Basic Guide Written for the Tea and Cookies Crowd.......2005-06-17

I bought this guide in advance of my June 2005 visit to Cork and the surrounding area. Although I have traveled throughout Europe, this was my first visit to Ireland. Cork, as a 2005 European City of Culture, was a disappointment. Even locals admitted to me that not much really was happening in Cork this year. Although "the city," as many locals referred to Cork, can be busy and hosts a fair number of bars, there aren't many attractions in town.

This guidebook provides a general outline of city locales, and a substantial review of the restaurant scene. If you enjoy tea and cookies, as well as visits to the "English Market" and Butter Museum, then you would probably give this guide a higher rating. However, there seem to be few alternatives of recent vintage. As with any guidebook, be prepared for significant changes in listed and actual prices. I contacted several of the listed lodgings as well as many additional ones I located on the internet, and discovered the rates were significantly higher than those listed in the guidebook. I ended up finding a place in Rushbrooke, a 20-minute train ride from Cork, which was both affordable and comfortable. Cobh is a good lodging option and is frequently served by rail (except on Sundays, when the first train is after noon.)

Of course, you may have a different experience and value the insights in this guidebook. However, I was generally disappointed by the guidebook and by Cork. Hopefully, both will see improvements for future travelers.

Do not buy this book. All these positive reviews look very similar. The titles are all in capital letters. Obviously a scam just the title is. If it sounds too good to be true it usuall is!

As I see it there can only be three categories of people writing positive reviews for this book. 1. Mr. Bowser himself. 2. Mr. Bowser writing under a pseudonym. 3. Someone else that Mr. Bowser got to write a positive review.

Not what I'd consider a book on investing.......2004-11-16

I recently purchased this book, having been curious upon seeing its title. I assumed that I'd be purchasing a book that explained the hows and whys of an investment system.

I must say that I'm extremely disappointed. The book appears to me to be a justification for why Bowser's "investment system" is a good idea compared to traditional "large cap" stocks or mutual funds. I didn't see anything that struck me as actually explaining the system itself. What I did notice was the book's mention that "all you need to get started" is to subscribe to Bowser's newletter for $54 a year and see his specific stock recommendations. In my opinion this book is not a description of a "system" - it seems to me more like an advertisement for another, more expensive product.

I didn't find anything of value in this book, other than the general sentiments that "sometimes Wall Street misses a bargain", and "don't invest all your money in one stock". Worthy points, but not what I was expecting out of the book. I don't see anything that I'd consider unique investment advice in this book.

Book about the Bowser Report.......2004-05-19

This book has very little information on how to buy stocks. It is a big advertisement. Basically tells you to buy his Bowser Report for $54 per year and invest 10,000 in the stocks he lists.

Helpful, but not a miracle worker........2007-08-10

I found Essentials Accounting I to be very helpful in certain areas for my Accounting class, but it did not contain every aspect that my college course covered in Accounting 1 (there were about five chapters covered in class that were not in this book).

Also, I found that some topics were not as clear to me as I would have hoped. But perhaps that was just my problem and not the fault of the book (Accounting is not an easy subject for most people).

I found it best to go ahead and read the textbook even though this book claims it will eliminate "the need to read and review many pages of textbook and class notes." This may be true for those gifted by God with the ability to catch on easily, but I think most people won't find this book to be a total replacement for their textbook and class notes.

This book is a really good supplement, however, and I do recommend anyone taking Accounting 1 to purchase it. If I had the choice all over again, I would still buy it. Just don't count on this book alone to pass such a tough course.

Comprehensive overview of feline behavior from UK biologist.......2004-06-28

U.K. biologist Roger Tabor's book is a cleverly illustrated and fairly comprehensive overview of feline behavior. Beautiful full-color photos are used very effectively throughout the text. However, his biologist's focus favors cats in their natural state. He sees the increasing trend towards confining cats in the U.S. and U.K. as a major contributor to behavior problems (p.120). While this may be true, many U.S. bird-lovers might dispute the British study he refers to that found outdoor cats were not threatening bird populations (p.135).

This book is not a primary cat care manual, or a collection of detailed case studies, but it is an excellent supplemental text for any cat owner who wants (and needs!) to understand their pet better. Though much of it is not of any immediate use to owners of neutered/spayed indoor cats, the entire text is full of fascinating detail and illustration of all aspects of feline behavior throughout the life-cycle. Tabor starts from biological descriptions of the feline class and works towards the behavorial specifics. The problem-solving section is only the last 20 pp. of the book, but it seems thorough enough to cover most common situations.

This is a beautifully illustrated, intelligent, straightforward book that contains just about everything you ever wanted to know about cats. It avoids the cuteness of many cat books, dealing instead with serious issues of conservation of wild cats and expressing the author's special fondness for mixed breed cats (or, as he calls them, "Moggies"), because, he maintains, they are the purest breed of cat and closest in genetics and behavior to wild cats. (Mercifully, Roger Tabor avoids the annoying affectation of using the pronoun "she" in referrence to all cats.) The historical information on how cats become our domestic pets is particularly fascinating, and the health advice and care instructions for cats are right on target and quite useful.

I have to say that I have a fondness for this book. It reminds me of the books I read as a kid, especially Funk & Wagnall's Animal Encyclopedias. It covers a wide range of topics such as kitten development, territorial behavior, cats and people, playing. Roger Tabor is a renowned cat expert. He has often been featured on PBS. In fact, that is why I bought the book. I pride myself as a cat expert, but there are things in this book I never knew about cats. One important fact - if you pet a cat too much they might nip you. Often cats gets sent to shelters because they are misunderstood. This book will help people understand cats better. Great Book, Great photos.

This book is very informative. It has everything from cats whiskers, ears, and eyes to cat pregnancy. It has lots of great pictures that make this book reader friendly and easy to read. If you have a specific interest in cats, or you are just interested in felines in general, I would highly recommend this book.

Excellent Tailoring Reference.......2007-09-29

I agree with everyone's opinions here and confirm that this book has the same content in the Singer Tailoring book that is part of the useful Singer Sewing Reference Lirary series published in 1988 by Cy DeCosse Inc. The table of content are a spot-on-match to the Singer original as are the clear photos using contrasting thread for clarity.
The explantions of using fusible interfacing (which tailoring purist in the past would turn their nose up at as being low class and cheap) and machine stitching instead of pad-stitiching, both of which are found in today's expensive Armani clothes, are very helpful.
I have just about every tailoring book published, including the Adele Margolis, Roberto Cabrera and Stanley Hostek classics, but this is the book I reach for often.

This book is great, as long as you are an experienced seamstress [sorry for the possible sexist misunderstanding]. Really great tips and hints for someone who has significant experience with sewing and/or tailoring. Wonderful photos!

comprehensive illustrated tailoring guide.......2007-05-16

This is a fully illustrated guide to the three main methods of tailoring: custom tailoring done by hand, machine tailoring, and tailoring using fusible interfacing. The book is quite comprehensive, covering the entire process of making a tailored jacket from selecting the materials, including a detailed section on different types of interfacings, through fitting the pattern, cutting and marking, and all steps of construction for the three methods. There is an illustrated guide to the tools used in tailoring, detailed instructions for several kinds of pockets including patch pockets, lined patch pockets, welt pockets, single welt pockets and welt pockets with flaps, and a section on bound buttonholes. Linings are also covered, including hand installation of linings, machine installation of linings, partial linings, and how to make partial or full linings for an unlined jacket pattern. The book focuses on jackets with notched collars, explaining that these require the most tailoring, but shawl collars are also covered. Other types of collars are not specifically addressed.
The book is clear and comprehensive, and a great choice for anyone wishing to learn tailoring. I do have a few criticisms. Some things are explained in great detail, such as the pockets and a section on threads, equipment and techniques for hand sewing. Some others are not and omit a few details that would have been helpful. For instance, the book explains that taping the front is done in custom tailoring but not necessary in machine or fusible tailoring, and it clearly explains how to tape the front step by step and with full color photo illustration. It doesn't explain why taping the front is important or what it does. I found out courtesy of one of Claire Schaeffer's couture patterns for Vogue that taping the front weights it so that the fronts of the jacket hang perpendicular to the floor even when the jacket is open instead of slanting. The book mentions jump pleats in the lining section but doesn't explain how to form one. There is a section comparing the three methods and examples of how one might use a combination of methods, but it doesn't really explain the pros and cons of each method. The author also seems to have a few personal biases, such as recommending against silk as a lining material because it can get water stains under the arms.
Overall it is a very good guide but I would recommend supplementing it with other books if you really want to get into the subject.

Good for jackets.......2007-04-05

The book is well written and has good illustrations. It offers machine stitching alternatives to the hand pad stitching, which may be of use to women who are tailoring their own jackets but do not have the time to sit and do the stitching by hand. This machine stitched version is the only part that I might consider using as an alternative to the hand stitching. I am not a fan of iron-on interfacing and would not use it in a tailored jacket, but I know someone might and the book shows how it can be used to give a decent look to a tailored jacket.

I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to tailor a jacket. I still prefer Adele Margolis and Ethel Wyllie as my references for tailoring, but this is a good updated version with easy to follow instructions, especially for someone who has never tailored a jacket.

Lots of pictures.......2007-03-17

This is a really good book on tailoring jackets. I'm a person who needs to see it, and this book has "400 how-to photographs" that do a good job of giving close up photos of exactly what is being described. This book is certianlly worth adding to a sewing library.

Great for kids!.......2006-01-11

This is a great book that empowers kids to deal with children who tease them. So often adults tell children to walk away...that is a difficult thing to do...especially for children who are learning so many life skills. "that's not fair they said that", "They are so mean". So often the kids want to tell on them to get them in trouble...to find justice in the "wrong" behavior. This focuses on what the child can control and not what they can't control.

This book has helped my daughter a lot! She is a child who gets her feelings hurt quite a bit. This has helped empower her and, overall, made many of the teasing children stop teasing her.

I highly recommend it!

Grandma Rose to the Rescue.......2004-05-23

When Simon is teased by his friends, Grandma rose compares teasing to fishing hooks and shows Simon how he doesn't have to get caught up in the mean game his friends are playing. Simon's Hook is an excellent way to teach children to be more resilient.
The cover (not yet shown today) has a red background and Simon is sitting on a hook under water as if it was a swing. Fish swim about and all the characters are fanciful and smiling.

The basic story includes a "bad hair day." When Simon's sister can't find her gum, she finds that it is in Simon's hair. Unfortunately she has to cut off a lot of his hair to get the gum out. This story will be very familiar to children. I remember this happening to me when I fell asleep while chewing gum.

Simon is doing quite well while wearing a hat, but when he falls and his hat falls off, all the children start to call him lawn mower head. As he runs home he accidentally runs into Grandma Rose. Simon tells her what happened and tells her about the teasing.

"But why do you bite? "
"Bite?" cried Simon.
"I didn't bite anyone!"

After going into her garage, Grandma Rose returns with a fishing line. A piece of paper is attached to the end of the hook and a cat is trying to bat at the paper. By waving the paper around for the cat, Grandma Rose shows how the cat bats at the paper. Then, she dangles the paper in front of Simon. Then Simon catches the paper too.

"You're not a free fish anymore."
"But what else can I do?"

Then over a glass of lemonade and a few cookies, Grandma Rose tells Simon a fish story. The next two pages are filled with fish thinking, saying things or biting at pieces of paper with put downs and teases written on them.

I had to laugh because some of the fish are quite adorable (the "peace" fish named Harmony Hippy Fish is a hoot) and the entire story is rather cute. At the end of the book all the fish are drawn in one picture and their names are listed next to them. The shark is of course called: "tiny." They also have some witty comments that one could consider to be a snappy retort. At the bottom of the ocean we see an Instead of Biting do this sign. It lists five ways to avoid getting caught by teasing.

There are pages and pages of fishes saying various things that are quite amusing. Even I was laughing out loud at a few of the fish stories.

When Simon returns to the park he has a new attitude and his friends enjoy his new witty remarks. He no longer takes them seriously and can enjoy the attention.

Karen Gredig Burnett writes highly creative books and Laurie Barrows knows how to draw the characters Karen is talking about. So, together they create a magic all of their own.

If your child is struggling with teasing, this book will empower them and show them that they can laugh at difficulty and embrace change. I might even start using a few of the witty comments in this book when my husband teases me. This book is definitely not just for younger kids. It can also empower adults and teenagers.

I loved this book, and bought it immediately after it was recommended at a
parenting workshop. My 6-year-old daughter asked for it to be read to her over
and over and quickly caught on to the techniques. She took it to school,
and her teacher read it to all the kids (interestingly, her friend who
bullies her, didn't seem to like the book that much!!!) It helped me -
my older sisters used to tease me endlessly, and my husband can still bring
me to tears with his teasing. The book actually teaches you techniques so
you can feel powerFUL, not powerLESS, when teased or put down.

It doesn't really try to explain why other kids tease or bully, or lament
that they do. It just deals with the only thing you can really control,
your own reactions to it.

I use this book every year to start out the school year. I teach fifth grade, but the kids need these skills so much by the time they get to fifth grade. I made a poster using the strategies presented in this book and post it in my room all year. I remind my kids frequently of what Simon says we need to do. It helps. GREAT BOOK!

This handsomely produced, definitive book is replete with reproductions of paintings, etchings, and lithographs of waterfowl and related works of Frank W. Benson, a pivotal artist of the American Impressionist movement. Benson's accurate depictions of birds have commanded high prices, and rightly so. This book will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of art collectors.

Faith Andrews Bedford gathered diverse and firsthand source material. She covers Benson's career by melding his primary interests: his family, his art, and the sporting life, not to mention his lifelong passion for birds. By interlacing her text with commentary from interviews with Benson's family, diaries, letters, photographs, and historical articles, she creates a lively, immediate flavor.

Chapter three, "A Sense of Place," begins by telling how the Benson family first visited North Haven island in Maine's Penobscot Bay in June 1901. They eventually bought Wooster Farm and summered there for about 40 years. I have a particular fondness for that island and was transported by the descriptions of their initial visits and their farm on Crabtree Point. To exemplify how neatly Bedford packs information, here is a quote from early in that chapter: "Benson's North Haven paintings of his family were praised by critics and collectors for capturing the `joyous gaiety' and `holiday mood' of life on the island. They sold almost as soon as they were seen by the public...Benson was not an indoor man by nature and far preferred the `life outside the studio.' Although his wife and daughters enjoyed the theater and music and for decades held the same two seats for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he did not often accompany them. Nor did he enjoy the confines of church. He felt the place to worship God and respect His handiwork was through nature."

There is mention also of their tennis court at the farm, interest in golf, and of course the birds and fishing. Bedford adds other significant information about how the island affected Benson's art: "It was to become the site of many milestones, not only in his family life but in his art as well. Benson began his etching career on North Haven. Originally, this aspect of his work was merely a diversion, an experiment." This taste gives an inkling of the abundant information compiled. It is clearly presented and a good biographical resource.

Benson lived a long, fruitful life. Bedford, who has become a scholar capable of making such statements, says, "Benson was, perhaps, that rarest of humans, a happy man. Not that he ever rested on his laurels, not that he did not look constantly for challenges...He had reaped rewards and financial success from his art, had won fame and recognition in his own lifetime-something he realized few artists ever achieved...In Benson's own words, the secret to both tranquil enjoyment and success was in doing what you love."

The 235 folios of John Waltham's register contain letters, dispensations and letters dimissory, institutions; parochial visitations, and judicial acta. Five of the calendar's seven appendices supply additional related matter. As well as expediting routine business, the bishop is seen resolving, with royal support, a longstanding dispute with his chapter, resisting metropolitical visitation, using canon law to excuse his failure to levy papal taxes and statute law to safeguard patronage from papal provisions, and uncovering details about Lollard masses. It is of some interest that the clerks who preside over his courts differed markedly in their methods and sentencing policy. The medieval diocese of Salisbury covered the old counties of Berkshire, Dorset and Wiltshire, and the register will be of considerable interest to local historians as well as to medievalists.
