Develop a Winning Investment Strategy -- with Expert Advice from "The Nation's #1 Money Manager"
Peter Lynch's "invest in what you know" strategy has made him a household name with investors both big and small.
An important key to investing, Lynch says, is to remember that stocks are not lottery tickets. There's a company behind every stock and a reason companies -- and their stocks -- perform the way they do. In this book, newly revised and updated for the paperback edition, Peter Lynch shows you how you can become an expert in a company and how you can build a profitable investment portfolio, based on your own experience and insights and on straightforward do-it-yourself research. There's no reason the individual investor can't match wits with the experts, and this book will show you how.
In Beating the Street, Lynch for the first time:
* Explains how to devise a mutual fund strategy
* Shows how he goes about picking stocks, step-by-step
* Describes how the individual investor can improve his or her investment performance to rival that of the experts of the investment clubs.
Customer Reviews:
A study in excellence.......2007-02-15
What a great book of explanation. He gives many of his normal habits to us that are away from all the other advise of investors and financial advisors. His whys may sound old fashioned but look at his record and you will be old fashioned also if you could obtain what he did. I will read any and all of his other books now. I only see one listed at this point but will hope to find him writing more. I have been in the Magellian fund since 1986 and his success has proven itself to me personally.
Entertaining and useful.......2007-02-10
This book is a must-read for anyone interested investing. Peter Lynch ran one of the most successful mutual funds in history, the Fidelity Megellan Fund, which averaged an annual return of 29% during his 13 year tenure. He is also ranked by Wall Street as one of the most successful stock pickers on the planet. In Beating the Streets, Lynch outlines his common-sense approach to stock picking. The approach, labeled as "buy what you know" by Lynch, or investing in your "circle of competence" as referred to by Warren Buffet, is a simple strategy the yields results proven by many successful investors. In his book, Lynch goes through his entire process of stock picking from how he discovers a lead through what numbers he looks at to how he investigates the company behind the stock. I found the book to be an extremely accessible, comprehensive, and practical guide that is written in an entertaining and light-hearted manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wasn't born with a fortune in their bank account.
The Lynch Classic--Unbeatable, except perhaps Warren Buffett's Annual Reports.......2007-02-04
Lynch makes lots of good points. One of them is as a small investor you can buy into thinly traded stocks on the way up, such as APCC in the early days.
Big funds simply can't get enough stock to make it "worthwhile," an interesting point, usually overlooked by the pros in their writing.
if you want to know how to invest you don't need this book!.......2007-01-29
if you want to know how to invest you don't need this book!
90% of this book is Peter Lynch story
not as good as I expected.......2007-01-22
A lot of repeating in this book. Lack of good ideas.

Book Description
The capital markets can be defined as any organized market - or indeed private exchanges - where capital funds (debt and equity/shares) are traded in order to raise capital - cash - for the issuer or holder of the shares or debt. This also includes the multi trillion dollar commodity business and bond and stock trading. Essentially, any market where various counterparties are brought together to conduct business.
Customer Reviews:
You say you want a revolution? Well..........2005-01-08
This high-pitched book takes on the task of describing the recent innovations in capital markets and of prophesizing where these innovations will lead. The premise is not overly complex. Internet has opened opportunities for new electronic trading systems, which are changing the way capital markets work. These systems will end securities exchange as we know it, since they will be better at matching orders. Brokers, it is argued, will lose a lot of their utility since the masses would have direct access to the trading process. Clearing business, in its capacity to insure that your trade settles even if your counterparty defaults, will blossom. New, nimble, electronic-only services will win the day.
In spite of the book's high aspirations, it fails to excite.
It lacks general appeal. The book allots vast majority of its page space to the argument that new electronic trading systems may force many pit traders to look for new jobs. This in itself would be important news for pit traders, but would hardly appear revolutionary to the general public.
The book decidedly lacks analysis. Will fully automated trading alone offer better access to capital for issuers? Will it enable a substantially different service for individual traders than Ameritrade, beyond just lowering transaction costs? Why are technological advances so different in different parts of financial markets (NYSE, for example, has had the Automated Bond System that started automatically matching orders since mid 70's)? Besides, innovation in financial markets is not new. Is introduction of ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) indeed revolutionary compared to, say, index funds? How exactly are single-stock futures groundbreaking compared to other financial instruments? The book chooses not to reveal the arguments in support of its statements.
The book is rather poorly written. Many passages employ widely digressive language and never arrive to making a point. In addition, the frequent use of loud labels such as "Luddites" or "post-feudal marketplace" makes it especially apparent that the book relies more on the strength of words than on the strength of argument.
The parallels with French Revolution are ill advised. The cover displays guillotine, most famous as the weapon of mass executions during the Reign of Terror. One hopes that by extolling the virtues of revolution, the author is not suggesting Robespierre as his role model. Coupled with it, the red-and-black jacket most immediately evokes fascist symbolism. A regrettable oversight.
Finally, with its long-winded passages restating the same message and its propensity for strong statements not supported by much analysis, the book is quite tedious, especially for a book about a "revolution".
Book Description
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of getting a dog or nervous about caring for the one you’ve already brought home, now you can relax. Understanding Your Dog for Dummies helps you recognize not only why your dog behaves the way she does, but in a way that enables you to parlay that into a well-behaved companion who listens (and sits, and speaks, and comes, etc.).
Whether your pooch is a mixed breed or purebred, she has a distinct identity that makes her unique. The first step in understanding your dog is to respect the honorable task she was originally bred for and to identify how these inbred impulses influence her personality and behavior. In essence, you need to speak her language if you expect her to learn to understand yours.
Understanding Your Dog for Dummies gives you everything you need to learn to understand your pooch’s unique dialect of “Doglish”—and shows you how to take on the role as pack leader to give your dog the cues, guidance, and consistency she needs to shape and develop good behaviors. Inside you’ll discover how to:
- Read your dog’s body language
- Communicate with your dog
- Interpret your dog’s breed-specific traits
- Correct dog-behavior-gone-bad
- Counter anxiety-based behavior
- Understand and resolve aggressive behavior
- And so much more!
Think of this book as Doglish 101—a prerequisite for every human member of your dog’s family. Now, let the training begin!

Each project includes color graphs and diagrams, and there's plenty of information on stringing techniques, selecting the best fibers, combining different sizes and types of beads, and troubleshooting. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.
Customer Reviews:
Kinda Creepy.......2007-07-21
This book has an adequate technical description of the techniques and is helped if you also get the DVD book(?), Create with the Designers Beaded Crochet, of hers that contains some of the projects from this book where Ann Benson gives a good demo of the basics.
I guess some consider the projects tasteful but I think the majority of them are very old fashioned and I am a 66 year old grandmother! My main objection to this book are the photos of young girls dressed up with lots of makeup wearing these 'jewels'. This is where my review title comes in. These pictures are far too reminiscent of that poor child, JonBinet Ramsey, and therefore Kinda Creepy!
pretty pictures but not alot of "guts"........2007-04-10
This book had lovely pictures of young girls wearing jewels but in my mind lacked the instruction/s I was looking for. When ordering a book to increase my bead crochet abilities that is exactly what I want - a how to book. This book did not fill that desire. This is not a book that I would necessarily keep in my library.
a different perspective.......2007-03-04
When I bought this book I thought I would be able to learn bead crochet from it without much difficulty. HA! The author uses bead slip-stitch and even though I had many years of crocheting experience........I just couldn't 'get-it'. Bead single crochet beginning with larger beads and thicker thread was a better technique for learning (for me anyway). Now that I learned (from another source)......I love this book and have used for several projects. It is a beautiful book, full of inspiration and I find it quite contemporary compared to vintage beaded ropes.
Bead Crochet Jewelry: Tools, Tips, and 15 Beautiful Projects.......2007-02-14
I love this book.
I've been teaching bead rope crochet for 3 years. This the best resource book I've seen. It has both simple and complex ideas but also some very advanced techniques that I've not seen elsewhere and believe me I have just about everything.
old fashioned.......2006-07-09
This is so old fashioned! it looks like the jewles of a grandma, that the grandaughter will love to play with, but, well, nothing I really want to make.
maybe the instructions are good, that is why i am giving it 3 stars and not one. but the thing on the cover - this is what inside. do not expect anything modern. this is only my opinion.

Diagnostic tests in the childbearing years.......2006-03-16
This book was great it detailed every possible diagnostic test. I wouldn't reccomend this to a lay person due to the medical language, not to mention sometimes ignorance is bliss.
It could be overwelming reading some of the info. But if you were in or had any medical backround this is an excellent resource.
book order.......2005-10-11
book arrived in great condition. book was as promised and service was prompt. very satisfied customer.
Hands down the best overview of test for the childbearing year.......2005-09-14
Anne Frye has once again earned the number one spot for authors of midwifery-related professional texts. In my opinion this book is one of the most important titles for caregivers of women in the childbearing year. Frey weaves together her incredible depth of wisdom with the latest science. She gives the art of midwifery a breath of fresh air by including the most common issues, their tests and treatments, and the most atypical, unusual issues and the various ways of approaching diagnosis and care. This book is extremely valuable for caregivers of the holistic approach but should be a required read for med students who are going to work with women and pregnancy. They would gather the sense of awe so beautifully injected to the text.
Despite what some may have heard about its size, this is one of the only books that I carry to all my prenatals. The format is easy to find your way through and nearly every subject is presented in clear non-threatening language. Not only is this book an informative "must have" for birth professionals but also it is a fascinating read. There are so many issues covered for anything and everything that a mother and newborn might be tested for or diagnosed with. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
An inspirational celebration of art and artist, this is a collection of beloved images by Matisse coupled with his reflections on art, aesthetics, life and society.
Customer Reviews:
Very brief.......2004-07-08
This book offers a brief view of Matisse's varied ouvre: paintings, drawings, and cutouts, covering several decades of his lifeer. Each two-page spread shows a new piece, well printed, together with at least one quote from the artist's writings or interviews.
"Brief" is the key word, though. There are only a few dozen of his works here. The quotations are nearly all one-sentence sound bites, cut loose from the context that gave them their original meanings. What's even more confusing is that, although the pictures are in time order, the quotations are not. In fact, very few quotations have anything to do with the pictures they accompany, except in the compiler's mind.
Anyone unfamiliar with Matisse will find this a brief, digestible introduction. The afficionado will be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Gold Drivel.......2005-03-19
This "book" earns one star merely because it presents data about gold valuation. I see litttle value in the material presented. First, the material presented is plastic bound, a format usually reserved for notes in a college course. Second, the material is amassed with typos and grammatical errors to such a degree that it detracts from the material and limits the credibility of the author. Spell check does work on most computers. The charts and graphs are grainy and difficult to comprehend, there is no scale of reference, and has no references to corroborate. They merely agree with the text, the text says the line should point up in the corresponding graph and it does. Scattered throughout the text are quotes without sources are even relevance to the surrounding data. The organization of the material leaves something to be desired as well. Most importantly, investing should be an emotionless activity in order to make the most rational decisions with one's money. The author immediately begins the text with excitement and fear: the gold super cycle is at hand, the dollar is in a state of devaluation, and the government is going to take your money if you don't move it off shore. Granted, I agree with the author on the economic complexities of commodities and their current and future rise, but we are not quite in Germany of the 1940's. The data found in this book can be discovered in many other places, presented in far more compelling ways, and for a much cheaper price. Check out, "The Coming Collapse of the Dollar and How to Profit from it," or look at the free information on Zeal Intelligence webpages. There is commentary from 2000, weekly postings, completely (as far as I have read) void of errors, and fantastic graphs and analysis. Do not waste your money.

Disappointing.......1999-12-31
Quite disappointing. Narrow in scope, and does not deal with many of the more important issues of the information age.
Good content; currently being updated. Great ideas........1999-09-20
This textbook and reference work has great ideas and materials on the most relevant issues in dealing with these complex topics. Since this material becomes (partially) dated quickly, one might wish to wait for the new edition.
Nevertheless, it makes a valuable contribution by covering extensively many of the major issues in this growing and rapidly changing field.

Operators of small business have always been attracted to the Internet's seemingly bottomless supply of ready customers, but their hopes can quickly be dashed by the competitive realities of business on the Web. Poor Richard's Internet Marketing and Promotions aims to take the entrepreneur by the hand and show him or her how to draw attention to an Internet resource without spending a lot of money.
What the authors present is a sort of guerrilla model for online business in which you use your apparent weaknesses to your advantage. You might, for example, exploit your woefully low traffic level by delivering an extraordinary level of attention to the customers you do have. The idea is that good news spreads, and the publishers of Web resources should provide lots of good things for their visitors to pass along. You can also go outside your customer base to attract visitors without buying banner ads--you can join a professional association or a Web ring, for example.
In addition to their particular brand of marketing advice, authors Peter Kent (who also wrote the excellent Poor Richard's Web Site) and Tara Calishain do a fine job of explaining more pedestrian technical subjects, such as how to prepare your pages for listing on search engines. --David Wall
Topics covered: Audience identification, basic page design and coding, registering with search engines, creating newsletters and other mailing lists, joining affiliate programs, filing press releases, and tracking reactions.
Book Description
Here is commonsense advice on how to market and promote on the Internet. This book contains methods for getting the word out in cyberspace using electronic press releases, discussion groups, electronic newsletters, product giveaways, opt-in E-mail, and more. It explains sales techniques such as the puppy-dog close, 100 percent guarantees, and selling benefits rather than products. Unlike other books on this topic, this is a down-to-earth explanation of how to market on the Internet from an author with extensive Internet marketing experience.
Customer Reviews:
Even an Mouse Can Now Master Internet Promotion.......2004-05-18
A few weeks ago, I ordered a book from Poor Richard's Web site. I was familiar with Peter Kent's email marketing newsletter. I had perused his website extensively. I was aware that he was one hell of an internet marketer, but I was not fully prepared for the extent of his marketing know- how until I read "Poor Richard's Internet Marketing and Promotions".
The second book in the widely praised "Poor Richard's" series that began with "Poor Richard's Web Site" published by Top Floor Publishing. Kent has earned rave reviews from Amazon.com to Fortune.com to USA Today to Windows magazine for his outstanding knowledge of internet marketing and design.
This book is invaluable to any and every internet marketer. It covers everything from using low-cost press releases to reach hundreds of journalists to giving away products at other peoples' Web sites to preparing your Web site for successful search-engine registration to using associate programs to multiply your sales presence on the Internet to using awards to bring people to your site to buying advertising without breaking the bank to using newsletters your own and other people's to promote your website.
Every page in this book is a goldmine, with internet links and fantastic advice on how to not waste your valuable time online, earn a decent income with online sales tools, and how to do it all on a budget!
To top it off, some of the advice is also available for off- line use as well as he uses simple and effective marketing promotion techniques.
This book is my new personal internet marketing bible, and I'd strongly suggest you make it yours as well!
A decent book on marketing and promotion........2001-06-18
I found this book to be best for covering the basics of marketing and promotion on the internet. However, as is the problem with many internet books, the links and e-mail addresses offered in the book are out of date and don't work. Despite this problem, the book is very helpful and full of good information.
Erroneous and Misleading Information.......2001-06-03
We had high aspirations and scrupulously read this book looking for guidance, all to no avail. This book contains incorrect and misleading information. We tried the various links for additional data many of which were no longer on the web. Others that we contacted via e-mail the response was not what was designated in the book. Peter and Tara provide their e-mail addresses, but they neither respond nor answer questions. The only conclusion that one can draw is that they crank out the books just to sell them and make a quick dollar. They don't really intend to be there for the consumer. This book was a total waste of money. The only thing that it is good for is the garbage or fireplace.

GREAT AUTOBIOGRAPHY.......2002-09-07
ONE OF THE FEW BOOKS WHERE THE READER MERGES INTO THE AUTHOR.
An important and much appreciated contribution.......2001-02-17
In 1939 Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin signed a non-aggression pact and secretly agreed to divide Poland. This was the event that enabled Germany to invade Poland without fear of Soviet interference. Fifteen days after the German invasion, the Red Army attacked Poland from the east. This historical event is the background to the true story related in From Nazi Inferno To Soviet Hell. Here revealed is an aspect of the World War II Jewish experience that is a formerly obscure feature of the corruption, uncertainty, and constant danger of life under the Stalin regime. It is also an enduring testimonial to the human spirit, ingenuity, and will to survive. From Nazi Inferno To Soviet Hell is an important and much appreciated contribution to the 20th history archives of the Jewish experience, the Nazi holocaust, and Soviet oppression.
