Essential for the Colorado Front Range backcountry skier.......1999-01-25
This book contains easy descriptions of touring and trailheads within day-trip distance of the Denver area. While the "extreme" backcountry skier may find that most tours described lack the desired excitement, there are still quite a few gems, and for the more classic cross country skier this book cannot be beat. Check out Dawson's guide to 14ers for the death-defying routes, but this book has everything to keep most skiers entertained. Most of the expert terrain described requires long approach routes, but every serious front range backcountry skier should buy this book without question.
Book Description
Moving beyond the strategies that managers have employed to create shareholder value -- now the standard for business performance -- management experts James McTaggart, Peter Kontes, and Michael Mankins reveal their powerful new framework for the systematic, day-to-day management of shareholder value. The authors attack head-on the fundamental weaknesses in current management practices, namely, the stranglehold that budgeting has over strategic planning and the lack of imagination in management plans that prevents real changes and consequences. They provide a systematic approach to "value based management" that eliminates these weaknesses, offering proven strategies for managing large, complex companies to consistently produce superior results for stockholders.
Building on more than 16 years of consulting experience with many of the largest and best-known companies in North America, Europe, and Australia, the authors delineate the fundamental principles of value creation, as well as the primary obstacles. Starting with the principle that "cash flows drive value," McTaggart, Kontes, and Mankins show how to create a single governing objective that will enable managers to make decisions most likely to increase the company's competitive, organizational, and financial strength. Building on the objective of maximizing shareholder value, they outline the value based management framework that directly links a company's strategies and organization to its value in capital markets. Using real-world examples, they describe how to develop business and corporate strategies that substantially improve competitive position and increase market value, often within only two to five years. And as most large companies lack the internal processes necessary to manage for value on a sustained basis, the authors show managers how to build the five key processes that are institutional value drivers: governance, strategic planning, resource allocation, performance management, and top management compensation. Mastering these capabilities is fundamental to the ongoing, consistent creation of shareholder value over time.
All companies, the authors argue, inherently possess an enormous potential to create higher value for their shareholders. With hundreds of examples of companies that have successfully employed the beliefs, principles, and practices of value based management, this book shows general managers how to generate superior returns and realize their business's full value potential.
Customer Reviews:
Required Reading for Private Equity Investors.......2006-08-31
A description of the importance of defining and emphasizing "best practice" to efficiently direct the business activities of any size organization and explanations about disruptive technologies. A strong description of "the value based" approach to management.
The Bible.......2003-02-11
I consider this book the bible of all books on value creation and how to achieve it. It is eminently practical and should be on every financial practitioner's bookshelf. I also recommend reading it annually. It is a wonderful compliment to the other value-based managment books in the market which tend to go long on theory. They're also excellent; but this combines value-based managment and strategy superbly.
Good for understanding how to create shareholder value.......2001-01-12
Good ideas for day-to-day management to manage value as well as big ideas for strategy. There were interesting section on how budgeting strangles strategic planning and what to do with about it. I think this is a great book for executives managing large companies in mature industries. It shows how to focus on value creation at every level of the organization. It gave advice on how to take action and achieve results.
The Value Imperative is a WINNER!!.......1999-04-16
The Value Imperative offers a great framework for managing for value. This book should be read by all corporate executives. It starts with the fundamentals on how value is created and links value creation to business strategy. The authors vividly explain how business can create value by employing a number of different competitive strategies. The final part of the book pulls everything together and focuses on the role of the corporate center in managing various business units and allocating resources.
An excellent, down-to-earth guide for corporate managers.......1998-10-31
A lot of books have been published on value based management, or managing to maximize shareholder value, but this is the best I've seen on several counts. First, it emphasizes process throughout: taking the corporate manager from governing objective to the nitty-gritty of individual business units, and showing at each step how decisions should be made to produce the best possible return.
"Value Imperative" addresses some issues I haven't seen discussed sufficiently in other books of this genre: most specifically, how to produce top value when you're operating in a low-growth or no-growth industry, and precisely what sort of managerial compensation structure fits best into a VBM framework. In every case, the authors' prescriptions are logical and understandable. Most importantly, they encourage the reader to believe that their solutions and disciplines are doable - challenging, but achievable.
Some management books strangle on theory and mathematical analysis, but this one doesn't - another reason I liked it. The authors keep the math - solid and useful analytics - in the appendices, while, again, the main text emphasizes process at the human level. What one sees mainly by way of illustration are flow charts which help make the VBM approach clear.
Encouragingly, nothing they write here seems dated -- although it originally apeared in 1994, "Value Imperative's" lessons apply to companies facing a slower-growing economy (as we may be now)as well as those in a fast-growing environment.
This book would seem best for large companies in mature industries, rather than start-ups, although some of its lessons may be good for the latter as well. It contains a lot of good case study material, and should be especially useful to companies that are reevaluating their commitment to some lines of business, looking atpotential acquisitions or divestments, revamping their compensation policy, or considering pouring a lot of resources into aggressively growing a particular sector (it's especially critical of "patient money" and "economy of scale" arguments for growth).
Managers who want to read something about their practice that's solid, practical, and not faddish should take a look.

From the supplier: Accountant litigation may now be pursued more often in state rather than in federal courts. This is because the Private Reform Act of 1995 has reformed federal statutes on professional liability, but has left state laws patterned about federal laws intact. The focus of litigation may shift towards state statutes such as the securities laws known as 'blue sky laws,' the mini-RICO statutes and the deceptive trade practices laws.

From the supplier: Statement of Auditing Standard (SAS) No. 82 covers audits of financial statements for periods ending on or after Dec 15, 1997 and clarifies but does not increase an auditor's responsibility to detect fraud. Under the standard, an auditor's duties relates to the discovery of material mis-statements caused by fraud and is not directed to discovering fraudulent activities per se. SAS 82 describes two types of fraud that can result in misstatements in financial statements.

Customer Reviews:
Not as informational as I would've liked.......2006-07-15
This book is full of colorful pictures, but I'm afraid short on the information I hoped to find within. If you are just begining to make your own cosmetics, this MIGHT have information you can use; however, for the person hoping to find new information concerning formulas, etc., no such luck.
Excellent book - perfect for beginners to experienced home-makeup chemists.......2005-12-31
This is a beautifully presented book, with gorgeous photo images. The recipes are easy to use, the ingredients mostly easy to find and natural. I would have appreciated just a little more information on color blending, but I plan to do my own experimenting anyway. Excellent job. Highly recommended.

Book Description
For more than twenty-five years, Mothering magazine has captured an audience of educated women who appreciate its "we'll inform, you choose" approach to parenting. Having a Baby, Naturally reflects this spirit with straightforward, uncensored information about pregnancy and childbirth, addressing common concerns and questions in a compassionate, nonjudgmental style.
Written by Peggy O'Mara, the longtime publisher, editor, and owner of Mothering magazine, it synthesizes the best theories and safest practices used in natural childbirth, including recommendations from the World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Throughout, O'Mara reinforces her belief that each woman's pregnancy and birth experience is a one-of-a-kind event. She covers such topics as:
- Nutrition, diet, and exercise
- Emotional self-awareness during and after pregnancy
- A trimester-by-trimester guide to what is happening in your body and your child's
- Birth choices -- offering suggestions, not "rules"
- Pain medication alternatives
- Birth locations, from hospitals to home birth
- Relieving morning sickness with natural remedies
- Prenatal testing
- Breastfeeding
- Prematurity and multiple births
- Balancing work and family
- The father's role during pregnancy and beyond
- Difficult subjects, such as birth defects, miscarriages, and postpartum depression, are also treated with sensitivity and candor.
Finally, a book for the thinking woman who believes in her own inherent capacity to make smart, informed decisions about her pregnancy and birth, just as she makes in other areas of her life. Having a Baby, Naturally is a celebration of childbirth and an accurate and objective guide to helping women fortify their spirits, develop trust in their bodies, and make the best possible choices to protect their new baby's health.
Customer Reviews:
Guide book.......2007-08-07
Anything that comes from Mothering Magazine I have found to be sound information. It is nice to know that there are concious people out there who trust in nature.
I expected more from Mothering. :P.......2007-03-20
Let me start by saying this is not a BAD book. If you are looking for an introduction to Natural Birth, this is a good beginner's guide. HOWEVER ~ having been a reader of Mothering magazine for a number of years, I expected something a bit more earthy, natural, and... well, RADICAL. This book is not it. It does discuss a wealth of topics, and as an alternative to some atrocity like the ridiculous "What to Expect..." guides, this is great, and I encourage you to read it ~ as a jumping off point for something a bit more Natural, like "Prenatal Yoga and Natural Childbirth," by Jeannine Parvati Baker.
I walked away from this book disappointed, and with the distinct suspicion that Peggy O'Mara watered down her views simply to appeal to a wider audience.
not enough info for me.......2007-01-12
I found the chapters short and lacking in information. I would recomend Dr. Sears' books over this one. I was very dissapointed in this book, dispite the fact that I love mothering magazine. Please, don't waste your money. Especially if this is your first pregnancy. I recommend The birth book and the pregnancy book by Dr. Sears.
Comprehensive Guide to Natural Pregnancy/Childbirth.......2007-01-10
This is a really great resource that I think all moms should have. It covers EVERYTHING related to natural pregnancy and childbirth. :) It's a comprehensive book on having a baby naturally!
Excellent comprehensive resource for all pregnancies.......2006-07-27
I received this book as a gift and it has become one of my favorite prenatal books so far. I've read the book cover to cover because it was so extremely interesting and very comprehensive that I couldn't put it down! It covers all the questions I've had as a first-timer in a very thorough way. Even moms who've given birth before can learn alot by all the info provided by this book. Basically the book will discuss a topic such as episiotomies by explaining the history of them and how they originated, what your experience is and what the risks are, in what instances might they occur, how to avoid one (a list of things to do beforehand), and if you do tear naturally what happens next. I like how when it discusses what an Ultrasound is, it not only explains what it is, but how it works, what your experience will be like on the table, how safe it is based on studies available, how useful it is during pregnancy, and when it is unnecessary. This is how the book covers all the topics: in a very thorough way. Other highlights for me were the statistics provided with the supporting info. For example, it will say that you need 27mg of Iron and then will list food choices and serving sizes to achieve that. I love how remedies are always provided for common prenatal concerns such as nausea, poor self-image, labor fears, sexuality, post-partum, etc. The book discusses sexuality and then gives you a list of ideas to help with issues you may be experiencing. It also sprinkles a couple illustrations of stretches or poses that are helpful during pregnancy with directions. I also love the side boxes throughout the book that give little tips like how to squat, aromatherapy, pregnancy affirmations to say each day, natural soothers, etc.
It takes the fear out of pregnancy by providing so much useful and practical information for anyone who is planning on being pregnant, those that are supporting a pregnant partner, and those that are actually pregnant. I just can't imagine NOT having this book, it's an invaluable resource for me. I have too many questions and fears and this book seemed to answer them and calm me down.
Other books I highly recommend are the "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" (Goer/Wheeler) midwife perspective that discusses the pros and cons of typical medical intervention, and my weekly favorite "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" (2004, Dr. Glade Curtis OBGYN/Judith Schuler) And incredible book that tells what parts of the baby are developing each week, as well as an actual size illustration of your baby's size, changes in yourself, and other important info each week.
Book Description
First published in 1944, Enemy Coast Ahead combines Gibson’s RAF career, including the famous Dambuster raid which he himself led, with the inside story of life in Bomber Command and is still a riveting read for the immediacy and vibrancy of its writing. Now, for the first time in paperback, Crecy Publishing has published Gibson’s original manuscript which was archived for almost 60 years. This uncut edition provides not only details of Gibson’s career, but also reveals his true view of the course of the war, of the wartime population, of his pilots and crews and of Bomber Command tactics. Combined with photographs and diagrams Enemy Coast Ahead – Uncensored remains one of the outstanding accounts of WWII seen through the eyes of one of its most respected and controversial personalities, but now allows the reader to know Gibson’s own story in his own words.

DAMBUSTERS RAID (Cassell Military Paperbacks)
ASIN: 0907579620 |
Book Description
First published in 1944, Guy Gibson's Enemy Coast Ahead quickly became regarded as the classic Bomber Command book, following Gibson's RAF career from flying the Hampden and Manchester at the beginning of WWII to the triumphant return home of the Lancasters from the famous 1943 Dambuster raid which Gibson led and for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Enemy Coast Ahead is also the inside story of life in Bomber Command throughout the first five years of WW2, culminating in breath-holding drama as the RAF planned, practiced and strove towards breaching the dams on that famous night in May 1943.

Great read.......2005-11-29
One of the best WWII memoirs I have ever read, this coming from a reader who does not like"Flying Stories". If an old friend had returned this book I'd have read it more than once.
An inside view of the RAF bomber pilots.......2000-05-29
I first read it when I was at the military aviation school in Venezuela and I was fascinated. It is very well written and you actually feel the intimacies of the bomber pilot. I recommend it to everyone who is interested in WWII history.
A first class story of special ops bombers in the RAF.......1997-07-11
This story of 617 Squadron's Dams raid in WWII was
written by the original leader, who won the VC for
his leadership , skill, and bravery in battle. You
won't put down this insider's look into the plan
and attack on the dams, at night, using custom
rotating/ bouncing bombs at 60 feet in the fog !!
Also read The Dam Busters, on the same
squadron, continuing the story to the end of the
war, with even more harrowing ops to follow, including
the great raids , and final sinking, of the Tirpitz.
