I've lived in New York City for ten years, and just when I thought I'd done/seen it all, along comes this great book! I just completed my first hike outlined in "Take a Hike: New York City" yesterday (in the Ramapo Mountains of New Jersey) and I'm hooked. I carried the guide with me and - being a novice hiker - found that all the detail was perfect and wise. And it's smartly written as well with a bit of humor! I might last another ten years in New York now that I've been introduced to another facet of the city I call home.

Enhanced Convertibles is actually written by the former editor of an advisory service rated by Hulbert in the top ten numerous times.
You would probably need to subscribe to Value Line for their current screens. Big money can be made with warrants on a common stock that is expected to increase over the next few years and you can also get a better return on some convertibles than the underlying common under certain conditions. The book has Lotus spreadsheets but these are unnecessary. Lyons is really just showing you why you should buy the Value Line Convertible service.

Obviously, as an investment banker at a top European Investment Bank, I read a great deal of finance books. I have to conclude that this is one of the worst. (1)The typeface is large, causing the book to expand to 200+ pages what can be summarised in 20 or less. (2) The author spends a great deal of time waxing lyrical about how great his Value Line model is, but provides no real details - to be honest I have never heard of value-line. (3) He gives examples in an ancient version of Lotus 123! The least he could do is give Excel equivalents. (4) One has real doubts about how sound his own basic financial theory really is.

I learnt next to nothing from this book. For his discussions about option pricing and warrants, a basic finance textbook would have told you more. I just feel lucky that a friend lent the book to me, I would never have bought it myself.

The nature of technical expertise has become increasingly important and problematic in the post-modern era, as structured hierarchies and production methods are revised. Financial services, one of our most important economic sectors, has also been confronting very high degrees of uncertainty that reflect great institutional and market changes. In this fluid and competitive environment technological change - in particular the widening scope of information technology (IT) - has become vitally important. This study is about the strategic uses of IT in retail financial services. It is based on the Scottish part of the industry, a highly cohesive sector in its own right, but one with universal linkages to UK and global finance. A set of seven case studies forms the empirical base, while the study also focuses on key strategic projects within these case companies. The purpose is to arrive at an understanding of how firms develop a strategic approach to IT. This hinges on the management of expertise - the ability to integrate detailed technological expertise with wider organizational and marketing goals. What Is It About?

This is Tariq's version of the Art of Mackin for Women. It promises to give women advice about men, dating, and relationships.

What Did I Get Out Of It?

I learned what king flex has to say about dating and seduction and got to hear what he advises women to do.

The Good News

The book is excellent and does deliver. It spells out the problems with men, the problems with women, what women really want, and why they think they want what they say they want. It also details the different type of males / females that exist in the dating world. The book is basically a hand book on dating and relationships and should be required reading for all women and most men.

The Bad News

There is relatively little bad news concerning this book. It is a bit short and I leisurely read it over the course of a weekend but, I consider that a good thing. Tariq is short and to the point and doesn't attempt to sugar coat things or pander to women with this book.

The Bottom Line

Any aspiring Mack man or women should have this book. It breaks down women and men and will help both parties do better with the opposite sex.

While I understand the basis to his philosophy, I feel that in repeating the stereotypes he perpetuates negativity sub-consciously. The laws of yesterday are not the same today. While he gives an overall view there is little uplifting and solution based strategy offered in this book. Does every group have it's faults? Yes, but if you have so much knowledge why not churn out something of higher value. Overall- smart brother, but I think he (and we) can do better.

Refreshing look at men and women.......2007-07-27

This book is a straight-forward and honest approach to man-woman relationships. The author writes in a friendly and frank manner. These words of wisdom are offered in a clear, thoughtful, and real form.

"The word game in strict terms simply means intelligence, hustle, and common sense. And having game means being knowledgable in every endeavor you choose to engage in." This book helps a female who makes bad choices in men, become a sophisticated, interesting, and confident woman who is comfortable with herself.

The reader is offered ten "Play or Be Played" tips, and also is given ten ways a woman can improve herself-in the form of game tips.

My favorite chapter dealt with the types of men:
-player
-professional
-pushover
-parolee
-the urban renaissance man
It was so interesting to find out about the different types of men, and to be made aware of their qualities.

The types of women are also displayed. Tips are also offered for a woman to improve her personality.

This book/guide applies to all aspects of life. It was entertaining and educational.

This book broke the laws of physics down. K-Flex begins by letting you know that anything y0u do in life will fail or succeed depending on your game. He is not telling us ladies to play on guys, but just letting us know how guys think and how to overide their plan to get in our panties.

K-Flex goes on to let the ladies know how to up your game so you can be that girl that every every guy wants.

On top of all that he asks that you be real with yourself and tell YOURSELF (not others) what your true agenda is with your relationship. Basically he's saying that if your a gold digger then admit it to yourself, if your a ho admit it to yourself... & so on.

Do not buy this book unless you want to be insulted. This book is based on the baseless opinions, ridiculous generalities and the WORST of gender stereotypes. He argues that "women are not born to be leaders" and "women are emotional thinkers." This book is inane, illogical and downright offensive to any women or girls who respect themselves. Quite frankly, I am angered that anyone even published this book.

I was searching for my copy of this book and it appears to have disappear! I used to just have a wonderful feeling just touching the book and have recommended it to a number of people who apreciate art and that of Miss Okeeffe, especially. I find such stories of how the author, Ms. Patten would encourage Miss O'Keeffe to assist her as she made them bread and the pleasure the artist got from doing that simple task. I also found it very interesting the method O'Keeffe developed for her daily walks --- carrying stones in her pockets that helped her know how far she had walked. And the precision with which she requested her simple clothing be laid out! I do think the book was one that show the love the author developed for Miss Okeeffe and that the author also saw how destructive some of the artists so called friends treated her in the last months of her life!

One of the few books that I found so far dealing with the exciting world of exporting products through distributors. Rather superficial in cultural content, overly detailed and unrealistically specific in calculating costs and margin-structures. Not really worth the rather high price.

Comprehensive Classic.......2006-01-28

A great book I have not seen remotely approached by other financial writers. The book discusses the business cycle with the attendant leading and lagging indicators of bonds, stocks, interest rates and commodities and where they are in the various stages of the business cycle. Very well presented and written. Other books in finance discuss detailed information but not a good overview or broad study of the subject. Mr. Pring does an excellent job in breadth and depth with his book. As you can see, I use the book for a reference to see which stage of the cycle our economy is approaching and consequently what to expect. This is a good read and a keeper.

To start with this book is 14 years old and is out dated. The author is more interested in general theory than in providing specific stock sectors to rotate into for each stage of the economic cycle.

Combines Intermarket Analysis with a business cycle framewrk.......2000-04-29

A classic. There is little like this book in public domain. Pring takes Intermarket analysis between stocks, bonds, commodities, and short term rates/Fed policy, and combines them into a business cycle model and framework. Outstanding piece of high level analytical work. Pring divides the business cycle into 6 stages, and describes how to identify the beginning and ending of the stages, and what to expect in between, but then he offers the jewel: what to expect from the tradeable financial markets during each phase of the cycle, and how to allocate to capitalize. In the hands of a serious investor, this is a roadmap that provides historical perspective and brings confidence in identifying sector trends earlier than you might with technical analysis by itself. E.g., it won't surprise you when the financial sector begins rallying when bonds bottom and turn up, and you can take positions earlier and with more confidence when you have historical business cycle perspective on your side. Best treatise on dynamic asset allocation I've seen. Makes the static allocation texts seem pointless and a way to "guarantee" investment mediocrity. A classic.

This monograph is based on qualitative and inductive research. All the cases treated in it are based on current events and try to find the common aspects and basic rules that govern the wrongdoing to the minority shareholders. In the four cases of US, French and Israeli companies, most of them in high tech, the minority shareholders lose almost all their investment. Those are not pervert cases but the norm in many companies, which is illustrated by qualitative cases, without being able of course to quantify them. Case studies are the preferred strategy when "how" and "why" questions are being posed. The purpose of this monograph is therefore to analyze why and how companies do not act ethically towards their minority shareholders, not how many, not which, not to what degree and not where.

A good tune-up.......2000-07-30

I have worked in the nonprofit field for over 20 years, most recently as a consultant, so I am always looking for good books to recommend to clients that need a broad range of advice. This book fits that bill, giving an overview of each of the areas that need to be examined in nonprofit operations. Some areas are given a rather broad brush-stroke, but the sections on fundraising and finance were quite thorough. This is not "the only book you will ever need," but it will give you good issues to consider and good standards for planning.

James Blackwood is one of those people who served as a role model by the way he treated others, conducted himself professionally, and pioneered an artform and ministry. Dr. Allen Dennis is to be commended for collecting this tribute. The thing that stood out for me was the character factor, i.e., that several contributors mentioned how Blackwood was a polished professional who took his work seriously, yet he was approachable and truly interested in other people.

Like several others said in their comments in the book, James Blackwood was one of my heroes when I was growing up. Professor Dennis edited this book in such a way that the comments pertaining to Blackwood relate to much more than just him. They demonstrate how others can leave a similar legacy in their own arenas. It's a matter of dedication and discipline. Repeatedly, Blackwood is described as a Christian gentleman and a genuine professional at his craft. I suggest the same could be said for Allen Dennis who left this work as part of his legacy.
