Customer Reviews:
Is it fun or profitable to sin?.......2004-07-16
This simple financial advice book focuses on 'sin stocks.' The writer in his portfolio states that this is a perfect world, the world of sin and corruption. Where has he been all his life? We read about such in the Bible. Is there such a thing as a 'perfect world' -- not that I am aware of the possibility.
This world has been at war since the beginning of recorded history and before. According to this web page, "these industries are nearly recession-proof." They will continue to experience 'significant capital appreciation' during good and bad markets. Why not invest in vice?
He touts these illustrious sin stocks as being in Gambling, Alcohol, Cigarettes, Aerospace & Defense, and Adult Entertainment (movies, live, massage parlors, and even porn on the computers). At a local computer lab, you can't sit down in peace to check email without porn popping up.
His version of defense is not creating weapons to invade, conquer, and destroy other nations. What about homeland defense from terrorists from the places living in the 'old ages'?
Alcohol is a thriving thing in this town and has a history of moonshiners and illegal consumption throughout the years. It is touted as a highly profitable business. It definitely is here, as all the men of Knoxville think they must drink as much as they can, to drown their sorrows. In an article written by a local journalist for the Summer '98 special, 'CELEBRATING KNOXVILLE & EAST TENNESSEE' entitled "Two Centuries of Growth," I learned some facts about my hometown which appalled me:
Not one permanent church here during the first quarter century;Knoxville's chief export was liquor: in the 1820s, the town had sixty distilleries; in 1906, there were 100 saloons downtown (imagine!)
It was criticized nationally as being the most sinful city in the South (after New Orleans). Saloons were banned in 1907 here, and the ban wasnot fully lifted until 1972 when the "city" reinstated liquor-by-the-drink.
Ahrens claims that our very first US President George Washington was a drinker (of malt!) -- I like malted milk, so I guess I am a drinker, oh my. Three years ago, I was invited to a gathering at a local pub and saw first hand how alcohol affects diverse groups and I was most uncomfortable in that smoky atmosphere. Needless to say, I was not invited back.
Lincoln is quoted as saying, "no vices have very few virtues." I'd suggest he read William Lee Miller's LINCOLN'S VIRTUES (An Ethical Biography). What we need more in this world are ethics.
Now, I understand why the Knoxville I grew up in during the '50s was the "glory days" of this town. Religion apparently didn't dominate society, but we had a background of morals which are not prevalent today.
With its lighthearted and simple approach to the vices he concentrates on for financial reasons, this is the ultimate defense in these 'trouble times' -- why not just get drunk, play the lottery (which is real big here at this time), look at naked women, smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette, and play war games.
Investing Should Be About Making Money.....................2004-04-02
.....and not about making a social or political statement - that's what investing in "vice" is all about. "Investing in Vice" is a straight forward read with many interesting facts that I am sure many investors are not aware of - but should be! At times, the book can sound simplistic, but then again - investing should be simple. It is no surprise to me that many of the so called "sin" stocks have - on average - outperformed the markets with significantly less volatility over the long term. Ahrens does a great job explaining everything you ever wanted to know about investing in Booze, Bets, Bombs and Butts.
Investing in "Sin" Stocks made easy.......2004-03-31
I will be the first to admit that I know very little about stocks in general. But after reading numerous articles about investing in so called "sin" stocks, I became very interested in learning more. Mr.Ahren's book is an easy read full of clear, insightful information. He not only explains why investing in these stocks makes so much sense, he lays out the facts to back up his statements in a way that is easy for even novices like me to understand. If you are interested at all in investing, especially in "sin stocks", this is a must read.
Lord Help Me.......2004-03-27
Investing in Vice is a very insightful with straight forward and well developed ideas on the virtues of investing in vice. A must read for all investors and a great portfolio diversification strategy. The author is a sage voice in a sector where the hype, glam, politics, and zeal often overshadow the reality that many of the companies are great performers and stocks.
Refreshingly straight forward investing talk!.......2004-03-20
I thought Ahrens book would be gimmicky, as it turns out, it was anything but gimmicky. Ahrens' take on the gaming, alcohol, tobacco and defense industries being an essential part of any investors portfolio is well thought out and credible. For those investors looking to recession proof their portfolio, Ahrens' book on vice investing is a great resource. I enjoyed the book in large part because it was an easy read, but very informative.

Book Description
Our closest living relatives, the chimpanzees, are familiar enough--bright and ornery and promiscuous. But they also kill and eat their kin, in this case the red colobus monkey, which may say something about primate--even hominid--evolution. This book, the first long-term field study of a predator-prey relationship involving two wild primates, documents a six-year investigation into how the risk of predation molds primate society. Taking us to Gombe National Park in Tanzania, a place made famous by Jane Goodall's studies, the book offers a close look at how predation by wild chimpanzees--observable in the park as nowhere else--has influenced the behavior, ecology, and demography of a population of red colobus monkeys.
As he explores the effects of chimpanzees' hunting, Craig Stanford also asks why these creatures prey on the red colobus. Because chimpanzees are often used as models of how early humans may have lived, Stanford's findings offer insight into the possible role of early hominids as predators, a little understood aspect of human evolution.
The first book-length study in a newly emerging genre of primate field study, Chimpanzee and Red Colobus expands our understanding of not just these two primate societies, but also the evolutionary ecology of predators and prey in general.

Exploring War in the Chimp World.......2005-04-27
I'm not a primatologist, thus this review is for people who may have a curiosity about chimp behavior as it may or may not relate to humans -- particularly the "warring behaviors" of chimps. The author packs a lot of research in this book -- statistical and anecdotal. Well written, highly readable. For those who like to see graphs and charts, there are also plenty of those. I bought this book as part of my research for teaching a war short stories college course. I was interested in learning about "violence" in animals and insects and comparing that violence with the human tendency to war. Well, I found plenty of relationships, and after a while, it became difficult to not see human behavior reflected in the fairly objective reports from the author/researcher. The information carnivorous habits (chimps hunt and eat colobus monkeys) is fascinating. As with Jane Goodall's research, the reader learns the individual characteristics and personalities of chimps in their peculiar society -- important, I think, as a way of viewing each animal as a societal force and to understanding the complex interrelationships, and their ties to power struggles. Most importantly, the book provides an insight into human behavior and how we negotiate and manipulate to achieve higher levels of power.

Description:
We are now entering a time of immense environmental upheaval where experts are increasingly required to provide conservation assessments. Quantitative assessment of trends in species' range and abundance is costly, requiring extensive field studies over a long period of time. For many species in dense habitats, it may be very difficult to establish reliable and sensitive survey and monitoring techniques, which are able to warn of potentially catastrophic population declines. Unfortunately many other species are only known through a few 'chance' sightings or a handful of museum specimens and therefore extinction may be even harder to ascertain. In 2000 Miss Waldron's Red Colobus, Piliocolobus badius waldronae, was reported as extinct, but since then (in 2001) a single specimen has been collected. Four probabilistic methods were used to infer extinction based on a record of sightings of the subspecies. Based on the date when the extinction statement of Miss Waldron's Red Colobus was made, all four methods returned probability values >0.05, suggesting that the subspecies is extant, but is extremely rare. If we cannot successfully monitor populations of critically endangered taxa, it becomes almost impossible to predict their extinction with any certainty and we can expect increasing numbers of false alarms in future years, which may undermine the potential for conservation action and, more worryingly, public support for conservation.
Book Description
Beginners love knitting scarves because they're easy; experienced knitters love them because the projects are fast.
Continuing Storey's popular die-cut Knit! series, Knit Scarves! features 16 unique scarf patterns that range from the toasty warm to the way cool to the tres chic. Candi Jensen--a craft and needlework designer with 25 years of experience--discusses everything from choosing the proper needles to avoiding such gaffs as mixing acrylic yarn with mohair yarn (acrylic needs a dryer to keep its shape, while mohair should never see the inside of a dryer).
The friendly, step-by-step instructions and color-coded charts make Knit Scarves! perfect for knitters of all skill levels.
Customer Reviews:
My First Knitting Book.......2007-08-24
This was my first knitting book purchase and I absolutely love it. Not only is the book a different and neat shape, but the patterns are easy to follow and there are some helpful tips and know-hows included. I like how the book isn't too big so I am able to carry it almost anywhere. I have already completed 3 scarves out of the book in a matter of 1 month! I recommend anyone to purchase this book.
I Can't Believe I'm Knitting These Patterns!.......2007-02-12
If you can knit, purl, increase and decrease but nothing more (like myself) please try this book. I can't believe I am knitting the fan pattern. I have played with the lace pattern and getting a little better at it with every try. This book is perfect for me. I can take basic knitting skills and turn them into something pretty. Any yarn can be substituted as I only use synthetics. Learn "Fair Isle" or patterned knitting too. I have found the instructions and pictures to be very clear and helpful.
I agree, this book is for the beginning or basic knitter (like myself) ready to branch out. I'm glad I purchased this book. It is helping me on the way to learn more knitting patterns and to become more confidant with my knitting.
scarf patterns.......2007-02-12
This is a useful book, with some unusual patterns ranging in difficulty from easy to complicated.
worthwhile.......2006-10-25
I have a pretty large collection of knitting books and knit almost every day. By now, I've found that no single book provides 100% of what I look for, but most contain some new ideas and some interesting patters. A scarf is a very basic garment, just a long strip of cloth, really, but there are endless variations. Knit Scarves contains some lovely patterns, as well as clear instructions and diagrams covering how to accomplish the various techniques and stitches. Each pattern has a little supplement attached suggesting yarns to try in addition to the one shown. A good stimulus for creativity. This one has found a place in my permenant library.
Knit Scarves.......2005-10-22
Excellent diagrams, easy to follow directions. Author showed the same pattern knit with a variety of different yarns. Great choice!

A breakup, divorce, or loss of a loved one isn't just the end of your relationship with that person. It's a continuation of every feeling of abandonment you've ever suffered. It's the loss of a system of approval you'd come to depend on. The struggle, as Gray points out in Starting Over, isn't just to find a new partner, but to get over those feelings of abandonment or loss or anger or whatever else gets dredged up by the end of a relationship.
Perhaps the book's most crucial chapter posits that the best way to get over the loss of love is to focus on the "love" more than the "loss." That may seem impossible, especially if the bum took off with your best friend, your life savings, and your Lyle Lovett CDs, but Gray didn't get to be a household name because the advice in his Venus and Mars books doesn't work. Remembering only the bad parts, Gray says, leaves you with an important part of your emotional being closed to new business.
As for the Venus and Mars stuff, that comes in the second half of the book, when Gray looks at how men and women start new relationships from different points of view, with different priorities (a man might want to have fun with no strings attached; a woman might carry with her a lengthy list of requirements for her next partner, a list that excludes virtually all available men).
If you've never read Gray's work before, you have to be prepared to check your cynicism at the door. This is earnest stuff, but it's also based on decades of experience counseling clients. He's not one of those photogenic, nine-times-divorced shrinklets who's telling you how to conduct your relationships without any real clue of what makes love last. This is the real package: nothing glib, nothing quick and easy, nothing you could've figured out from a "Love Is..." cartoon.
Book Description
Is it possible to find love again after a breakup, death, or divorce?
At the end of a relationship, it can sometimes feel like the end of the world. Devastation, loneliness, and bitterness are some emotions that exist due to a breakup, divorce, or the loss of a loved one. But with the help of this compassionate guide, Dr. John Gray expresses that you will survive and tells you how to find love again.
While the process of healing is similar with both sexes, there are distinct differences between the ways men and women heal their bruised hearts. In Mars and Venus Starting Over, Dr. Gray offers gender-specific advice on how to:
- Deal with pain
- Find forgiveness
- Discover the strength to let go
- Rebuild confidence
- Rise to the challenge of finding fulfillment again
Filled with gentle guidance, healing practices, and compassionate wisdom, Mars and Venus Starting Over will help men and women explore the meaning of loss, find their way through the healing process, and discover the secret to moving on.

Much needed insight.......2007-05-16
This book is insightfully written and is valuable in making relationships (of all kinds, not just romantic ones)work when dealing with someone who has experience the trauma of relationship loss. John Gray's entire series help take the sting out of interpersonal relationships by shining light on reactions that are not actually personal in intent but common across most people. This makes it easier to get along with other people and to avoid some basic male-female relating mistakes.
Dr. Gray in another of his Mars Venus books.......2007-01-20
These books are getting old. Same story as the last... same story as the next. Easiest way to get over someone is to get under someone ELSE!
A new start is always good.......2006-11-16
You don't have to divorce or die to start over. This is a good book to read for people who just need see their relationship from a different perspective or view. Relationships don't have to end to "start over". This is a book that can help you reevaluate your life and your relationships. The loss of a "loved one" does not always have to be permanent.
excellent guidance for moving on/& letting go of pain/hurt.......2006-09-29
typical John Gray take on male/female differences in dealing with loss, break-ups, or divorce, I found myself learning more & realizing what we tend to do without awareness when we have had our hearts broken & life altered, especially after any long-term marriage/relationship of 20+ years, it is not only a loss/death of a marriage, it is a total change of life-style, mind-set,& new set of rules, but what John Gray helped me to see is without healing properly from this event or any major loss, that if we don't grieve, & feel all the emotions from sadness, sorrow, fear, to anger we can't release the unhealthy part of that relationship & move forward to love & be more balanced in a new relationship, I think it will help me & others who have a desire to grow & be more balanced, without as John says by (giving too much or avoiding intimacy) I would advise this to anyone ready to move forward in their life with a open heart towards others.
THE GOSPEL TRUTH AND "FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED".......2005-09-24
This is the first book that clarified for me what men are doing when they use women the way they do after they get divorced. I'm a coach who works with midlife daters, and I see it all the time. I hoped it was just a few bad apples. Evidentally not. According to Gray, it's more the norm. That's like finding out there isn't a Santa Claus ... an illusion destroyed, but good to know, because a man "in transition" is simply not available emotionally, yet can be the most romantic and ardent seducer the woman has ever had, so she never sees it coming. He gets his ego back together and drops her like a hot potato.
The term "on the rebound" has been with us for decades. Believe it.
This book explains what we see -- men getting attached to the first woman who shows up at their wife's funeral "with a casserole and cleavage", so good women, women who think that's rude don't have a chance...but Gray clarifies what they're missing isn't much. (You tell me some go ahead and marry? Yes, and this might explain the 70% second-marriage divorce rate.)
Women tell me how frustrating the timing is because men grab a woman so fast, or more specifically, "the love of a woman," as Gray calls it, his need being what's important, not what woman it may be.
So what do we have here? Women, who tend, as Gray says, to wait too long coming upon men who are moving too fast ... there's an element of desperation there, and ... IT CERTAINLY EXPLAINS A LOT.
This is not a pretty picture, as other reviewers have mentioned.
Do women do this? Yes, but it isn't damaging because men are the recipients, and men typically can get sexually involved without getting emotionally involved. And ... women are more willing not to "use" men during this period, realizing they have nothing to offer (until healed). (As we learn in EQ research, women test higher in "social responsibility.") As Gray points out. What women and men both need to do is to pray for good timing (j.k., but hey, it IS IS "mars and venus" remember?)
Is this book helpful? Definitely. And about like a spoonful of medicine. It is excellent, truly excellent about explaining the dynamics and you may not like it, but you may be very, very glad you read it. Knowledge is power.
Is the book helpful for changing what may be inevitable? Only with awareness. What we can learn from this book is what might work better: (1) women who don't wait "too long" spending their time taking care of people, so when they do meet someone viable, they're on the desperate-edge; (2) men who can control their desperate loneliness after their woman leaves them (too bad they don't appreciate it until it's gone) and, as gentlemen, 'use' only women during this period who agree to it (every pot has a lid); (3) ergo, as much honesty on the part of both parties as is possible ... but the thing is, desperate people prevaricate; (4) women realizing there are few women who can engage in recreational sex and not get emotionally involved; (5) learning the signs of a man or woman who is not available (read the book); (5) knowing what you want and what it looks like (read the book, get coaching). (And it's great on how to heal and move on.)
So many great men and great women meet one another at the wrong time ... when the other one is just "starting over." (Hey, let 'em cut their teeth on someone else. If you think you're "different," read the book.)

Wonderfully told story.......1998-01-14
This is a wonderfully told poignant story about a man who in spite of a tragic and unfortunate childhood, has left his indelible mark in the world with his talent and imagination.
The author has been able to transport you into his mind, live with his thoughts and describe in vivid terms the landscapes and people that surrounded him as if you are there.
One can sense the beauty of nature, the pathos, the disappointments and applaud the courage of this man to overcome his humble and disadvantaged beginnings.
It is told in a style that is fresh, that transcends continents and makes you want to know and see more of this Italian artist whose work has never been shown in this country
