A Beautiful Little Gem!.......2000-12-04

My wife and I were given a copy of this pretty little book as a gift several years ago. We like it as much for the beautiful paintings and drawings (done by the author) as for the large amount of information it contains. The paintings are typically full page, colors well reproduced, and size large enough to show accurate details of the flower parts. These are really works of art.

This book doesn't cover all wildflowers, but does a great job helping us to identify and enjoy spring/early summer wildflowers in the northeast.

Judging by the Amazon ranking of sales of the book, it isn't particularly well known. That's understandable, given that it was published by a university press (Ohio University) 24 years ago. But in my opinion, it's one of those little gems to keep and pass on to your children. The price is very reasonable for a good quality hardcover book with this kind of content.

In a foreword to the book, the Director of the Denver Botanic Gardens refers to its "soundly scientific base". Sounds good to me. I'm not a botanist (I'm a retired engineer), but I do like the amount of information giveen on each plant. I especially like being given the origin of every one of those funny-sounding quasi-Latin names, along with pronunciation aids.

Because the written information is always on page facing the (usually) full page illustration of each flower, I don't have to thumb through the book looking for the picture. I do find myself having to refer often to the glossary of botanical terms at the back of the book, but that's relatively easy to do, and a fair price to pay for the extra information in the descriptions.

A complete guide, as beautiful as it is informative........2000-04-01

While planning a driving tour of mainland Europe, I came accross Baedeker's Switzerland. The book whetted my appetite for Switzerland with its many small but gorgeous full color photographs of sites throughout Switzerland. One can enjoy this book even without visiting the country. However, we did take this book along on our journey and found it to be an essential guide, chock full of detailed information. The full size foldout road map tucked into the back cover flap is ideal for a driving trip. The book also includes many smaller maps of towns and cities, and even maps of major museums and cathedrals. Also included is information on the history and geography of Switzerland, a list of hotels and restaurants, and basic travel information. Most of the book is organized alphabetically by town with information and photographs of each area; this is handy for looking up towns as you are passing through or deciding where to stop. Main attractions are rated with one or two stars, and we found these estimations to be accurate. I also like the format of the guide; it is not too large, a good size to travel with, with a plastic sleeve to protect the book and map. This book had everything we needed for the Switzerland leg of our trip, and I would even go so far as to say "it's the only guide you'll need." The photographs inside are so lovely that I keep it to remember beautiful Switzerland by. My only complaint is that this book is no longer in print!

The best map and guide book combination!.......2000-04-19

Baedeker's book and map of Switzerland are cross referenced, making it easy to chart a driving route while checking out all the great sites on the way. Hundreds of small full color photographs beautify the book. Towns and cities are listed alphabetically, and sites are rated with stars as to interest. A plastic sleeve protects the book and keeps the full size map tucked into the back. The size is compact for traveling, but somehow Baedeker's manages to jam this little book with everything you need to know about the gorgeous and fascinating country of Switerland. Lichtenstein is included also. If you're visiting Switzerland, and especially if you're driving through, you've got to have this first rate guide!

Other books I have on this subject are awfully advanced, and assume too much prior knowledge. This book has lots of detail in the instructions, both verbal and pictorial. The projects are simple, yet good-looking.

Clear and approachable..........2007-07-01

This is a wonderful book to get you started with metal jewelry. Mark Lareau covers the basics such as tools and how to use them. He prioritizes the tools, which is helpful when you're on a budget. The book includes little mini-lessons such as a one-page course on how metals behave--did you know many metals have a crystalline structure?--and a three-page lesson on how soldering works. He even devotes a page to stringing your jeweler's saw! Some of the descriptions come from the kitchen (peanut butter sandwiches, for example).

Lareau has a wonderful, approachable style of writing and takes away any fear you may have of using unfamiliar tools and materials. He follows his lessons with a variety of basic projects which build on the information he's given and which slowly increase in difficulty. Throughout the book are large, clear photos showing just how the steps should look.

Major challenges for life insurance companies have been posed by an unprecedented wave of mergers and acquisitions in the insurance industry and the emergence of non-traditional competitors such as banks, mutual fund companies and investment advisory firms. This is the first book to analyze the determinants of firm performance in the life insurance industry by identifying the `best practices' employed by leading insurers to succeed in this dynamic business environment. The book draws upon data from insurer financial statements as well as upon an extensive survey of life insurer management practices and strategic choices in distribution systems, information technology, mergers and acquisitions, human resources and financial strategies. Generic strategies such as cost leadership, customer focus, and product differentiation are analyzed as well as strategic practices specific to the insurance industry. Best practices are identified by measuring the economic efficiency of insurers and by comparing firms across the industry. Both cost and revenue efficiency are measured relative to best practice efficient frontiers consisting of the industry's dominant life insurance firms. Economies of scale and the effects of mergers and acquisitions on efficiency are also analyzed. Financial strategies are examined with specific reference to pricing policy, valuation of assets and liabilities, and the current state of firm-level risk management systems. The benchmarks established are the result of extensive fieldwork that identifies key financial risks and methodologies to both measure and manage them at the firm level.
The results discussed in the book indicate that firm performance is significantly correlated with management practices and strategic choices. Thus, life insurers can improve profitability by adopting optimal combinations of strategies. The book contains important new material on the effects of strategic choices in product distribution systems, information technology, mergers and acquisitions, human resources, and financial risk management policies. In the area of efficiency, the methodology provides a new approach for identifying peer groups of insurers and measuring the performance of individual insurers relative to their peer group. I checked out several other books from the library on pieced borders and I decided this one was probably the best. Diagrams and directions are good, and there are some awesome quilts in this book!

I have looked through the book but since I don't have a quilt in the works to try a pattern on, I cannot comment on the instructions for doing the pattern. The patterns that are illustrated look very good and gives a good choice of ideas to use.

Learn to Design Borders.......2006-11-12

This book is great! But it's not for beginners, or timid quiltmakers. Some of the designs are rather complicated and time consuming. But oh boy, what a difference a beautiful border makes to your quilt! You'll find patterns, diagrams, tables of measurements, and colorful before and after pictures of lovely quilts with and without the borders. The authors are two of our most talented and well known teachers, designers, authors and quiltmakers. If you are looking for that perfect border for your newly made quilt you'll find it here. But easier books for new quilters seeking to learn how to make the perfect border are out there.

Wonderful book for the next level in your quilt!.......2006-05-08

This book is an excellent example of how the intermediate level quilter can add additional zing to their quilts. Many beautiful borders have been given and offer a great deal of excitement for quilting borders.

The joys of imagination and planning are many in Crandall and Crandall's thorough guide. Accompanied by clear how-to advice and beautiful color photographs, the book covers attractive supports, pruning, maintaining and propagating advice as well as how to use vines for space maximizing, camouflage, fruit, scent or just beauty.

Separated into chapters such as Hardy Vines, Annual Climbers, Climbing Roses, Ground Covers and Edible Fruits, the entries are packed with descriptive flowering and planting information as well as caveats and possible disease and insect problems. For less hardy vines there is advice for bringing them inside.

PLEASE, DECIDE FOR YOURSELF..........2007-08-04

I am an Early Childhood major teaching in a Head Start program. I have heard of these "more than" books from other teachers. One day I went to my local bookstore and browsed through several teacher resources. This book was so impressive I thought about paying bookstore prices! Next school year, I want to make available to my parents weekend activities in a bag(with a copy of the instructions) paper, crayons and a book that relates to the game or activity. With that said, I cannot tell you how delighted I am with this resource! The materials are not expensive - maybe ALREADY in your POSSESSION. I ordered a "used" copy OF THE BOOK to take back and forth with me to school. Later in the year I will order another "used" copy for home. Please, decide for yourself if this book would help you help your students make beginning math concepts as familiar as the name of the most popular toy available today.

Concrete and amazing.......2006-12-05

I was amazed when I read this book. Many people are afraid of math, and this book shows teachers (and/or parents)how to turn learning math into simple, repetitive teaching games for the children. You can use the same games for a variety of ages, and they are CHEAP to make (for low budget teachers). I got this book from the library, but now have to buy it. I couldn't believe how ingenious yet simple the games are. It also shows the teacher how to incorporate these games with other subjects or areas of the classroom with integrated curriculum activities for each game. A must-have for preschool or kindergarten children.

Yes! Progressive Education!.......2006-11-16

This book is exceptional in providing Math manipulative activities to the reader. You can use household items to make many of the activities. The lessons are hands-on NOT paper handouts that you see so often in public school. The children can experience these activities which is a far better way to learn than memorizing symbols on paper. Concrete experiences!!!!! Yes!!!!

Excellent book for dedicated teachers.......2005-08-17

It is unfortunate that just anyone can write a review regardless of how little they may know about the subject. I hope those reading reviews take them with a grain of salt. Keep in mind you do not know anything about the person writing the review. The person who wrote the negative review probably never read the book and clearly does not understand the meaning of whole math. Whole math involves direct teaching, but also helps children use mathematical concepts and relationships in the context of real life situations. The activities and experiences in this book are developmentally appropriate. Teachers provide children with meaningful math experiences rather than regurgitating answers onto ditto sheets. It is not a cookie cutter curriculum. It is for teachers interested in children understanding math rather than imitating teachers. There are volumes of research to support how well this works. Anyone with an early childhood education background would understand this. Also, hopefully any effective teacher uses a variety of teaching techniques and plans based on the interests and ability levels of children in the class. This is an excellent book to include when developing your math curriculum for preschool and kindergarten.

Whole language a failure - whole math is no better.......2003-01-24

The concept of whole language when implemented in California in the 80s was a total debacle and I see that there are still books out there promoting the "whole" concept, only this time it is in math. Use this book only in addition to tried and proven ways of teaching math.

Born in 1942, Paul Kos has been a highly influential artist in the Bay Area for well over three decades. In the late 60s and early 70s he was one of the major figures on the early conceptual art scene, notable especially for his early experimental video works and seemingly simple but technically innovative sculptural installations, which generally featured evocative audio or video components. He was one of the first to incorporate video into interactive installations. The artist's best-known work is arguably the sublime Chartres Bleu, a 1986 video installation that re-creates in full scale a stained-glass window from the Chartres cathedral in France. Each of the 27 vertically stacked video monitors duplicates an individual leaded glass panel. The brightness of the images stimulates the light changes in a normal day, accelerated to 12 minutes. Depending on the light, the narrative scenes are clearly readable or, when brightly illuminated, dissolved into abstractness. Everything Matters, published on the occasion of an exhibition of Kos's work at the Berkeley Art Museum, is the first major volume on his work.
