but it's well worth it. Just google the topics after reviewing to get a full understanding of what Pring offers. Well worth the $10 used price (got lucky!.

I have nothing to say more than what I said in the title , this book is essential for learning technical analysis , no wonder why it's included in most of the reading lists of the technical analysis certificates .

Major Layout Problems!.......2007-03-13

While the book is generally well organized and presents materials helpful to the beginning technical trader in simple terms with examples, visual organization of the book leaves the reader page flipping and frustrated. Rarely are the graphics or charts which are referred to in the text on the same or nearby page. I constantly find myself having to turn pages and search out which chart is being referenced, a very detracting exercise when trying to study technical analysis!

Good book.......2007-03-08

Goes through all the basics of trendlines etc, I really enjoy Pring's writing style and analogy's. This book alone won't turn you into a profitable trader, but will give you the core you need to seek out a good system and understand it.

Decent Study Guide for Fans of the Main Hardcover.......2006-05-11

For those who enjoyed the "Technical Analysis Explained" by Pring, but want to know if they can recall some of the facts, this is a great accompaniment, whether for an examination or just for some fun. (For CMT and CFT Level 1, this book would not help much, as the exam questions do not cover much charting, despite assigning the main text book as core reading). The multiple choice style questions cover nearly all chapters. There are around 10 to 20 questions per chapter, which implies that one can finish the entire quiz book within a day. At $20, it is a bit on the expensive side, hence my low valuation.

Excellent start on Technical Analysis.......2005-12-19

Many of the reviewers for the hardback mentioned typos etc. I have the inexpensive International Edition (paperback) and didn't notice anything significant.

Anyhow, I found this book to be one of the best books on TA as it covers all the supporting theories of TA - not just the usual studies on momentum and price indicators.
It covers business-cycle theory & Dow theory, as well as some other wave theories towards the end.

Overall, the book's structure has been planned very well (and this is unusual for most books on TA). It aims to explain the relevance of technical analysis before taking you briefly into each topic. This helps place everything into perspective and avoids the reader from getting 'lost' in all the technicalities.
It can also help you understand the link between Fundamental Analysis and Technical Analysis.

Like all TA books, it won't give you the complete answer to the markets, but combine this with some other more detailed reference books and it will serve it's purpose.

A brief but very comprehensive book on technical analysis. One of the best books I have read on the subject. Easy to read English.

good TA contents but mainly for long term investors.......2001-10-05

The authors did a good job to explain TA clearly to the readers. In term of depth and clarity, it is as good as John Murphy's classic. The interest rate is Pring's strong area. He took an economist views to use TA. This was not a bad thing. But most of the charts he used were weekly charts. The signals to noise ratio was very high. Every inicator could give very clear and good signals. But when you use the daily charts, it simply couldn't happen. You can use weekly charts to make decisions ONLY if you are a lone term investor. This book is certainly not for day traders.

Look elsewhere.......2001-07-30

Not sure where some of the reviewers' heads are, but for candlestick charting, this book has beginners patterns in it. For more in depth coverage, Steve Nison's books are best.

As far as the KST system goes, there are better.

This is a basic book at best in my opinion, and after the initial few chapters on charting basics, it continues into verbiage that to me isn't accepted consistently by seasoned traders or analysts.

My recommendation is John Murphy's book "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets".

An essential book for your TA library.......2001-06-08

What I particularly liked about this book was its practical application of using the many facets of TA to come up with a view on the market overall and then identify attractive sectors within it. Pring is quite momentum/rate of change oriented but his "Know Sure Thing" indicator is worth trying if you haven't already. Tying in other macro indicators such as interest rates into your investment decision is also very informative and helpful.

Beyond Candlesticks.......2000-10-31

This book is truly amazing, I have recently finished reading it and I am considering to buy his first book too. He explains each and every chart very thoroughly, although I think it would be better for someone to read his first book first, because some he has some references of a few patterns from his first book. For anyone who wants to learn about japanese technical analysis techniques, this book is a MUST.

A good start.......2001-07-06

I picked up this book because I wasn't sure which manual would be the best. The good news is it's a fast-read and it shows you what your computer screen will really look like. But the bad news is it doesn't really help you out. It just explains basic functions. For example, it will say, click on Billing and then Finance to do so-and-so. Read the choices and pick the one you want. It never says, if you're trying to do so-and-so, the best way is to do this. And if you're trying to figure out when to update your account, try entering in your figures during the month. Don't worry about waiting till you have your entire statement. There's no real advice in the book. Just directions. As a beginner to this program, I was looking for advice. As a computer-savvy person, I could figure out much of the information in the book, just by exploring the program. I'm afraid I'll have to pick up another book on this subject.

The most useful book on strip canoe building.......2007-08-31

I have many of the common books on canoe building. This book is by far the easiest to use. There seems to be two major schools of thought when it comes to strip canoe building: 1) floating furniture (The Canoecraft way) and 2) utilitarian (Hazen and Gilpatrick). I've built a solo canoe following Gil's methods and it has served wonderfully for 5 years. I've bounced it down rocky rivers and used it for many trips to the BWCA and Quetico and it has served admirably.

If you wish to build a work of art, then perhaps you should follow Moores's methods. Personally, I don't like external stems on a canoe. They widen the entry line and just look weird to me. Building them is also a fiddly undertaking and I'm not sure that they really add much.

If you want a functional and tough canoe . . . that is beautiful to boot . . . this book will help you reach your goal. If you have questions write the author, he has replied to my emails; usually the next day.

Not worth the money or read.......2006-12-28

This is a great book to learn how to build a half-way canoe. This is poorly done and offers building instruction that will leave you with an inferior boat. The best option is to buy Canoecraft...Canoecraft has everything you need to build a canoe and even includes plans and lofting directions. However many of the techniques described in this book are easier than those in canoecraft. But when you are out on the water you don't want to be worrying about if your boat is gonna hold together or not because you cut corners.

When I decided to build my own strip canoe I bought several books, including Gilpatrick's. Nearly everything I read was helpful, but "Building A Strip Canoe" was by far the best. He has included a number of different models (I built the 18' White Guide). And, his instructions are easily followed. Another plus was that Gil was available via email to help me get through some of problems, especially the fiberglassing. The result is a canoe that has made a number of trips down the Upper Missouri, and to the amazement of some of my skeptical "friends", has remained afloat. I recommend Gil's book without hesitation. "Canoe Craft" is good, too, for add-ons such as scuppers, and stem pieces.

Worth it for the caning instructions alone.......2006-02-25

I bought this book paired with the more advanced Canoecraft book and really couldn't be happier with both of them. Having read the Canoecraft book first I was left with some questions reguarding technical aspects of boatbuilding that this book answered wonderfully. The approach the author takes reflects one of an experienced teacher explaining the task with an eye toward common mistakes and how to avoid them. While the finished product as outlined is a bit heavy and lacking in elegance, as compared to the Canoecraft boat, I plan to utilize both books in the construction of my canoe. (Please note that the heaviness comes from extra fiberglass reinforcement that is a real necessity in the rocky streams of Maine, the author's state, and not so much here in the Midwest.) The real bonus, aside from the caning instructions which are wonderful, is the fact that you are also getting scale plans for eight boats which can be scanned, scaled and printed full size at your local copyshop. The project is easily completed by anyone who is remotely aquainted with woodworking techniques and in many instances the author explains multiple methods of doing the same step with a list of the pros and cons of each method. Excellent book to buy for your first canoebuilding experience.

An okay book . . ........2006-08-08

if you really need it. Personally, I thought some of the scenarios were more likely to have occured during the high school years than during college. For instance, the one in which the girl in college becomes jealous of her single mother's time and attention when the mother starts dating. I would expect someone who is considered mature enough to go off to college to be mature enough to handle the fact that mom has a love life. As for the sections devoted to parents who harrass the university faculty/staff on behalf of their kids - surely these folks are aberrations? When she was in HS, I sometimes intervened in situations but over the last three years, my daughter has grown into a mature, poised and intelligent young woman and as such I expect her to handle these things on her own. I would never dream of intervening in an academic situation on her behalf now. It's frankly none of my business.

Faculty, administrators, and staff all over the country have experienced growing problems with the "Net" or "Echo Boomer" generation, aged 17-24 years old. Poor work habits, a weak work ethic, an exaggerated sense of entitlement, disrespectful and destructive behavior in the classroom, and lack of responsbility plague American college classrooms because of this generation. It is not truly new; the addition of parents who cling, refuse to take responsbilitiy themselves, and are frequently deluded into believing that "baby Einstein" deserves nothing less than a Nobel Prize simply for coming to class--this is the dimension that is new.
Parents should educate themselves about college policies, student development, and their own psychological issues. This book is a start. Begin with the Federal Educational Right to Privacy Act, or FERPA. Even if you pay for junior's education, you may NOT legally access information without explicit, documented, and directed consent of the student. Furthermore, it is the STUDENT who must understand Code of Conduct and Academic Standards policies.

Furthermore, ask yourself if YOU would hire a worker who: does not come to work on time and frequently leaves early, who allows cell phones to buzz through important meetings and works on personal materials on your time, leaves for weeks at a time and expects management to "catch them up to speed", who does little or no work and complains when work is assigned, will not turn in material in a timely manner, and when questioned sends relatives or friends to you to "DISCUSS" "your problem." FYI: this could be YOUR son or daughter!

I found this book to be a great resource dealing with sending our first child off to college. It was helpful knowing his uncharacteristic behavior was normal, and comforting to know other parents have experienced the same. I was surprised to find not only behaviors explained, but great advise regarding the financial puzzles new to first time college parents. This book is a must for parents of college-bond children!

Just what the doctor ordered.......2005-04-27

If Dr. Spock were alive he would have approved of this book. This is one of the few good parenting books dealing with "almost adult" children not living at home. It showed me that one of the hardest things a parent has to do is to let go of active parenting (ie, telling them what to do) and adopt a posture of mentoring with their college-aged child. Why was this so hard? We do it with other adults all time. This book gave me "permission" to stop worrying about letting my child make decisions which affect her life (and not necessarily mine). Once I read the scenarios (which are all too real) and the different approaches to responses, I found myself much more comfortable with the idea of helping her to determine her own fate -- one of her choosing and not of mine. Yes, it still takes practice and yes, sometimes I am holding my tongue (and choking on my response), but our relationship is better and she is becoming her own woman instead of a mini-clone of me. Guess what? Now that I am not judgemental or authorative she is telling me so much more. Now THAT'S an improvement!
