Book Description
Asset prices are driven by public news and information that is often dispersed among many market participants. These agents try to infer each other's information by analyzing price processes. In the past two decades, theoretical research in financial economics has significantly advanced our understanding of the informational aspects of price processes. This book provides a detailed and up-to-date survey of this important body of literature. The book begins by demonstrating how to model asymmetric information and higher-order knowledge. It then contrasts competitive and strategic equilibrium concepts under asymmetric information. It also illustrates the dependence of information efficiency and allocative efficiency on the security structure and the linkage between both efficiency concepts. No-Trade theorems and market breakdowns due to asymmetric information are then explained, and the existence of bubbles under symmetric and asymmetric information is investigated. The remainder of the survey is devoted to contrasting different market microstructure models that demonstrate how asymmetric information affects asset prices and traders' information , which provide a theoretical explanation for technical analysis and illustrate why some investors "chase the trend." The reader is then introduced to herding models and informational cascades, which can arise in a setting where agents' decision-making is sequential. The insights derived from herding models are used to provide rational explanations for stock market crashes. Models in which all traders are induced to search for the same piece of information are then presented to provide a deeper insight into Keynes' comparison of the stock market with a beauty contest. The book concludes with a brief summary of bank runs and their connection to financial crises.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK FOR MY SEWING BUSINESS.......2007-06-12
I bought this book, in the hopes that it would help me with the finer details in making up cushions. Well, I am more than pleased with the book. I was a little apprehensive, after reading some of the reviews here, but am really glad that I went ahead anyways, and bought the book. The book, is easy to read and the directions are easy to understand.
Useless.......2007-03-14
I couldn't wait to get this book, but what a disappointment. Don't expect to get clear instructions because you won't! The diagrams and instructions are extremely vague, and you will be left up in the air as to how to complete an item, you get one tiny bit of info and you're meant to just know how to finish the thing off. Not worth the money and if I wasn't so far away I'd return it!!
Linda Lee.......2007-01-12
I met Linda Lee and she thought I had just bought the book and offered to give me a new one, because I have used it so much already and she thought it was damaged... I just smiled and said no I brought mine to the class and she smiled knowing I have already but it to good use... worth the money...
Needed more pictures.......2006-04-15
Although the idea for this book is very good . Instead of staying on the subject and trying to explain to a novice what all this is about it goes on to other things like novelty edges etc which is not the reason I bought the book for. And they don't as usually make good use of the available pages for instance there are great big pictures of the finished project and tiny ones for the steps and very few for these. And then a whole page of a picture of materials which is completely useless like page 22, 86, 84, 72, 66 and of course page 58 which appears twice in this book. Such a waste of pages and photographs.
Great book!.......2006-02-28
Excellent book for sewers to have for reference - even if you are not into embellishment. There are many great ideas and techniques. A very good explanation of mitering corners. Easy directions with great pictures.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good, light reading.......2006-11-19
This book was pretty good. There were definitely some good ideas in it for enhancing family life and starting traditions. A few of her stories did bring a tear to the eye. Not the best, but worth the read!
A handbook for parents full of personal anecdotes, fanciful stories, and good common sense advice.......2005-12-02
Carol Kuykendall --- author, speaker, and strategic projects director for MOPS International (Mothers of Preschoolers) --- has compiled what she considers the five-star winning components of a successful family. According to this mom of three grown children, the five key elements of a great family begin with love -- expressions that inspire and comfort; fun -- activities that recharge a family's batteries; loyalty -- lessons on sticking with family through it all; growth -- embracing new challenges and seeing the value of stretching; and faith -- holding close a relationship with Christ that shines vividly and practically into the lives of others. With many personal anecdotes, fanciful stories, and good common sense advice, Kuykendall does a marvelous job presenting a handbook for parents that is easy on both the eyes and the heart.
The author's two-part text deals with family matters that focus on the beginnings of new family life when a young couple first discovers they're pregnant. Some of the practical points offered in this section include deciding who to invite to the actual delivery, naming the baby by taking into account potential teasing/taunting as a result of this all-important choice, hashing out basic parenting decisions regarding naps/nursing/discipline, dealing with those unmet expectations that crop up almost immediately after giving birth, and learning to fit into the extended family with the newest member without stepping on other siblings' toes or feelings.
Kuykendall then delves into dreaming for a bit. Just what kind of family does the new couple want to be? The author discusses the value of looking back in order to glean the best of past childhoods while wisely leaving not-so healthy patterns behind where they belong. She also details the importance of taking a realistic look at where a family is today, accepting where people are, because this is the point from which everyone can move ahead. Finally, a brief segment on looking ahead with hopeful, faith-inspired enthusiasm closes out this foundational topic.
To complete part one, Kuykendall does a lovely job presenting the "gifts" children bring to a family. Clearly, children are gifts from God, but with them come powerful life lessons on perspective. Consider the gift of "do-overs," in which parents can relive the innocence and wonder of childhood discovery through their children's eyes. This important truth reminds parents that God is the giver of second chances. Kuykendall also cites the gifts of humility as children "reveal us to ourselves" as imperfect parents. Children also model sincerity of a simple, uncomplicated faith.
Once this solid foundation is set, Kuykendall spends a generous amount of space re-defining her five-star qualities, each with its own separate chapter (Love, Fun, Loyalty, Growth, Faith). Every chapter opens with a lengthy discussion that includes biblical principles and selected bible verses, personal insights from the author's own family life, specific action points, and quippy yet powerful quotations for increased take-away reminders. One of the most telling quotations included in this timely text appears near the end, and it typifies Kuykendall's entire message beautifully. "Family is...A soft place to land."

FIVE-STAR READING FOR MOMS IN SMALL GROUPS.......2005-09-27
When it comes to raising a great family, it helps to find a mentor who's walked in your shoes. In her newest book, Five-Star Families, Carol Kuykendall offers you a blueprint for bringing up kids in a culture bent on tearing families apart. She shares how parents' positive influence can create a generation that will twinkle like stars in the universe.
What is a five-star family? Kuykendall lives out her theory that what matters most are five qualities: love, fun, loyalty, growth, and faith. She invites readers to explore each topic with her, using personal examples from her own family and a host of others. As the mom of three adult children and a new grandmom, Kuykendall has seen the process of family-making come full circle.
Her easy-to-read style fits right into the hectic pace of busy parents. She writes, "The process of becoming a five-star family happens in the midst of maneuvering our way through the bumps in our lives." She shows how investing in relationships and taking deliberate steps to create memories will build a resilient family that will bond through thick and thin.
The book is perfect for small groups. Each chapter ends with questions that serve as creative springboards for discussion. As a director and mentor mom for MOPS (Moms of Preschoolers), Kuykendall is in a unique position to impact thousands of homes. Her book is pure delight to read, always pointing to God as the true creator and builder of families that shine. - Heather Lynn Ivester, Christian Book Previews.com
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!.......2005-09-02
Wow!!! This is a ton of great information from a 'been there, done that' Mom and Grandma.
The author shares wisdom, humor and stories all wrapped in grace...
(I loved that I could read it and be inspired to be better, encouraged for the great things I AM doing, but not feel guilty about all the stuff I'm NOT doing.)
This is a celebration of the family. I think I might make it my new standard baby shower gift!!!
Book Description
Keenly anticipated by art historians throughout the world, this comprehensive study is dedicated to the work of Robert Campin, the great Flemish artist first known as the Master of Flemalle, who, along with van Eyck, is considered the founder of the Netherlandish painting of the Early Renaissance.
Robert Campin, the teacher of Rogier van der Weyden, was among the first European painters to break with the more artificial International Gothic style, focusing instead on the connection between religious and secular life. In his comprehensive study of Campin, Felix Thürlemann sheds new light on this important era of European painting, a period when the depiction of supernatural shifted to everyday settings, the fascinating use of symbolic messages first appeared, and the use of oils opened up a new world of subtlety and differentiation in the artist's palette. Based on years of intensive research and marvelously illustrated with full color plates and details of his works, this study enables the art world to examine an artist whose superior talent, despite his long-lasting anonymity, was never itself in doubt.

Customer Reviews:
the Hobo Philosopher.......2007-08-26
This was great! Being raised in Lawrence, Mass, I found this right up my alley. I have Irish on my father's side and both my dad and his father were formen at the Arlington mills up on Broadway. I love the history, the nostalgia and the poetry. I included a few poems in my book about the area "A Summer with Charlie" now also listed on Amazon. I always wondered where I got my poetry inclination. It wasn't in my immediate family. I think I got it via osmosis from the type of man described in this book. I must have just breathed it in with all the mill smoke, dust, dirt and sweat. This is a good one. It easy history.
Wonderful look at Irish immigrant life in NE.......2004-11-26
The View from Shanty Pond is a great find if you are interested in reading about the lives of NE Irish immigrants who lived and worked in mill cities like Lawrence and Lowell, Massachusetts.
The book is very well written. It describes many aspects of life in Lawrence as seen through the eyes and poems of Peter Cassidy ("the Shanty Pond poet"). Cassidy lived from 1861 to 1938. Cassidy's poems are very down to earth and at times touching in their sincerity and simplicity.
The author explains the historical background of the period (and the poems) using just the right level of detail. The subjects covered in the book include work in and strikes against the textile mills, the role of religion and politics in immigrant life, sports (baseball and boxing), saloons, World War I, Prohibition, and the Depression.
If you enjoy an account of real people living their lives through tumultuous times, you will enjoy this book.
An important, unique contribution to Irish American history........2000-04-05
The View From Shanty Pond is a unique blending the historical writings of Joseph Blanchette with those of Peter Cassidy, the author's late great-grandfather to present the reader with a true and compelling account of the Irish immigrant experience in America at the turn of the 20th Century. Blanchette combines his own prose with the period poems and songs of his great-grandfather and in doing so deftly weaves a rich fabric of folk, local and national history that is as entertaining as it is informative. Lively, charming, original, painstakingly researched, incorporating a wealth of information from Peter Cassidy's scrapbooks of poetry, songs, newspaper articles, photos, and memorabilia, The View From Shanty Pond is a compelling window-in-time through which we can come to understand and appreciate the Irish immigrant experience in the burgeoning and industrial America of yesteryear. Highly recommended.

Book Description
For today’s shell-shocked individual investors, financial expert Charles B. Carlson offers hands-on advice on how to survive — and thrive — in a wildly fluctuating market.
The economic recession of the past year, followed by the tragedy of September 11, sent a ripple of panic through investors in 2001. The market shed trillions of dollars in wealth, and hundreds of thousands of individual investors suffered substantial financial losses. The volatility we experienced last year was more than a fluke, argues investment expert Charles B. Carlson. With the ongoing changes in the economy, including changes in corporate reporting laws, instant availability of financial information, and the ability to buy and sell stocks with the touch of a keystroke, volatility is here to stay.
But volatility isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, Carlson argues, if you know how to weather today stormy markets, investing in them can be very profitable.
In The Smart Investor’s Survival Guide, Carlson shows investors how to make volatility work to their advantage. First, he argues, it is critical that investors match their investment style — growth, value, buy and hold — to the kinds of stocks they pick. For long-term investors, Carlson recommends that a portion of their portfolio be invested in what he calls the calm eye of the storm, “easy hold” stocks that have consistent, steady growth, and very low volatility. Even in the terrible market downturn of 2000, when the Nasdaq lost 39 percent of its value and stocks like Lucent and Cisco saw their share price drop by 80 percent or more, a number of investment sectors actually gained in value. The Dow Jones index, minus its technology stocks, broke even. In other words, even in the worst markets, not every stock or sector goes down.
Through what he calls the nine essential laws of successful investing in a volatile market, Carlson reveals:
• How to diversify the portfolios across stock sectors and investment vehicles
• The critical importance of matching one’s investment style — value, growth, buy and hold — to the kinds of stocks one invests in
• The importance of “easy hold” — no-brainer stocks — in a portfolio, stocks that will grow 10 to12 percent a year with minimal
volatility.
Written by one of the most trusted names in the financial community, The Smart Investor’s Survival Guide shows investors how to master today’s turbulent markets, and profit from them.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, a compass to guide us through these markets!.......2002-03-26
Chuck Carlson knows how to weather these stormy markets. He explains why even the most appealing stocks may not be right for everyone's portfolio and shows in clear, well-written ways -- how to buy and hold and build a portfolio that will make profits in the up markets as well as these downturns we have all been hurt by.
Some of this book's strategies presented coincided with my own: start investing ASAP, dont confuse investing with trading, buy only stocks and stock mutual funds, invest every month, buy and hold. The book also warns you about the common mistakes investors make and how to avoid them. Ultimately, he shows through many examples that slow and steady wins the race....this book was a great investment...Im even buying copies for my friends in my investment club.
Must-read for the post 9/11 and post Enron investor!.......2002-03-26
As we have all sadly found out in the past 18 months, volatility is here to stay and the depressed markets of the past year have sent all of us personal investors into a tailspin.
Carlson's newest book argues that these markets are not a fluke but that the ongoing changes in the economy, including corporate layoffs and the instant access to information, is going to keep the market see-sawing for years to come.
His basic buy and hold strategy (then at the right time, buy some more) is not sexy but sound. Especially useful are Carlson's chapters on using asset and time diversification to ride out the downturns and his list of easy hold stocks that reduce the effects of volatility on your overall portfolio.
Bottom line: If you are tired of the talking heads on CNBC. If you feel like you need a sound investing plan that will provide security and profit for the long-term.....buy this book!
Book Description
This book examines the little-known phenomenon of blat--the use of informal contacts and personal networks to obtain goods and services under the rationing that pervaded Soviet Russia. Alena Ledeneva analyzes the historical, socioeconomic and cultural aspects of blat, and explores its implications for post-Soviet Russia. The political and economic reforms introduced since the collapse of the Soviet Union have radically affected everyday practices, but an understanding of blat remains crucial for interpreting the social, economic and criminal problems that affect the development of a market economy in post-Soviet Russia.

Book Description
"If each individual in your organization became Shareholder Value-focused and made all of their decisions accordingly, you would have an almost incomprehensible competitive advantage." -Lawrence B. M. Serven.
For some time now, the conviction has been growing that traditional business planning methods are flawed and inefficient. At many companies, attempts have been made to address the problem with new budgeting systems, complete benchmarking studies, and reorganizations of finance functions. Unfortunately, while such initiatives may help reduce planning time, fundamentally they do little or nothing to make the planning process more effective. In this groundbreaking book, Lawrence Serven exposes the real reasons why planning so often fails to get results, and shows you how to transform the planning process from an "exercise in minimization" into a potent, results-driven management system that consistently creates shareholder value.
While most books on the subject discuss value creation in terms of grand strategic moves made by upper management, Value Planning takes a bottom-up approach. Lawrence Serven demonstrates how it is the cumulative effect of all of the little decisions made by individuals throughout an organization, every day, that makes or breaks shareholder value. More importantly, he shows you how to capitalize on that fact, and use business planning as a strategic management tool for aligning all levels of an organization-from the executive suite to the mail room-behind the common goal of increasing shareholder value.
Short on theory and long on step-by-step practical guidance, Value Planning gives you a complete blueprint for implementing a comprehensive value planning management system in your enterprise. Each chapter isolates a key aspect of value-driven business planning and contrasts it with traditional business planning models. Within each chapter you will also find valuable, easy-to-perform self-diagnostics that help you to assess your company's current status in the area under discussion, and a set of "Improve-ment Steps" that can easily be tailored to fit the realities of your organization.
Value Planning is an indispensable working resource for controllers, CFOs, finance directors, and budget directors, as well as for all upper-level managers involved in the planning process.
His work has been profiled in CFO magazine and Controller's Magazine, and he is the author of several articles that have appeared in Chief Information Officer and Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities. An award-winning public speaker, he has been the featured speaker at the AICPA and chaired a World Research Group international conference on reengineering the planning process.
Praise for Value Planning
"Serven demystifies shareholder value creation and provides a pragmatic, actionable guidebook for executives. Value Planning's step-by-step management system focuses business planning on delivering, not just predicting results. The book's self-diagnostic measures should prove especially useful in charting and assessing organizational progress." -Henry A. McKinnell President, Pfizer Inc.
"Value Planning addresses today's number one management issue - building a value management system-and provides a systematic approach with clear guidance that will be helpful to any company in creating shareholder value. I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it."- John B. Menzer Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
"Mr. Serven's approach is insightful and uncomplicated. Rather than simply focusing on theory, he has offered compelling real-life examples of how well-known leaders and their companies have built value for their shareholders." -Keith Rauschenbach Second Vice President, TIAA-CREF.

Finally, something PRACTICAL on shareholder value.......1998-12-24
Every book I have read about shareholder value has been long on theory and short on application, but Value Planning is different. It provides a hands on blueprint for creating a value management system to grow shareholder value. It's about time!
A blueprint for creating a value management system!.......1998-12-01
A lot has been written about shareholder value, but there has been little written about how to put theory into practice, which is what this book does. I highly recommend it.

The Business of Heart.......2000-03-20
This is an incredibly inspirational book that all should read. I personally related to the story about Becky Simpson, because I just returned from spending the week at her survival center in Cranks Creek, Kentucky. She does wonderful things for all who will accept them. The rest of the stories in the book also have inspired me to continue volunteering for those in need. A list of addresses in the back of the book is helpful in finding out more information about the individuals and organizations discussed in this book. Thank you very much for making this information available! **Susan

Sams Teach Yourself e-Real Estate Today is an easy and efficient way to access the vast amount of real estate information available on the Internet. This book not only teaches you how to find and buy a home online, it also guides you through the largely unorganized, confusing and bewildering mortgage marketplace. Four major sections divide the book into logical portions of the topic. Part I focuses on the process of buying a home. Part II addresses the selling of a home. Part III teaches you how to finance a home online. Finally, Part IV provides information that is specific to real estate investors.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference to go along with internet surfing.......2000-12-27
This is a great book with many very up to date links that can compliment your real estate purchasing along with using the internet.
He goes through which search engines are best to get to a very specific target as well as many online mortgage sites; bank sites. He goes into all aspects of buying "distressed property" which is something that we specialize in, so we found this a very good book.
Teach yourself how not to waste money on worthless books........2000-03-24
Not only did I waste money on this worthless book, I wasted a fortune on trying to sell my home using the advise of this guy. By the time I'm done, what little profit I made will surely go to my attorney to keep the buyers of my home off my back.
Teach yourself all about real estate on the Internet.......2000-03-13
Robert Bruss, a Bay Area lawyer and real estate broker, has written a review of this book that appeared 3/11/2000 in the San Jose Mercury News. Excerpts of his review follow:
...one of those rare real estate books that cannot be recommended to highly. Before you buy, sell, finance, auction or invest in real estate, check out the Web sites evaluated by this book. Readers who are not internet savy will quickly feel at home with this book with emphasis on Web site locations and attributes, not computer technicalities. Every homewoner, buyer, real estate investor and agent should have a copy of this book on their desks for easy reference, right next to their computers. That's where I keep mine. On a scale of 1 to 10, this superb book rates an off the chart 14, the highest rating I've ever given to a real estate book.

Book Description
Carl Ruggles (1876-1971) was the epitome of the New England iconoclast. A composer of the American avant-garde movement, he wrote, in a very concise and dissonant style, a small body of truly unique musical works. He lived to be 95, composing to the very end of his life, but left behind a mere eight sanctioned works which he had rewritten and refined over decades. In the 1920s, he was at the focal point of ultra-modern music-making. Since there is currently a renewed interest in his work, this bio-bibliography is timely and needed, and of interest to scholars, students, and performers. During the 1920s, had Edgard Varese or Charles Ives been asked to name America's greatest living composer, the response would have been "Carl Ruggles." Forty years later, such eminent experts on American music as Nicolas Slonimsky, Virgil Thomson, and Aaron Copland would each describe Ruggles as our most technically refined composer. Ruggles, with Varese and Ives, was the standard-bearer of the atonal movement in this century's third decade. With the rise of American realism, he slipped out of the public eye. Recent years have seen a resurgence of performances of his works and research on his music; consequently, there is a need for this timely bio-bibliography.
