Book Description
The ultimate guide to an ever-changing city, the book covers every section of New York, from swanky Museum Mile to the now-fashionable Meatpacking District. Illustrated chapters and delightful walks, mapped point-to-point, celebrate the city’s fascinating history and architecture. Exhaustive, unbiased local reviews detail the hippest hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, sights, and shops.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible.......2005-01-30
The train directions are either out of date or were never correct to begin with. The book tells you to take trains that do not exist, and then they don't even include the phone number you need to call a cab when their bad directions make you end up lost. I can't fault the book for leaving out lots of good restaurants, but I can fault it for including some that were so bad they made me sick.
I cannot comment on everything in the book, but as a guide to restaurants, museums, and transportation it is the pits. I have used dozens of different travel guides in my life, but this is the only one that has ever been so bad I felt it deserved a negative rating.
Do not be fooled. If you are interested in New York's cultural sites or food that won't keep you up with heartburn, do not buy this book. It contains nothing but misdirections, and the people leaving me negative feedback just think it's hip to be a Time-Outer.
Fun and Simple To Follow Guide to the Vast CIty.......2005-01-09
Time Out New York (TONY) , which is updated annually, is a MUST for anyone visiting the city. The first chapter is a concise and fascinating history of New York, outlining important events throughout its vast history. Proceeding through this indespensible guidebook, you'll find detailed information about where to stay, eat, and drink, and the places and events not to miss in each neighborhood of the vibrant city. Because the guide is written by locals, the recommendations and warnings are pertinent and current from people "in the know," who astutely guide residents and visitors through the maze that would be overwhelming without this terrific guide. Each place listed also has address, phone, and often websited listed, as well as prices and review. The maps in the back of the book are easy to read and the book is well organized and indexed
Great Resource.......2004-09-10
Another great travel book from the British Time Out people, in the tried and true Time Out format: Not alot on history or architecture, like you get with the Eyewitness or Knopf guides, but a straight to the point attitude in a easy to research portable book up-to-date and very helpful. The Time Out viewpoint is that partaking of the life of the city is as important as looking at the sights, so there is always great information on what to do after the museum closes, how to enjoy the city. There are 75 pages on sightseeing, a 114 pages on Arts & Entertainment, plus sections on bars, restaurants, and shopping. Each section is broken down by location, so the restaurants in Soho are listed togther, as are the bars in Midtown, which is the right way to do it.
Great for research before the trip to get an idea of what you plan to do &when, with websites for the individual places listed along with phone numbers and hours of operation. The maps are good; there are some pictures (nothing like Eyewitness). This is a good book to get before you go to help plan your trip to get the most enjoyment out of it, especially for nightlife.
Best general guide to NY available.......2001-05-09
The Time Out Guide to New York is, in my opinion, the best general guidebook you can buy to the city. It's updated annually, so the material is fresh, but best of all it brings the Time Out attitude and style to the guide book series. It's filled with full color photos (similar to the Knopf guides) and the listings contain not only the usual sights, stores and attractions, but also some of the more funky, out of the way places.
Plusses:
- Comprehensive coverage of most areas (see restaurant note below) - Lots of photos - Web site addresses for most listings - Content is also on their web site (www.timeout.com and www.timeoutny.com ) and updated regularly. - Not just the usual "everything is great" attitude that you get with Frommers or Fodors. - Contains ads for shows, hotels, restaurants (I like this as it gives more of a picture of the item. NOTE: There's big disclaimer in the front stating that even though they accept ads, their reviewers are independent)
- Small enough to fit in purse or (larger) back pocket. - Good cross referencing between sections
Minuses:
- Restaurant section not comprehensive. It's still very good, but selective. This may be due to the fact that they also publish a very comprehensive restaurant guide to NY. - Portions of the museum section are a bit skimpy. For example, the Knopf guides have 3 or 4 pages on the Metropolitan Museum, including floor plans and highlights of each collection, whereas this guide has about two column-inches of text on the Met. - No web site listings for restaurants.
As I said, this is the best guide to New York I've found (and I have them all). Highly recommended.

the art of short selling by kathryn f. staley.......2000-05-18
the book is good overall. it gives you many detailed particular examples and is worth reading also because it gives you an idea which SEC forms to review to determine if a stock is worth buying or shorting. A bit weak on general guidelines though.
Customer Reviews:
Must have in preparing for the CPA exam.......2007-02-13
I have found this book to be very good at explaining the CPA exam content. I have purchased several review books loaded wih practice questions and find this style of a book to be a very important supplement to the exam preparation. It's more like reading a novel than study materials.
Customer Reviews:
Key word is review.......2003-02-03
This realtively short book is a good place to review accounting principles and terminology with excellent examples provided covering Balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports, etc. This was used as a supplementary text in a course I just completed that was sponsered by a Society of Financial Analysts and used in conjunction with the other material provided by the instructor this book was quite helpful. I will continue to use it as reference. However if you are looking for detailed training in accounting this is NOT the book to choose.
Highly recommended.......2002-11-28
I am a software engineer who needed to learn the basics of accounting in a hurry. If you know nothing about accounting, this book is for you. It is a small, thin (150pp) book that gives you 'just the facts' with simple real world examples (i.e. why is 7up an asset but Coca Cola is not?)
Not for those unfamiliar with accounting.......2002-07-10
While not a good source for those who have never taken an accounting course, this text is great for those who have taken an introductory course but need a concise refresher. As appropriately stated in the title, it is a review of the essentials of accounting.
Save your money.......2001-08-31
If you want just a general review of accounting go to about.com and do a search on accounting. They have better online articles on accounting. This book is a joke.
Review of essentials of accounting , Au:Robert N. Anthony.......2000-03-26
Concept of fundamental accounting principals were discussed in length giving pertinent examples. Balance sheet, cash flow and financial statements. Learning the language of acounting is presented in an easy to read format. I have gained good insight into the language of accounting. It's a good book to understand the fundamentals. I recommend to any one who is interested to learn the language of accounting.

From the supplier: A businesses can divide its corporate structure into an operating entity and an owning entity to escape judgment debt that arises from law suits. The operating entity conducts the business and is vulnerable to any liability the company may suffer. The owning entity controls corporate assets but is not subject to liability. Such a corporate structure renders businesses judgment proof. No principle of law exists that would allow courts to combine the two separate entities to combat judgment proofing.

Customer Reviews:
great book, very beautiful quilt patterns and new techniques.......2007-09-19
I love the projects in this book from Piece O'Cake disign. It made me want to learn more about applique. I had to get more books from the same Authors. The book provides helpful information and tips on color selections.
Beautiful Designs, Could Have Used More Detailed Instructions.......2006-06-05
I was so inspired by the quilt patterns in this book and have enjoyed seeing Piece O' Cake designs evolve into ever more creative and inspiring quilt patterns with applique. After studying all the techniques for applique and giving my hand a try at it, I felt confident that I was ready to take on the challenge of some of their more advanced quilt projects. While I absolutely love the designs, I found some problems with the instructions and the templates for the Dresdon Dots pattern. My favorite quilt store once said to me that this is a common problem and that a good teacher is really a good editor. After a few rounds of trial and error I finally managed to figure out how to get things just right (www.quilguilders.blogspot.com). It would have been so helpful if there were more step by step directions, and close-up photos of finished blocks. If you haven't taken on the challenge of a double wedding ring quilt or something like a dresdan plate quilt, you might need to study these techniques first through a class or another book that focuses more in depth on construction techniques. For the publisher (C&T Publishing), I think it would be enormously helpful to have their instructions kitchen tested to make sure they are clear to the reader. Quilting is a very expensive art form, and I know more then one quilter that has purchased fabric, books, and supplies, only to wind up in total frustration at not being able to accomplish the desired results, due to editorial errors, ommissions, and so on.
Excellent! A+.......2005-04-20
Ms. Goldsmith and Ms. Jenkins have done it again! If you've enjoyed their previous books about quilting and applique, you'll enjoy this one too! There are a variety of designs; just looking at them gives me ideas for many different types of quilts everything from the usual bright, sparkly, fun Piece O' Cake color ways to romantic, folk, traditional and contemporary.
Most of the designs in this book have curved piecing, which the authors give clear and concise directions to help you. Many of the patterns in the book also have paper piecing sections. Though, previous knowledge of either Piece O' Cake designs or previous knowledge of paper piecing/curves may be helpful they are not a prerequisite. An adventurous beginner could easily dive right into any of the patterns without difficulty. The authors have excellent directions for all of the various techniques involved in all of the quilts in the book.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves Piece O' Cake designs, anyone interested in curved piecing, applique, paper piecing, or anyone with a sense of adventure. A+

There was a time when nearly everyone recognized Ben Shahn's scathing pictures from his most famous series, The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti, 1932. Sacco and Vanzetti, two working-class anarchists convicted on trumped-up murder charges, lie dead in their coffins. Behind them stand the top-hatted men of the old, Anglo establishment, hypocritically mourning the poor immigrants whose lives they destroyed.
These days, it may be hard to understand how vital such storytelling artists were to the political life of their times. In Ben Shahn: An Artist's Life, Howard Greenfeld does justice to those heady days, placing both Shahn and his work in the context of the Great Depression, the rise of unions and social relief programs, and the beginnings of the civil rights movement. With uncommon fairness, Greenfeld also chronicles the difficult, contradictory personal life of this brilliant artist, who, for example, began and ended his career working on Jewish themes but cruelly abandoned his first wife, Tillie, and their two children to marry a Christian woman.
Greenfeld adeptly traces Shahn's development as one of the 20th century's most important illustrators and narrative artists, comparable to Daumier and even to Goya. Carefully researched, this biography is simultaneously respectful and objective. Greenfeld, who has also written biographies of Puccini, Caruso, and art collector Albert C. Barnes, has a gift for seeing a densely complicated life as an understandable, admirable whole. --Peggy Moorman
Book Description
Beginning in the thirties, he created bold and powerful paintings of often controversial subjects, and in particular his portraits of Sacco and Vanzetti caused a storm whenever they were exhibited. After working as an assistant to Diego Rivera on the ill-fated Rockefeller Center mural, he began creating his own arresting murals--in Washington, New York, and New Jersey--which are among the finest such works ever painted in this country. He also excelled as a photographer as one of the distinguished group known as the FSA photographers, which included Dorothea Lange and his close friend Walker Evans. His life crossed the paths of many others, too, including Albert Einstein, Alexander Calder, William Carlos Williams, Archibald MacLeish, and S. J. Perelman.
During World War II, he produced some of the most striking and effective propaganda posters, before returning again to painting, always choosing subjects that touched a nerve and were just as often politically powerful.
Shahn also entered the world of advertising, but completely on his own terms, and was respected for it. His life was always involved directly with his times, and he was a member of the intellectual community throughout his career, as well as a courageous political activist. His unique, unforgettable work won him shows in museums all over America, including the Museum of Modern Art.
Ben Shahn is the first complete life of the artist, and it is illustrated throughout with his photographs, pictures, and paintings.

The World in a Grain of Sand.......2002-01-23
Too often local history is limited history: it is so concerned with the details of a particular time and place its fails to contextualise, to analysis, to grasp the bigger picture. Good local historians ought to "see the world in a grain of sand", as William Blake would have it. The Little General and the Rousay Crofter is my history book of the moment because it suceeds wonderfully in linking the local with capital `H' History. Okay, I'm basis - I come from Orkney and am interested in the place. But I am sure that folk with no Orkney connection would find the story of the debt-ridden General with an empire career behind him and his struggle with the crofters and Free Kirk Minister on the Orkney island of Rousay compelling. Thomson never falls back on stereotypes of the bad landlord exploiting poor crofters, but instead picks through the evidence with great care. The result is a detailed and (I think) gripping study of the break-down of old bonds of patronage between the land-owning class and crofters, of the complex allegiances and tensions across a whole community this breakdown suddenly throws into sharp relief, of the politicisation of ordinary people such as the remarkable James Leonard, leader of the crofters. And there are one or two remarkable twists in the tale. Highly recommended, and I've never met William Thomson.
