A concise treatment of VaR.......2001-09-11

The author goes right to the point. He explains well the VaR-related mathematics. There are a few mistakes, which would be easier to note if all derivations were provided. Overall, this is an excellent book.

Best book on VaR.......2001-03-19

When we went to implement a VaR system, the price tag was going to exceed seven figures. Needless to say, I didn't hesitate to drop some money buying the available books on VaR. They all say essentially the same things. For practical worked examples, you can't beat Butler. But unless you are an absolute beginner (do you know what delta and gamma are?) you may find it too basic. The all-round best book is Dowd. It is well organized and a pleasure to read. It covers the math, but without getting bogged down in meaningless derivations. For readers who want more information, there are plenty of references to original sources. I followed up on a number of these, and was pleasantly surprised at how easy some of this stuff is to assimilate.

Not for implementors........2000-06-12

The author has done good work in introducing the basic concepts in Value-at-Risk. However, the text leaves some important statistical and implementation points hidden, making implementing VaR look far too easy. For example, there is no discussion about the problems involved in long-term forecasting of correlations and volatilities.

The much advertised "new distinctive investment approach", the so called "Generalized Sharpe Rule" is a rather naive treatment on classical risk/return analysis. However, the lack of mathematical rigour is well compensated with good references.

Best book on VaR to date. Clear, concise, self-contained. Perfect combination of rigurous theory with practical applications. The author has done an excellent job at distilling what is relevant in Risk Management. This book is better than all the other VaR books written so far combined.

Excellent Reference Book.......2007-09-19

After having taken a week long course in beading and then returning to the "real world" where I did not get to bead for a few weeks, I found that I could easily pick up this book for a quick review and follow the step by step instructions easily and with excellent results. I also own the same series for knitting and have referred to that for years when I needed a review. I believe that even a beginner with no previous experience would be able to follow the instructions with success. The book covers a good range of techniques with background info on the supplies as well. A definate for any beaders library.

A helpful tool for any beader!
Contains information about bead types, bead sizing, useful materials (needles, waxes threads etc), stitches types, stringing, beads in crochet, knitting, wirework, embroidery and macramé.
Small and simple to use, but I feel that I need to mention that this book is a reference and not to learn how to bead.
I mostly refer to it when I'm creating my own projects (I may have something in mind and I need to find a most effective way to develop it).
I was a little bit disappointed when I searched for peyote stitch- edge increase (not included) but overall the book is great and well presented.

I am fairly new at beading and found this book to be simple to understand and informative. The top spiral-bound book is easy to read and look up. It is a basic book that explains things clearly.

This has been a useful little book on the subject of romancing the woman in your life. what i prize,is the ability to use some of the basic ideas and suggestions to fuel you to create your own ideas, or reconsitute certain romantic ideas cited in the book and add a twist of your own... et Voila!

take as example: one idea for a special occassion, was to write a love message out on a strip of paper, put the message inside a baloon,then add some confetti into it; and lastly, attach a pin to pop the baloon for a great surprise for her on its discovery later on. well, this suggestion could double as an ingenious hidding place for one of the note clues you could leave behind for her if you were to send her on the famous scavenger-hunt where you leave behind for her different clues all over the house -(starting in the bathroom),leading her to the mail-box, then to the car, then all over town , ending up at a hotel room or some other place, with dinner or other fun, special reservation, engagement or treat waiting. et cetera

its a short read -(the 101 ideas), but i like it all the same 'cause it goes some way to empower you ,in that it helps you to realize that you have always had the ability to put together your own romantic, creative ideas, and awaken your genius.

i awarded 4 stars mostly because of the condition i brought to my reading experience; meaning i've had the fortune of reading other books on the subject prior, and as such quite a few of the ideas i happened upon in the book were somewhat already familiar.

This book gives you a very core life-key, primordial & essential to romance itself & to relationships; it helps you figure out your partners primary love language ie: what gift, gesture, et cetera they would actually respond to and appreciate receiving from you the best,...this way, you are totally right on target.

i would offer up more, but perhaps it's best left to a separate collage by bias of an Amazon Listmania some time in the future.

I am always skeptical about books like this. Most of the ones I have come across are usually pretty cheesy or so impractical. While this doesnt get five stars there is enough useful material here that it was actually worth getting.

The only thing better I have seen is The Romantic's Guide.

I thought I was already the expert on romance. But this book taught me a lot that I didn't already know. Wonderful tips for keeping the woman you love happy and content. Just simple stuff. Nothing terribly fancy or expensive. Just little things that any guy could easily do. And the woman we love deserve this special treatment. A little "Cary Grantish," and a tad bit traditional. But absolutely worth it for the guy who needs some helpful hints on the Romance front. Would make a great Valentine's Day gift.
