There is increasing evidence that the CD1 system has been conserved throughout mammalian evolution and is capable of presenting structurally diverse diacyglycerol, sphingolipid, polyisoprenol and lipopeptide antigens. These features of CD1 antigen presentation systems now point to a new and expanded view of the natural function of ab T cells, which involves surveillance of both the protein and lipid components of target cells. Further, cellular systems that were previously considered to have functions in lipid metabolism can now be studied in context of their immunological functions. This volume provides a comprehensive discussion of these basic aspects of CD1 biology and summarizes the most recent research into the role of CD1 in infectious, autoimmune, allergic and neoplastic disease.

We traced the incorporation of fatty acid biomarkers into Calanus glacialis Jaschnov (CV) during a long-term incubation experiment using bacterivorous dinoflagellates and diatoms as food. Copepods fed Oxyrrhis marina Dujardin during a 3-week acclimation period developed an omnivorous lipid composition, relative to wild-captured copepods, characterized by significant losses of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and diatom fatty acids [16:4(n-1), 20:5(n-3)], and increases in saturated fatty acids (SFA) and 18:1(n-7). Levels of a wax ester-based omnivory index [unsaturation coefficient (UC)], verified by gas chromatography (GC), also decreased in response to the relatively PUFA-poor dinoflagellate. After half of the copepods were switched to a diet comprised of the diatom Thalassiosira hispida Syvertsen (PUFA-rich), the data showed reversal to a more herbivorous lipid composition (increases in UC and relative amounts of PUFA and diatom fatty acids). We assert that UC, derived from routine thin-layer chromatography analysis (Iatroscan) can quickly determine in situ feeding strategies (i.e., degree of omnivory) of wax ester-storing copepods. None of the eight odd and/or branched fatty acids (OBFA) initially detected in C. glacialis increased in response to a diet of O. marina which was rich in these compounds [mainly iso (i)-15:0 and anteiso (ai)-15:0]. Lack of transfer of these and other fatty acids [e.g., 22:6(n-3)] could be related to the physiological state of the copepods (early diapause). We suggest that the bacterial fatty acid 18:1(n-7) may be more useful in inferring connections between Calanus spp. and the microbial food web than the odd and/or branched chains.

Just returned from London, and tried to use this book as a guide. Many of the sites don't exist, and those that I found were generally not worth the time.

The previous criticism is nitpicking; I'm going to London to teach some courses for American students, and I found lots of neat information here, not only about museum contents related to my classes, but also info on sites for my wife and 13 year old daughter to explore. true, thre is no index, but the book is so short, compact, readable, that you don't need one. Just do what i did: highlight the sites you want to see; it'll take you under an hour; you can do it on the plane!
A good idea, but poor execution.......1998-10-31
This book is loaded with quite a few free things to do in London, England. Indeed, they seem to be good suggestions. However, the book lacks an index, which makes it hard to revisit interesting ideas (what page is the Sikorski museum on?). Also, the book offers only the briefest of blurbs about each of the sites it suggests. This means that it is hard to tell what you are going to actually see.

There are many ideas for quilt blocks in this book, and most of them are very... cute, but not in a good way. I personally don't like making blocks that are cats or dogs. This would be an excellent book for an older quilter who does things the old way, but if you are young and want something fresh and fun, try out Black Mountain Quilts, Cotton Way, or Kim Diehl.

Useful book with multitude of block patterns - I like especially the variety of applique designs. I have one problem: the binding is too tight to enable proper photocopying of designs on inside of pages, a nuisance when you want to enlarge a pattern.

Everything you ever wanted to quilt, and then some.......2005-09-17
There is only one thing I don't like about this book: It is so much fun to look at and read, I'll NEVER get around to cutting and sewing. But if I ever do make any of the fabulous blocks in this book, I am going to come out with fabulous quilts, hangings, table runners, and anything else I want. There are a few projects in here too, and the instructions and photos and pictures are all clear, concise and fun. I love this book, for the blocks and for the inspiration.

This book gives diagrams for 501 4 inch blocks and a few examples of how to make these into quilts. The 4 inch blocks cover traditional designs such as sawtooth, friendship star and attic windows, a wide variety of floral designs, sunbonnets, block for each month of the year, holiday themes, hearts, Christmas, Easter, Santas, Halloween, trees and leaves, birds and butterflies, building blocks, ships and planes, stars, baskets, alphabet, numerals, juvenile, cats, sewing and southwest inspired blocks.Simple instructions are provided. Many blocks lend themselves to foundation piecing.

This is a good book to get inspired. Wonderfull just to look at all the patterns, some are difficult to make. I also use it when somebody mentions a block and I don't what they mean.

If you are into 4" blocks it is a treasury of patterns if you are an expert at applique this is for you. But if you are a beginner you might find this book a little lite on directions, for coping the block difficult. It is an excellant reference book for later ideas.

Any pattern you are looking for is there. The patterns are easy to enlarge, or downsize even further for you mini-quilters. It has projects to complete. I have used the projects as spring boards for my own creativity. It contains seasonal, children's, holiday, floral, sports, and regular patch work patterns.

This book is a must have for any quilter. There are so many blocks that the cost is unbelieveable if you figure what you would pay for that many patterns elsewhere. My mother even bought this book after she saw mine...and she doesn't even quilt (yet). My 4 year old calls it mommy's best coloring book. I can't think of a better gift for anyone that sews.

This book is my favorite devotional ever! Twila does not only encourage listeners with her songs of encouragement, but she also has a way of encouraging her readers through her books. This is her 3rd book/devotional to date. She tells of life experiences and lessons learned with scripture and biblical stories. Also, if you like her music, she has lyrics to many of her songs that pertain to each devotion. In addition, Angie Paris, Twila's sister is the beautiful illustrator of this book. I recommend this to any Christian who needs daily encouragement.

Very, very helpful book.......2007-09-10
This book was instrumental in helping us manage our toddler's biting problem. We learned that his daycare was using ineffective strategies to try and solve the problem. For example, the book describes that timeouts are typically not effective for toddlers.
Our solution was to switch to a new daycare whose philosophies meshed with those described in this book. The daycare believed that the biting was purely the problem of the daycare to manage, there wasn't anything wrong with the toddler or the parents, and the toddler would grow out of it. Since our child started at the new daycare, his biting has dropped to almost nothing.
I must have read thirty different web sites before I read this book, and this book had more information than any of them. If you are having problems with a biting toddler, I recommend this book.
The book is easy to read and gives lots of examples. In spite of the title, this is NOT a dry, humorless "policy and procedure" manual.

This book was a godsend - both for the practical advice for parents, but because if the problem is happening at daycare, there's little a parent can do from work. This book is written from the point of view of childcare/daycare experts and provides practical advice for addressing the problem positively and gently from within the daycare (in partnership with parents).

This book is an excellent resource for toddler teachers and administrators. I am using the text in one of my trainings for teachers who work with toddlers and they have found it to be very beneficial.
