Best "Walking Tour" ever!.......2000-03-17

If you can go to San Francisco and take Don Herron's Hammett walking tour...do it! I promise you will be entertained, informed and exhausted (remember, SF is a city of hills.) Don is really an expert on the life and literary merits of Dashiell Hammett, especially the works he produced while a resident of this beautiful city by the bay. Over the many years that Don has guided this tour, he has uncovered (and willingly shares) many fascinating facts and factoids about Hammett and 1920s San Francisco. If your travels never take you there, however, this book is a worthy substitute. Beautifully produced and well-written, Don's book is perfect for the armchair traveller and any hard-boiled mystery buff.

DeRosa has picked excellent papers. If one reads the papers in detail, the currency derivatives literature, as well as related derivatives literature, becomes very easy to understand.

This book presents highly technical papers on diverse topics from variuous academics. It would be very helpful to anyone looking to understand theoretical aspects of FX derivatives. Since most papers are written by different authors, notation is not consistent. In addition, academics do not always write like Hemingway. Nevertheless, the book covers everyhting from vanillas to exotics very well.

From the supplier: A procedure for pricing derivative securities when the underlying asset has abundant time-series properties is outlined. The development of an underlying predictive density that uses numerical Bayes techniques shows potential. The developed techniques worked well with complicated time-series models and suggest that additional fine tuning of the model is needed along with the use of nonsample information. In addition, further development of the time-series specification of the predictive density would be beneficial for future studies.

Totally biased marketing attempt.......2006-09-27

I was disappointed in this book. It really offered me no more information or insight than I could have gotten for free off the internet. Mr. Waymire writes harshly about financial advisors that get compensated by commissions but fails to acknowledge the fact that many customers get irritated by being nickeled and dimed constantly by fees. Many investors would rather see their money grow quietly without seeing the compensation that advisors receive.

Why argue to remove the choice from the consumer? As consumers, we have a right to choose how to compensate our advisors - or how not to, or to do the research ourselves. As an investor, I am tired of the "fee-based, fee-only" mantra. Why can't I sit with an advisor who will explain to me his strategy or his product, and if I like it, I buy it? Why should I have to pay a fee for him to sell me on putting my money with him so he can sell me a fee-based account?

While it is absolutely important that investors trust their advisors and ensure that people who are watching over their money for them are both honest and well-trained, Mr. Waymire demonizes anyone who does not fit into his particular "model" - his 17 Paladin principles. It reads as if Mr. Waymire's harsh criticism of advisors with better sales skills than himself probably stems from years of being outperformed by people he thought inferior - and then washing out of the industry to criticize those who outperformed him. This entire book smells of "sour grapes," not the objective know-how that I paid for.

Must Read for Anyone Seeking Financial Advisors.......2003-12-13

Obviously, Dr. Jim has the nack for speaking to people. This book is kind-of a transcript of his talk radio program. He really keys in on the real need people have, or what they are looking for in their question. He gets to the point and doesn't waste my time!! The book is broken down by subject categories and I can find the answers to many common questions very quickly.

Its fun to read (because it reads like a talk radio show) and the last chapter is a hoot!!

I had this book and lost it. It is the best soap book I have found. It is clear and the directions are easy to follow.

I think it is a good comprehensive resource.

I would like to point out that there are many different techniques in soapmaking and each person will eventually find what works for him or her. I personally soap with my pre-melted oils at room temperature (way below 98 degrees) and my lye solution at room temperature too.

BUT: Add your lye to your water, not the other way around, and wear your gloves and goggles!

As I said - mileage may vary! Use this book as a resource, do more research, try it, and you will find your way!

Don't buy this for recipes.......2007-05-12

I took a soapmaking class and bought this book because I was told it was a basic book. It makes for some interesting readings, but, out of the four recipes, two use tallow and one uses lard. There is a whole chapter on how to buy tallow from your butcher and then take it home and render it, strain out the gristle, etc. In the soap recipe that uses lard, it says the soap may have a bacony smell. If this is your thing, then this book is for you. It just wasn't what I was looking for.

The easiest book on soap-making to begin with.......2006-12-13

This is a very basic book on soap making and is the best choice for beginners. It is easy and fun to read and the basics are clearly explained.

The book offers four basic recipes for making soap, followed by very interesting-to-read history of soap-making, and at the end contains an overview of enhancing the soap with colors, scents and other additives, as well as short recipes for special soaps (soap for dry skin, soap for oily skin, soap for dandruff, etc).

You'll be making your first batch of soap in no time with this book. You can then get other books on soap-making and get infinitely creative with different ingredients.

good basic book for anyone wanting to see how soap is made and to get practical experience doing it. Has recipes to follow which would give you hands on experience. They are for small amounts, which is fine for making soaps for yourself or as gifts. Also if you mess up a batch of soap, its not so bad cause it's a small amount and would not cost that much.

Excellent, practical........2005-02-24

This is an excellent book on parenting preteen and teen daughters. It's written for both moms and dads. Though it's apparent that most readers will be moms, dads would benefit from reading about how to talk to their daughters about food, eating and body issues especially.

Some parenting books can be more philosophical than helpful. In otherwords, they tell you about a parenting idea and why it is superior, but don't tell you what to do when you are in the trenches with your child. This book is practical. Each chapter has examples of various hurtful, difficult exchanges between parents and daughters. Then the author analyses "what just happened". If you understand what just happened between your daughter and you, then you are better prepared to respond rationally next time you clash with her. Then the author finishes by giving suggestions about what to say next time. "What if you said..." thus and such.

The converstations between moms and daughters in this book can be poignent, painful as a pin prick, and just as loving. It's very touching. It has helped me talk with my 10 year old daughter without losing my head a few times.

This book is largely based on a 1994 doctoral disserttion by another author submitted at the University of Chicago. The book covers most but not all of Pellegrini's travels throughout Europe when he was famous as a history painter and decorator, having worked in England, France,Holland ,Belgium, Germany, Austria and possibly Prague during various trips out of Venice. The book does not cover the majority of his works in Venice but uses them for some comparisons. Pellegrini can be considered the founder of the Venetian Rococo style of painting and without his works in the early 18th century, the styles in France and Italy would have been different due to his departure from the darker and more somber style of the late 17th century. Tiepolo, for example, owes a great deal to Pellegini's pioneering style.
